The MultiPod explores the ideas and profiles of the world’s first community of dedicated multipotentialites, the Puttyverse. Multipotentialites (a.k.a “multipods”) have diverse interests, skills, and creative outlets – making us capable of success in just about anything. Our cultures and global economy today demand creativity and flexibility, and more people are creating purposeful lives from the intersections of various pursuits. Join us and share in the amazing journeys of our Puttyverse members.
Our podcast miniseries comes to an end, with some reflection on the Everything Conference experience, takeaways, calls to action and next steps.
With all the business and routine of getting back to every day life, the Everything Conference may feel like a mirage, a fantasy. Did that really happen? Did I dream it? Or in truth, did it just go by too fast and I didn't take the time to appreciate it?
I think I can honestly say that not only have these worries not come true, I feel like we're all actively ensuring that the ETC 2024 is still alive and well. Message threads remain active, online and real life events and get-togethers are being planned, and projects are being discussed, all in that wave of momentum and enthusiasm. I review the various conversations of this series, each with distinct angles and perspectives on both the ETC weekend, and multipotentiality in general. My thanks to the friends who sat down with me, either in person or virtually, to share their thoughts: Thomas Beutel, Christine Lozada, Rachel Blanford, Joel Zaslofsky, Alyson Wagner, Heather Ussery-Knight, Tomoko Ito, Lindsay Gordon and Ned Andrew Solomon.
There are so many other people I want to talk to, and many I couldn't get into this miniseries. So let's keep that momentum going, podcast-style. Like Alyson said, the door is always open, and let's not dwell on our standardized perception of "time." You could be listening to this 6 months from now or beyond, but if you want to share your story here on The MultiPod, please don't hesitate to reach out, if I haven't done so already! There have been numerous "calls to action" in this series, so I think it's best to recall and highlight them here, all at once. 1. Go out there and meet people, nothing compares to meeting folks in person 2. Reach out to the guests here, follow and support them, as well as all the members of our extended community 3. Join the Puttyverse! It is such a positive and resourceful community for multipotentialites 4. Visit Minneapolis-Saint Paul: I hope after this series you have a sense of what the metro area is like, and how much there is to see and do 5. Send me your feedback on this miniseries, and The MultiPod in general: what else would you like to hear? What topics, themes or advice would be interesting and useful going forward? 6. Start a podcast! Especially a short-form podcast, which may either rejuvenate your love for the medium, or get you started and on your way to years of enjoyment. Don't forget to review the 3-part miniseries on "How to Start a Podcast" that I did with Christine. 7. How can I help you with your podcasting:

