Sometimes it’s easier to just let things go. But what does that look like in a culture that holds up anger as a virtue? Radio host Brant Hansen talks about giving up our “right” to be offendable:
“It’s hard to get rid of anger. It’s excruciating to forgive – that’s why the alternative to anger is forgiveness. Because you can’t do both at the same time.” Brant points out that in Scripture, we’re called to lay down our anger.
How then should we respond to injustice, suffering, oppression, and even murder?
• Choose to forgive.
• Realize that when we get angry at someone, we’re making presumptions about their motives, attitude, and abilities that we can’t truly know.
• Pray and act. Choose to let your anger drive you to action instead of indignation.
Brant points out the pattern of mercy and grace laid out in the Bible – starting with God.
“He takes a coat and covers us [in Christ]. We are morally naked. You and I and everyone else listening to this are morally naked. Love covers a multitude of sins… Instead of being angry about sin, I have the opportunity to cover it. Why wouldn’t I want to cover someone else’s sin? Why wouldn’t I want to extend that patience to someone else? It is not my job to say ‘I am entitled to righteous anger because of you.’ That’s God’s job and I’m not confusing myself with Him anymore.”
Brant’s book is .

What is true and how do we know it’s true? As believers in the Bible, we’re asked to defend the scriptures, in particular the seismic assertion that the Bible contains the very words of God. Worldview expert David Wheaton says the Bible not only makes that claim, scripture backs it up.
“The Bible has so much evidence for what it claims to be: the Word of God. Christ says to His Father , ‘Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.’ (John 17:17) That’s a very, very strong assertion of what the Word of God is.”
“All 27 books of the New Testament were written during the time period from the late 40’s A.D. to about 90 A.D. Now, there are no original manuscripts, like the full original letter to the Romans that Paul wrote, but we have copies of the New Testament from very early on–the first half of the 2nd century. These are within the lifetimes of potential eyewitnesses to the events of the Bible.”
The scriptures we have are comprised of thousands of copies of fragmented parts of ancient Biblical text. The multitude of copies provide evidence for the Bible’s authenticity, since the pieces corroborate one another.
“It’s actually a good thing that there are tons of copies. If there’s only one or two copies somewhere hidden away in a vault, there’s a much greater possibility for tampering. The Bible has thousands and thousands of fragments and copies–way more than any other book of antiquity that we trust, such Homer’s Iliad. The Bible has so many copies, that the whole New Testament can be pieced together with accuracy.”
While we can be confident in the Bible from a historical standpoint, David encourages each of us to seek answers in Scripture itself. When you do you’ll discover not only the authority of the Bible’s words, but the true heart of its Author.
“We can talk about the inspiration of Scripture and we can be very confident that what we read today are the inspired books of the Bible. But if we don’t pick it up and read it, if we’re Biblically-illiterate because we just get distracted by other things, or we think it’s too hard, you are missing out on the ability to hear from God.”
“That’s the amazing thing! God didn’t just create the world and go silent after that. There’s general revelation – we see all around us the evidence that there’s a God of this amazing universe. He went way further than that, He gave us a special revelation, which is scripture. He literally gave us a book, written down in black and white, so that we would know who He is, what His character is, what His will is for us, and how we can be right with Him through Christ. This is incredible!”
The heart of Bible study is not just to memorize passages of inspiring words to live by: it’s the very personal process of learning who God is, and how much He loves us.
“If you read the Bible to know God better, rather than just reading to gain intellectual understanding or knowledge of Christianity, you’ll see how personal the Bible is. This book tells us about God, His Son, His Spirit, and by reading it, you draw nearer and closer to Him; it’s a relational book. When you see the power of the Bible in your life, then you begin to share it, and get enthusiastic about the supernatural impact this Book can have on everyone’s life.”

If life is going terribly, does that mean God has abandoned me?
We often fall into the trap of believing that the Christian life will always be happy and carefree. Is there a shred of truth to that?
Liz Curtis Higgs says that while God does promise to prosper those who follow Him, we often misunderstand what it means to prosper. Nowhere in the Bible does it suggest that the life of the Christian will go well in worldly terms. In fact, it implies quite the opposite.
“I’m just going to say it. I’m discouraged and concerned by a church that seems to think that if you love God everything will go well. That’s not what the Bible says. Things did not go well for Jesus as it were. We have many wonderful believers among us who are suffering their own pain. Many of our friends are suffering right now as well.”
What does the Bible have to say about this suffering?
“The Bible says, why are you surprised at this? But we are, sometimes we’re surprised, discouraged, shocked, and we complain.
If God is a good God, why does he do something like this?
“Because he’s a good God and because he’s God and we aren’t.”
Liz says we run into trouble when we try to insert God in human terms. God transcends humanity and our world. Perhaps the best example of this is the story of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ on the cross.
“God is not like us, he gets to decide how the story goes. It’s the Hollywood ending, we want everything to go well. Hollywood couldn’t deal with this story, this is the story only God could tell, only God could live through and yet, what a blessing as we move on to the foot of the cross to see Jesus.”
When life doesn’t go as planned
Liz Curtis Higgs is the author of more than 30 books, with 4.5 million copies in print. In her best-selling Bad Girls of the Bible series, Liz breathes new life into ancient tales about the most famous—and infamous—women in scriptural history, from Bathsheba to Mary Magdalene. Liz’s award-winning historical novels, which transport the stories of Rebekah, Leah, Rachel, Dinah, Naomi, and Ruth to eighteenth-century Scotland, also invite readers to view biblical characters in a new light.

