Our mission is to redefine the word "professionalism" by empowering Latino/ Latina/ Latinx communities to be their authentic selves. When we are told to be professional, in many ways we are told to not be ourselves.
On this podcast, we have candid conversations and explore the conflict that we often face between being our authentic selves & "professionalism". The podcast is named ¿Quién Tú Eres? because that’s the question that we want each guest to answer. Listen to find out who we really are...when we stop code-switching. Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Mag Rodriguez.
Mag is the founder of EVEN. It's a creative platform that enables artists to sell their music directly to fans. In the first month on EVEN LaRussell generated $100K in revenue with the support of 4,000 fans. Artists on EVEN include French Montana, Jidenna, Omarion, LaRussell, Kota the Friend, Ransom, 38 Spesh, and many others.
Mag founded the platform last year to help black and brown artists retain equity in their creative work. EVEN is a way for fans to connect directly with their favorite artists, and it’s also an opportunity for the artists to monetize to take a bit more control over the monetization strategy compared to streaming - which is often criticized for not giving artists a quality cut of the revenue.
This week Mag Rodriguez tells us all about his journey through the music industry and his experience as an entrepreneur. Having started his music management career while he was still in high school, he has learned a ton of lessons on the way. And while he feels like he’s gotten wiser as he’s gotten older, he still takes tips from his younger, more rebellious self.

He represented the New York region under Division III. In this week's episode, Manny shares how he leads by example and creates positive representation for his athletes. Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Rachel Lowenstein.
Rachel is the Global Head of Inclusive Innovation at Mindshare, leading strategy and innovation for how brands use marketing, media, and technology to reshape society for good. A respected industry thought leader, Rachel has worked with some of the biggest brands in the world, including Unilever and Booking.com. As an autistic woman, Rachel is a content creator on TikTok, LinkedIn, and Instagram to educate and advocate for neuroinclusion. Rachel has over 90,000 people in her community across platforms because of her unique perspectives as a creative leader who is autistic.
In this eye-opening episode, we dive into Rachel's incredible journey of self-discovery, as she shares how her autism diagnosis became a catalyst for improving her mental well-being and unleashing her creativity in the workplace. Before receiving her diagnosis, Rachel grappled with a challenging concept known as "masking," commonly experienced by autistic individuals. She felt compelled to hide her true traits or behaviors to fit into society's mold of being "neurotypical," leading to feelings of being misunderstood and overstimulated by societal pressures to be constantly available.
However, everything changed after her diagnosis. Armed with the knowledge of her condition, Rachel realized that she wasn't "crazy" for feeling the way she did. This newfound understanding empowered her to embrace her authentic self and unapologetically express her unique qualities. Now, she passionately helps others in the workplace and their daily lives to embrace their true selves, fostering a culture of acceptance and inclusivity.

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Barney Abramson.
Barney Abramson’s creative journey began in the Dominican Republic staying indoors and drawing his favorite 80s cartoons all day long. That creative passion grew into a fruitful career and he went on to become an award-winning designer. In addition to his day job, Barney consults as a creative director, strategist, and manager. He helps businesses and individuals with their creative problems. When he’s not designing, he’s writing about his experiences as an Afro-Latino creative in corporate America. He uses social media to connect, mentor, teach, and inspire the next generation of designers.
This week, Barney discusses his life after immigrating to the US as a child, attempting to assimilate into mostly white neighborhoods, and how that affected his confidence as a young professional. Barney admits that he would take on a Funny Guy persona to seem more palatable to his white coworkers. However, even though he was accepted as the funny guy, he still felt a distance between himself and his peers. It wasn’t until he started undoing past traumas that he became more comfortable in his own skin - even at work.

