The events that led up to the July 13 apparition centers on Lucia. After hearing the priest telling her mother that she may be seeing the devil, Lucia began to experience anxiety and discouragement. This was something like a "dark night of the soul" where she did not want to go back to the apparition site again. Despite her status as a seer and chosen soul, she experienced her faith life in the same way we do, and had to struggle to find God and to even pray and offer daily sacrifices. During the apparition, the children were given the three-part secret of Fatima, including the vision of hell. After they saw the horrible consequences of sin, they came to understand their mission better. Our Lady revealed the devotion to her Immaculate Heart and why Our Lord wanted this to avoid the great sufferings that were in store for the world if it did not change. We know our Lady has called us to pray and sacrifice. But did you know that a specific call to prayer was made in 1979? It is not well known, but Mary Our Mother appeared to Sr. Lucia in that year, and called for prayer and sacrifice, especially for priests. Let’s heed our Mother’s request, as now more than ever it seems like evil is rampant in our world and Church. Born in Newark, NJ, on June 16, 1944. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, attended the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, NJ, was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in 1970; and named Prelate of Honor by Pope John Paul II in 1986.
In July of 1999, Bishop DiMarzio was appointed as the Sixth Bishop of Camden, New Jersey, and served there until October 2003, when he was installed as the Seventh Bishop of Brooklyn at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica. Bishop DiMarzio has spent his ministry of over 40 years in the areas of immigration assistance and refugee resettlement services.
Reverend Luke grew up in small town Indiana. Raised nominally Catholic, he experienced a profound conversion while at a rock concert during his freshman year at Ball State U. He transferred to Franciscan University of Steubenville.
Upon graduating from Franciscan University in 1996, he joined the Community of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. The friars live a radical life concentrated on prayer, fraternity, hands on work with the poor and the new evangelization. Fr. Luke was ordained to the priesthood in 2003. He served as vocation director, postulant director, and presently, director of priestly studies. Fr. Luke gives retreats and leads pilgrimages.
Fr. Matt attended Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, CT, as a belated vocation. He was ordained in the Marian Year on Jan. 11, 1988 and served as chaplain of the Catholic University in the Diocese of Ponce, Puerto Rico.He was been serving in the Diocese of Bridgeport since 1991. In 2005, Fr. Matt earned his Licentiate Degree (S.T.L.) in the Theology of Mary at the International Marian Research Institute located at the University of Dayton, a branch of the Pontifical Marianum University in Rome, Italy. Currently, Fr. Matt is the chaplain of St. Camillus Nursing Home in Stamford, CT. He has been regular columnist of Soul Magazine for over ten years and is the author of two books.

The third week of Advent focuses on JOY and that is why the candle we light is pink, the liturgical color for joy. It is also called the “Shepherd’s Candle” because of the joy of the shepherds in the field who were told by the angel, “Behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord” (Lk 2:11).
St. Luke refers to Jesus as Savior, Messiah, Lord. This savior was born for ALL the people – Jew and Gentile alike. Rather than a political figure who would deliver just the Israelites from an oppressive government system, this Messiah would rescue all of humanity from sin and the condition of alienation from God. After finding the baby lying in the manger, just as the angel had said, the shepherds went away glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen (cf Lk 2:20).
St. Francisco Marto, after having experienced the light of God at Fatima, could not explain in human terms what is God. He could only rejoice in the fire of His love that he felt inside. What is God for us? Are we looking for a Messiah who can only deliver us from an earthly suffering? How we limit God – making finite what is infinite. The great saints who lived through some of the worse of situations kept their focus on the infinite glory of God and experienced great joy. He can do ALL things and nothing is impossible for Him.
What gives you joy? When you light the pink candle of Advent, ask the Messiah, the Savior, the Lord to give you that joy which cannot be put into words.
Second week of Advent: FAITH in the Journey to Bethlehem

How fitting that we celebrate the great feast of the Immaculate Conception during the Advent season. Mary conceived without sin was the start of our salvation and the fulfillment of the promise of a Messiah. It was the prophet Micah who foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. The second candle we light this Sunday is called the “Bethlehem Candle”; it represents FAITH, recalling the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem.
Let us make the journey with them during this Advent season. As we do, we can go forward with the certainty that God has a plan for us, a destination where we will encounter Him. Like Mary and Joseph, we may not know the challenges and disappointments we will face along the way. But, our Faith tells us to trust that God has everything in His most capable hands.
The journey to Bethlehem is one we must undertake if we are to live and grow in FAITH. The darkest path there will lead us to a great Light.

