Shelley Treacher, BACP Accredited Psychotherapist, gives "short, inspirational gems of wisdom". Shelley helps you to regain your confidence, reclaim love, and get back control of your eating. This podcast is about ditching bad habits, from comfort eating to toxic relationships, while finding your own inner strength; your 'underground' confidence.
We all have a moment when we want to give in, and cave to temptation.
Whether it's reaching for food, sending the text, scrolling, avoiding something difficult, or falling back into an old pattern, that moment can feel impossible to resist and unbearable.
But recovery isn't about never feeling discomfort. It's about learning the skill of staying with yourself through it.
In this episode, I explore why we give in, what happens in our nervous system in those moments, and how somatic therapy can help you build the capacity to tolerate discomfort without immediately escaping it.
If you've ever thought, "I know what I should do... but I can't" this episode is for you.
You'll learn:
Whether you're struggling with emotional eating, anxiety, relationship patterns, or other compulsive behaviours, learning to stay with yourself in difficult moments can change everything.

Why does it feel so hard to stop eating, even if you understand what’s happening?
In this episode, I explore what’s really going on in those moments where overeating feels automatic or inevitable. This isn’t just about willpower or discipline. It’s about a shift in your nervous system, and how your body tries to regulate something underneath the surface.
I also share a personal example of how this can show up in real time, and how noticing that shift can begin to change your relationship with it.
If this meant something to you, you might also find my other episodes on emotional eating, anxiety, and nervous system regulation helpful.
Just notice your own patterns this week. There’s nothing to fix. Just notice.

Grief is often associated with sadness or bereavement. But it doesn’t always show up that way.
In this episode, I explore grief from a somatic perspective and how it lives in the nervous system, not just the mind. You might experience grief as exhaustion, heaviness, brain fog, or a loss of motivation, without realising that grief is what’s underneath.
We look at why grief can feel so physical, how it affects your ability to function, and why it often goes unrecognised when it doesn’t fit the usual idea of mourning.
This episode may help you understand your experience differently and bring a little more compassion to what your body is going through.
If this meant something to you, you might also find it helpful to explore my episodes on emotional eating, nervous system regulation, and relationships, where these patterns are often closely connected.

Cravings aren’t weakness. They’re chemistry.
In this episode, I explain what a craving actually is, how urges form through the brain’s reward system, and what genuinely weakens them over time. Not through force. Not through guilt. But through nervous system learning and awareness.
This podcast explores emotional eating, stress addiction, unhealthy relationship patterns, and nervous system regulation.
If you listened to my recent episode on addiction and willpower, this builds on that conversation. Understanding cravings changes how you respond to unhealthy compulsions or addiction.

In this episode, we explore dopamine, stress, cravings, the return of natural joy, and why recovery isn’t about willpower.
Last time, we explored why insight on its own doesn’t create change. This time, we go deeper.
If you understand your pattern but still find yourself going back - to food, scrolling, overwork, alcohol, a person - this episode explains why.
Addiction and compulsion aren’t about weakness.
They’re about stress, wiring, and reinforcement.
In this episode I talk about:
I also share personally about my long relationship with caffeine. Not as a moral battle, but as a shift from denial to informed choice.
Recovery isn’t about denying pleasure.
It’s about not denying reality.
When you understand what the behaviour gives you, and what it quietly costs, something shifts. that’s where real change begins.

A lot of people feel they understand what’s going on for them… but are frustrated that still nothing actually changes.
In this episode, I explore why insight on its own often isn’t enough, especially when the nervous system is already overwhelmed, shut down, or under strain.
January can intensify this pattern. Fatigue, illness, social pressure, comparison, grief, financial stress, and lack of light all place extra demands on the system. At the very moment we’re most depleted, we’re encouraged to push harder, get disciplined, and overhaul our lives.
That approach often backfires.
In this podcast, I talk about:
I also guide a couple of short self-reflection pauses, not to “fix” anything, but to shift attention out of analysis and into awareness.
If change feels hard right now, this episode offers a different way of understanding what’s happening. One that’s kinder, more realistic, and more effective.

Nurturing yourself through the pressures of Christmas. Part of the reason we eat so much at Christmas is that it's so easy to do it. Our whole culture makes it easy for us to do so. However, there are many traditions and habits associated with Christmas that can create pressure and obligations. One way to control your eating during Christmas is to politely decline food that you don't really want.
This is the second of my Christmas podcasts, where I talk about the pressures of Christmas, and guide you through the challenges of festive eating. I also share personal experiences and emphasise the importance of making conscious choices to take care of yourself during this time.