Barney’s creative journey began on a little island in the Caribbean. While the other kids were flying kites and playing baseball, he was alone in his room drawing his favorite 80s cartoons. That creative passion grew into a fruitful career and he went on to become an award-winning designer. In many ways, Barney is living proof that, despite its shortcomings, the American dream is still alive and well.
Barney Abramson was born in the Dominican Republic and was raised there until the age of ten. His family migrated to the United States in the late 80s, eventually settling in Lawrence, MA, a small immigrant town located a few miles north of Boston.
In 2002, Barney graduated from Bridgewater State University with a dual Bachelor of Fine Arts and Corporate Communication degree. Since then, he’s worked as a graphic designer and, most recently, as a creative manager in the wonderful city of Las Vegas.
In addition to his day job, he consults as a creative director, strategist, and manager. He helps businesses and individuals with creative problems. When he’s not designing, he’s writing about his experiences as an Afro-Latino creative in corporate America. Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is joMi.
joMi is an independent artist, songwriter, and poet from Northern California. He burst onto the music scene in late 2017 with the release of his mixtape, "Behind The Curtain.” His music is a fusion of acid hip-hop jazz-inspired beats with socially conscious lyrics that offer a glimpse into the struggles faced by minorities.
Due to his rough childhood, joMi has had to fight for everything he has, which includes his career in construction management. However, not one to be caught slipping, joMi promotes his music under his stage name. This way he can create music about his upbringing and validate his own experiences without being found out by his company or coworkers. This week joMi dives deep into his personal life and explains how he maintains a balance between his career in construction and his passion for music.

“You’re never gonna get a job if you're an entrepreneur.”
That’s what this week’s guest said on the podcast and I have to admit, I was shocked. That’s a very bold statement. But I was even more shocked when I realized that he was right.
We’ve seen it too many times. We are told to quiet our voices and make ourselves smaller. Even if we know what we’re talking about and we are the best person on the team, some people will do anything they can to keep us in “our place.”
So what happens when you become bigger than your job?
That’s the question that we tackle on this week's episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast. And this week’s guest is none other than the incredible Jonathan J. Mentor.
Jonathan J. Mentor is a revenue growth expert that provokes the economic growth and visibility of disadvantaged humans in B2B tech. He is proud to be a Latinx, Black, Queer father. He is the Founder & CEO of Successment, a revenue growth partner for diverse tech startups where he developed BOOM®, a 4-step growth process that uncomplicates RevOps Science®. His inspiration for Successment is his commitment to the success of disadvantaged humans. Success + Commitment = Successment.
When he went from being a cashier to a corporate broker, the culture shock was overwhelming. However, Jonathan was able to listen and learn from his peers. His ability to adapt and excel at his work made him way bigger than career as a broker. He very quickly became LinkedIn famous and started moonlighting on his own.
And even though Jonathan was earning the company millions of dollars in revenue, his co-workers felt threatened by his success outside of his corporate job. In the end, they offered him a severance package and told him it was his last day. From there he decided to invest in himself and start his own business. This was the birth of Successment.
This week we talk about

Vanessa Correa recently took the role of Vice President and DEI Marketing Strategy Lead at JPMorgan Chase & Co. after five years at Freddie Mac, where she was the marketing lead for equitable housing initiatives handling content strategy, brand development, paid media, and marketing events. Vanessa hails from The Bronx, was born to two Puerto Ricans, and is a quintessential 80s baby.
This week on the podcast, Vanessa shares how her upbringing shaped her self-confidence as an adult. Her childhood prepared her to stand her ground and enforce her boundaries the first time they’re breached. Which happened a lot, considering how often people in majority white spaces felt entitled to her intelligence.

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Kayla Castañeda, who is the founder of Agua Bonita. Here's a quick bio...in Kayla's own words...
Much like the aguas frescas we make, my family history starts in Mexico and settles in the fruit fields of the Central Valley of California. My ancestors immigrated to the states pursuing the opportunity for a better life and following the migrant farm work as field workers, which led us here – where we grow 60% of the nation’s produce!
Growing up here, my grandpa would bring us home super ripe fruit from the fields that he couldn’t just stand to let go to waste. This fruit would be sprinkled with chile powder or made into aguas frescas for the whole family to enjoy.
When I lost my job mid-pandemic, I took it as “when life gives you lemons, make aguas frescas.” I decided to create something that is reflective of my culture, my family, and my grandpa’s teachings of never letting food go to waste (and not too much sugar – he was diabetic), and Agua Bonita was born. We’ve carried on the tradition of taking real fruit from the fields and creating a delicious drink to share with everyone, from our home to your hands.

$ isn’t a requirement to be your most authentic self at work. It sure does give you a boost of confidence knowing that when your savings account is stacked. If you’re disrespected at work, you can quit and let that savings account and investments hold you down for a while.

