John Buchanan was the coach of arguably the greatest cricket team ever.

He took over as the head coach of the Australian men’s cricket team after they had won the 1999 world cup and set about making them a team that dominated world cricket for the next 8 years.

With two more world cup wins in 2003 and 2007 along with test series wins all around the world as well as becoming the first team to score over 400 in a 50 ODI, not to mention all the legends of Aussie cricket that were part of the team during these years and a whole host of other records, all make JB coaching career a phenomenal story.

During this conversation, we explore these years as well as his ideas around coaching, which can all be encapsulated in the simple phrase... if better is possible.

His coaching methods set trends that are still being used in coaching today.

Keith Ingram a former professional cricketer who played for Gauteng and KZN B  is on a mission to ensure that other cricketers do not experience the same as he did.

See, his playing career was cut short due to a severe back injury and this primarily happened due to bowling with poor technique.

So now as a CSA Level 3 coach he specializes in coaching young and old to better fundamentals so that they can play the game knowing their chances of injury is reduced.

I am so excited to introduce to you my 50th guest on the podcast.

Mike Cooper is a high performance coach who works with the structure of human experience and performance.

In this convo we delve into topics around coaching like I have not yet done with other guests, so I will leave them as a bit of a surprise.

Mike is also the person who 12 years ago introduced me to Meta Coaching, the coaching methodology I use in my capacity as a mental performance coach.

It’s really is weird sometimes how we get to meet people…

My guest... James Tranter and I met via a new app called Clubhouse in some random room most probably about sport or performance.

And so naturally I had to get him on... I love his thinking around in general about sport and life…

and so in this convo we explored... just enjoying the sport we play to taking the little steps daily and weekly that makes us enjoy the process.

As well as... some aspects around physical development in sports and most importantly I think James shares candidly around his personal struggles with mental health.

If ever there was a podcast that blew my mind... this conversation with Rhys Thomas is right up there…

As he speaks frankly about his personal struggles with life in the fast lane, to his career as a professional rugby player ending... quite literally... in a heart beat, to all the lessons he learned on the way, that involved addiction, loss of identity and a journey that is jaw dropping.

Here is the thing… This convo cannot happen without you…

So when I say ‘thank you for listening in to The Coaching Convo’, I really mean that… I mean if you were not listening in then technically I would be wasting my time.  And you make, having and sharing these convo’s all worthwhile.

So as I share these with you, keep passing them on to anyone else that you feel will get value, learning and insights from listening to them too.

Ok…

My guest today is… Min Patel… a Indian born former English Cricketer who played for Kent Cricket… His first class record of 630 wickets at an average of 30 would suggest he could have played more, than just the two test matches he played for England.

Some highlights in this conversation for me was…

  • Specialisation in coaching.
  • Leading with questions.
  • Involving all the stakeholders.
  • Addressing the biggest gap.

What do you say when you have the opportunity to speak with an athlete who was a 2004 Olympic Team Alternate, a 2 x All-American at the NCAA level for Oregon State University… and who has spent 7 years on tour with Cirque du Soleil Amaluna.

Well you ask them to come onto your podcast of course.

My guest this week is my new friend Laura-Ann Chong, she is / was all of that and more, of course, as we are always more than just the things we do.

This convo was so interesting as we explore what it is like to fly, the differences between our sporting worlds and where and what a gymnast focuses on during performance, that every athlete is unique, what it is like to be an elite athlete at the age of 11 and so many other topics that I believe will have huge value for you.

I had the privilege of being joined by Kieran Powell who is a cricketer that has played 40 Tests and 46 ODI’s for West Indies.

My personal coaching career has been influenced deeply by a hand full of people or books I have read.

So when my guest Wayne Goldsmith said yes to joining me on the podcast I was jumping up and down like a little child.

It must have been about 15 years ago that I first read an article that Wayne wrote and I was hooked. Wayne writes regularly on coaching, sport, performance in a way that introduces for the most part, a different way of thinking about coaching.

International sports coaching expert, Wayne Goldsmith has influenced the coaching, thinking and teaching of some of the world’s leading athletes, coaches and teams.

With over 25 years experience working with some of the best coaches, athletes, teams and sporting organisations in the world, WG Coaching offers an unparalleled opportunity for you to become the coach you dream of becoming. Wayne gives everyone he works with the tools – and the inspiration they need to be all they can be.

His client list includes: United States Olympic Committee, Sydney Roosters NRL, Tennis Australia, Australian Rugby Union/Wallabies, Singapore Sports Council, Swimming South Africa, United Kingdom Sports Institute, Sport New Zealand and more.

It’s not everyday that you have the opportunity to have a conversation with someone you admired when they were playing.

Jimmy Adams, the current Director of Cricket at Cricket West Indies is someone like that for me.

I remember watching the West Indies teams play when I was younger and he would be a player I would love to watch.

We talk about his career, coaching, making better decisions, finding teachable moments

His humbleness, openess and willingness to share from his experiences made this a conversation I won’t forget.

I hope you will appreciate this conversation for the value it has packed inside.

Can a cricketer bowl faster? According to my guest, Steffan Jones… they can.  Steffan, is a Fast Bowling Development Coach and he is breaking new ground in coaching fast bowlers from all over the world.  By combining the science of strength and conditioning along with a deeper understanding of what makes bowlers bowl fast and as he says ‘measuring everything’, he is a breath of fresh air in a world where coaches use overly simple and vague instruction and outdated methods.