This brings to an end our miniseries, The MultiPod @ the Everything Conference, but you will undoubtedly see more episodes coming up before long with some familiar names and voices. They'll likely slot back into the regular episode feed. My goal was to bring all of us along to the Everything Conference, particularly those who weren't able to make it. But I've realized just as much in putting this miniseries together that it also brings me back to that magical weekend, something I'm very thankful for. And I hope for those of us who were there, you're feeling the same. Our initial ETC series comes to a conclusion with a conversation with the one and only Ned Andrew Solomon, whose life is a wonderful example to multipotentialites, and who was a delightful addition to the Everything Conference. Ned came with his wife Gina Lynette, a familiar friend to those of us in the Puttyverse and/or at the first ETC. It was an easy ask to get Ned Andrew to come along to this year's conference. Once we get past some initial existentialist comparison regarding our names, we quickly get into Ned's winding path of interest jobs, make-ends-meet jobs, and ultimately a great Einstein job that gave the family stability and security, while allowing him time and resources to pursue interests like writing and visual art, but his greatest passion is music. Something we both share. This conversation alone was fun to geek out on some of our favourite recording artists and inspirations, including a few from Canada, and if you're a fan of folk rock, jazz rock, prog rock and more, you'll be hooked right in, just like a great Walter Becker/Donald Fagen chord progression. We cover: * What brought Ned from New York City to Nashville, via Baltimore, and the many twists along the way * The idea of how although multipotentialites have many interests and even passions, often there's one or two that stand out and stick throughout our lives * The music scene in Nashville, and whether local audiences prefer to hear original material or good cover bands * Meeting so many intelligent, creative and welcoming people at the ETC
Tips include: * Advice for getting back into old passions, and picking up where you left off * Finding motivation and purpose in the face of tremendous, life-changing obstacles * Looking at your life to realize you're a multipotentialite too
No matter what he was doing or where life has taken him, including with his recent diagnosis of vascular dementia, Ned has always come back to the music. He's a gifted songwriter and guitarist, but he had to completely reteach himself guitar just over the past year or so. It's hard to imagine the shock and frustration of not being able to remember lyrics, chord shapes or fingering, things you've done your whole life. Fortunately, Ned and Gina found a surprising solution that's got him back on track, playing writing and even recording, and we share some of his music here in this episode. Little did I know that just a couple weeks before the Everything Conference, Lindsay Gordon herself was in Montreal for a visit, just up the road from my little town. So our conversation today launches straight into the French language, the experience of English speakers when visiting (particularly the different experience between Americans and English Canadians when in Montreal), and how the French in Québec is different from that in France. And Lindsay in fact spent a year in Belgium way back when, who have their own dialectical differences. That was just the prelude to our conversation. I do a quick run down of Lindsay's various experiences, jobs and projects, going by the fabulous multipotentialite-friendly About page on her website. This starts about 9 minutes in, if you want to bookmark it. Let's just say, it's all over the place, and it's amazing. So what happens when someone like Lindsay, who is grudgingly accustomed to deflecting and explaining her life choices to those who love to critique, gets to an Everything Conference, surrounded by people with a similar life story? You don't have to explain. Just be. We cover: * Whether Lindsay's career coaching business is marketed towards multipotentialites, or if they simply gravitate her way * We're at a solid, running theme now of folks finding a second wind for those interests and projects they had set aside, or even forgotten about, but which now feel reenergized thanks to this weekend * Publishing a book, or a short-form podcast, and how that gives you an anchor for your brand and identity for years * The thought that Las Vegas, Lindsay's adopted home town, might just be a perfect place for multipotentialites, and a place we should consider for a future group meetup
Tips include: * How to integrate two completely unrelated interests into one business, or at least a regular schedule * Creative ideas on promoting a major project, in Lindsay's case her book, to stand out and have fun simultaneously * Learning what's "Right for You" and making decisions that bring us happiness, fulfillment and a healthy work life balance
To celebrate the book launch in 2022, Lindsay came up with the idea of doing a YouTube live stream, telethon-style, where people could actually call in with special pledges, the milestones of which would be celebrated by a change of outfits. It's original and hilarious, and veterans of the first Everything Conference, the first Camp Indie, and many other similar events will recognize a familiar face in the background! I crossed paths with Tomoko Ito at the Everything Conference, but not as much as I had hoped to, so The MultiPod comes to the rescue again with a chance to follow up with each other and record a conversation. Tomoko is now back home in the LA area, where she maintains strong connections to her native Japan. I wasn't aware that she is a business coach for Japanese multipotentialites, which raised some interesting questions and curiosity about how multipotentiality is viewed and understood in Japan, if there are strong cultural differences between Japan and North America, at least, and how people adapt over there. Tomoko is very well-placed to observe the contrasts on either side of the Pacific ocean, and we dove right into it (after another quick shout out to the brag bags and their lasting impact). We cover: * Is there as much pressure in Japan as anywhere else to specialize and commit to that one career * How we each pursue our multiple interests, and the fact that it doesn't always have to be for money * Poetry and baking as a couple activities Tomoko's pursued in the last little while, regardless of there being any money involved in it * Toying with an idea for a YouTube channel that does virtual tours of the world, via Google Maps, Streetview etc. If you caught Episode 3 of this series where I showed some of the neighbourhoods and highlights of Minneapolis and St Paul, you'll get an idea of what it would be like
Tips include: * Considering the side-hustle approach to gain anything from extra income to skills and experience * Letting go of the pressure to make money from your interests can be a tremendous release, if it makes sense to do so * The benefits of the Offers & Needs exchange, which remains something available to all, not just those who were there at the in-person networking session * Setting yourself up for success, but equally only starting a project from a place of fun and enjoyment
On the subject of Offers & Needs, as I said to Tomoko, if it's something you'd like to organize for your own community or network, I'm happy to help give you some direction and overview as to how it works. I've known Heather U-K for over 7 years, she predates me in the Puttyverse by about a year and a half. She's been on the podcast a couple times, we cross paths in huddles and online Offers & Needs Markets, and various groups and discussions. In fact, we've "known" each other so long that it almost felt like we had already met! But of course, this was another one of those goosebump moments: seeing Heather herself walk in, right there in front of me. She's taller than I expected! Heather and I hung out a bit over the course of the weekend, attended a couple workshops together, I showed her over to a fabulous secret coffee shop on Friday before it closed for the weekend (she bought me a latte, cheers). She was there at pickleball and at the delightful Persian restaurant around the corner from the Mac that Joel introduced us all to. That place almost became a second home by Sunday night. We decided to wait to record something from back home, another example of making the most of our time in the moment and be present with the people around us. Plus some time to reflect on the weekend and our thoughts therein. We cover: * How the ETC has helped us reconnect with past interests * Getting back into routines and injecting new life into old projects * The importance of meeting in person for building stronger relationships * The experience of meeting online first and then maintaining the connection in person, and how that changes a relationship
Tips include: * How to recognize the right level of trust with someone, in a particular moment * Telling and retelling the story of the ETC to those we see in person, which keeps the experience alive * How the Everything Conference is helping to break down barriers to momentum and recognize the projects we want to prioritize
On the outside, it may seem like all those deep connections came together very quickly. But Heather and I reflect on how there's a progression over time towards having deeper conversations. Each relationship has its own levels of trust and comfort, but I think there's also a loving degree of joy and empathy amongst us too. Our series switches now a bit to the post-ETC reality: back home, back to regular routines and just trying to preserve as much of that wonderful spirit as possible. On the plus side, the audio experience will be much better... I was a little disappointed with the quality of the lavalier lapel mics I bought before the conference, they sounded far more muffled and dampened than they should have. Tech and equipment can be a little hit and miss sometimes, but we can just keep testing and learning for the future. My thanks again to Jeff Long for his help and expertise with the audio repair. Alyson Wagner has been a member of the Puttyverse, but someone I haven't crossed paths with very much, whether digitally or in person. We made a point though to connect after the conference on The MultiPod, and reflect on the shared experience. Alyson was at the first ETC, and is well-positioned to talk about basking in the warm energy afterwards through texts and notes, and trying to hold onto the momentum and energy after returning home. There are a number of folks she has kept in touch with over the past 5 years, while carrying on with regular responsibilities and routines, not knowing if they would ever meet in person again. But you have to express a willingness to keep in touch with people met at conferences, and let go of that pressure to communicate frequently. We cover: * How being at the 2nd ETC felt like a "reverse family reunion," seeing old friends again in person * Absorbing so much energy and socializing, and then going back to your room later to thoughtfully process it all * How physical keepsakes and handwritten notes also go a long way to maintaining connection * Contrasting the conference experience with everyday life, normal "Chronos time" vs. "Kairos time," where time slows down and has a different perception
Tips include: * The importance of simply keeping doors open to staying in touch * Alyson's suggestion of creating a scrapbook for the notes she received * Keeping up with people online and their activities, and actively showing them support * Embracing the momentum of ideas and enthusiasm for projects, both new and old
One great way to keep up with Alyson and what she's up to is her newsletter, Snail Steps, which shares practices for slowing down and creating meaning in life. Alyson helps you find intentional moments to pause and reflect, and encourage others in this practice too. Today is Sunday, August 4th. The Everything Conference has just come to an end.
Or, has it?
Yes, we are heading home, or on to our next destination, tomorrow. But in this episode of reflection, post-ETC, I sit down in a quiet corner of the University of Minnesota campus, around 10 o'clock at night, crickets chirping and a gentle breeze blowing past, to start the process of reflection.
One can only comprehend so much, so quickly, after an intense and emotional weekend such as this. But that in turn may be a reason why the Everything Conference spirit will continue in earnest, even though we will no longer be together physically.
Our challenge is to maintain this momentum and connection, and I think the podcast can play a role in helping us achieve that.
But first, enjoy the ambience and quiet calmness of this final evening; a last, live, spontaneous capture of the moment.
There will already be lots more to come: interviews and conversations recorded on-site, ambient sounds and quirky features of Minneapolis, and undoubtedly follow-up recordings over the days ahead, all of which to be shared with you here, on The MultiPod.
Thanks for joining me, and joining us. Believe me when I say, you have been there in spirit.
We'll be publishing episodes of the miniseries on our new MultiPod YouTube channel, for quick and easy access, followed over time by rolling them out in the various podcast apps. For now, make sure you follow our new channel to not miss those daily updates.

