  • The importance of hiring the right people

This special episode will feature a masterclass recording from Podcast University where I talk to Matt McWilliams about affiliate marketing

If you’ve spent any time in the information marketing world you’ve likely seen one of the people you’ve followed promote someone else’s product launch. There’s a good chance that Matt has had a hand in that affiliate launch.

Matt is an affiliate manger for launches by experts like Michael Hyatt, Jeff Goins, Ray Edwards, Lewis Howes, Brain Tracy… and many more.

He’s the person the big names trust to run the affiliate launches and I’ve brought him here to discuss how you as a podcaster can have success as an affiliate.

"I want to interview other entrepreneurs" ....or speakers, ....or experts, ....or _____ (fill in a topic area).

This is most peoples approach to creating content for their podcast.

At best this approach is short sighted.... at worst pure laziness.

Yes interview podcasts are popular. And yes you SHOULD consider having them in your episode line up.

But to only focus on interviews is doing your audience, your podcast, and yourself a disservice.

To get the most out of your podcast there are four types of podcast episodes that I believe make for a great podcast line up.

On this episode, I'll dive into what each of those four episode types are and why you'd want to consider using them in your show.

That applies to any business whether you're a restaurant, real estate agent, or an author.

In this episode of the podcast, I sit down to talk with Amber Swenor, founder of Strategic Partners Marketing and Amberdella Consulting.

Amber knows that an effective marketing strategy is built upon a brand foundation, taking into account why your business exists, for whom and the promise that you make to that audience. A brand is more than colors and logos. It’s how people feel about your business.

It's now the final day of the 5 Day Get Started Podcasting Challenge!

Before we get to the final challenge, however, I just wanted to say thanks! First, to everyone who followed along with this challenge, especially those who pushed hard through those fears that popped up when recording an episode for the first time.

Imagine the people you may be able to help or provide service to. Don't ever let that fear stop you from potentially helping them, because remember - a successful business is one that serves!

Whether you finished your recording or not end of this challenge, it doesn't really matter to be honest. What matters is this:

You are taking action!

That's more than what 99% of the people who only dream to start something like this someday can say.

I'm getting a little off tangent here, and I know you're anxious for day 5's instructions, but I just had to share this because it's so important!

As you probably can tell, at lot of this "business stuff" is definitely related to what's happening in the mind. Mindset is everything, because without the right mindset, your'e not going to give yourself the full energy you need to succeed.

You're on your way though, you've been doing great these past few days, so let me stop rambling here, and get to it.

We're now into Day 4 of our 5 Day Get Started Podcasting Challenge!

If you've been following along, you now have a selected your equipment, built a solid foundation for your podcast business, and discovered how you can stand out from the crowd.

Now it's time for an exciting (and sometimes nerve racking) moment.... recording your first episode!

One of the greatest things about podcasting is... there are NO RULES.

You can design your show any way you want, you want a 60 second interview show...great. If you want a 4 hour solo episode...awesome. As long as it’s entertaining and useful to your audience people will listen.

One of the worst things about podcasting is... there are NO RULES. The freedom and possibilities can be paralyzing to many people.

To help overcome that resistance and give you a little direction in terms of how to script out your solo episodes I wanted to offer two script templates that you can use as a jumping off platform. Of course, feel free to toss the templates and find the flow that fits your show.

Also, when recording your very first episode there are three key items you want to cover. The reason is that the first episode will be one of your most listened to episodes. It doesn’t matter if people join you on episode 25, 100, or 700 a certain percentage will jump all the way back to the beginning to listen to that very first episode to find out about you and the podcast.

Now it's time to get to work and hit that record button!!

We're now into Day 3 of our 5 Day Get Started Podcasting Challenge!

Great work!

You now have a selected your equipment and built a solid foundation for your podcast business.

Now it's time to talk about getting your podcast to stand out!

You won't get listeners if your branding and visuals don't speak to your ideal audience.

iTunes is by far the largest podcast directory. This is where people go to find new podcasts to listen to (even if they use a different player they are likely still connected through iTunes).

iTunes (and other directories) are essentially search engines for podcasts.

In order to stand out to the right potential listeners you need to do three things Get Found, Get Listeners, and Get Fans. Day three of the Podcasting Challenge will help you do just that.

In this training video you'll discover the key areas you need to focus on in order to be sure your podcast is discovered, listened and subscribed to.

Have you set up your recording studio yet?

This episode of the podcast we will dive into the best year options for your budget and style you want to record. This episode is from Day 2 of the 5 Day Get Started Podcasting Challenge that I am releasing here on the podcast to everyone.

Last week's episode, you were told to build your foundation for your podcast business.

In the Power Of Podcasting Facebook Group, dozens of you reported that you were able to plan a solid foundation for your show! If you aren't in the Facebook group already, I highly recommend you check it out. It's a great resource for not only inspiration and to see that this is actually a process that works, but to get some help and encouragement too. Honestly, I'm blown away from how involved many of you are in helping others in there. Thank you for that!