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves.
Antonio Morales is a licensed clinical social worker and the founder of The Liberated Self Therapeutic Services, LLC, a private practice dedicated to serving the mental health needs of Black and Brown folk, across communities. Our mission is “to disrupt and dismantle the psychological chaos and confusion of white supremacy, as we facilitate a transformative healing process that will allow Black and Brown folk to transcend the adverse impact of our current and historical, intergenerational, complex racial trauma.”
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Antonio identifies as a mixed race Afro Boricua and honors his indigenous African and Taino ancestors through his work, while grappling with the dilemma of knowing that European blood runs through his veins. As a product of the European colonization of the Western Hemisphere, Antonio understands the importance of addressing the historical, intergenerational, complex racial trauma that exists within him, as well as the communities he serves.
Antonio believes that healing from and transcending the adverse impact of white supremacy is, by default, revolutionary. The process of Black and Brown folk becoming self-actualized, whole and complete human beings, while giving ourselves permission to express our divine greatness, in the face of white supremacy, is the ultimate act of rebellion and a radicalized expression of liberation.

- What's the difference between someone you look up to and a mentor?
- Apparently people are building their own personal board of directors? WTF is that?
- Should your mentor look like you? Same culture/ ethnicity/ gender/ "insert other identity qualifier"?

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves.
The first episode (from years ago) was so good, we had to run it back with Hector Castillo Carvajal, who's founder of Don Carvajal Café. He's actually the first guest that has been featured twice on this podcast.
Hector is an Afro-Latino entrepreneur on a mission to reimagine the specialty coffee market. He was born on a small farm in the Dominican Republic and returned there often while growing up in the Bronx, an experience that gave him a unique perspective on the coffee supply chain. After pursuing his education at CUNY-Guttman and the University of Rochester, Hector has returned to the Bronx to build a coffee business model that is both fair to producers and inclusive to consumers. In just two years, he’s taken the brand from operating out of a dorm room to a city-wide distribution network that roasts 500 pounds of beans each week.

On July 7, 2022 Arielle Egozi posted “sex work” as a work experience on her LinkedIn. It went viral on the platform and across world news, sparking global debate about what is considered “professional” for a professional platform.
On the heels of the Great Resignation, this session will explore and unpack what “professionalism” really means, why code-switching and assimilation is bad for mental health and for business, and how creating work environments that are inclusive and celebratory of all identities is not only the future, but is the right now.
From neurodivergence to the politics of hair and code-switching body language, this conversation will be real, unapologetic, and demand a new perspective from its audience (but, like, in a fun way).

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week, we have the pleasure of speaking with Daniella Sladen.
When Daniella Sladen co-founded Zulu Pods with her husband Rob, she decided to build a company to revolutionize aerospace engineering and build a culture that was inclusive and family-friendly in hopes of transforming the industry entirely.
As one of few Latina women in the aerospace engineering field, Daniella knew changes in the industry would only happen if she initiated them herself. Her deep appreciation for diversity is reflected today in an accepting company culture she fosters that embraces people from different backgrounds and supports new mothers in the workplace—a theme of critical importance to her.
As the company's Co-Founder and CTO, Daniella comes to Zulu Pods with cross-functional experience in structures, thermals, and design engineering. With expertise in the gas turbine engine field, she has worked on the design of bearing compartments and external lubrication systems of various advanced military engines.
Her superpower? Radical creativity in solving problems that others may not have even known were there. Daniella earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Central Florida. Before the inception of Zulu Pods, Daniella worked at a leading American aerospace manufacturer.