Is your social media life overrunning your social life? Is there a faith perspective to using new media?
Youth director and recovering social-media junkie Kyle Tennant joins us to share his experiences and offers a three day plan to detox, discern, and decide about how we use this pervasive technology. Tennant says it may be time to Unfriend Yourself. Here’s where this timely chat takes us:
Kyle explains how his first experience with social media brought him situations he didn’t expect.
Of course, these new media avenues have given us connections we’ve never had before. It’s an opportunity to stay in touch with friends and loved ones across the globe. Yet, according to Kyle, it’s never a bad idea to unplug yourself from social media.
There is a real difference between the relationships we have with those we see the most face to face and those that we primarily conduct online. Kyle introduces the concept of being “alone together” in today’s online friendships.
What’s at the heart of our presence on social media? Kyle says that our pages and profiles are essentially dedicated to promoting ourselves. We need to be aware of that innate agenda. Drilling down on the concept, we note how many are frustrated when they feel their friends aren’t paying much attention to their social media posts. Where is our sense of approval and worth coming from?
There is a key variance between communication and community. While communication is vastly increased by social networks, there is an almost utilitarian nature to them as well.
So, after hearing all this, should our churches be using social media? Kyle says it can be effective in “casting a vision”, but should never be used as a substitute for actual, face to face interaction.

You’ve been hurt, wronged, treated unfairly, or even abused. The natural response it to seek revenge or want to hurt the person back. But Jesus is radical when he tells us how to respond to someone who offends or hurts us. Forgiveness is a command. But here is why it is so important.
Forgiveness is a choice.
You can choose to stay stuck and hold on to anger, bitterness, resentment, or you can choose to move forward by letting go.
Forgiveness is not about what people deserve.
None of us deserves to be forgiven, yet God forgives us.
Forgiveness does not mean you condone what a person did.
It means the opposite. You acknowledge the hurt and still choose to forgive which is why it is so powerful.
Forgiveness is an individual act.
It takes two to reconcile, but one to choose the route of forgiveness.
Forgiveness is commanded by Christ, not an option.
“Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.” Luke 17:4
Forgiveness improves your physical health
By lowering blood pressure and stress, you reduce the risk for substance abuse and depression.
Forgiveness opens the door to reconciliation.
You can’t force someone to reconcile because you don’t have control over his/her actions, but you can open the door to the possibility by beginning with forgiveness.
Forgiveness is on-going.
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.'” Matthew 18:21-22
Forgiveness goes against our natural instincts to get revenge or even the score.
“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:19-21
Forgiveness means leaving our case in the hands of God.
“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.” 1 Peter 2:22-23

Where do you turn when you find yourself in the midst of pain and disappointment?
Ann Voskamp says we need to remember what our identity is when we’re wrestling with the challenges of life.
“When things are feeling broken and the soil of my life is being cultivated and broken up, He’s going to plant seeds, He’s going to plant something that’s going to yield an abundant crop, but Satan likes to get in and start bombarding me with lies.”
The only way we can discern the lies of Satan is by understand what God says about us.
“I need to know what my real identity is; I need to know who I really am in Christ. Who I am is not how I feel, who I am is who He is. All of His righteousness, all of His justification. I am sanctified, I am complete, I am whole. He calls me friend, He calls me Beloved.”
We must remind ourselves of our true identity on a moment by moment basis. In order to do that, Ann wears her identity around her neck.
“I wear it on a necklace. Beloved is all there is to hear. All Satan does is lie. He wants to get in there and say, you busted up again, you’re not enough, you have failed, you failed again, you are a failure. He tries to rename us in the midst of brokenness.”
But will we let Him?
“No, I am who Jesus is. My identity is on the Cross, all there is to hear is Beloved. That’s my true name, that’s my core. Because of the Cross, that’s what I truly am. Satan wants to destroy our identity in Christ because then he destroys our intimacy with Christ.”
Ann says that we often fall into the trap of believing that our activity for God is equal to our intimacy with God. But it couldn’t be farther from the truth. Intimacy is embracing our identity in Christ.

“No problem is so big or complicated that it cannot be run away from.” – Linus from The Peanuts
What do you do when you encounter pain? Do you imitate Linus and run away as fast as you can? Do you turn towards the pain?
Sheridan Voysey says that turning to face our pain is the only way to conquer it. Often when we encounter pain or hardship instead of dealing with it, we distract ourselves and hope it goes away. Unfortunately, this never works, it only serves to bury the pain and push it deeper inside of us.
“There’s so much spiritual longing out there, I see it everywhere I go. You go to the shopping center and you will find that it’s the new cathedral. We go to the shopping center to go buy a new identity to feel better about ourselves.”
This form of retail therapy is one of the many distractions that we use to fill the void of our spiritual longing.