Now it’s time to move on to one of the questions I’m asked the most, "What gear do I need?"

I'm going to keep it simple for you though, as always, and before I get to the instructions for today and continue the challenge, there's one important note I want to make about how many of you probably felt during Day 1 of this challenge...

When I asked you to spend time answering your foundational questions, I knew that this was going to be one of the hardest parts of the process, because too often we want to skip ahead to the sexier pieces (like gear).

Immediately, I started getting questions about how specific the answers needed to be, if they could wait to answer the questions, or if they could even skip questions all together.

These are completely normal feelings to have. But the urge to breeze past these questions is one you need to suppress. These questions are important to creating a solid foundation that will help you grow more and faster down the road. Sometimes to go fast you need to first go slow.

So if you missed finishing Day 1, go back and be sure to answer all the Foundational Questions.

In this training video I’ve broken the decision down for you into the 6 main components you need to consider and then gave you my recommended equipment for each combination. There’s no need to get too involved in equipment reviews, spending days researching which exact microphone to buy. That is just a fancy way of procrastinating. Make your selection and move forward.

You can always upgrade or purchase additional equipment as you learn more about your specific podcasting needs but those are things you won’t know until you start recording episodes. So make an equipment selection and start recording.

This episode of the podcast is a special one.

Recently, I ran a 5 Day Get Started Podcasting Challenge. We had some excellent results. So I wanted to release it here on the podcast.

The entire goal of this challenge is to help you through the beginning stages of creating a podcast.

Your podcast can become one of the most important assets in your business. Yes, it can eventually help you sell your products and goods, but most important, it'll allow you to instantly build a relationship with real people who have given you the signal that they are interested in you and what you have to say.

Your podcast audience can help you learn what pieces of content to create, what products to build, frustrations they are having, success stories they've had because of you, and much more.

To sum it all up, your subscribers can help you take the guesswork out of the work you're doing to build your brand, blog and business.

Before we dive in, I'd like to say one more thing:

This isn't going to be the most sexy, mind-blowing process you have even seen, because it shouldn't be. When starting anything, the trick to get moving is to start simple. This process is very simple, and I promise you that it works if you take the time to actually implement it.

We need to start by building a solid foundation. That’s where it all begins. With a solid foundation you’ll be able to grow faster with more confidence that you are taking the right actions. You may see the instructions below and be tempted to write it off because it seems so simple, but I want to challenge you to push past that resistance in this challenge.

Let's get started...

If you're looking to start out this new year with a brand new podcast, you’ll want to start off by laying a strong foundation to build your brand. To get the results that you want, you need to start by asking yourself the right questions to focus in on your ultimate goals.

In every initial on-boarding call with s new client, we here at Your Podcast Guru like to start with five major questions to help sort out how a podcast can help you to attract the right people, repel the wrong people, and get those audience members to become dedicated clients and customers down the line.

To really grow your business with podcasting, you’ll need to ask yourself these five questions:

  1. What is the overall objective and how does your podcast help you grow your business?
  2. Who is your ideal audience?
  3. What podcast, or podcasts, are currently catering to your audience right now?
  4. How will you differentiate yourself?
  5. How do you show that you're different and communicate that to your audience?

When you’re starting your own podcast, there’s a few key, foundational tools needed to really reach your audience and expand your business. In this section, we’ll discuss the major gear needed to start producing your very own podcast starting with selecting the right microphone for your needs.

In this episode, I’ll be sharing the pros and cons of five microphone with different price points and varying audio quality to help you find the microphone that best suits your needs.

The first microphone can be found in your standard Apple headphones. If you don’t have a microphone and you don’t have a budget, this is the tool to get you started in producing content and getting your name out there. Remember that you can always upgrade later, but this can help move you in the right direction.

The second microphone is the relatively cheap and portable Roland R-05 digital recorder. This is the microphone that I use to record most of my podcasts. It can be used as a straight digital recorder or as a field recorder. If you’re looking to get the feel of the surrounding environment in a podcast, this device picks up background noise.

The third microphone is the Rode Smartlav Lavalier microphone, a hands-free option ideal for video recordings. In fact, this is the mic that I use in most of the videos in my Podcasting for Profits course. With the Rode Smart app, this microphone can plug in to your iPhone or your computer with no problem and its reasonably priced at around $70.

The fourth microphone is the ATR 2100, my recommended starting microphone for anyone looking to get into audio podcasting. At $60-$80, the ATR 2100 is a great value giving you a 7/10 on sound quality. This microphone has both USB and XLR plugs which allows you to grow into using a mixer as your podcasting needs change. This is another hands-free microphone giving you the freedom to look at notes while recording

The fifth microphone is the HeilPR40, the choice of many professional podcasters for optimized sound quality. This mic will run you about $650-$700, but if you’re looking for a nice, big, and bold sound then this is the one for you. This microphone has the added benefit of including a boom arm, shock mat, and a pap filter (all of which we’ll talk about in a later episode).

