Driving home last week, during those deep thoughts that only the absolute sloooowness of rush hour can produce, I rememberd that this summer will mark 20 years since Phyllis Hymans' death. Twenty years later there are still no words.
This weekend- when I tripped across the reminder that is was Cupid's Hunt time again, I knew who to showcase. Yet, something was incomplete. In memorializing the loss of Phyllis Hyman, my thoughts turned to Teena Marie. Like Phyllis, Teena Marie was an artist whose talent never received the recognition it truly deserved.
So my Cupid's Hunt 2015 is an appreciation of two incomparable ladies of deep soul, both gone too soon, leaving us with a catalog of lovesongs. Songs of celebration, anticipation, jubilation, disappointment, despair, emptiness, loneliness, and redemption.

Being Eddie Levert's son certainly didn't hurt him. However, his talent as a producer, writer and singer left behind a body of talented work that is all his to claim. One of the last true, pure R&B male singers that respected and celebrated the craft in its best form.

This is my first foray into Todd Grundy's annual Cupid's Hunt musical collaboration. For several years, a wonderful selection of musical podcasters have put together playlists to post specifically for Valentine's Day.
Ultimately, Valentine's Day is about sharing, and regardless of the politics of your "get down", it's impossible to escape it's theme of togetherness, entanglement, bodies wrapped, souls merged, hearts entwined.....