Advent begins a season of prayer, penance and sacrifice in anticipation of the coming of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Advent wreath is the sign of our faith in this truth. The four candles that are lit over the four weeks of Advent each represent 1,000 years, which together add up to the 4,000 years that humanity awaited it's salvation, from the time of Adam and Eve to the birth of Jesus.
Christmas is celebrated during the darkest time of the year, so the contrast of the Light of Christ is even more brilliant on the earth. As we light a new candle each week, we dispel the darkness, making way for His coming into the world. Our prayers and sacrifices throughout the Advent season help shine His light where there is none.

The question came up: How do I continue to trust in God when everything around me is falling apart?

Official Statement from the World Apostolate of Fatima - Our Lady's Blue Army - A call to keep our swords in hand
I want to speak with you about the troubling happenings in the Church which have dominated the news these past few weeks.
Certainly it is sad when anyone acts contrary to the laws of God, and it is even more troubling when those that we look up to and trust fail to live up to their responsibilities. The very foundation of our Faith is shaken.
Certainly those who are guilty of crimes and those who helped facilitate these actions must be punished, but we must be careful not to support actions that will do serious long term damage to the Church of Christ. Her enemies are many and are ready to attack as a wild beast attacks a wounded animal.
Thou art Peter the rock and upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. The optimal word here is prevail.
Throughout history the Church has suffered persecution and difficulty. It is no different now. Whether these attacks are from the outside or from within they are non-the-less attacks against the Body of Christ.
There are many good priests and bishops, truly the majority, who labor faithfully in the vineyard of the Lord. They work daily for the salvation of souls. We must support them and the Church.
At Fatima Our Lady warned of the many difficulties that would envelope the world if her requests were not headed. The Church is not immune from these difficulties.
Instead of the Church transforming culture as is its mission, in many quarters the culture is transforming the Church.
The Cure of Ars once said the there is no such thing as a bad priest just those who have not been prayed for enough. Our job as members of this apostolate is to pray for the sanctification of our clergy so that they can effectively transform the world.
He also said:
“If a priest is determined not to lose his soul, as soon as any disorder arises in the parish he must trample under foot all human considerations as well as the fear of the contempt and hatred of his people. He must not allow anything to bar his way in the discharge of duty, even where he is certain of being murdered on coming down from the pulpit. A pastor who wants to do his duty must keep his sword in hand at all times.'”
We too as laity must keep our sword in hand at all times. Our sword is the rosary, the weapon as St. Padre Pio called it.
101 years after the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima the many things that she predicted have come to pass. Unfaithfulness in all walks of life has become the norm. One half of all marriages end in divorce, even Catholic marriages. Many religious vocations are abandoned. The problems which we are witnessing in the Church reflect the problems of a society that has turned from God and decided to set its own course. We as the Church of Christ must make an even stronger effort to be faithful to Him.
We are calling for a new initiative of prayer for priests. Let’s help them be soldiers in this war. It is indeed a war, and the consequence of losing this conflict is eternal loss of God.
The Fatima message is one of prayer, penance and sacrifice. Let us make a new effort to bring holiness back in to the world. The Triumph of the Immaculate Heart, promised by the Queen of Heaven will come when we have merited it by our faithfulness.

