On trails we find both solace and community. Moments of flow that bend time and enhance perception of place. Opportunities to test limits and reconnect to roots in play. Unification of our unique collage of backstories and communities into an amazing collective. The Trails Collective seeks to celebrate that narrative through interviews with people who love and live east coast trail running.
Join us as we chat with a few amazing individuals following amazing performances. Arlen Glick established a new course record of 12:57 at one of the most historic races in the country and region, the Umstead 100. Mike Smith, with a team of support, finished his 200th 100-Miler also at Umstead. And Cole Crosby was the first to finish the OG route of the 346 Mile Speed Project in 92 hours.
On this week's Trails Collective Live round were joined by Jana Fridrichova, Tristan Baxendale, & Lee Arbogast with tall tales of bus fires & rigamortous @ the Georgia Death Race. Trevor Fye, Sarah Wallace & Matt Lipsey regaling a day and night in the mud and frozen corneas @ the Rabid Raccoon. And we close out with Matt Pacheco, Brenda Chaffee, & Steven Estremara digging into mud hole spirit animals and the abberation of gnomes riding unicorns at Spring On The Trails. Join us.
In this round we went deep on the Adirondacks with Michael Brockway, Sarah Keyes, Laura Tuttle, and Jay Whitebourne chatting on runable routes, classic FKT lines, and favorite locations and establishments for caloric intake.
In this round we climbed into the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Conversing on community, mountains, trail, and favorites will be Brie Choate, Andrew Drummond, Jess Marion, and Steven Larick.
The World Marathon Challenge. Although non-trail, this has been an event that has stoked my imagination and inspiration. Join us as we welcome 2023 winners David Kilgore & Deirdre Keane, and prior winner Michael Wardian to offer a glimpse of this incredible adventure. We'll then hang onto Kilgore a bit longer to dig into his world a bit.
In this episode we dug into some of the best trail destination tips, ruins-porn best-of's, and lore from the Catskills. We'll be joined by Catskill grid finishers Phil Vondra and Mike Suidy, as well as Escarpment RD and legend Dick Vincent.
In this episode we went long with Craig Fleming, Head PA Trail Dog. Gabe M & Trent Swanson, with Mike Coutu and Erin Hawk on the DUC 100k / ALQ50k double and the Delmarva Trail Community. The Frozen Snot with RD Luke Ebeling, Aaron Watkins, and Steph Daniels. This is #BeastCoast Trail.
This week we start digging in with BeastCoast legend John Geesler. John's covered more race distance than all but a dozen, with his own style, and uncanny ability to come back from the seeming dead. For a focal event this week, we connect with Kim Levinsky of Sassquad Trail Running on the weekend's Frosty Fat Sass along with a part of the CULTRA crew who laid down a quality six hours of trail, mud, community, and laughs.

Ellie Pell has just returned from representing the Trails Collective at the Bandera 100k Golden Ticket race. While there she secured second place after a hard fought battle with Utah's Leah Yingling. She plans to represent the east coast at the Western States 100 Mile race this June. In this interview, Ian Golden, owner of the Trails Collective and mentor to Ellie digs deep into what went into this race. He asks probing questions about race strategy, nutrition, psychology and takes questions from the Collective.
This episode is the first of hopefully bright things to come from east coast runners on the national stage.