In this candid discussion, I share my findings on post-relationship addiction, an issue that has a surprising number of people in its grip. Drawn from my own experiences and the experiences of others, I've developed 10 practical strategies designed to help you break free from this addictive cycle.
We take a hard look at how to recognise and understand your addictive responses, shift your perspective to focus on personal needs and self-worth, and foster internal comfort instead of relying on external validation or distractions.
As we move forward, we tackle the difficult path of emotional recovery, rebuilding relationships, and reigniting interest in other activities. This journey requires courage - staying with discomfort, acknowledging that your feelings were real, and facing the fear of being alone. I provide insights into self-soothing and self-regulation techniques, along with a list of non-harmful strategies that can be your go-to when you need some self-comfort.
Whether you're dealing with the end of a relationship or battling food addiction, these insights are designed to assist you on your path towards recovery. So strap in, and let's navigate this challenging terrain together.

Are you wondering if that charming, gift-giving individual in your life is actually a narcissist in disguise? Here, I peel back the layers of subtle narcissism, providing you with the tools to spot the warning signs and understand the behaviours often exhibited by narcissists. I even share my personal journey of dating someone with narcissistic tendencies, demonstrating how these traits can manifest in day-to-day situations.
Our discussion doesn't stop at the overt signs; we also delve into the subtler traits of covert narcissists who display anger, condescension, and outright dishonesty to uphold their perceived superiority. Through my professional insights, you'll learn how these individuals often use flattery and deceit, including feigning disinterest in sex, to elevate themselves. In addition, we'll explore how their poor sense of humour and the intuitive feeling that something is off can be potential red flags. So, gear up for an enlightening chat that will empower you to navigate relationships with potential narcissists.

Gabor Maté says that we choose belonging 100% of the time, over authenticity.
Our self-critic keeps us ‘in check’ and ‘likeable’.
The part of us that feels criticised, ‘different’, or struggles to connect, is the part that turns to something outside ourselves, in order to cope. So, here, I talk about the road to becoming more authentic and empowered, as a route to recovery of confidence, as well as from compulsion or codependency.

Feeling like you'll be found out is common ground for people who comfort eat.
Many of us imagine others to be better than us, think others have a perfect life, and feel we are frauds waiting to be discovered. But the reality is that most of us feel inadequate. Most of us think that someone else could do better. It's this feeling that can lead to comfort eating or addiction.
Here, I talk about how this comes from a belief about not being good enough, whether from your past or from society. I encourage you to be realistic about your limitations and strengths, and to let others be impressed by you.

Today, I carry on talking about how you can get control back of yr eating. Overwhelm can rapidly contribute to losing control of eating. So, here, I talk about how to take back control of feeling overwhelmed.
One listener says:
“I want to learn how to recover for real, and for good. I can stay on a plan for a couple of months, and then my emotions overwhelm me and I cave to the comfort of overeating”
Can you relate to this? If so, you might need to understand more about overwhelm. Listen to my podcast to find out what it is, how it contributes to overeating, and how to regain control.

Today, I end the year with a round-up of some of the main themes I’ve talked about this year. I talk about how to understand your comfort eating, and how to recover from it, so that you are prepared for the post Christmas desire to get healthier.
I get a lot of enquiries in January, so I know that many people will be facing how to deal with comfort eating. This summary will point you towards where you need to start, in my podcast. You have a lot of helpful support and information here about the things that lead to feeling out of control with food, and how to tackle them.
This podcast also comes with a handout. You can find today's handout, here.

One reason for overeating at Christmas is that we need to let go. Understanding that you might be comfort eating to let go, is, as I often say, treating the cause rather than the symptom of overeating. Productivity can be another addiction, that typically goes hand in hand with comfort eating.
So, today, I talk about Christmas overeating and how to recognise and wind down from being over productive. Because so many of us feel we need to push through, when really we need to stop.

There's a lot more behind boredom than you might initially realise. So this is what I'm asking you to think about today.

Since lockdown began, the jokes about overeating have been coming thick and fast on social media. Having overcome chronic comfort eating myself, I help people to stop. But I must admit, even I’ve struggled more than usual during the pandemic.
It may be that you’ve tried every diet or technique on the planet and still can’t stop yourself from eating. You may have become so frustrated and sick of yourself that you’re desperate for another solution.
That solution is to treat the cause of overeating, rather than the symptom.
You may realise that it’s emotional discomfort that causes your comfort eating. Or, you might be baffled by how your overeating habits or binge-eating could be caused by emotion. Maybe you’re thinking:
“it’s just a habit” or, ‘’I Just like food!”
But, you want to change things. So, it’s time to go a little deeper.
The first step towards treating yourself better is to identify whether it is emotion causing you to eat. So, here are some ways to find out.

