Wayne Bridegroom grew up on a farm milking cows in Central California and ended up as a Baptist pastor in Modesto where he experiences working with Laotian, Hmong, Cambodian, and Hispanic, peoples starting and pastoring churches in each of these nationalities as well as working with the African American churches -- all in the humble town of Modesto. In 2014, Wayne was awarded the Martin Luther King Legacy Award for his contribution to the African American community — the first time the award was given to a white person.

Gary Flory, 67, was saved in May of 1981, while watching the 700 Club. He worked at WCVO Christian Station in Columbus, Ohio from 1984-1989 where he co-hosted a show called the Final Flight Christian Rock Show. He’s still hosting Final Flight Radio on Mixcloud on internet radio. Gary is also co-Pastor of Chapel of Rest in Columbus. Gary is married for 43 years to Mary Flory and they have two children.

Dr. Fischer founded Living Word Bible College in Southern California in 1971. Lambert Dolphin received an AB degree with high honors in physics and distinction in mathematics from San Diego State University in June 1954. After two years of graduate study in Physics and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, (1954-1956), he joined the staff of SRI International (formerly Stanford Research Institute), in Menlo Park, California where he remained almost continuously for the next 30 years. He left his position at SRI as a Senior Research Physicist in 1987 to pursue small-scale independent geophysical consulting services, and to devote the bulk of his time to Bible teaching, writing and Christian counseling.

Os Guinness is an author and social critic. Great-great-great grandson of Arthur Guinness, the Dublin brewer, he was born in China in World War II where his parents were medical missionaries. A witness to the climax of the Chinese revolution in 1949, he was expelled with many other foreigners in 1951 and returned to Europe where he was educated in England. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of London and his D.Phil in the social sciences from Oriel College, Oxford. Os has written or edited more than thirty books. In this conversation, we will be discussing his latest book, The Magna Carta of Humanity: Sinai's Revolutionary Faith and the Future of Freedom.

Wayne Bridegroom grew up on a farm milking cows in Central California and ended up as a Baptist pastor in Modesto where he experiences working with Laotian, Hmong, Cambodian, and Hispanic, peoples starting and pastoring churches in each of these nationalities as well as working with the African American churches -- all in the humble town of Modesto. In 2014, Wayne was awarded the Martin Luther King Legacy Award for his contribution to the African American community — the first time the award was given to a white person.
George Barna is a professor at Arizona Christian University and leads the Cultural Research Center based at the university. His focus at ACU is worldview assessment and development, as well as cultural evaluation and transformation. He was the founder and leader of both The Barna Group (which he sold in 2009) and the American Culture and Faith Institute (which closed in 2018). Through those entities he has conducted groundbreaking research on worldview, cultural transformation, ministry applications, spiritual development, and politics. In addition to providing research and strategy for several hundred parachurch ministries, thousands of Christian churches, the U.S. military, and numerous for-profit and non-profit organizations, he has conducted polls and provided strategy input to four presidential candidates. Barna has written more than 50 books, mostly addressing cultural and religious trends, leadership, spiritual development, church dynamics, and cultural transformation. He has sold more books based on survey research related to matters of faith than any author in American history.

