How do SEL and robotics work together? When you think of robotics, the words "scripted" and "predictable" come to mind, but Robert Walker knows that in the real world, things are often unscripted and unpredictable - even in fields that may seem otherwise. Robert put his students in real-world situations and gave them projects that develop SEL and character, preparing them for adult life in the workforce. Recently retired, Robert has written one book, Quad D Robotics Innovative Inventions Curriculum, and is working on his second.

Who are the 5 people closest to you? Who are the people closest to your students?

I think we’ve got to be conscious of the culture you are setting in your classroom and the way you live your life. You can surround yourself with people who have a crab mentality. When one crab tries to escape the barrel the rest pull her back down for many different reasons.

Other people are surrounded by folks with a shark mentality. Did you know a shark can’t swim backward? In fact, if it stopped moving forward it would die. I know that’s extreme but that’s how important the people you surround your self with are.

Let me rephrase the first question. Who are the top 5 quality people in your life? Does your list change?

A flashback to episode 20 of the dash podcast Failing got me started with James Turner of I got Rehabs.

This episode served as inspiration for chapter one of the newly released book Every Decision Counts: 8 lesson's I wish they taught me in school.

Let’s be real: in life you lose a whole lot more than you win. Michael Jordan shot 50%, a hall of fame baseball player bats .300. Do your students know how to fail forward?

In Chapter 11: Failing Got Me Started, students will learn that life is like a pendulum. Like a grandfather clock, the pendulum is what makes it tick and tock. You can’t have one without the other.

On one end you experience joy, love, success, and happiness; on the other end is heartbreak, pain, and sadness. You can’t have one without the other.

To help scholars connect with this idea that failing is what gets you moving in the right direction, they’ll answer questions like: Has there been a time that you’ve learned from failing? How can you turn failure into motivation to succeed? Can you think of three times that failure helped you learn?

Finally, the chapter closes with three ways to turn failure into a learning opportunity.

The purpose of this book is to equip our young adults with the self-awareness, principles, and skills they need to turn every obstacle into a platform for opportunity.

EDC can be read as a class study as social and emotional learning lessons, or it individually.

I see a lot of teachers that are afraid to be afraid of who they are because they are worried that they don’t fit the cookie cutter idea of a master teacher and when a principal comes into the classroom, instead of being authentic they jump to try and conform to whatever the evaluation instrument says. And there’s a way to do both.”

Robyn Jackson started Mindsteps, Inc, a company that helps schools transform their school culture from the top down with the ultimate goal of helping teachers realize how they can all help every student succeed. ‘When you see someone living their dream you either want to be a part of it, or start living your own’. Melanie Shavers started off having trouble finding a good safe place for after school care.

That idea turned into a middle school that serves student’s stem needs in rural North Carolina. The cool thing is that the school focuses on problem based learning.

At the end of each year, educator’s get an idea of what students are interested in so that during the next school year they can work on an Inter grade team to come up with a real-world solution.

You can’t say our children are the future and not invest in educators. The uncomfortable conversations, people don’t want to have them. There’s an elephant in the room and everybody keeps walking around it but the elephant isn’t getting any smaller.

It makes a difference when a student comes to school and see’s someone look like them as their Guidance counselor, social studies teachers. The pay is at one level, but the expectation of our teacher’s is much higher.

We have to rethink the way we treat our teacher’s if we truly want to invest in our kids.

Restorative justice means recognizing the harm that our students have experienced and working to repair it. But students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

When school start’s we are so eager to begin instruction when we have to take the time to build relationships with students.

We have to find a way for our students who learn differently, walk different and talk different to succeed in our school system. Restorative justice is a great place to start.

Having a sense of humor and relationship with the kids is key to middle schools. The middle ages are an opportunity to take a kid in a tough place and develop them before they grow a fixed mindset.

There are tons of protocols, systems, and standards but when the teacher cares about the student and the lesson is engaging. Everybody wins.

We have a problem with students coming to school and staying engaged. There’s a disconnect between what students are being exposed to and what they need to know to be productive citizens.

The Path to graduation, Early college high school Initiative began in 2002 with the funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. And they continue to fund this project today.

I was surprised to learn the initiative started as a way to provide Underprivileged students an opportunity to get ahead. Today these ECHS programs are all around the country allowing students to graduate high school with an Associates degree!

I was so ready to be the champ and travel the world as a renowned champion. Only I lost! So, focused on gaining fame, that I forgot to add value. After that defeat a new hunger started in my stomach. “Growing up I didn’t have many black people to look up too, I found myself in situations where I didn’t see people that looked like me. So, when I found that I stuck with it. Be the person you needed when you were younger. Representation matters.” Be the person you needed when you were younger. It’s hard being in a world where people don’t like you, talk like you, or do what you do. It’s like there’s always something missing, representation matters. Privilege is opportunity, you can’t decide where to start but when you see someone living their dream you either want to be a part of that. Or go get your own.
