We may not host international parties, but how can we convey the heart of Christ by the hospitality we offer others?

Sometimes, we feel as though we are just another face in the crowd. It is easy to feel like it wouldn't make a difference if you showed up or if you didn't. But, there is power in a name. Zacchaeus was a face in a crowd of people straining to see Jesus. But, when Jesus called him by name, he became more than a face. He became worthy.

Everyone experiences a daily interaction between internal thoughts and the words we choose to speak. Although sometimes we use our words carefully, other times we can be quite careless. James tells us that with our tongue we are capable of blessing or cursing others. How important in the overall picture are the words we choose to share?

We understand God on a cognitive level, and feel like we've made real progress when we're able to believe things we can't see or explain. Yet James states that even people who don't follow Jesus believe in him. What sets Christians apart is when our faith leads to action. Without action, we run the risk of being all talk. The bad in the world can easily cloud our idea of what the world is like. Yes, there is darkness, evil and ugly, and it's appropriate to condemn the bad and mourn the suffering. But there is also so much good. God is able to redeem the bad to bring good. Just like the centurion, we can experience awe as we observe God's love for us.

In Jesus's time, shepherds were rarely included. But God chose to reveal the birth of the Savior of the world to these outsiders -- a group of people with whom Jesus would feel at home his entire ministry!

We can live in three different places when it comes to finding peace with God: the natural person, under the rules, and under God's love. Four ways to attack back on anxiety include: getting professional help, finding a friend, marinating in worship, and fighting back with Scripture. God commanded that a temple be built in Jerusalem where Jews could worship. Because the temple was the dwelling place of God, the place God chose to bear his name and house his presence on earth, it was the focal point of Jewish worship and culture. This is the temple where Jesus worshiped and taught. What can we learn from the design of the temple and what took place there has profound impact on our lives today.

Often it is easier to tear down than to build up. Pointing out problems doesn't take much imagination, offering solutions does. God chose to work most powerfully through a person that went from hunting Christians to starting churches. Being a critic is easy, becoming a champion bears more fruit.

It is an equal pursuit. What will we do with that pursuit? Will we act like we don’t need it or will we fall down in adoration and worship and give ourselves over to it?

When Abraham was 75 God asked him to uproot his family, leave what was familiar, and go to a place promised to him and his descendants, when he didn't even have kids. Fellowship is more easily experienced than explained. It is sharing joys and sorrows. It is celebrating successes and being quiet in disappointment – together. The hard to explain but easy to experience fellowship is the thing that keeps you coming back to your small group. It’s what makes you, after a hard day's work, feel pulled to go to your small group when every logical impulse would say to stay home and sit on the couch. The breaking of bread together is a common way for us to experience feeling connected to each other. For in the moment we are eating together we are connected through the shared experience of a meal.

Many things in our culture are becoming more polarizing than ever before: from politics or practice of religion to parenting or pro sports. Sheep are definitely cute and provide some cozy warm wool, but they would rarely be described as smart animals. The thing about sheep is they need to be led. There are lots of competing voices vying for our attention, voices that beckon us to follow. Jesus showed us that his voice is the only one worthy to obey, and that we should follow his example.

A perennial effect is of "existing for a long or apparently infinite time." It can have the effect of consistently generating new fruit, giving the perception of a perpetual yield. Similary, in following Christ's lead to give, the Spirit can perennially reach generations for Christ to transform the world.

Ceasing is STOPPING. Some see Sabbath as a luxury, not a necessity. When we think that way, it can bring up feelings of guilt. Yet It is written into the rhythm of creation to practice Sabbath. How can we begin to add this spiritual discipline to our weekly pattern of life?

Sometimes we get stuck in a mindset of bringing only our "fair share" (or 50%) to our most significant relationships. If we get stuck in that pattern of behavior, we may find ourselves becoming more distant if one of the two isn't capable of bringing their 50%. Enemies armed with swords countered Nehemiah during his mission. We face opposition in our own lives: it can come in the form of gossip, mixed motives, apathy—our “swords” can look very different today, but are no less dangerous. When somebody has a life-changing event, and they begin to forge a new path, there are people who will come along and distract or pull them away.
Enemies armed with swords countered Nehemiah during his mission. We face opposition in our own lives: it can come in the form of gossip, mixed motives, apathy—our “swords” can look very different today, but are no less dangerous. When somebody has a life-changing event, and they begin to forge a new path, there are people who will come along and distract or pull them away.