I talk a lot about love and compassion in these podcasts. But, being in an abusive situation is a time to learn compassion for yourself, and not for the abuser. It can be difficult to know if you're in an abusive relationship, so here are some signs and signals to quantify. If you can tick most of these boxes, it's time to learn how to look after yourself.
You may also wish to start asking: Do you abuse yourself with food?

It’s clear that grief is one of the greater challenges for so many of us, during the pandemic.
There have been many losses. From the everyday losses in our lives and livelihood, to the shocking loss and often horrific death of loved ones, related or unrelated to the pandemic.
The difficult thing about grief is thatIn our stiff upper lip patriarchal society culture (at least in the UK), we don’t talk about grief. We don’t know how to. But loss is a part of each of our lives. So, here I talk you through some ways to cope and to understand grief and loss.

We’ve been challenged like never before in being alone or with the same people every day. But, we need other people, to feel OK in everyday life, and to heal.
During Covid-19, we may have become very self-reliant, and we may have shut down to some extent, at the same time as craving good contact and connection.
It would be natural to be struggling and awkward with social contact now. It’s possible that some of us have developed social anxietyafter being isolated from others for so long. As such, we may have a natural inclination to stay indoors.
In this podcast, I'll talk about how you can understand this, and start to recover.

As we find ourselves recovering from COVID-19, we may still be coming to terms with the impact the virus has had, on both our bodies and minds. None of us has escaped its effects. When we first went into lockdown, many of us were anxious and felt lonely. Those first few weeks were all about calming our nervous systems down from fight or flight. We responded to a very real threat by going into survival mode. But where are we now?
In this podcast, I talk about how the pandemic may have affected our nervous systems, the effect of vicarious trauma, and the triggering you may have experienced.
Any of these experiences may lead to comfort eating, or using substances to regulate how we feel.

"Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place"
This week, I talk about how you can address low self-worth on a deeper level. It’s often the case that when we start talking about how bad we feel about ourselves, that sooner or later, we're going to remember that this started a long time ago. Here, I will show you how to start to address this underlying reason for binge and emotional eating, with compassion.

How you feel, and what you believe about yourself is such an important subject. Because, it’s how you feel about yourself that determines whether you treat yourself well, or give up on yourself. Overeating is often caused by feelings of frustration with yourself, and the belief that you are unloveable or unworthy. So, it can help tremendously, to learn to change these core beliefs.
Here, I take you through some practical steps to change a low self-worth mindset, and the beliefs that you don't matter, or don't belong.

“I'm stupid,” “Nobody cares about me,” or “I'm bad at this”
We have thoughts like these every day.
Self-worth is the most common thing talked about in therapy. We all grapple with it.
Often, what you’re dealing with here is the core belief that “I'm not good enough” or “I don’t belong.” We all have these beliefs and thoughts.
There are lots of reasons for this. So, here I'll introduce you to what self-worth is, and how a lack of self-worth occurs. Understanding this is such an important part of recovery from comfort eating or depression.

Today’s podcast follows on from last week’s podcast about embodiment. Today, I lead you through an embodiment experience.
The point of becoming more embodied is to notice how and when we cheat ourselves of being kind to ourselves.
Areas of our body and brain work together to decide how to respond to any situation.
Most of this happens unconsciously, especially with comfort eating. Embodiment will help you get to know your system from the inside, so that you can have some conscious control over that.

The kind of relationship you have with yourself determines whether you give up binge-eating. Because, the habit is really all about how you treat yourself.
What is self-compassion? To be able to answer this question, I believe we need to explore your relationship with yourself. We need to look at what compassion is not, first.

We all worry, especially now. Some worry is necessary for addressing what matters to us. Like anger, worry helps us to avert danger or discomfort. But, like anger, we aren't usually taught how to cope with worry. So, worry can be another major reason why you might overeat or binge-eat.
The overeater's main worry is often about how you look. Learn to replace fear and avoidance with curiosity and compassion.

We all want a happy life, with a fit body and good relationships. In January, we usually take an inventory of our lives and decide to cut out what’s harmful. As you know, this rarely lasts. But it’s even harder to maintain this year because we still need comfort collectively, as well as individually.
So, here are my realistic resolution suggestions, and new habits that you can practice, now that we’ve got the new year out of the way, and old habits are returning.
Here, I revisit some basics of how to overcome emotional overeating.
Don’t give up hope just yet!