Elisabeth Faughnan has got MAJOR TRAIL STOKE and it SHOWS! Coming to the trails just two years ago, she has found her stride and happy place. Elisabeth recently completed her first 50 mile on the Cayuga Trails course, so no easy trail or road ultra for her! This race meant so much to Elisabeth, and we get into it deep during this episode. We talk about moving from roads to trails, training and running happy and her tough year slog of running and how she got out of it.
We go through the entire 50 mile race, how she fueled, her support and why she just loves the CT 50 mile race. Elisabeth is a force to be reckoned with and has a bright future here on the Beast Coast.
Instagram: @Elisabeth.Faughnan
De'Vang Patel has been around the mountain a time or two. His favorite race happens to be the gnarly Manitous Revenge, a 54 mile race that runs like a 100 miler. He's also competed in the tough HURT 100 and Eastern States 100, because flat, runnable courses just don't appeal to him. De'Vang runs for Red Newt Racing and Mountain Peak Fitness, but still lends his road racing skills to the NYRR to pace the NYC marathon, which has been cancelled for this year.
He grew up playing basketball (guy has mad hops) and ran for his college's XC and track teams. Last Saturday, De'Vang and some of the other MPF/RNR crew took on the Manitous course on what would have been race day before it's cancellation. Running through thunderstorms, rocky terrain and 15,000 feet of vertical, he finished the 54 mile run in around 17 hours.
HOW DID HE DO THAT? De'Vang doesn't complain. He just gets shit done. In this episode, Ellie and De'Vang talk about hard work and how it's shaped the way he runs and trains. They talk about overcoming injuries and learning as they go. They discuss the best aid station and why the running community is the best part about racing.
Instagram: @d3vang
Fred Murolo has been around the block...over 14,000 times! He has a running streak longer than Ellie has been alive! On this BONUS epsiode, Ellie and Fred talk about his running and race history, how he has been able to streak for so long and what his favorite moments are.
There are many gems of knowledge in this episode from a true veteran. Fred is a cohost of the popular trail running podcast Cultra. He's run tons of NY races and recently ran across (diagonally) his home state of Connecticut.
Laura Kline is one of the most versatile and resilient runners in Upstate NY. Coming from a team sport background, she picked up running and triathlons after college, and quickly found success. With outright wins at the Ridge Rumble 50k, multiple second place finished at the Caumsett 50k Road Championships and impressive performances abroad (CCC anyone?) she has quite a story and outlook on training and life.
Ellie and Laura talk about strength training, fueling your body for sport, injuries, sponsorships and more!
Instagram: @ljkline
Chris Raulli is a Syracuse native ultra runner who just completed AND WON the One NY Challenge, a 1000k virtual race where participants run ACROSS NEW YORK! Runners have from May 15th to August 31st to complete this distance, but Raulli was short on time, so he did it in a bit over 2 weeks. Oh yeah, and the last weekend of the challenge put him at over 100 miles...in two days!
Chris has an extensive road and ultra resume competing for the US at the World Trail Championships in 2018 after having won the Cayuga Trails 50 miler to secure his spot. He also holds the course record at the Green Lakes Endurance Run and finished runner up at the Caumsett 50k road national championship in 2018.
In this episode, Chris and Ellie talk about HOW he ran 1000k in such short a time, the mental aspects of training, running fast on the roads and so much more!
Instagram: @craulli88
Richard Wayshner comes to the TC Interview series from Annapolis Maryland where just two weeks ago he won the Broken Ladder Challenge! Run 1 mile on day 1, 2 miles on day 2, 3 miles on day 3 and repeat until the last runner stands.
How far did he get? Just watch the interview to find out! Ellie and Richard also discuss how he came into the sport, the mental training and resilience it took to complete an ultra every day for over a week, his daily training and mindset in the pandemic and more!

Kim Levinsky has worked hard to make trail running accessible and fun for everyone.
She is the RD for Sassquad Trail Running, a running community in the tri-state area. Last year 56% of her finishers were female, all veterans and family sign-ups get a discount and most of racing revenue is donated to local charities.
This past fall, Kim completed her first 100 miler and has set numerous FKTs, both supported and unsupported. Kim works in education traveling around her area teaching kids outdoor PE. She spent years as a grad student and Division 2 softball coach at Searsburg University. She and her three female co-RDs have a mission to make EVERY TRAIL RUN A PARTY!

Jessica Marion set the Presidential Traverse FKT on September 13th...and then reset it again on September 28th after Britta Clark stole it a week later. What a time for FKTs and competition. No record is safe for long!
Jessica competed and placed 8th at the World Mountain Running Championships last year going head to head with some of the best runners in the country. She has done one 50 miler, the Vermont 50 in 2018 but keeps her legs speedy doing shorter trail races on the east coast. She came to the sport while working at a ski mountain and has history here in Ithaca at Cornell. We're hoping she comes back soon and maybe race her second 50 miler at Cayuga. Just putting it out there.
In this conversation, Jessica takes us through her running history and what it felt to get 8th at a championship race. She details working on a mountain how the outdoors drew her to trail running. We go through her FKT, the first and second one, and what she changed from the first to take the FKT back just two weeks later.

