The Burning Word

Many of us struggle when it comes to reading our Bibles.

Whether from boredom, disinterest, or just plain distraction, our attempts to crack open our Bibles and hope for answers has fallen short over and over again. We want to know God. We really do. But reading our Bibles often feels more like an obligation than an opportunity to encounter the Living God.

Yet as one surveys the scriptures, over and over, the word of God was not information to understand, or doctrines to believe. The word of God was and still is an invitation to encounter. Like Moses who sees a bush burning with flames that wouldn’t go out. Like Jeremiah who feels the burning in his chest, of a word that he must speak. Like the disciples with Jesus on the road to Emmaus, who reflected, “Were not our hearts burning within us as he opened up the Scriptures to us?”