Today is Wednesday, July 31st, and the Everything Conference starts tomorrow!
In fact, there are a number of folks already in town, probably hanging out for dinner at this exact moment at Malcolm Yards near the university... hi guys! I'll see you tomorrow!
Today is also a good opportunity and timing to give everyone following along a lay of the land, a visual overview of where exactly we'll be, where the various sites and activities are located, and how they relate to each other.
So I've fired up Google Maps, turned on screen share, and am giving you a quick tour of the city. If you're listening to this episode on audio, I do recommend that, at least for this one, you pop over to the YouTube version so you can really see where things are.
Don't worry though, there will still be lots of audio-only content, i.e. vivid descriptions and ambient sounds, coming up over the next few days.
I show you how to get around the city on the Metro system, which is remarkably affordable: only $5 for an unlimited day pass, $4 on weekends. I'll be taking the bus and metro all over, that's for sure.
And I show you where the social activities for each evening are located, the ones we know about so far. There will be more to come!
But grab 15 minutes to follow along here and get a sense of where we'll be throughout the weekend. Then, when we're chatting to you from the front lawn of the McNamara (or more likely enjoying the A/C from inside), you'll be able to picture exactly where we are!
We'll be publishing daily episodes of the miniseries on our new MultiPod YouTube channel, for quick and easy access, followed over time by rolling them out in the various podcast apps. For now, make sure you follow our new channel to not miss those daily updates.

The Everything Conference of 2024 is this weekend! August 1-4, 2024. And The MultiPod will be there!
Co-host and producer Ted Cragg has the great fortune and privilege to attend this year's event. Having missed out on the first Everything Conference, in Portland, Oregon in September, 2019, he is acutely aware of how it feels to not be able to attend, and so he is on a mission to share the experience with you!
Ted will be circulating throughout the weekend grabbing snippets and sound bites, and compiling some longer conversations too, with familiar names and new friends. You'll hear some ambient sounds, detailed descriptions of places and locations, and hopefully some birds singing and waterfalls gurgling during walks along the Mississippi River.
Come along vicariously with The MultiPod and get a feel for the energy and enthusiasm of this wonderful event.
In today's first episode of our Everything Conference miniseries, Ted is joined by good friend and Puttyverse lenda Sónia da Veiga who, living in Portugal, is one of many multipotentialites wishing to go but not able to make it this year.
Therefore, Sónia is sending Ted on a mission to document not just the activities, but the atmosphere - descriptions of people and nuances that we don't always think about until we meet in person: how tall is that person, is there anyone who loves hugs as much as Sónia, will Joel walk around barefoot, what's the temperature like and what's the feel of the Twin Cities like?
Sónia is a great representative of our vicarious listeners and we'll do our best to make her and all our listeners feel welcomed and included during the weekend.
In today's conversation we talk about the excitement of meeting people in person for the first time, the nature of the Everything Conference's interactive events, and take a look at the programming schedule.
We'll be publishing daily episodes of the miniseries on our new MultiPod YouTube channel, for quick and easy access, followed over time by rolling them out in the various podcast apps. For now, make sure you follow our new channel to not miss those daily updates.

Hannah Cattouse joins The MultiPod today to chat, as we do on this show, about a multitude of topics, including copywriting, her home country of Belize, and her upcoming workshop, "Connect & Convert: How to Write an About Page That Gets Results," which takes place on Saturday, July 13.
Hannah and Ted share a professional background as tour guides in their native countries, a skill she taps into here in giving us some background on Belize's cultural history and evolution. If you've ever been curious to learn more about this increasingly-popular destination in Central America, tune in for some great context and perspective.
For instance, how is it that Belize is the only native English-speaking country in Central America, and the only former British colony? What does that mean for Belizeans' sense of identity and community in their wider region, when they don't speak the same language of their neighbours? Do they feel more connected to places like Jamaica or Bermuda as a result, even though they are farther away?
For those of us from huge countries where normal driving distances are measured in hours, it's always fun to think about the reality of driving from one end of a country to the other in scarcely 4 hours, if not less. Hannah talks about the differences between the north and south of Belize, and the coastal areas vs. the interior, where you'll find hundreds of Mayan ruins sites.
Then, we get to her upcoming workshop. Hannah started moving towards online work and marketing a few years ago, and has dipped her toes in a few different areas: helping people with their LinkedIn bios, understanding remote work regulations and bureaucracy for Belizeans, and more recently the value of a good About page on your website, and how to maximize it.
If you're reading this, and listening to this episode, before July 13, and are a member of the Puttyverse, hopefully you can join in on the workshop that day.
In Hannah's words,
"The struggle to write about ourselves is real! And multipods have additional challenges since we’re so multifaceted.
This workshop will walk you through an interactive way to distill your awesomeness (without diluting your essence) into a concise message that matches the needs of your website visitors.
There will be no more “me, me, me!” on your About page. It’s time to master the art of “we” and make all your copywriting better anywhere on the internet."
17h00 UTC is the start time, and you can RSVP for the link here.
We hope to see you there!

Are multipotentialites cut out for politics? Perhaps better than most. But we're discussing something other than your talking head, backroom strategist, gotcha moment politics. We're talking about retail politics, the type that listens to complaints, understands problems, and connects the dots to resolve issues. The type of multitasking, multifaceted, every-day-different job that is made for a multipotentialite!
The post How Do Multipotentialites Approach Politics? With Joel C. – The MultiPod 110 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
Today's episode of The MultiPod tackles a subject we've never broached before, in over six years of doing this show: politics.
Puttypeep Joel Corcoran joins us with his perspective from years of working in the political realm, as a patent lawyer in Washington, DC, to working in constituency services in his home state of Oregon, for Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR).
Joel and MultiPod co-host Ted circle around the fundamental question of how multipotentialites have particular strengths when it comes to the many multi-faceted jobs within politics, jobs that are perfect for professional generalists who love change and variety.
But, there are also the many jobs and positions in politics that are confined to their specific roles and place, the jobs where if you step out of your "lane," you'll hear about it (and quickly) from your superiors.
Political offices can seem like a mixing of oil and water: the specialists narrowly focused on their area of expertise, and the generalists who want more of a global understanding of how things work. They don't always mix together well, and undermining it further is the Beltway culture of, "You're just supposed to know how it works."
Needless to say, the type of work environment with its fair share of challenges and pressure.
But what our conversation today is ultimately about is understanding the nature of partisanship and division, our general lack of dialogue and communication, the gotcha politics and sound bites, and how that filters down to the ground level, as witnessed by someone like Joel, at the receiving end of daily rants and complaints.
Joel shares with us how he responds to this direct exposure to politics, the dangerous moment he found himself in, and his plans for a podcast and in-person event that looks to bridge divides and work on solving problems.