Have you ever watched a video that took your breath away? Have you ever seen a trail running film that made you get up, right then and start running? Alejandro is one of the filmmakers who make that happen. He is the artist behind the Conestoga Cowboys, a group of ragtag guys and gals down in PA who were brought together running the Conestoga Trail.
Alejandro himself is a very accomplished filmmaker; his company Reverie produces stories for the real world. Those videos that make you want to go to college, that Alejandro. Videos showing you how companies are giving back (Starbucks), that's him too. His videos capture something inside that makes us want to go do some stuff. This is reflected in his running film, though a bit more rough and much more fun.
This episode goes deep into how to film while running. Alejandro explains the beginning of the Cowboys and what his vision is. He shares stories from the trail and his experience at 100 mile races. Connect with Alejandro below!

In 2017, Rich Heffron ran five races. He won four of them. The one he didn’t, was Twisted Branch 100k, arguably the hardest 100k on the east coast. In that race, he lost to Jim Sweeny, the course record holder. In 2018, Rich was attacked by a bird and went to the hospital with injuries interrupting his racing season. He also had a baby and fully embraced the dad role. His son Jude ran his first race at the FLRC indoor track meet, when he was a year old. JWe reached out to Jude for this show, but settled for his father.
Rich has won or placed second in every trail race he’s done. Not only is he a fast runner, he’s a huge member of the running community, providing local commentary and support. Listen to him on Jay Friedman’s podcasts, listed below.

David Hedges won the 2020 Breakneck Point trail marathon in a blazing fast 4:35, a solid 45 minutes ahead of second place. He’s currently doing his graduate work at Cornell University, but grew up in Chicago and did his undergrad at Colorado College.
When David was 17, David finished 3rd at Twisted Branch in 2015. He was going into his senior year at high school and cross country just wasn’t long enough. Taking a different approach in his early running career, David was running to and from school and putting in 130 mile weeks. Coming from practicing violin for 3-4 hours a day, he assumed that in order to do something well, he should do it for the same amount of time.
He doesn’t have a 60 second elevator pitch as to why he runs, except he gets to escape and he wants to be good. Why settle for being mediocre when there is that drive to try hard?
David has continued to improve in running, but also respects his body’s limits more not than he did when he was younger. Too much racing, maybe not enough recovery, David has had his ups and downs, but the passion and drive remains. He beats to his own drum.
In this episode, David shares the highs and lows of starting early and running so much for so long. He explains the transition to more mountainous terrain and how that has been beneficial in helping shift his mindset from miles to time on feet. David talks about injuries, running at JFK and much more. Don’t miss this episode!

Kate Mingle just took second in the gnarly Catstail Marathon a few weeks ago after an up and down 2019 and then pandemic ridden 2020. Speaking of the pandemic, Kate is an engineer working towards the COVID VACCINE! That’s right, not only is she crushing miles and mountains, she’s on the ground working to fight this virus the smart way…
...with SCIENCE.
She went to undergrad at Clarkson University studying chemical engineering and then did her PhD at South Carolina. She’s from Maine but currently resides in Boston. She wanted to make a difference, and oh boy she had no idea that 2020 would provide the way.
In this episode Kate explains how to develop a vaccine and what she’s working on. She and Ellie talk about injuries and the cycle that keeps runners out for months...and coming back to appreciate the joys of running. Kate has podiumed in every race she’s entered since she began ultrarunning in 2017...except one, that elusive JFK 50.
Kate is coached by Sarah Keyes and explains what her training looks like now and whether she prefers fast courses or mountains. Ellie and Kate discuss mastering the 50k distance and what that means...or if it’s possible.
This episode will give you hope. Kate is hopeful and very optimistic about life getting back to normal. You will be able to hug your friends at the finish line! (though let’s hope that communal bowl of M&Ms never returns).