Susan Burton is a leader in the criminal justice reform movement, founder of A New Way of Life, and outspoken voice to end mass incarceration. Following the tragic accidental death of her five-year-old son, Susan’s world collapsed. Her loss snapped the final tether of resilience burdened by a past of pain and trauma. She descended into an emotional abyss of darkness and despair, but living in South Los Angeles, Susan didn’t have access to the resources she needed to heal. Without support, she turned to drugs and alcohol, which led to nearly 20 years revolving in and out of prison.
Drawing on her personal experiences, she founded A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL) in 1998, dedicating her life to helping other women break the cycle of incarceration. ANWOL provides resources such as housing, case management, employment, legal services, leadership development and community organizing on behalf of, and with, people who struggle to rebuild their lives after incarceration.
Harold M. Best is Emeritus Dean of the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. He is also a past president of the National Association of Schools of Music. He is the author of numerous articles on the relationship of Christianity to the fine arts, worship, issues in arts education, culture, and curriculum. His book Music Through the Eyes of Faith was published by Harper San Francisco in 1993. Unceasing Worship: Biblical Perspectives on Worship and the Arts was released by InterVarsity Press in 2003. She served as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in Dallas from 2014 until 2019. In June of 2019, she left the Defender's office to go into private practice. Our guest on BlogTalkRadio tonight was born into an alcoholic family with a speech impediment that terrorized him in school making him the brunt of jokes and ending up in sexual abuse at the hands of an eighth grade bully. Later he would turn to drugs and alcohol to medicate himself before getting saved and working in and around the church, though never really helped by the church. He served in many different ministry-oriented capacities (published a Christian newspaper in Indianapolis, served as Director of Communications for an international mission organization, founded his own communications company where he helped fund many faith-based organizations, served in a ministry to equip pastors and church leaders to minister effectively to the sexually broken and a ministry to prisoners) all the while still struggling with his own past, his inability to forgive himself and continuing addictions. Now, ten years sober, Greg talks about how A.A. is his “church.”

Prior to coming to Vanguard, Dr. Park was senior lecturer in theology at Biola University and an academic consultant for the John Templeton Foundation. He has published a number of academic pieces on theological ethics, interfaith dialogue, and secularization theory. His latest book is Constructing Civility: The Human Good in Christian and Islamic Political Theologies which is due out in the Fall of 2017 through the University of Notre Dame Press. Dr. Park obtained his D.Phil. in theology from the University of Oxford, and completed two masters degrees (education and philosophy) at Biola University, along with a Bachelor’s in history at the University of California, Berkeley. A prize-winning historian and Emmy Award nominee, Randall Balmer earned the Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1985 and taught as Professor of American Religious History at Columbia University for twenty-seven years. In 2015 he was named to the John Phillips Chair in Religion, the oldest endowed professorship at Dartmouth. In 2014, he was named the inaugural director of the Society of Fellows at Dartmouth. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton, Yale, Northwestern, and Emory universities and in the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He was a visiting professor at Yale Divinity School from 2004 to 2008.

Mike Boland has a company in California called Boland Communications that is a specialty manufacturer of precision and color-accurate video displays for the Television and Film Production industries. He currently freelances as one of the leaders of a network of churches in the city of Irvine trying to impact the city for Christ. He is married to Britta and they have three children, Ellen (15), Klara (13), and Lukas (10).
Doug Gilbert was a Catholic missionary priest in Liberia, West Africa. He worked with the Society of African Missions (SMA) and was the pastor of a church in Pipeline, an outlying area of the capital Monrovia. Doug ministered during the Liberian civil war, and worked with a group of Catholic nuns who ran a hospital for children who were wounded in the war.
Today, Doug is back in the States, is laicized (no longer an active Catholic priest) and married with a son. His day job is now information technology. However, he continues his missionary work through a ministry of songwriting and repairing old stringed instruments to give to homeless musicians.
Doug is a pastor and leader of pastors. We are happy to welcome him back on the Catch for a discussion on the radical nature of the words of Jesus. Doug is currently transitional pastor of a church in the Kansas City area. He has coached ministry leaders from a wide diversity of denominational and cultural backgrounds over the past 20 years. A significant focus has been on transformational leadership and conflict resolution.
Don Williams is a native Californian. He graduated from Princeton University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and holds the PhD from Columbia University. He served on the staff of the Hollywood Presbyterian Church for 10 years as college pastor and was heavily involved in the Jesus Movement in the late 1960's. He has been Adjunct Professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary and lecturer in religion at Claremont MacKenna College. He also pastored the Mt. Soledad Presbyterian Church in La Jolla, CA., and planted the Coast Vineyard in La Jolla, California in 1988. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including 12 Steps with Jesus and Start Here: Kingdom Essentials for Christians. He also serves on the Board of Christian Healing Ministries, led by Francis and Judith MacNutt. Don is married to Kathryn. They now live in Los Angeles, CA.
At Laguna Presbyterian since 1972, Rev. Dr. Jerry Tankersley received his B.A. from Westmont College, followed by a B.D. from Fuller Theological Seminary. He went on to obtain a Th.M. from Princeton Theological Seminary, followed by a Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate School. He also received a Doctorate of Ministry from the School of Theology Claremont. Jerry was ordained by the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1963. Jerry will be retiring in June from 46 years of ministry at Laguna Presbyterian.