The MultiPod hits its 5 year anniversary on its 100th episode. To celebrate, the original production crew gets back together: Sandrine, Sara, and Mike. We reconnect, reminisce, and reflect on the past five years, all the changes in our lives, how podcasting and this show in particular has influenced us, and how we have grown more confident and self-assured as multipotentialites.
The post The MultiPod at 5 Years: Episode 100 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
The MultiPod hits its milestones: 100 episodes, coinciding with our 5th anniversary week since launching the podcast in January of 2018.
To celebrate, the original band gets back together. Ted and Vanessa are joined by Sandrine, Sara and Mike, reconnecting for the first time in years.
The episode is full of updates of what we've all been up to, news - including two marriages - career and business evolutions, reflections on the impact podcasting has had on our lives (particularly this very show), and most of all, perspective on the Puttyverse and multipotentiality.
We learn how episodes and conversations on The MultiPod helped us make bold decisions, take action and feel empowered and even accountable in doing so. We each talk about how we have embraced multipotentiality and used it to our advantage, as a source of pride and confidence, through direct applications to our work, our businesses, how we spend our time and how we live our lives.
Most of us haven't connected since before the pandemic, so that played a role too in forcing adjustments and adaptations over the past couple years, but our flexible, multipotentialite selves perhaps seized new opportunities at hand as a result.
And we learn how we each feel more comfortable with ourselves and our identities, thanks to this community of like-minded people who bring out the best in us, understand our approach to life and inspire us to be ourselves.
It's a positive and heartwarming conversation amongst old friends, and for those who have been around long enough you'll enjoy hearing some familiar voices again. Links to reach out to Sara, Mike and Sandrine are below, if you wish to send anyone a message. Vanessa and Ted were ecstatic to be able to put this together for you.
5 years is an eternity for multipods, and somehow The MultiPod has kept going, year in, year out. It goes to show that as long as you enjoy doing something, you might as well keep doing it!

Deb Bilger shares an adventurous tale that starts with a true light bulb moment: when she suddenly realized that she was ready to quit her job, sell virtually everything and move to Santiago, Chile to immerse herself in Spanish.
The post Deb’s Lightbulb Moment: Just Do It – The MultiPod 099 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
We enter the 5th Anniversary week of The MultiPod, starting with Episode #099, published 5 years to the day from Episode #001 (What Does Multipotentiality Mean to You).
Episode 99 welcomes Deb Bilger, and quickly evolves into a conversation on "place," a common theme here over many episodes. Deb and co-host Vanessa both live in Edmonton, Alberta, and even co-host Ted spent a few short months there in between jobs, 16 years ago (although it doesn't feel that long ago). We chat about commonalities and the not-so-distinct nature of the city, where streets are numbered and the suburbs are uniform. It can be quite nice though, Edmonton certainly has its merits.
But how did Deb end up there, having grown up and spent formative years in Toronto, Ontario? In fact, it's an adventurous tale that starts with a true "lightbulb moment:" when Deb suddenly realized one day that she was ready to quit her job, sell virtually everything and move to Santiago, Chile to immerse herself in Spanish.
The takeaway: Just Do It.
But it doesn't have to be a big life-changing decision. You can have moments like that every day, which is another valuable lesson.
Deb spent most of her time teaching Business English in Chile, but networking and serendipitous connections also led to some pretty unique and profound opportunities. She found herself translating, from Spanish into English, sensitive, raw testimonials from the 2010 Copiapó Mining disaster in Chile, where all 33 trapped miners were sucessfully rescued after 69 days.
And she had already lived through her own trauma, the 2010 Chilean earthquake, 8.8 on the scale for 3 minutes!
Then we switch to learning about writing and translating labels for Chilean wine, where the payment is sometimes made in bottles ;)
Language is another common theme on The MultiPod, and we find ourselves talking about dreaming in another language. Our subconscious brains certainly seem to know more than they are letting on to our conscious brain. It's fascinating to consider what we don't know we know.
Meanwhile, Deb has heard the Dalai Lama speak in person, twice. Meditation was a significant takeaway from these experiences, and these days there are useful apps to help you decompress and focus, even while waiting in your car.
Our conversation today is interspersed with numerous themes and topics, and includes a big announcement from Vanessa: A new Puttypeep is on the way! Due date in March!

Melissa Valdez lets Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence take centre-stage. This episode is framed around the challenge of building and shaping a career in those (and similar) fields, while maintaining a sense of control over your life, and balance between your interests and values.
The post How the Way You Spend Your Time Reflects Your Career Values with Melissa Valdez – The MultiPod 098 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence take centre-stage in today's episode of The MultiPod, and it's framed around the challenge of building and shaping a career in those (and similar) fields, while maintaining a sense of control over your life, and balance between your interests and values.
Melissav is on this road as we speak, having embarked on a career in fascinating scientific disciplines, yet not wanting to be trapped into any one in particular. Fortunately, of late she has been in the midst of a healthy pause and reset, purposefully in between jobs, and considering her next options. This has meant taking time to rediscover hobbies and passions, build new and healthy habits and ponder her journey to this point.
As listeners of The MultiPod, in learning today about Melissa and her story we also get fascinating insight into her most recent field of Artificial Intelligence. Melissa's research includes studying "deep learning" in AI, and identifying and mitigating bias in AI models. Biased data comes from biased humans, so how do we circumvent that? Can we align AI with human values, and of course who determines what those values are?
Now, narrow-use cases mean it's very unlikely that AI would develop "a mind of its own." It's unlikely that your Tesla will become sentient. The goal in this stage of development is to creat authenticity in AI and the user experience (think chat bots and the like).
And then we pivot into quantum computing!, Melissa's next potential career step.
If you've heard the term and are curious to understand more and put it into perspective, Melissa gives us a great summary.
One of the impending impacts of quantum computing is on our current encryption models and systems. If you're familiar with Shor's Algorithm, you'll know what it could do in the hands of a quantum computer. We could (and probably should) be seeing wholesale changes to the structure and systems of our cybersecurity in the very near future.
So how does one build a meaningful "career" in a burgeoning field, while maintaining control over their choices and commitments?
And then there's the impact that starting a career and getting into the working world has upon other interests and hobbies, which get pushed to the wayside, almost intentionally. As we talk about often on this show, we need to recognize the need to be intentional about our projects, hobbies and interests. We can't count on them to materialize naturally.
"Shape your life and your calendar around what matters to you!"
Keep the conversation going with Melissa, check out her site and leave a message.
We even preview possible future Puttyverse Panel discussions, something new for the community...
It's an episode chock full of learning, inspiration, ideas and excitement!