Silas Carey is ahead of the times. He and his wife moved to New Zealand three years ago, burnt out on city life. They wanted to move abroad somewhere so he could practice PT and she could teach yoga. Well, they aren't dealing with the pandemic like we are now, and just had a baby. Lucky, lucky family.
Growing up in New Delhi and running XC and track at Cortland, Silas started trail running out of college. He enjoyed the longer running involved in cross country so it seemed a natural transition. He moved to NYC after college and began road racing but struggled with injuries.
Silas decided to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy after realizing he could avoid the dreaded injury cycle with simply prehab measures and appropriate recovery.
After joining a friend in his first ultra race, a 70k, Silas got hooked into the long distances before even running a marathon. Silas has some speedy times with a 3:43 50k and a 7:51 50M at Cayuga Trails. He doesn’t feel like he has a specialty, more a pursuit of self-knowledge.
Since moving to New Zealand, Silas has experienced a different style of trail running which he explains in the episode. He also explains the posts he’s written for Mountain Peak Fitness as a Red Newt athlete. He’s written about developing strength in the lower limbs as well as race reports. Check these out below:

Aliza Lapierre was challenged to see how far she could run on maple syrup. After 30 miles, she had a new nutrition sponsor and a whole new love for the sweet sap flowing from the trees in her beloved homestate Vermont. In addition to being supported by Untapped, she also is sponsored by Salomon and Sunto, two of the biggest brands in ultrarunning. Now, anything shorter than 50 miles feels “fast”.
Aliza is very familiar with trails in Ithaca winning Finger Lakes 50s and placing 3rd at Cayuga...after running the Vermont City marathon a week earlier. She calls this period her mid-life crisis, which you’ll have to listen to hear about. Even the elites deal with separating themselves from other’s expectation and what is actually on their training plan.
In this episode Aliza goes in depth explaining her relationship with her sponsors and what it means to be on those teams. She goes way back and recounts her start in ultrarunning, back in 2004 at the Vermont 50, continuing to go back year after year as her benchmark and test of yearly fitness. She’s run Western State 6 times including giving up her spot in 2010 and 2014 when she won golden tickets because she wasn’t ready that year.
Ellie and Aliza talk sponsorships and what it means to be elite now versus 20 years ago. They talk about what drives the best runners in the sport when it’s not money. They talk entering a race to train versus entering a race expected to perform. Aliza explains why she’d enter a race when she knows she probably shouldn’t be running.
Finally, Aliza recaps her second attempt at the Long Trail FKT, which was an incredible story recapped on her blog here: https://alizalapierre.wixsite.com/alizalapierre

In 2015 Cole Crosby was running 250 laps on an indoor track. He was hoping to beat Michael Wardian’s WR time of 3:06. With 8 laps to go, he drank a cup of Gatorade from his well-meaning father. That Gatorade was the poison. With 3 miles to go, Cole lost it. He lost everything in his stomach. He lost consciousness a few times. He lost his legs. He walked the last 8 laps and finished in 3:16.43.
Along the way, he set a new marathon PR of 2:34. Casual like us Beast Coasters usually do, he’s never run a marathon PR in an actual marathon. He’s only run one marathon, after graduating from the University of Oklahoma, because all the guys were doing it.
Since then, Cole has been tearing it up on the trails in the East. His goal when he began was to make a US team. He has met that goal a few times and recently represented the US at the World Snowshoe Championships in Japan.
These ambitious training goals defined Cole’s running for years. Then a pandemic happened and he did a self-evaluation. What was he running for? Why was he doing this? How could he use his legs for good, while having adventures and pushing his body to new limits?
In this episode, Cole recounts his frequent fundraising and long runs during the pandemic. He explains what his motivations are now and the future he has planned. Ellie asks him about his three DNFs at Cayuga Trails and what finishing felt like. He shares what he’s changed in his training and how that’s improved his results.

Britta Clark is studying philosophy at Harvard. Wait, scratch that, she’s getting her Ph.D in philosophy at Harvard. Beginning with environmental science, she got a grant to go to New Zealand to get her Masters. When she was there, she enjoyed the flexibility and persistence reflected in the questions asked in her environmental ethics classes.
She’s now interested in climate change specific topics like how quickly to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, how to distribute those costs across nations and whether it’s appropriate to build things, even if they’re good for the planet, on sacred or spiritual ground.
The big question: should rights be given to inanimate objects and resources like trees, rivers and mountains?
In New Zeland, Britta was able to race in some really beautiful places like Mount Difficulty and the Kepler Challenge. The success she had early on encouraged her to continue and get better at shorter distance ultras. She’s yet to run 100 miles, and waiting till she’s ready, though admits the longer distances are easier for her. She’s never raced anything shorter than a half marathon.
In this episode, Britta explains her favorite distance, working with Coach David Roche, her affinity for Blueberry Hill B&B and her recent FKT a the Pemi Loop in NH. What compelled Britta to go for the FKT? How did she do it? Will she do it again and take it from Ben Nephew?

