Join NANPA President Beth Huning and Past President Dawn Wilson, along with the Wild and Exposed crew of Jason Loftus and Ron Hayes, in a wide ranging discussion that moves from the parched vistas Death Valley, to the sublime desert landscapes and neolithic ruins of Algeria, to rafting the Colorado River, and from working with state and federal agencies to her goals for NANPA to watching tarantula migrations. This episode covers a lot of ground!
Beth Huning received a 2011 Philip Hyde Conservation Grant from the NANPA Foundation, served on NANPA’s Environment Committee and as NANPA’s Membership Chair and has been deeply involved with NANPA for years prior to becoming president earlier this year. She came to the role with 17 years’ experience working with the Fish & Wildlife Service and managing conservation projects in and around the San Francisco Bay area, including the San Francisco Bay Joint Venture. There she dealt with the conflicts between conservation and protection versus recreation and economic development. In order to get all the different agencies and organizations working together for a common goal, you have to “manage ecosystems and ego systems,” Huning says.

Colleen Miniuk didn’t follow a traditional path to photography (if there really is one). As a child, she developed a fear of water when she couldn’t see the bottom or her feet and she didn’t sleep outside in a tent until her early twenties. Shawn James talks about his first time seeing and filming an Alaskan Brown Bear. His time spent at Brook's Falls, located in Katmai National Park, and how he observed and filmed sows with cubs as well as large male brown bear catching salmon. The river was brimming with Sockeye Salmon that were swimming upstream, while the bears tried to catch their share for lunch. Shawn observed that the large male Alaskan brown bears seemed to occupy the area near the falls and the females with cubs were well below the falls to keep their distance and their cubs away from the large males.
Shawn talked about the gear that he found worked the best for photographing and filming the brown bears at Brook's falls, Katmai National Park. Highlighting the time that was able to film bears in slow-motion catching salmon...a buck-list clip for many!
Another of Shawn's brown bear highlights was being able to film a pair of cubs play-wrestling in the water.
Michael Mauro mentions the benefit of being able to access so much of Alaska by floatplane and the incredible vistas and aerial photography gained from those perspectives.
Shawn James also enjoyed seeing and photographing the many cabins that he discovered on his first trip to "the last frontier".
The Wild and Exposed Team also discussed with Shawn, the challenges that they and he constantly face when trying to capture both professional still photographs and professional video on the same trip. Seward Sea Otter photo expedition turns into Humpback Bubble Net Feeding photo shoot.
The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is a marine mammal native to the coasts of the northern and eastern North Pacific Ocean. Unlike most marine mammals, the sea otter's primary form of insulation is an exceptionally thick coat of fur, the densest in the animal kingdom.
Bubble-net feeding is a unique and complex feeding behavior engaged in by humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). It is one of the few surface feeding behaviors that humpback whales are known to engage in. This type of feeding is often done in groups. Whales can also perform a similar method of surface feeding called lunge feeding but is done solo.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve boasts 123 miles of coast along Cook Inlet between Chinitna and Tuxedni bays. Located west of the Kenai Peninsula, the Lake Clark coast is famous for spectacular scenery, birds rookeries, and bear viewing in the lush salt marshes at Chinitna Bay and Silver Salmon Creek.