Consider your needs and resources to determine which microphone is right for you at this very moment, buy it, and start practicing. Even if you aren’t ready to start recording, you need to get comfortable with speaking into a microphone so you’ll be ready to rock and roll once you start your podcast.

When you’re the founder of a business or an organization, it can be challenging to find the time to send a consistent message to your audience while creating new content. Join host Nick Palkowski as he interviews keynote speaker, lifestyle coach, entrepreneur, and host of the DREAM. THINK. DO. podcast, Mitch Matthews, on how podcasting has helped him to reach a wider audience and allowed him to specialize in what he does best: creating content.

Long before podcasting, Mitch was finding ways to manage the different prongs of his core business: speaking, one-on-one training, and online training. As a creative, time management was a challenge. Time blocking has allowed Mitch to seek out and connect with people who have complementary skill sets so he can foster some stability in his schedule.

After his time on a local radio show, Mitch realized that he wanted more. He was bumping up against the boundaries of his business and needed to reach a larger audience with his message of helping people dream bigger and achieve their goals.

As a dreamer and a business owner, he started to realize that he couldn't master everything and turned to Your Podcast Guru to help him provide a consistent message to a wider audience. With Nick and his team taking care of the details, Mitch can focus on creating content and he shares his top three strategies for how he creates his dive-deep episodes:

  1. He borrows from the past
  2. Dialogue with audience
  3. Just show up

By creating bold content that reflected who he is as a person, Mitch figured out who was and who was not his audience base. Don’t be afraid of ticking people off if they don’t like you anyways.

After just three months of starting his DREAM. THINK. DO. podcast, Mitch went from 300 downloads a month to 30,000 downloads. The return wasn't instantaneous, but it was absolutely worth it. Stick with podcasting and see the returns on your investment increase tenfold over just a few months!

After speaking at an event, I get a lot of questions from the audience about how to start their own podcasts. After the more technological questions, the most frequently asked question is this: how do I create content for my podcast?

A lot of people hesitate about putting their message out in the world. They fear that they aren't experts. Get over that fear right now. It's not not about knowing everything there is to know about your subject. Being an expert is not about having all of the answers.

If you are further along in your journey than your audience and you can help them to avoid the mistakes that you made, then you have knowledge that your audience doesn't. You are an expert.

[Tweet ""You are an expert. It's time to share your message with the world." @NickPalkowski"]

To start building your well of content, you can begin with one of the exercises that I share with all of my Your Podcast Guru clients. Start with listing your top 10 most frequent asked questions. Next, come up with 10 questions that your audience should be asking but they aren’t.

Don't forget that your first episode will be one of the most listened to episodes (no pressure!). You’ll want to tell your story, let the audience know what you’re about, and, most importantly, what they should expect from you. From there, you will want to focus on adding consistent value to the podcast.

Join host Nick Palkowski as he interviews international success coach, keynote speaker, and international bestselling author, Hal Elrod on building a personal brand and growing your audience.

Starting with Cutco Cutlery at the age of nineteen, Hal surpassed sales records within days of joining the company. After losing his first business in the Great Recession, Hal created a morning ritual which helped him to take himself and his results to the next level which eventually became the basis for his bestselling book, The Miracle Morning.

“It's our duty to share our story, our struggle, our strategies with people…to help them overcome what's holding them back.” @HalElrod

Although Hal began his business with a lot of one-on-one coaching, he is now focusing on expanding his core business strategy by transitioning into more horizontal streams of income. Learn how Hal managed to grow his business by focusing on the scaleability of each of his projects and see the importance of diversifying your streams of income (7:18). Additionally, Hal offers his top three tips for establishing and growing your personal brand (21:20).

Two words: the funnel.

Wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, the funnel is the perfect model to grow your business and find your customer base. The more audience members you add to the top, the more people who trickle down the funnel and become dedicated, valuable customers.

At the top of the funnel is your free content. This is where podcasts can be phenomenal tools to help attract audience members who can anonymously consume your content while they decide if they like what you have to offer. Next is the free email subscription. While the audience member isn't a paying client yet, they are more valuable to you now than ever before

Start with a low-priced offer for a product, such as an ebook. This helps you to find your niche and to target potential repeat buyers. From here, you’ll want to move into low-priced subscriptions with a recurring monthly fee to help stabilize your income.

Further down the funnel lies the medium priced product. For me, this is my Podcast for Profit program. With some initial hard work and dedication, the product becomes scalable over time and provides a solid income base. Next comes the high priced product which typically involves one-on-one courses and in person events. These take time and effort, but the investment pays off.

Last, and certainly not least, there's the high priced subscription. This includes mastermind groups where members pay a monthly fee to have access to your expertise. An example for me is my podcasting service where I provide a high value at a high price point.

What does your funnel look like? Text powerofpodcasting to 33444 to get a cheat sheet that will guide you in planning your funnel and empowering your business. Stay tuned for next episode for our first case study!