We travel to Zambia to meet Mapalo, who tells her story of growing up in the U.S. and then moving to her family's native Zambia in her teenage years. Now, having adapted to the reverse culture shock, she is busy finishing her studies and building a business that offers digitization services to a burgeoning economy. Not only is it ripe with opportunity, but it may just be a multipotentialite's dream. ;)
The post From Zambia via The Puttyverse with Mapalo – The MultiPod 097 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
From Zambia via The Puttyverse
Here in the Puttyverse we have always enjoyed connecting people together from around the world, in different time zones, languages and cultures, and The MultiPod is no exception. We're delighted today to welcome Mapalo, our first guest from Zambia, to share her story of being born and growing up in the US, but then moving to her family's native Zambia only later in her formative teenage years.
Mapalo is now busy building, with her business partners, an innovative and original business in Lusaka, providing digitization services for organizations that currently process information and tasks manually. It's an idea bursting with opportunity, and in true multipotentialite fashion has tremendous potential for variety.
One's mind is drawn immediately towards government or business clients, but they are also looking at ideas like giving amateur athletes access to a digital database, so scouts and colleges can more easily find them and unearth their talent. Or college students, who need to find a dormitory or similar residence, and could tap into an app that shows them available space and what their options are.
Along the way, Mapalo has come to recognize that she's more drawn to entrepreneurship than following along the lines of her parents' structured careers, at least for now. She was in fact a step away from pursuing medical school, but fate perhaps intervened and sent her in a different direction.
Mapalo also tells us a bit about life in Zambia, learning the local dialect and even adjusting to the more British English that is spoken there, as opposed to the American English she grew up with.
Moving back then amounted to a sort of "reverse culture shock," where things seem familiar, and arguably should be, but it's still a massive adjustment to actually live through it. The conversation is reminiscent of our episodes talking about Third Culture Kids, and the adaptation that goes with it. All part of the international flavour of our community.

Dee joins us to chat about her many projects, interests and changes, now with the added bonus of having support from the Puttyverse to help her along the way! We chat about how it's a community where you can share your latest, bravest, craziest dream and feel acknowledged, encouraged, and understood.
The post The Puttyverse: “A Place Where You Can Share Dreams” with Dee – The MultiPod 096 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
Today we welcome to the podcast Dee, our new Pop Up Friend. Dee is the type of Puttypeep who seems like she's been around for ages, and yet somehow only joined the community just a few short weeks ago.
Her profile is a wonderful and diverse mix of interests, passions, commitments, projects, businesses, studies and new beginnings. Co-hosts Vanessa and Ted chat with Dee today about as many of those as we can squeeze into 35 minutes.
Dee's journey has taken her from a childhood in Southeast Asia to living the past decade in Berlin, Germany, reflecting her TCK (Third Culture Kid) roots. That remains her current home base, but it might change depending on the evolution of her latest project, which would ultimately involve a 15 year commitment, in other words an eternity for a multipotentialite!
In our conversation we chat about how empowering it is to end things on our own terms, even when to outsiders it typically seems like a strange or illogical decision. Dee reflects on her plethora of ideas and creative projects, and how for her, ideas that have application in the real world make them even more exciting and motivating.
Pursue your dreams and projects, but not to the detriment of everything else. Sometimes we have to focus and commit to something, but we each have to find the balance between putting enough time into it to make it worthwhile, or in other words, to "give it a chance," while still respecting our other interests and projects.
It's the constant give-and-take, and it can feel like a lonely journey. Thank goodness we have the Puttyverse, a community where you can share your latest, bravest, craziest dream and feel acknowledged, encouraged and understood.

Where should I work? It's perhaps the #1 question for many multipotentialites at some point, and an ongoing challenge. The Puttyverse Job Search Support Group has helped many puttypeep make the leap to full-time employment … and here's how they did it.
The post Finding the Job That’s Right for You – The MultiPod 092 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
Where should I work?
It's perhaps the #1 question for most multipotentialites, at least at some point in your journey, and for many an ongoing struggle and challenge. Even if we find a job we enjoy, that suits our lifestyle and interests, how long will we be able to sustain that? What would happen if, for any reason, the job disappears or stops making sense: what are the chances that you could find something similar?
These are very existential questions, compounded by the fact that they may need to be resolved more than once, indeed it could reoccur many times.
Fortunately, in 2021 some determined and helpful Puttypeep took it upon themselves to set up a structured process to help multipotentialites with their job searching, in the form of an official group, the "Job Search Support Group." With now over 78 members, it has become a tremendously valuable resource and one of the most vibrant components of the Puttyverse.
Co-Facilitators Antonia, Elaine and Sonia join Vanessa in today's episode of The MultiPod to chat about the group's development, how it has impacted so many people and how it continues to grow and evolve.
The group is structured around two streams: the "Discovery" stream and the "Landing the job" stream. With coaching sessions interspersed between both. The two streamas were born out of the initial discussions on what people wanted:
Discovering what is your ideal job, what you would like to do, what are your strengths. How to find a job that really suits you.
Finding social and emotional support for job searching.
Having just passed one year as a group, with 11 coaches and 2 facilitators, at least 14 members have now found work that they enjoy, while others are moving along well in the process. The group is putting more and more emphasis on the monthly drop-in huddles as a way to connect and maintain momentum.
Find your confidence, and know that you're not alone!
The Job Search Support Group helps you find what it takes to feel ready: gaining self-knowledge and awareness to follow each step. Remember to listen to your own voice.
You can find the job that's right for you!

