Part 1: In groups of four (4) you will create a podcast that is no longer than an hour and includes a transcription of your discussion. The podcast created will discuss a practice issue that each group member has experienced within their practicum or work setting. The practice issue discussed should be something that is directly impacting the community, organization, and/or service delivery to others. Within your podcast discussions you should: 1. Identify and define the issue (why is it an “issue” or problem?) 2. Discuss how it developed (e.g. federal or state legislation; court decision, subsequent to a “critical incident”) 3. Discuss the agency’s reaction to the issue and what external policies are driving the agency’s reaction(s) to the issue 4. Identify and discuss the agency’s internal policies that address the issue 5. Discuss what information exists in the professional literature including the research, if any, that supports these external and internal policies 6. Discuss the implications for social work practice and impact on those served 7. Discuss implications for social work practice including the impact on agency staff and service delivery. 8. Come to a conclusion about the soundness of the practice and your recommendations, if any, for change. Practice issue examples include: record-keeping and/or information-sharing and/or access to records practices; deployment of differently credentialed practitioners (nurses, social workers, counselors); differences in physical environments for certain client populations; the efficacy and rationale of certain program elements; differential treatment of persons based on diagnosis, race, color, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation, age. This assignment will be graded as a group assignment and all members will receive the same points except in very rare situations. Grading criteria for this assignment will be based on ability to identify relevant practice issues, demonstrate critical thinking and analysis as it relates to practice issues and multi-system impacts, demonstrate ability to apply research, as well as social work ethics and values to the identified practice issues and best practices for addressing the issue(s), demonstrate critical analysis and thought as it relates to implications for practice and those served including cultural factors and needs, demonstrate an understanding of funding and policies on direct service delivery, and demonstrate the ability to assemble appropriate evidence in advocating for policies that improve clinical services. Rubric breakdown of points to be given prior to assignment.