Lexie Perez - Global Planning Director
Here's a quick bio...in her own words.
As an Afro-Latinx Bronx-raised woman - I bring the intersections of gender, class, and race to my strategic and marketing practice. My specialties include: Advocate for unheard voices, speak truth to power, interrogate binary ideas and assumptions, identify humanity beyond data, translate insights into actions, look inward and outward for fresh perspectives. As a natural outsider, I bring the outside in. I help brands see the world through the eyes of real people and real-world culture - not only consumers, not only data points, not only users. I bring an entrepreneur mindset & spirit to every project.
Before diving into agency planning 12 + years ago, I was a TV producer in broadcasting, telecommunications marketer, entrepreneur, and hip hop music writer. These experiences shaped my passion for human behavior, storytelling, technology, and culture. They also helped me translate my non-strategy skills into strategy skills. Today my credentials span across CPG, B2B, consumer tech, retail, and entertainment, fintech - at both global and regional levels.
I started out my career as a content creator, specialized into social /digital, and now live in the worlds of brand strategy and research. As a partner and t-shaped strategist, I bring a new perspective on helping brands move with the culture. I help them identify new opportunities for solving business problems beyond advertising and marketing. My specialties include high-level brand strategies, integrated creative strategies, people / cultural research, and granular digital/social programs. I think holistically, not in channels.
If you’re a dreamer, a rule breaker and view the impossible as a dare, or just a good human - let’s connect.

This week's episode features Kenneth Jeremiah Gomez aka Cloud Kent, who is a Contemporary POP artist who grew up in the streets of New York City. His rough beginnings as a kid enabled him to survive the concrete jungle.
His creative spark came in the form of art that his father would send from jail. Through an innocent mind, he channeled his empathy for his father as fuel to power and grow his love for art.
Although art was always a part of his life, he was put down and bullied for his passions growing up. In 2015, at the age of 25, Kennth underwent life saving open heart surgery.
After this rebirth, his heart illustrations gained new meaning … vulnerability … the expression of a child-like self. Calling on the imagery of a superhero's flight, Cloud Kent emerged as an alter ego to save him from himself - his fears, depression, and emotional incarceration.
These days, his work embodies the freedom and child-like innocence that connects the audience back to that pure part of themselves.

This week's guest is Judge Victoria Pratt.
Driven. Innovative. Inspiring. These are a few of the words used to describe Judge Victoria Pratt who has gained national and international acclaim for her commitment to reforming the criminal justice system. During her tenure as the Chief Judge in Newark Municipal Court in Newark, New Jersey, she spent years gaining a deep understanding of how justice could be delivered to court participants in a manner that increased their trust in the legal system and changed their behavior. While presiding over Newark Community Solutions, the Community Court Program, she used creative problem solving to provide alternatives to jail to low-level offenders. These alternatives included community service, individual and group counseling sessions, and her signature assignment of introspective essays. Called a pioneer in procedural justice, her respectful approach, and treating individuals with dignity has had a positive effect on court participants’ court experience, how the community viewed the court and how court players viewed their roles. Her TED Talk, How Judges Can Show Respect, has gone viral. It has been translated into 11 languages, received over one million views and the Facebook clip has received an astounding 21 million views.
A fierce advocate committed to reform, Pratt has worked with jurisdictions across the nation, and as far as Ukraine, England, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mexico. In that role she facilitates workshops and presentations on alternative sentencing for juveniles and adults, as well as procedural justice.
As a nationally recognized expert in procedural justice and alternative sentencing, Judge Pratt has been asked by numerous professional organizations to share her story and philosophy. Pratt’s work has been featured in The Guardian newspaper, The Simple Idea that Could Transform U.S. Criminal Justice, and Rutgers Magazine, Asking for a Little Respect, both written by Pulitzer prize winning author Tina Rosenberg. She has also appeared on MSNBC’s the Melissa Harris Perry Show, the Emmy-award winning PBS show Due Process- Community Court: A Kinder, Gentler Way?and National Public Radio’s WBGO: Conversations with Allan Wolper.

You'll be hearing our observations and thoughts on all things Salary Transparency including the below
Let's keep it a buck, most companies are not in favor of Salary Transparency. If they were, then they wouldn't have waited for a Law to be passed. - That said...as of 11/1, the new Salary Transparency law is now active in NYC.
So far...I’m not seeing these ranges on the LinkedIn job posts…but I am seeing them on the company website though. Go on any company career page…search for a job that’s located in NYC…and you’ll see a range for the annual base salary.
During the episode, Odalys and Pabel will explore this and...
- What does all this mean for us?
How to have productive & healthy Salary transparency conversations
Personal experiences when these conversations have been awkward
What do we want to see companies do next?