Needing not much of an introduction, Daven is a local Rochester and Buffalo running legend. He is an ordained minister in the Lutheran church, and manages to run 90-100 miles per week while keeping the Sabbath day holy. The Lord has blessed him that’s for sure.
He ran in high school and college, but took time off competition until he began seminary and needed an outlet. The Lord drove him towards his current passion for crushing both road and trails. He began to get back in shape, then to see how fast he could get, and then how far he could go. Let’s be clear, he won his first attempt at the distance and continues to train for at least one marathon a year as a build to something longer.
Daven has won the prestigious Oil Creek 100 3 times and came in second twice. He’s won Mendon Ponds 50k too many times to count. He’s won the Can Lakes 50M. He won Twisted Branch in 2015. This guy has a lot of experience and it shows.
In this episode, Daven and Ellie discuss training in the winter. Daven shares the challenge his wife threw down, to run every day outside in the Buffalo winter. He completed the challenge but also explains his cross-training when the outside miles wear him down.
Daven explains how much he still has to learn during his racing, despite having a solid nutrition and racing strategy that has led him to success. He controls what he can control, and then modifies out on the course. He explains “walking with purpose” something every trail runner needs to pay attention to.
Quote of the episode:
“I’ve never been able to figure out how to put my toe on a start line and not give it everything I have.”

Debbie Livingston has been running ultras for over 20 years. Her first 50 miler was the Vermont 50 in 1999, where she met her future husband after exchanging email addresses at the finish.
Livingston was 4th, in her first 50 mile race. Oh, and Nikki Kimball won that race, also her first 50. Over 124 races later, Livingston is still at it now participating in the Connecticut FKT 600 Mile Challenge.
After her initial success at ultras, there were a lot fewer races to choose from, so she made the move to head out west more often. Having that knowledge, she believes our east coast trails are just much harder. She fell in love with the gnarly trails and beauty at her home in the east, and quickly made a name for herself at the nation’s toughest trails.
Debbie went to college studying physical fitness and playing soccer. She drove into trails after college and 25 years later, her passion remains strong. Debbie race directs, coaches older athletes and youth cross country, teaches yoga and has a certification in culinary arts. She is a natural leader and her communication style empowers her to relate to the various types of students she instructs. For her, coaching and running isn’t just about running, it’s also teaching life lessons.
Doing hard work. Being uncomfortable. Believing in yourself.
In this episode, Debbie shares tales from the trail before the ultrarunning boom. She shares coaching secrets and how she got into teaching yoga. She talks about her plant based diet and why it was important to her to learn to nourish her body for performance and health.
Debbie is a wealth of knowledge and a prime example of longevity in ultra running.

Scott Parr represents everything a trail runner should be. He loves to run, loves to volunteer and would never hesitate to help someone out even if that means he has to sacrifice his race. He makes others want to run more. His attitude is infectious. He just goes out there and does the best he can.
Scott is that guy. The guy who will steal the podium if the “local elite” in the race isn’t on their A game. He’s gotten 6th at Twisted Branch, a tough 100k, the past 3 years. When he sees people show up, he knows his competition, but Scott knows his true race is with himself. He wants to run against the trail and the day itself.
Scott was a soccer player throughout high school, staying athletic into his adult years. He remained in a men’s soccer league until finding running 7 years ago. In the summer of 2013 Scott began running small 5ks. He quickly progressed on the trail scene running a 50 mile fatass at MFATML then 70 at Twisted Branch in 2017. The following year, he challenged himself to the Upstate NY Triad series running 40 miles at Many on the Genny, 50 miles at Cayuga Trails and then 70 miles at Twisted Branch. He then ran both Bandera and Black Canyon 100ks in subsequent months coming home with the 100 mile distance solidified in his mind.
Scott signed up for the second running of War Hammer in 2019 and won the race! Yes, Scott won his first 100 miler!
In this episode, Scott explains how he maintains a positive attitude (hint hint, his kids are the training stimulus). He talks about how he gets over negative thought patterns and not letting them derail him. Scott talks about his lack of training plan and how that means he never feels like he fails. The guy is mentally solid and it shows, all the time.
Scott is a mechanic at a nuclear power plant often working 12-16 hour days for months at a time. He goes hard, but then relaxes and rests hard using his time off to travel, run and spend time with family.