Paul Sockett is with us on The MultiPod today: actor, performer, improviser, hugger, traveller and storyteller. Citizen of the world and multipotentialte, navigating the exceptional changes of the past 12 months with grace and perspective.
Paul reflects on his journey to this point, and the lessons he continues to learn about identity, control, safety and how we interact with each other. How we are allowed to choose the words we use, and define what those words mean to us.
We talk about effective storytelling. You don't have to tell another person's story for them, and that is freeing. Practice being graceful, practice understanding a difficult feeling, not because it's good or bad, but just difficult. Get familiar with the unfamiliar.
"We're all trying to perform a show that we have not rehearsed," says Paul. What if there is no big conclusion, no performance or deadline? If life is lived in preparation for something, but that something can never come; what if the preparation itself is the performance?
Join us for an insightful, thought-provoking and meaningful conversation, that takes place very much in the present.

We at The MultiPod are happy to share with you a short excerpt from Breathing Wind, the podcast on grief and loss, produced by our guest in Episode 57, Sarah Davis.
This 3 minute clip will give you a good feel for the style of engrossing storytelling of her guests and the immersive experience of hearing them share their insight.
Whether or not you have yet been touched by close, powerful grief, inevitably we all will, and the stories in this podcast will give you strength and solace when you need it most.

Grief. It's a delicate topic, and one particularly profound and prescient, given the current state of the world. It's a discussion that we've had in mind for a while on The MultiPod, but we waited for the right moment to tackle it, and the right guest to do it with. We have that guest for you today: Sarah Davis, host of "Breathing Wind" podcast, who has taken her own experience with grief – "grief that takes your breath away" – and turned it into a passionate study on what is grief, how we mourn, and how we can help others, each in their own way along their own journey.

Join hosts Ted and Sara and our special guest Ti0, a "Consciousness Researcher," as we analyze how to find clarity as we each deal with the massive change that COVID-19 has introduced and has in store for us.
The post Finding The Ability To Deal With The Unknown, with Ti0 – TMP 056 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
We're over a month now, for most of us, into isolation & quarantine, and it's a moment where we're both familiar with the change yet aware that we're facing a very uncertain and unclear future.
Ti0 is a "Consciousness researcher," specializing in helping people understand the nature of change, the unknown, and how to confidently navigate their own journey.
His own journey has taken him from a childhood in Mumbai, to becoming a software engineer, working for Amazon in Seattle, until discovering his true purpose through an Ayahuasca retreat in Brasil, where he now lives.
This in turn has led him to launch a research and experience centre called "The Infinite Zero," (hence his pen-name). One of their primary intentions is to clarify and make available knowledge about consciousness: merging our external influences and the innate knowledge within.
Join us to learn about Ti0's path and perspective, and how he can help you find clarity as we each deal, individually, with the massive change that is coming and that is already upon us.

Today's MultiPod Extra episode comes from Vanessa, who has launched a new travel podcast called "That's The Ticket!" with her friend, Rinat Ben Avraham. The goal is to talk about travel advice, tips and recommendations, and get an understanding for the real experience of travel.
However, during the process of planning and launching the new show, the global pandemic took off in full force, with a serious hit to the travel industry. We don't know how the industry will recover and change as a result, but in the meantime we can at least find out how it has impacted peoples' travels as they try to get home, cancel other plans, and reconsider what it means to travel, especially when it's suddenly taken away from you.

The MultiPod has gathered two stalwarts from the Puttytribe, Heather U-K and Rita JC, in a conversation about our thoughts, feelings, worries, hopes and predictions. In this time of isolation and quarantine, we hope to give some comfort and perspective, and keep you company as best we can.
We take you to the countryside of rural Tennessee and speak with Marie, comfortably nesting with her husband and daughter, chickens and dogs, with acres of space and oodles of fresh air. It sounds idyllic, and it is! But it certainly takes some preparation, planning and proper mindset.

How does a freelancer start freelancing? How does a multipotentialite choose a career or profession? Today's guest on The MultiPod, Leah Waig, shares her story of putting 2 +2 together to set off on an unexpected journey full of twists, turns and nose-following. It all adds up to an inspiring tale of being open, aware, and persistent in finding work and opportunities.

What if we could approach the challenge of finding time for our passions not with the intention of balancing everything equally, but with the ability to measure the value and importance of each passion, to give each its most effective quotient? Niyoosha Ahmadikhoo is our guest today, explaining her Passion Distribution Theorem and talking about her expansive multipotentiality.
The post How to Measure the Time Spent on Your Passions with Niyoosha – TMP 051 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
Mulitpotentialites have so many passions, so much on the go, and only so much time.
How to balance it all?
What if we could approach this challenge not with the intention of balancing everything equally, but with the ability to measure the value and importance of each passion, to give each its most effective quotient?
This is what Niyoosha has proposed for us, and she joins Vanessa today on The MultiPod to explore what it means, and how it all works.
The MultiPod takes a look at themes of commitment, perseverance, and completion as we celebrate our 50th episode, and two full years now in to our podcasting journey. Neil Hughes is our special guest, an expert on using comedy to overcome anxiety and mental health stigma. Neil has his own journey of commitment, sticking to his freelance, self-employed life for years, as well as being one of the longest-tenured members of The Puttyverse, going on 6 years!

Does it all come back to parenting? Ted and Matt are both parents of two young kids and explore how to identify multipotentialite traits in our kids, finding the balance between pushing children to pursue activities vs. letting them determine what they're interested in, and how multipods make great parents. With some great stories along the way!
The post Why Do Multipotentialites Make Great Parents? with Matt – TMP 049 appeared first on The Puttyverse.
In the always exciting, always challenging world of parenting, what are the strengths of multipotentialites? Are we more adaptable, better responsive, open and flexible to our kids' needs and interests?
And to what extent can multipotentiality be nurtured? How much is dependent on environment, and how much on genes?
Host Ted and guest Matt G from Australia, both dads of two young kids, gather to chat about these questions and share crib notes about parenting.
If you're a parent yourself, especially of youngins under 10, we know you'll resonate with this one. Listen in while you're doing the dishes or changing those diapers!
If you want to slow down this holiday season (or really anytime), then this episode is for you. Our Puttyverse just wrapped up a first annual Slow Down December event to help us navigate this busy, social time of the year. One of the the overarching concerns is how anxiety plays into it all, and not letting it get the best of us. We each find our own path, and Valentina is here to guide us – drawing on her own tumultuous and fascinating journey to understanding and partnering with anxiety.