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest, AJ Polanco, is currently a Director of UX Design.
He brings 12 years of UX & product management experience and has executed strategic visions across education, pharma, hospitality, mixed-reality, fintech, e-commerce, real estate, sales, and marketing.
For ETS, he secured their first NAEP Platform Development contract, valued at $101.7 million over 5.5 years. At Verizon Wireless, his product portfolio was greater than $320 million in new sales and call-in reduction, impacting an end-user base of 35 million customers. Despite his senior role and responsibility at these companies, AJ is capable and comfortable with getting into the weeds to create wireframes, prototypes, user flows, and to review final assets for accuracy and quality.
There is more to AJ than work, though! He recently passed his preliminary exam and was bestowed the status of Doctor of Design (ABD) at North Carolina State University. His academic focus is on Digital Accessibility, and his research is on equity for Deaf and Hard of Hearing U.S. students in the space of academic assessment. In this same spirit, he loves mentoring and has a passion for teaching. At Rutgers University, he led a Masters of Business and Science concentration of User Experience.
On the fun side of things, he also has a black belt in Taekwondo, is a World Taekwondo Federation recognized referee, and has dabbled in Aikido, Budokai, Shindō Yōshin-ryū, and Kung-fu. On a final-final sidenote, he hopes to complete his dissertation by 2023, so that when he walks the aisle with his beautiful fiancé, she will have to say her vows to Dr. Polanco. All in good fun, of course!

This week's episode is featuring an interview that our host Pabel Martinez had on the Sound Judgement podcast.
Sound Judgment has become a quest to identify the universal qualities and skills of "hostiness." If I’m on a quest, Pabel Martinez is on a mission—in his case, to redefine professionalism and to empower members of Latinx community to be their authentic selves 100% of the time. He’s sharing stories of Latinx professionals who are tired of playing the assimilation game in corporate America. Like him, they are rebelling against it, after lifetimes of pretending to be other than who they actually are. And we discover a new hostiness quality: That who we are as human beings has everything to do with how we show up on the mic, and whether—or not—we connect to our audiences.
Takeaways from Pabel Martinez, host of ¿Quién Tú Eres?1. Interrupting is often helpful and we need to learn how to do it deftly. Interrupting is cultural – it’s governed by what we consider polite, which is different everywhere. My husband, from Ohio where everyone is awfully nice, used to be horrified by what I see as my enthusiasm, which means I interrupt far more often than he does. I grew up in Boston and, later, New York.
The skill of interrupting may seem pretty small, inconsequential, even, but it’s not – it’s about being a host who can create a good flow to a conversation, and stay in control of it so you can serve your listeners. 2. Is there an injustice you see, one that isn’t being addressed? You can use a podcast to fill that need, both by having the courage to share your own difficult story, and by encouraging guests to share their untold stories on your show. Representation matters. We know this, but Pabel is showing it. Listeners tell Pabel that because of ¿Quién Tú Eres?, they no longer feel alone. And that gives them strength to make changes they didn’t have the courage to do before.
That response says a lot about the connection a host on a mission can create with their audience. Could you help your audience know they’re not alone? 3. While I believe there are universal qualities and skills to hostiness – I’m on that quest to uncover them – I also believe there is no single definition of a “great” or “best” host. Because, like my mother used to always say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That said, we can certainly know when a host is beloved. Not everyone will love you. But your ideal audience will, if: you understand who you’re talking to.
Are you serving that person? Do you know what they need to hear, and are you willing to go there? Pabel admitted that it’s hard for him to share episodes like the one he did about his salary, and the one he did about quitting his job at TikTok – but that they were among the most popular of all of his episodes. So get to know your ideal listeners very well. Care for them. Let your work speak to them. And, depending on your goals, speak out FOR them.
4. Who we are as a human has everything to with who we are on the mic.
And what I realized is that who we are as human beings has everything to do with who we are on the mic.If we are courageous, it shows. If we know who our listeners are and love them, it shows. If we are ashamed of something in our lives and that holds us back from expressing our full selves as hosts, it shows. If we are making our podcast (or giving our speech or writing our story) solely to support our business and make money – purely for our own ends – it shows. It doesn’t matter if we’re actually sharing personal stories or not: listeners hear and respond to our character in our voices, regardless of the format. So Pabel’s question — Quién Tú Eres? — applies to all of us.
Before you turn on the mic, spend some time with his question.
Who are you?