Katie Ghidiu won the last race from the “before” times. Before a pandemic ended running and life as we know it. Before masks were cool and 6 feet of distance meant losing a race by less than a second. She won the Last Runner Standing put on be TrailsRoc in early March...and went out with a bang finishing with a 7:00 mile after hours on a snow-packed trail.
Katie was a recruited walk-on for Notre Dame, meaning she was on the bubble of getting into the school and onto the team. She ran with a local runner some may know, Molly Huddle. She ran at nationals and went to regionals for the steeplechase. Her mile PR is a smoking fast 4:54.
In this episode, Katie walks us through the college running experience. She really enjoyed having friends and being part of a team. Her coach helped foster a healthy team environment providing a good example and encouraging good role models. She does say she felt burned out most of college and maybe overtrained for her level. The Notre Dame women really liked to hammer and no one pulled them back.
After college, Katie took a bit of time off competition and ran occasionally for a number of years. She always knew she’d be back and in 2012 she trained for and ran the Wineglass marathon in 2:58. A few more years of inconsistency followed until friends convinced her to sign up for the first running of Twisted Branch. She got third that year, in 14:40.
Katie is a librarian and in this episode she and Ellie geek out on books, their favorite authors and more. They talk Twisted Branch from a racers perspective. Katie gives the inside details on a team with Molly Huddle and what training with her was like. Finally, they discuss running and working in a pandemic. Katie was scheduled to run GDR and the Wineglass marathon but will not be competing in those, rescheduled, virtual or not.

Shan ran his first ultra in 2006, the Chicago Lakes 50M. Before that he ran his bucket list marathon and wiped his hands of that. A few years later, he ran Dean Karnazes book, Ultramarathon Man...and like many of us, that gateway drug got him. A few years after that first 50, Shan went back and won it. His first 100M, 6 months after the first 50, took him 33 hours. He again went back to that same race a few years later and it took him 19 hours.
Obviously, the longer the race, the more competitive Shan seems to be.
In 2008 Shan ran almost 200 miles for Medals for Mettle, an organization that refurbishes old racing medals and gives them to ill children for showing their toughness amidst sickness and tragedy.
This experience showed him what his body was capable of and how people can really do crazy, unbelievable things. He also discovered he loves running for charity. He looked around wondering what he could do to make something good, to inspire positive change.
Enter: the run across the country. Being at a transition point in life and always wanting to run across the country, Shan figured “if not now, when?” and the dream started to become a reality. Right now, Shan and crew chief Callie are driving across America to begin in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco CA, and ending on the shores of Connecticut.
In this episode, Ellie and Shan discuss van life, being a nomad, running high mileage and having goals. Ellie asks Shan what he is running from, where he finds a social life and his successful trajectory in ultrarunning. Shan has been in the sport for almost 20 years, and has seen many trends come and go. They discuss barefoot running and staying relevant in the sport. Shan then explains the plan for the journey which you can follow here:

Alyssa Godesky just set the supported FKT for the ADK 46er trail in 3 days, 16 hours and 16 minutes. She and Sarah were the first two women to undertake this route, beginning at 4AM on Monday August 17th. We previewed the “racing” ladies the week before the attempt, so check those two shows out! (Alyssa) (Sarah)
Though they battled thunderstorms during the attempt, they got relatively lucky with the timing and the weather was bearable.
A conservative approach in the beginning paid off and Alyssa was able to keep her energy up with little sleep and long days. In this follow up episode Ellie and Alyssa nit-pick the attempt beginning with gear and logistics, moving to the route and experience on trail and then examine how Alyssa’s body is feeling today.
What went to plan?
What didn’t pan out the way Alyssa expected?
Is there a faster route in her someday?
What is she doing now in her off-period?
All these things and more on today’s episode!