What if we are all, really, multipotentialites? Perhaps humans are intrinsically multipotentialites: they just need to be encouraged more? JP Parker joins us again for a fascinating conversation about the nature of healing, the rifts in our world, and what you can do about it.

Our conversation with JP quickly transcended to one of great purpose and meaning. Special guest Harsh Gupta joins us live from Kolkata, India, where he has worked as a video game designer for the past few years. It's the event of the year for the Puttytribe and multipotentialites everywhere, and The MultiPod is live on location to cover it!
The first Everything Conference took place September 12-15, 2019, in Portland, Oregon, a unique gathering of multipotentialites exploring a wide range of topics, discussions, interests, challenges, fears and passions. While so many more of us would have loved to attend, we couldn't all be there.
So The MultiPod stepped in to capture the sounds and perspectives of this fabulous weekend, brought to you by Puttytribe stalwart Doug Walker, living out his dream of being a live correspondent.
Follow Doug as he moves between sessions, wines and dines, chats with conference organizers, meets participants and presenters, holds a joint live + virtual meeting of his Fortnightly group and even has time to explores the beautiful city of Portland.
For all those unable to attend, who were dreaming and wondering what it must have been like, join Doug and The MultiPod as we step into the incredible ambience of the Everything Conference.
After a year and a half of consistently producing new episodes of The MultiPod every two weeks... we took a break.
Episode 41 of The MultiPod comes to you seven weeks after Episode 40, an eternity in MultiPod land! There were numerous reasons for such a long break (mostly, the hosts just being very, very busy), but finally the time has come to restart.
And so we were faced with the classic multipotentialite conundrum, how do we get back into the groove? Can we really just pick up where we left off? Is it really so easy to recapture that nice, steady routine and rhythm that we had for 18 months?
If all things have a beginning, then perhaps all things can have a restart as well. If you have ever struggled with motivation, overwhelm, guilt or frustration in getting back into your projects, then join us as we journey down that very road ourselves and share what we learn along the way.
In April of this year, the Puttytribe's Annie Sissons launched, after 11 years of research, planning and wondering, her own travel consultancy business. The product of a decade of desire and intention, and now: a real, bona-fide business.
Annie joins us to share her story of travel as a lifestyle inspiration, how she knew in an instant that travel would be the focus of her life, her aborted first attempt at a business 3 years ago, and how this time, it's different. This time, she is in it to win it and she's off to a flying start.
Finding the right job is often a deep struggle for multipotentialites. We too easily end up forced to focus on the one thing that is the nature of that job, and are left trying to find time for our other interests and ideas.
Sure we all have bills to pay and even ambitions to pursue, but are some jobs better than others when it comes to being a healthy multipotentialite?
Co-hosts Vanessa and Sara chat today about Sara's new line of work, how it fits with her lifestyle and priorities, and give some perspective to fellow multipods trying to figure out their best options as well.
How much of a creative do you think you are? What does creativity mean to you? Does the creative journey shapes who we are?
In this podcast episode, Sara interviews Iris Petra about creativity and The Artist’s Way, a very popular book by Julia Cameron that helps people reconnect with their creative nature.
Iris was born with complicated health issues, but she sees them as a gift to be able to be a full time creative. In this conversation, you will get to meet her and learn about her beautiful perspective on health and creativity.
The Puttytribe's first ever large-scale live event is coming up this September! Joel Zaslofsky joins Ted and Sara to talk about how the Everything Conference will work, what it's like to design an event for multipotentialites, and whether there will be a remote option for all of us who would love to be there!
Join us for this fascinating behind the scenes look at multipotentiality in action.
"What kind of relationship do you want when you grow up?"
You've likely never been asked that question! Yet why don't we initiate that conversation with our kids, or think about it for ourselves? Multipotentialites challenge the notion of conforming to one set career path, and look for other options and possibilities.
Relationship expert Michelle Zaylar is here to tell us that we can take the same approach when thinking about relationships, because the more we challenge and question our preconceptions, the healthier a relationship we can have.
The MultiPod travels (digitally) to Malawi to get to know Thrive, a new and active member of the Puttytribe.
Thrive shares with us his story of how embracing reading and learning has given him an understanding not just into the world, but into his own multipotentialite personality. It has helped him combat stress, pressure and expectations. Currently studying Architecture, but with an interest in Corporate Law, Accounting, Blogging, Web Development, Advanced Mathematics, Parametrics, Investing and Coding (amongst other things!), Thrive dreams big and brings positivity to himself and those around him.
Join us for a window into the world of a multipotentialite in Africa.
Puttytribe member Alberto Martínez lives with his wife on the Lofoten Islands of Norway, a remote archipelago more than two-thirds the way up the Norweigan coast, 100 km north of the Arctic Circle, population less than 25,000.
What brought them here from their native Spain ten years ago, without jobs, contacts or speaking a word of Norweigan? How have they adapted to a life so isolated and unfamiliar?
Alberto and host Ted explore the notion of whether multipotentialites are particularly attracted to remote, quieter locations, some of the struggles he has faced as a multipod living where he does, and also the benefits such a life and environment affords.
And if you are thinking right now of Norweigan fjords, soaring cliffs, glaciers, rolling green hills and picturesque villages, then you'll have some idea of why such a special place has become their home.
Gillian takes the microphone today for an outstanding in-depth conversation with the Puttytribe's Heather Ussery-Knight, one of the community's chief motivators and architects.
In this episode, Heather shares deep insight into the mentality of writing, embracing your inner critic and how to feel confident and deserving, right down to crafting your characters, story arc and creating a hook.
If you are looking for a boost of enthusiasm and adrenaline, of practical writing instruction combined with deeper psychology, take the time to listen in to this great discussion on the merits of writing, imagination and the value of your creativity.
MultiPod Extras is a new project of The MultiPod, where the hosts test out new podcast ideas in a bonus, typically one-off format.