Glenn Kaiser has been singing the blues - and sometimes soul, R&B or rock - since he was twelve years old.
Growing up in a poor family living hand-to-mouth in central Wisconsin, Glenn eventually gravitated to Milwaukee’s local music scene where he fronted over a dozen bands, as well as writing and performing solo acoustic music, all before turning nineteen years of age. With his adolescence plagued by drug and alcohol abuse, Glenn got clean through following Jesus after a life-changing spiritual confrontation right around his eighteenth birthday. During this time his music got heavier and in many ways, deeper. His former song writing motif of celebrating drugs, sex and other vices gave way to lyrics about spiritual struggles: personal temptation, institutional sin, poverty, exploitation, racism, materialism and other issues that few musicians seemed willing to tackle.
Now after more than three decades of making original music, Kaiser is known for his raw, bluesy vocals, firey guitar playing, bottleneck slide and harmonica work on thirty recordings and innumerable live shows. Glenn and his family have lived in Chicago’s inner city for over thirty years doing mission work with people who live as he once did.
Kaiser has released several acoustic-based cds in between his electric blues and blues/rock albums. His seminal delta blues projects “Trimmed and Burnin’” and follow-up “Slow Burn” (both with harp-player/singer Darrell Mansfield) established him as a singular and authentic christian bluesman. Three contemporary worship albums along with the folk-pop “Time Will Tell”, fill out the acoustic discography. Acoustic cuts also comprise half of Kaiser’s critically acclaimed “Ripley County Blues” project recorded in a log cabin lodge in rural Missouri.

As Advocacy Chair for Women of Vision, Bobbi Dauderman led the WOV California delegation on Capitol Hill to advocate for the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act and served on a national task force on advocacy strategy for Women of Vision. Additionally, she has volunteered for the past 18 years at the Shalimar Learning Center where she tutors young children at risk. She currently is advocating for the Water for the World Act and the Girls Count Act, which will allow girls greater access to education, health and social services, as well as the ability to vote, work and own property. Bobbi received the “More Priceless Than Diamonds” Award presented by Vanguard University’s Global Center for Women and Justice (GCWJ).
Since the summer before graduating high school Russell has written and performed music as well as championed, managed, promoted and produced events, artists and causes that inspired him.

He has arranged and produced albums for many gifted artists, among them Kathleen Battle, Ernie Ford, Hale & Wilder, Jerome Hines, Burl Ives, Ken Medema, Christopher Parkening, George Beverly Shea, Joni Eareckson Tada, Ethel Waters, Anne Martindale Williams, Christopher Adkins and many others.
In 1992 Kaiser was awarded a special Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for his contributions to the Christian music industry. He received an Honorary Doctor of Sacred Music degree from Trinity College in Illinois and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Baylor University. Kurt received the Hines Sims Award and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The Faithfulness in Service Award was presented to him in 2003.
David Horner has taught at the University of Oxford, Denver Seminary, and served as a Visiting Scholar and Research Associate at the University of Colorado. He has lectured in numerous classrooms and university forums nationally and in Europe, and he has written numerous articles and book chapters on ethics, apologetics and ancient and medieval philosophy. Horner serves as Research Scholar for Centers for Christian Study, International, an effort to develop intellectual Christian communities within secular university contexts. He also serves as Executive Director of The Illuminatio Project, whose aim is to bring the light of a classical biblical vision of goodness, truth and beauty into the thinking of the church and culture through strategic research and communication.
After more than 20 years cycling in and out of the criminal justice system, unable to find work, housing or addiction-recovery treatment, Susan mercifully gained freedom and sobriety in 1997 and made it her life’s work to help other women walking in her shoes. She began by meeting women released from prison as they stepped off the prison bus, welcoming them into her home, and urging them to stay as long as necessary to put their lives back together. Susan quickly recognized that her individual efforts were not enough. She saw that women coming home from prison faced tremendous institutional barriers: rules, laws, policies and attitudes that operated to deny them access to employment, student loans, permanent housing, public assistance and many other services. Susan came to understand that real change could only happen through a powerful, grassroots community organizing effort, one that could amass enough political power to bring an end to discriminatory practices, and shift public attitudes in a way that would break the cycle of mass incarceration… and A New Way of Life Re-Entry Project was born.