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest, Giovanna “Gigi” Gonzalez, teaches financial literacy and career readiness to first-generation Latinas. Through educational workshops and her TikTok account (@thefirstgenmentor), she's built a community of over 195,000+. She holds a BA in Economics, a certificate in investment performance measurement, and 10 years of experience in financial services.
Here's a bit more about her...in her own words..."As a first-gen Latina myself, I’ve experienced the discomfort and overwhelm that comes from attempting to manage, invest, and grow my income as the first in the family to enter these spaces. I’ve experienced reaching the level of success my family dreamed of me and having the desire to give back and uplift the same people who sacrificed so much to help get me here. I remember how it felt to be lost and want guidance on how to support my loved ones and while planning my financial future and not find it. I set out to change that by paving the way for those who come behind me through guidance, mentorship, and financial education."

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where our mission is to redefine professionalism. Each week, we have a new guest join us for a candid conversation around the conflict they have experienced between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest, Roberto "Beto" Rizo, is a US born Mexican that moved to the US at the age of 17 from Jalisco, Mexico. He is an advocate of multiculturalism and a believer that we can transcend cultural barriers through communication and compassion.
Beto produces and hosts ¿Qué te tomas? Podcast - a show created to offer a space for latinx immigrants and first-gen to share their stories of adversity, success, growth, and realization and explore the idea of identity. The two goals of the show are to change the perception of the “forever suffering immigrant” by showing that we can make it big and thrive in the US, and to help listeners discover a deeper love for their cultures, their background, and themselves.
Today, Roberto is the Northern California Field Representative for U.S. Senator Alex Padilla—the first ever Latino elected to represent CA in the US Senate—where he oversees government relations strategy for half of California's geographic area. He is responsible for developing key relationships and fostering collaboration across all levels of government, business, community groups, and the general public.
Most recently, at the CA Secretary of State he managed outreach campaigns engaging over ten million people in different target markets, including Latinx, Black, Asian and other underrepresented communities.
In his spare time he does stand-up comedy as an artistic outlet. Through his comedy, he shares his experience as an immigrant navigating US culture and laughs at the inequalities in society that are hidden in plain sight. As an actor he is currently signed to perform in the 2022-2023 season with the Sacramento Theater Company.

Michael Lopez is a graphic designer whose work can be found at www.postlopez.com. Originally from San Diego, now living in Los Angeles with their cartoonist spouse Rachel Dukes and 2 cats. They are Chicanx and non-binary.
Michael Lopez also shared the below post on LinkedIn and it went viral. This is his first and only interview about the situation and we are proud that he decided to share his story on our platform.
I'm a queer brown person and I was fired during Pride month for speaking up in defense of abortion rights at Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) (a subsidiary of Universal Music Group).
Last Friday, like countless other folks, I was devastated by the news of the supreme court's attack on abortion rights. Paired with the flood of anti-queer and anti-trans legislation, it's been hard to process how company's expect us to be productive while our rights are being stripped away. Especially when our company has been donating to several of these politicians (link in comments).
Every Friday, one of my tasks was to process reports for upcoming releases. This is an email list that goes out to 275 people. I don't know who's on it, I just knew it was the email list with the most people that I had access to. So I sent the following message:
Subject line: UMe Schedules
Message:
I didn't do them today.
I'm in mourning due to the attack on people with uteruses in the US. Federally guaranteed access to abortion is gone.
Vivendi and Universal Music Group must stop donating to anti-abortion, anti-queer and anti-trans politicians. Politicians like Marsha Blackburn, Ken Buck, Victoria Spartz, etc. Or expect more unproductive days.
Yours in fury,
-Michael Lopez
The immediate aftermath was several supportive emails from other co-workers and a manager calling to tell me to take the rest of the day off. I appreciate the love from my coworkers, and I figured, based on management's response, there was a good possibility I might be fired as a result. But I was proud of letting allies know that our company has been donating to these politicians.
Around 9:30-ish today, I got a surprise Zoom video chat with HR. I was being let go for (paraphrasing) "Not doing your job, disrupting the day of 275 people and poor judgement." I was told to log out and that a courier would be there to pick up my laptop from my apartment within the hour.
Anticipating that I'd get shut out of my computer very soon, I sent a follow up to the email list:
Hey ya’ll,
Just got fired for this email from Friday, so they’re letting you know where they stand on employees speaking out on politicians that support marginalization for folks like me.
A brown queer person terminated during Pride month speaking in support of abortion rights. Seems like that’s exactly what America is all about right now.
Peace out,
-Michael Lopez
I don't speak for my former company. I speak for myself and employees that will suffer under these discriminatory laws.
Their actions today, their silence on Friday are indicative of their motivations. Profit at all costs. Solidarity, only if it's profitable. And above all of that is maintaining the status quo and saying fuck you to the working class.

