My Journey:
It's been many weeks since I have left journal notes. I'm not sure what's left to say. The show is gaining followers everyday. I'm not sure what is left to say. After nearly 20 years in talk radio in Cincinnati, I hated that my career rested in the hands of others. What I am doing now, I have always wanted to do. Where will this road lead?
The next steps are to aggressively make contact with potential advertisers and sponsors, make contact with potential affiliates and to make sure that every single mover and shaker in the media industry knows my name. It's hustle time. My name is Nathan and this my journey.

Journey Notes: This marks the first time that written about my journey in some time. I have some cool news. Just yesterday, I was browsing various search engines. I wanted to view what the results were when I searched for my show. I stumbled across a piece titled, "Black Radio Stations Matter" written by Darryl Parks. Darryl Parks was a long time program director and talk radio personality in Cincinnati. His piece was very flattering. What's interesting is that while originally posted in February, I just came across it. Is this serendipity? ( I have always wanted to use that word in a sentence, hooray for me!) Sometimes you need to be reminded of your talents. Shout out to Darryl for the love. If you read the piece you will see that the man is absolutely correct. I cannot afford to be humble right now. I am going to take my show to the next level. The next step for me is to actively court sponsorship's and advertisers.
I started my own company Superlative Flows Media LLC so that I can legally do business. I have taken the steps to put my self in a position to capitalize on my own talents. The way I see it, the talk radio game is similar to the rap game, content is king. If this is true, then a talent such as myself does not need to be with a "major".
Corporate radio cannot prosper without talent. If you listen to the current state of corporate talk radio, its old, stale, predictable, uninspired and tired.
My vision for my company is to create a new voice with roots in the city of my birth. I have the drive. I have the talent. I have the audience. Now I need to pull it all together. This is a journey. One man, one microphone, one path, my only option is success.

On this episode Nathan talks to Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley. The conversation starts at the 42 min and 13 seconds mark. We talk about his reflections of the Cincinnati riots which happened 15 years ago (April 7th 2001). I also give him a chance to walk a back his handling of the firing of the former chief of Cincinnati police Blackwell. We talk about the connection between poverty and crime in Cincinnati. and he admits that he initially handled the Syrian refugee crisis wrong. The conversation lasted a little over 35 minutes.

Journey Notes: (Nathan is documenting his journey on each episode, giving you behind-the-scenes access into the evolution of his start-up)
I do my research. I consider December 3rd, 2015 as my rebirth. It was on that day that I was informed that my former employer no longer needed my services. After 11 years of cutting through the BS, naming the names, exposing the games and outpacing the lames, I was talk radio ronin, a talk warrior with no "master". Imagine Afro-Samurai with a microphone, possessor of the #1 Flow and I slowly walked away from the place that had been my talk radio home. I spent the weekend weighing my options. Dozens of people reached out to me. I took some more serious than others.
Truth is, I knew what I wanted to do the moment that my former employers told me what they were going to do. I spent the next 3 months researching. I spent countless hours learning the online radio game. I fell asleep with my phone in my hand, glasses on my face, slumped over the desk in my office more times than I can count. I taught myself everything that I need to plant my own flag on the internet. Podcasting, internet radio, SEO, RSS, equipment, software, you name it. I studied it. Combined with my nearly 20 years in public and commercial radio, I feel confident that I can compete online. #teamNI is supporting me. With them behind me, I feel like I can carve out a niche, a space, a network for myself, from ronin to king!
People keep asking me, "what station are you working for now?" My response is always the same, "the best one-my own!". Could I get another job in talk radio? There is no doubt about it. Most of the folks in commercial talk radio have no style, no flair, no flow. But, I refuse to be governed by other peoples expectations. I don't want to be what other people expect me to be. Some people think that I have to work for someone else, in order to be successful-those people are sorely mistaken. I think they mean well, but they lack imagination, perhaps guts. Good thing for my audience, I have an ample supply of both. I have started my own company, an LLC. This company will provide the legal framework for everything that I do moving forward. Not only will it produce the Nathan Ivey Show, but soon I am going to produce a series of podcasts dedicated to helping others bring their own visions to fruition. I do my research and it's helped me to circumvent what would have been major problems. This past Friday, I spent 10 minutes talking with a man who just started podcasting. I was able to help him increase the quality of his sound by the end of our conversation. I have been given good counsel from folks that believe in me and I intend on paying it forward. Most Cincinnati dudes hit a bump in the road toward their dreams and give up-I'm not most Cincinnati dudes. I'm the last MF left with nerve in the city. Check back for more...

The show has a very good following. I am humbled by the support that I continue to have. The day I left Radio One, I remember thinking to myself, "Now I'm going to do what I have always wanted to do". I'm grew tired of allowing others to maximize my talents. Radio One was good to me and for me. I was given wide latitude to develop. I met a lot of talented people, who I am still cool with to this day. My first regular gig in commercial radio was hosting "Straight Talk on 101.1 The Wiz. Edna Howell made Straight Talk an institution. I was nervous and excited when I got the job. I was born to do this, so I quickly settled in and made it my own. Listeners responded with love. After many years of the show being broadcast live, the decision was made for Straight Talk to be moved to an earlier time frame and to be prerecorded (remind me to tell you the story behind that move). Management still wanted me the host the show, and after some thought I decided to stick with the project. I did so for many reasons. I knew that no one else in the city would bring to the project what I have and since I didn't have much experience in production to that point-I took it has a challenge and an opportunity to expand my skills. Looking back, I developed skills that I am directly using today with my new project 'Nathan Ivey Online". I'm "OCD" about sound quality. I want my sound to be perfect. I'm not saying that I'm there yet, but I don't mind spending the time to get it right. Lucky for me., I spent many years prerecording Straight Talk, so I know exactly what I need to do. Big things are in the works. I am working on several partnerships that will, hopefully, expose the show to different audiences. Being the King of Straight Talk is hard work. Heavy is the crown-but I'm ready.
(Update) We took a BIG step today in starting a new business in Ohio. I have been given some great counsel and I'm excited about this new part of my professional career. Soon Ohio will have another minority owned business. This is due, in a super large part, because of #teamNI . Thank you again