Os Guinness is an author and social critic. Great-great grandson of Arthur Guinness, the Dublin brewer, he was born in China in World War II where both his parents and grandparents were medical missionaries – his grandfather having had the privilege of treating the Empress Dowager, the Last Emperor and the Imperial family. A survivor of the terrible Henan famine of 1943, in which five million died in three months, including his two brothers, Os was a witness to the climax of the Chinese revolution in 1949 and the beginning of the reign of terror under Mao Tse Tung. He was expelled with many other foreigners in 1951 and returned to Europe where he was educated in England. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of London and his D.Phil in the social sciences from Oriel College, Oxford.

His primary ministry includes being the leader of The Good Steward Project, a spiritual and social support group for Christian’s ages 20 to mid 30’s who are in the marketplace and want to have an impact for The Kingdom. Don Williams is a native Californian. He graduated from Princeton University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and holds the PhD from Columbia University. He served on the staff of the Hollywood Presbyterian Church for 10 years as college pastor and was heavily involved in the Jesus Movement in the late 1960's. He has been Adjunct Professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary and lecturer in religion at Claremont MacKenna College. He also pastored the Mt. Soledad Presbyterian Church in La Jolla, CA., and planted the Coast Vineyard in La Jolla, California in 1988. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including 12 Steps with Jesus and Start Here: Kingdom Essentials for Christians. He also serves on the Board of Christian Healing Ministries, led by Francis and Judith MacNutt. Don is married to Kathryn. They now live in Los Angeles, CA.

Glenn Kaiser has been singing the blues - and sometimes soul, R&B or rock - since he was twelve years old.
Growing up in a poor family living hand-to-mouth in central Wisconsin, Glenn eventually gravitated to Milwaukee’s local music scene where he fronted over a dozen bands, as well as writing and performing solo acoustic music, all before turning nineteen years of age. With his adolescence plagued by drug and alcohol abuse, Glenn got clean through following Jesus after a life-changing spiritual confrontation right around his eighteenth birthday. During this time his music got heavier and in many ways, deeper. His former song writing motif of celebrating drugs, sex and other vices gave way to lyrics about spiritual struggles: personal temptation, institutional sin, poverty, exploitation, racism, materialism and other issues that few musicians seemed willing to tackle.
Now after more than three decades of making original music, Kaiser is known for his raw, bluesy vocals, firey guitar playing, bottleneck slide and harmonica work on thirty recordings and innumerable live shows. Glenn and his family have lived in Chicago’s inner city for over thirty years doing mission work with people who live as he once did.
Kaiser has released several acoustic-based cds in between his electric blues and blues/rock albums. His seminal delta blues projects “Trimmed and Burnin’” and follow-up “Slow Burn” (both with harp-player/singer Darrell Mansfield) established him as a singular and authentic christian bluesman. Three contemporary worship albums along with the folk-pop “Time Will Tell”, fill out the acoustic discography. Acoustic cuts also comprise half of Kaiser’s critically acclaimed “Ripley County Blues” project recorded in a log cabin lodge in rural Missouri.

This month, the nation of Rwanda remembered the genocide that occurred 21 years April. It was a horrible atrocity that ravaged this tiny African nation. Yet, in the aftermath, stories of hope began to emerge.
Enric Sifa was one of those stories. Orphaned in Rwanda, Enric survived years on the streets of Kigali as a young child until he was found and sponsored by an organization called Africa New Life. Being one who enjoyed music, he was then gifted with a guitar. Only knowing a few chords, Enric wrote a song and entered a nationwide competition.
He won.
Now Enric is married and finishing up his college degree. He travels around singing songs and talking to people about his story.