A Prayer for Priests
O Almighty Eternal God, look upon the face of Thy Son, and for the love of Him who is the eternal High Priest, have pity on Thy priests. Remember, O most compassionate God, that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their vocation, which is in them by the imposition of the bishop’s hands. Keep them close to Thee, lest the enemy prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation.
O Jesus, I pray Thee for Thy faithful and fervent priests; for Thy unfaithful and tepid priests; for Thy priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for Thy tempted priests; for Thy lonely priests; for Thy dying priests; for the souls of Thy priests in purgatory. But above all I commend to Thee the priests dearest to me; the priest who baptized me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted, and who gave me Thy Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me, or helped and encouraged me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way, particularly N. The question came up: Why pray to Mary?
Does not praying to Mary go against the first of the Ten Commandments: “I am the Lord your God, you shall have no strange gods before me?” By this commandment, doesn’t God forbid placing a creature in between Himself and the person who prays? So why go to Mary?
Underneath the question, there is a presupposition: one has presupposed that Mary is an obstacle in between us and God; both, in going to God and in God coming to the person who prays.
Now, having such a quick ear, you can notice that common sense is the best approach for answering this question.
First, Mary cannot be an obstacle for God coming to the person who prays, since He already came to each of us by being born “ex Maria virgine,” that is, outof the Virgin Mary. When the innkeeper at Bethlehem refused Mary, he also refused the Messiah, Jesus Christ. God is the one who placed Mary in between us and Himself. Dare we refuse?
Second, Mary cannot be an obstacle for the person who prays toward God because Mary is not the object of the act of faith. It’s something like how people use eye glasses for corrected vision. One does not look at the glasses. Rather, one always looks through the glasses for the purpose of seeing the object beyond more sharply. It is the same with praying to Mary, or more precisely, throughMary. When we pray through Mary, and that is the same thing as praying with her, we are able to see the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit more clearly. Mary is not an obstacle. Mary is an amplifier. Mary amplifies our prayers to God, and through her, God amplifies His love to us. After all, she did say, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” Finally, Pope Saint John Paul the Second encourages us to “enter into the school of Mary,” where she presents to us the sacred countenance of Jesus Christ, who is the object of our acts of faith, our hope, and our charity.
May Our Lady of Fatima protect you and may her mantle cover you and your family.

The World Apostolate of Fatima, USA is partnering with The Holy League on the54-day Novena for Our Nation and the nationwide Rosary Coast to Coast, Oct. 7, adding a sacrificial element as was emphasized at Fatima.
Sister Lucia said that the most essential part of the Fatima message is the sanctification of your daily duty according to your state of life. In other words, to offer up all of your sufferings, trials and tribulations that God permits in your life every day as reparation for the salvation of souls and in supplication for the conversion of sinners. This was the first request Our Lady posed to the three Fatima children on May 13, 1917.

Father Joshua Caswell is an associate pastor at St. John Cantius Parish in Chicago, IL.
He, along with his brother, were the last priests ordained by Francis Cardinal George in 2014. He graduated from Holy Apostles College and Seminary with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a Masters in Divinity. As a member of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, he acts as chaplain for Quo Vadis Young Adults and has worked with digital communications and the graphic arts for many years.
The question came up: Why all the changes in the Church? The Rosary used to be fifteen decades, now it is twenty decades. Why can’t they just leave things alone? The answer boils down to keeping in mind two principles:
- If there is a development of doctrine throughout Church history, there certainly can be a development of devotion. True devotion always follows upon and is in the service of true doctrine.
- Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition have the Magisterium of the Catholic Church as sole custodian and interpreter. Even Heaven, through the person of the Blessed Virgin Mary, waited for the Church to declare the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854 beforeshe stated her name “I am the Immaculate Conception” in 1858.
Therefore, the Pope and all bishops in union with him, who make up the Ordinary Magisterium of the Church, can and may contribute to the development of the Rosary and other popular devotions.The Question Came up

Listen to a very interesting interview and learn new insights on the Message of Fatima from Fr. Francisco Pereira, chaplain of the Shrine in Fatima, Portugal.
The question came up: Who is the patron saint for gardeners? According to Catholic Online, the patron saints for gardeners are: Adelard, Fiacre, Rose of Lima, and when you really think about it, Adam. My Catholic Source adds: Dorothy, Phocas, and Tryphon. We recently celebrated St. Isidore the farmer. He was a day laborer who did farming work outside Madrid. He attended Mass every day before he went into the fields. He and his wife, Maria Torribia had a little boy, who died in infancy. Henceforth, they lived together chastely and gave freely to the poor. Isidore died in 1130 and was canonized in 1622. Maria was canonized in 1697. St. Isidore is the patron for farmers.
One interesting fact about Isidore and Maria is their decision to live chastely. Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within a person and thus the inner unity of a person in his bodily and spiritual being. Living continently out of love for God is the celibate state. Celibacy is viewed by the Church as a gift from God – it is a charism of the Holy Spirit. It is never to be viewed as a lugubrious treatment of one’s body or of another person’s body. Celibacy and virginity are beautiful, not dirty.
Whether it is for vegetables or for flowers, garden work truly demonstrates the fresh, spontaneous, and generous work of the Holy Spirit. The flower which symbolizes chastity is the white lily. St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, is depicted in statues and pictures holding a lily. All the saints mentioned above share in some way this fragrant attribute of Jesus – His Purity of Heart. Perhaps St. Isidore and St. Maria were inspired by the Holy Family to live out their days in chastity in the service of charity for the purpose of offering the total gift of self as did Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