Eric Eagan was recruited to the best SUNYAC Division 3 school to run track and jump long. The first year, the man who recruited him retired and the program, who won championships for over 20 years, was under new leadership. It was this leadership who instructed Eagan to compete in the triple jump with a broken heel.
That jump destroyed him and he began the first of three injuries that shaped his running life. After each injury, he found himself out of shape and uninspired causing him to take a break from the sport.
After college, it took Eric a bit to come back to running. He spent a lot of time on East Ave in Rochester exercising his drinking muscle. He always told himself, he just needed to get back to running. Working at Nazareth college, he started dating his wife Sheila and began to run on the trails and track behind the school. He did a couple 5ks, a few halves and full marathons before making his way to trail running more full time. The Monroe county park system is very efficient and most trails are taken care of. He felt moving toward those places was natural, a pull where he felt the most comfortable.
His last injury was a four year journey of surgery, struggle, heartbreak and finally, finally some answers. Eric has been both an elite athlete and 80 pounds overweight, which in his own words, has made him see what the middle ground looks like.
In this episode Ellie and Eric discuss what being an elite male in college looks like, the typical training schedule and volume. They don’t run their easy runs at 6 minute pace everyone, so slow down.
Eric is one of the founding members of Trails Roc, a huge network of trail runners, races and trail work in Rochester. He is one of the most experienced and caring RDs on the east coast, sharing races with his co-director Sheila. He will tell you that he is nothing without her. In 2017 Eric and Sheila put on their first solo race, Many On The Genny, a 40 miler in Letchworth State Park.
Outside of running, Eric works in the Rochester school district and is a huge advocate both for student learning and funding, teachers salaries and pointing out the discrepancies between schools “not having any money” yet paying administrators six-figure salaries. He and Sheila buy their own supplies for kids and bend over backwards to make sure they do everything they can to help their students. We all have those teachers you remember from school, the ones who made an impact. Eric is one of those individuals.

Alyssa Godesky has some range in the long events. Her first ultra was the JFK 50 miler, a race she needed to run in order to get onto the US Naval Academy marathon team, which she did. She returned to JFK a few years later and got 3rd, securing her a spot in the Western States Endurance Race, her first 100 miler. She then turned to triathlon under the guidance of the legendary Hilary Biscay and quickly got her pro card.
Racing all over the world and training for triathlon did not dampen her trail running spirits, as she allowed herself one or two ultras a year. She has gone past 100 milers a handful of times, including setting the FKT in 2018 for the Vermont Long Trail in 5d2h37m, which was covered by ESPN. She coaches athletes, hosts the IronWoman podcast and continues to race professional triathlon.
In this episode, Ellie and Alyssa cover a while range of topics including the perfect push-up, running JFK, traveling all over the world for triathlon and going pro, working with Hilary Biscay, the hardest part of FKTs and much more.
On Monday, August 17th Alyssa will be racing Sarah Keyes for the Adirondack 46er FKT currently held by Ryan Atkins in 3d5h. She explains how she's trained for it, what her strategy is and whether there will be a sprint to the finish. She is raising money for The Paden Institute and Retreat for Writers of Color which fosters the development for emerging BIPOC writers by providing them the opportunity to create works of prose on the shores of Lake Champlain in New York. You can find out more on her website here.

Sarah Keyes is no stranger to the TC Interview series. Having made her first appearance in the early days of the show, we decided to have her back again. Not only has Sarah been nabbing local CRs and climbing mountains, on Monday August 17th, she will begin her longest and hardest FKT yet, the 150ish mile Adirondack 46er. The record is currently held by Ryan Atkins of OCR fame in 3 days, 5 hours and 52 minutes, set last July.
Not only will she be attempting this feat, which she has had her eye on for a long time, she will also be RACING another elite female, Alyssa Godesky to the finish. (Stay tuned for the next episode for our interview with Alyssa!)
In this episode Ellie and Sarah dive deep into Sarah's plans for this run. She has scouted the whole course, and is a bit nervous about bush-whacking through some parts. She explains how the idea to "race" Alyssa came about and whether she will sprint to the finish to beat her. Sarah talks about race nutrition and preparing both her body and mind to run for that long.
Something we all wonder, do these FKTs feel like racing? How does one stay in the game mentally, when it's not hours, but days? Does the racing mindset hold on the whole time?
Towards the later half of the episode, Sarah and Ellie discuss what her sponsorship looks like right now and whether Sarah feels a pull to remain relevant and do something worth noting. They talk about having multiple jobs to support the mountaineer lifestyle and whether it's worth it to make it work.
Sarah is sponsored by La Sportiva, Tailwind and Julbo. Find her at:

Scott Magee cancelled the biggest family reunion on the east coast. The call to drop Twisted Branch 100k nearly broke him who was ready to hold the 6th running of the event. He wonders if he could have been more creative. Could they have made the race happen?
Possibly, but it wouldn’t have been Twisted Branch. Once you run the event, you’ll understand. It’s the volunteers, the environment, the community, the course that makes this 100k special. Changing anything would undermine the spirit of the foundations of the race.
Scott the runner is someone who loves a good trail race. He has run Muddy Sneaker 10 times, that often being his only race of the year. It was his first race and he showed up in swimming trunks. Needless to say, the gear has changed but the race lives on for him. Muddy Sneaker actually runs through a section of the Twisted Branch course, which sparked Scotts interest and love for the trails in Naples, NY.
In this episode, Scott explains how he mapped out the TB100K course and how long it took. He did the race by himself the first two years, forgetting a headlamp the first year. He was motivated by the incredible views but also the responsibility to improve the trail. He speaks to the beauty of being able to hike and just keep going. Making the race happen was a combination of navigation and building trail from washed out wilderness.
Thankfully the race is very well marked, and headlamps are encouraged.
The first year, Scott felt TB was a failure. Two runners were lost and he didn’t know what to do. He took off down the trail to look for the runners, only he knew where those runners were. Luckily, they were found but Scott still felt like the event went terribly.
The next morning, Scott woke up to all runners thanking him for the best race they’d ever run. Four other people approached him to join the race directing team. He was completely baffled, but newly inspired to make the next year a success.
Well Scott, we’re glad you did!
Preferring long adventures outside to races, that will never keep him away from Muddy Sneaker and he also talks about running the Georgia Death Race and his experiences with the RD who must not be named.
Scott enjoys spending time outdoors, camping and hiking with his family.

Jeff Adams just ran 175 miles in the second edition of the Quarantine Backyard Ultra beginning on Saturday July 11th and tapping out on Monday, July 13th. He is no stranger to going the distance, and loves running for long periods of time. This past September, Jeff set the FKT on the Long Path in Upstate NY passing through the Catskills and the infamous Manitou's Revenge, a race he's done multiple times.
In this episode, Ellie and Jeff talk about coming to running later in life, trading speed for miles and the inner drive to push when no one else is watching.

Imagine this, you're at the start line of a race ready to have some fun on a beautiful sunny day. Suddenly, your worst racing nightmares have come true! You've forgotten your shoes! They simply didn't make it into your race bag, your kid borrowed them, your cat ate them. Point is, they aren't on your feet and the gun is about to go off. What would you do?
That won't stop Sophie because she does most of her warm weather running in sandals. Not a student of Born to Run, Sophie has lived a life outside of shoes beginning in Colorado and now here on the East Coast. She feels most comfortable living that barefoot life, and isn't showing it off. It's simply who she is.
Sophie Kotok just won the Cayuga Trails 50M, her FIRST 50 miler, in a pandemic no less. The day was blistering hot, masks were worn and there were no crews allowed, but that didn't deter her. Her strategy? Well, you'll have to watch this video to find out! Sophie grew up white water canoeing in Colorado but didn't find her love for trail running until about 5 years ago. She moved to Rochester, got a dog and needed some way to exercise them. Easy barefoot runs turned into her first marathon, which then became trail runs, and only trail runs.
Sophie was going to run the Twisted Branch 100k as her first attempt at the distance, but the world had other plans, so she's been adventuring and getting outside for other reasons these days.
Sophie is a Mathematics PhD student at RIT proving you just might need those calculations after high school. She talks about the broader applications, like self driving cars. Wouldn't that be amazing after a long run? You'll adore this interview with Sophie, check her out at some handles below.

Sheila Eagan is a human this planet could use more of. Not only does she teach ESL students in a poor district of Rochester, she also runs TrailsRoc and Trail Methods, two running companies in Upstate NY.
She RDs the most popular race in the world, Many on the Genny and runs the best aid station at Cayuga Trails 50, complete with Sno-Cones, hugs and all the watermelon you could want.
Sheila began running for bagels and quickly moved to trails, hills and ultras, her first being the late Virgil Crest 50 miler and most recent being her own Many on the Genny 40 miler.
Ellie and Sheila discuss hill running, teaching in a pandemic, being coached by your partner and much more!