Ralph and Sherrie Buffa have lived for almost 45 years in a house they designed and built in the redwoods off of Skyline Blvd. south of San Francisco. When Marti and John got married, they rented a tiny one bedroom cabin probably 200 yards from the Buffa’s as the crow flies, but you would have to have been a crow to go that way because of the steep terrain that made you have to take the long and winding road to get there. Ralph and Sherrie had just become Christians when the four of them met so when John and Marti each started their own discipleship groups, Sherrie joined Marti’s group and Ralph joined John’s. They both studied the New Covenant passage out of 2 Corinthians and will be talking together with John and Marti about how that first study has affected their lives ever since.

The story of Randy Stonehill coming to Los Angeles in 1970 to apply for the job of “rock star” but finding Jesus instead has been told and retold innumerable times – often by Randy himself in songs like “Norman’s Kitchen”. His friendship with Larry Norman throughout the ‘70s has been celebrated in tunes and liner notes and more recently examined in the documentary film Fallen Angel. The contribution of this singer & songwriter over these forty some years has been substantial – in first pioneering popular rock music with a Christian point of view and later demonstrating a consistency in holding to the faith through the trials and tribulations of ordinary life.
Randy was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1985 for his duet with Amy Grant and in 1988 CCM Magazine acclaimed his 1976 album Welcome to Paradise as among the top three most influential albums in the contemporary Christian genre.

Os Guinness is an author and social critic. Great-great grandson of Arthur Guinness, the Dublin brewer, he was born in China in World War II where both his parents and grandparents were medical missionaries – his grandfather having had the privilege of treating the Empress Dowager, the Last Emperor and the Imperial family. A survivor of the terrible Henan famine of 1943, in which five million died in three months, including his two brothers, Os was a witness to the climax of the Chinese revolution in 1949 and the beginning of the reign of terror under Mao Tse Tung. He was expelled with many other foreigners in 1951 and returned to Europe where he was educated in England. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of London and his D.Phil in the social sciences from Oriel College, Oxford.
Os has written or edited thirty books on a wide range of themes, including The American Hour, Time for Truth, The Call, Invitation to the Classics, Long Journey Home, Unspeakable, and A Case for Civility. His latest book is A Free People’s Suicide: Sustainable Freedom and the American Future, published by InterVarsity Press in August, 2012.

Mallonee, (pronounced MAL-O-KNEE) the lyrical and musical source behind the late Vigilantes of Love, started playing music in Athens in the late 80's. Mallonee learned guitar quickly and the post-punk-pop of the La's, XTC, Joy Division, the Clash and Echo and the Bunnymen. Great college scene bands that passed through Athens, Georgia during that time were Athen's own R.E.M., the dbs (with the great Chris Stamey and Peter Hosapple), Mitch Easter's 'Let's Active. These were also big influences. Each of those bands proudly wove indebtedness to the first "British Invasion" into their musical flags.

Singer/songwriter Enric Sifa grew up in Rwanda and lived through the Rwandan Genocide. After losing his parents at the age of nine, Sifa lived on the streets struggling daily for food, shelter, and suffering from loneliness and abuse. To combat loneliness, he sang his mother’s songs and brought comfort to many other street kids. He became known on the streets for his extraordinary talent.
In 2002, Sifa met American business people Tony and Serena Morones who were working to develop Africa New Life Ministries. They helped him get off the street, attend school and gave him a guitar.
Soon after in 2004, he won a national singing competition that put him on Rwandan radio and TV. Sifa speaks and performs in Rwanda and the US, advocating for marginalized children. Many of Sifa’s songs are popular on Rwandan radio and he has released three albums in the United States. He now attends college in Portland, Oregon and hopes to pursue a career in conflict resolution and human rights advocacy.

To set them apart, GameChurch added their own gamer Bible to the swag list. “The Bible is the Gospel of John with commentaries from gaming culture in it”, says Bridges. To date GameChurch has given out more than 35,000 of these Bibles.