Today's MultiPod Extra episode comes from Ted, who wants to test out a travel podcast idea. His vision is to interview real, everyday travellers who have just returned from their trip (or are perhaps even live on location!), and capture the excitement and adrenaline of being out there exploring the world.
Fun and memorable stories would be intermixed with practical tips and details about how they planned and put their trip together. The show could have particular appeal to those who love to research and plan their own travel, and compare their notes with others.
The opportunity to demo the idea arrived when Ted's brother Andy spent 6 weeks backpacking around Cuba with his wife and three young kids. They had scarcely been home for a week, so the logistics and memories were still very fresh.
If you are curious about travel in the real Cuba away from the resorts, including how to find accommodation and transport, what sort of prices to expect, what to eat and how to get around with kids, then this episode will help clear the fog and give you a much better understanding.
Ted and Andy talk about life in Cuba, the people and their interactions with travellers, the culture and even a bit of history and politics. You may certainly feel inspired to go yourself, but at the very least will hopefully feel like you are there vicariously, enjoying the sights and sounds of a fascinating country.
Highlights:
In this episode, Puttytribe stalwart Nickita Fyens joins hosts Vanessa & Ted to talk about practical applications for turning your dreams and passions into reality. We’re talking both actual apps as well as psychological tools.
Nickita knows what she’s talking about: her passion is helping others see their passions come to life, and not fall by the wayside in a blur of overwhelm and confusion. Passions Pilot is her site, listen in to learn all about it.
In this episode, The MultiPod host Ted opens up about his own journey in pursuing a new career path and shares some great insights into building confidence, experimentation, and embracing the journey as a means of self-discovery.
It's your life, it's your time. Those things you've dreamt of doing, you can do them! Why do we hold ourselves back? The answers go much deeper beneath the surface of our psyche and identity.
Expert hummingbird and positive influencer Vikki Coombes is here to help us on our journey. But it's not her who will give you permission, listen in and you will find it within yourself.
In this episode, Claire, managing editor of Puttylike, talks about burnout in today’s economy and how to utilize self-care and clear boundaries to keep yourself recharged and balanced.
In this episode, Henriette, the leader of this year’s Jumpstart January event in the Puttytribe, shares her insights into finding focus and motivation in the new year. It’s filled with ideas to boost your productivity and energize your projects.
The MultiPod published its first episode exactly one year ago, and what a ride it's been. We've created 27 episodes, met lots of puttypeep, and gained new skills, advice and knowledge.
Today Sandrine, Sara, Vanessa and Ted reflect on the experience of podcasting and exploring topics of multipotentiality over the past year, with the underlying question of, "Should we continue?"
Multipotentialites always face existential questions about keeping going with their projects. What will The MultiPod choose?
Tune in to find out the answer!

In this episode, Ted talks with Atiba Shaikh, a promising young blogger, talented writer and multipotentialite. She shares how blogging is particularly ideal for the multipotentialite, challenges you to focus while incorporating your multiple interests, and can even leave you questioning your career path.
In this episode, we explore who our role models are as multipotentialites. True to form, multipods draw inspiration and motivation from numerous sources, resulting in multiple role models.
Inspired by the blog post on Puttylike, we consider the concept of the "frankenstein" role model: putting bits and pieces together to create a hybrid image of someone.
Since we are each a construct of our own interests and passions, we cannot expect to find a role model that mirrors our own, individual lives. So we create one!
In this episode, Gillian from the Multipod Motivator explains how she has been able to find career stability by developing and applying skills in multiple, parallel jobs. Don't miss this fun conversation with lots of great anecdotes!
The second Puttython of 2018 is upon us, taking place the weekend of October 27-28, and The MultiPod is here to get you set up, excited, motivated and determined to take some action, even if it means just sitting on the beach! The Puttython is our chance to set aside distractions, let ideas and inspiration flow freely, and give ourselves permission to try new things, complete other things or just let spontaneity happen.
For instance, you could be in China, teaching English, like Michael. A Puttytribe member for over a year, he's off on new adventures spending a year abroad from the UK, and shares with us his experiences and observations so far, his plans for the weekend and why it was time to pursue his long-held dream to live in China.
Michael has a fabulous new travelblog, complete with many great pictures of his travels so far and day-to-day life in Guiyang.
Be sure to check it out here: https://michaelmab6.wordpress.com
Meanwhile, Erika Backberg is the Puttython coordinator, and returns to The MultiPod to set the stage for another big Puttytribe weekend. We chat about how the Puttython has evolved over the past couple years, and some ideas and possibilities for the future.

If you need to convert the start time to your local time, use one of these two time zone converters: Time and Date or The Time Zone Converter.
Time zone note for Europeans: You switch from CEST to CET at 2:00 a.m. CET on October 28. Adjust your clocks and calendar accordingly.

In this episode you’ll learn about the self-directed democratic education system and how it can provide unique opportunities for children to explore multiple interests while developing life skills.
In this episode you’ll learn about the Bahá'í faith and connections between religion, faith, spirituality and multipotentiality.
In a continuation from last week’s episode Sara and Charlotte discuss how to design a circular community that reduces the influence of traditional pyramid hierarchical structures. They talk about leaving healthy room for failures, how to learn from them, and why you should ask more of people so you don’t end up with the bare minimum.
A well designed circular community will perpetuate like a living organism, with life and vigor. Don’t miss the discussion!
This is part two of a two-part discussion.
In this episode you’ll be introduced to community builder extraordinaire Charlotte Wolters, who talks about strategies, methodologies, values and priorities, all wrapped up in a multipotentialite perspective. Sara Oliver hosts this special, 2-part episode.
In this episode you’ll learn about the importance of embracing your past and recognizing the key learnings that have already prepared you for your “next big thing.”
In this episode you’ll learn three unique perspectives about money and how separating “who you are” from “what you do” is a crucial step in recognizing your value in the world.
In this episode you’ll learn about being “massively simultaneous” in your pursuit of multiple interests and how it really is possible to balance it all without losing interest
You're about to learn how to see and leap over stumbling blocks like shiny object syndrome or imposter syndrome, some key resources to (re)define who you are and what you do, plus how to be productive during periods of deep learning.