That opportunity to interact directly with the community that supports you...makes the conversation even more fun. Shoutout to the almost 800 unique people that tuned into the first episode of our Unfiltered (with my cohost Odalys Jasmine Garcia Arce).
I was humbled by the amount of people that joined...and the level of engagement(reactions and comments) that flooded the screen. I think the participation was strong because of the topics that were discussed during the conversation. These experiences often either go untold or told anonymously. We are scared to be open about certain topics because of retaliation, judgement, and isolation.
Below are a few of the topics we discussed:

His ability to build genuine trust and help people around him shine is why he has been recruited to work at some of the most influential companies in history — including LinkedIn, Google, Uber, and Tesla.
Not bad for a “boy from the Bronx who's first generation”.

In this episode, Pabel Martinez (host of this podcast), opens up about his viral LinkedIn post about Latina Equal Pay day. Pabel shares 3 lessons that he learned and challenges the audience to do some self reflection around our relationship with money and salary transparency.
Find him on LinkedIn with this link and find his viral post by clicking this link. Below, we've included an excerpt from his post.
How many people know how much money you make?
Up until this post...only my accountant knew...and that's because he does my taxes. Not even my Mom was privy to this information! I haven't shared this information with my family, girlfriend, or friends.
Like many others, I've been trained (at work & home) to believe that this information should NEVER be shared.
1) Work: We are often encouraged to not share our job level as well as our compensation packages. Sharing this information would likely force companies to pay equal wages (across the same roles & levels). This behavior doesn't help individuals though. Employees are often lowballed and accept for offers well below what their counterparts were offered.
2) Home: I was told that it will create jealousy, envy, among other emotions. I was warned people will aim to take advantage of my situation. These situations are real and happen often. That said, I'm ready for the pocket watchers.
With #LatinaEqualPayDay being last week, I couldn't help to think about how this secrecy impacts the discrepancy in wages. Imagine the power of going into salary negotiations for a role...and you already know how much someone on that team makes.
Transparency is how I'm helping to close the gap.

A San Diego native with a laugh as big as her hair. These are just a few things we would use to describe our Founder and Host of The Wine & Chisme Podcast, Jessica Yañez. But that’s just the beginning.
Jessica grew up in the suburbs of San Diego and has always had a curiosity for other people and their stories. As far back as she can remember, she would be the first to approach a new student at school, introduce herself, and want to know all about them. Not much has changed as her curiosity has lent itself well to learning more about the world around her.
She specifically created the podcast to amplify the voices of those from the BIPOC community to share their stories on career, love, life and more. All while sipping on a glass of wine.

Ruben Harris is a Bay Area transplant from Atlanta, Georgia. As he mentioned in the clip, he bought a one-way ticket from Atlanta…moved to San Francisco without a job or any experience in tech and landed a position (in Partnerships and Sales) 3 weeks later. He documented this whole experience in viral blog post called Breaking Into Startups.
After receiving thousands of e-mails asking how to break into tech, Ruben Co-Founded the Breaking Into Startups Podcast to demystify the process, resulting in a social media reach of ~3 million people, 200,000+ downloads, 10,000+ website visits per month, over 100+ reviews on iTunes, a Facebook Community of 10,000+ people, and invitations to be a Contributor for TechCrunch and Black Enterprise.
These days, he’s the CEO of Career Karma…which is the easiest way to find a job training program online. Career Karma helps over 1 million workers navigate their careers every month through advice and coaching. By offering free coaching and peer mentorship, Career Karma has grown to over 150,000 members from every background and profession. They already closed a $10M Series A funding round, and this is clearly just the beginning.
Fun fact: Ruben has been playing the cello for ~25 years. He has taught music, performed in venues all over the world - including Carnegie Hall, and landed placements from Def Jam.
