Reading Time: < 1 minuteDan dropped his daughter Ruby off at kindy and noticed there were quite a few fit looking dads. So he has had an epiphany.. maybe he should get fit too! “I think its time for me to do something about it.”

He has sought his ‘Fitness Sherpa’ Ray from Raw fitness. Ray played professional indoor lacrosse, “I was really into the training aspect of that and fell in love with that.” After his lacrosse career ended he transitioned into CrossFit which involves functional movements performed at high intensity

“That was 14 years ago and I’ve been doing CrossFit ever since.” Ray will be training Dan to help him reach his end goal. “I’m going to do a mini triathlon at the end of the term. A swim, a bike ride and a run.”

Reading Time: < 1 minuteEvery day Kirste, Dan and Producer Leon serve up a yummy dish of Newsli. (Like Muesli, get it?)

Liam Neeson may have revealed a bit too much on a recent Sunrise interview. The actor was promoting his film ‘Blacklight’ which was shot in Melbourne. “I loved Melbourne, I loved our Australian crew. I made a couple of pals and fell in love once while I was there, but she was taken.”

After a volcanic eruption and tsunami cut off Tonga from the internet, Elon Musk is helping them reconnect. The entrepreneur has sent engineers from SpaceX to up a satellite station in Fiji. “Maybe Elon is not that bad after all.”

A ‘cheesy’ twitter pun fest started after a cheese shelf collapsed at a supermarket. A tweet from Philly Plain Dealer showed a mound of cheese in a grocery store, and Twitter users were quick with the wit. “Un-brie-lievable. I can’t camembert it all.”

Reading Time: 2 minutesKirste, Dan and Producer Leon shared another Newsli talking about Bruce Willis’ prolific 2021, Bluey’s real life house, and a heroic way to save a dog.

The Oscar nominations have been revealed, highlighting Hollywood’s best films and talent. Including Dan’s sister Rebecca! “For Nightmare Alley for Production Design.” But the Golden Raspberries, or ‘Razzies’, honours the worst. A new category was introduced ‘Worst Performance By Bruce Willis In A 2021 Movie’. American Siege, Apex, Cosmic Sin, Deadlock and Out Of Death are all nominated. “Maybe he just loves acting and hates money.”

The beloved Heeler family home is available on Airbnb. You’ll be sure to recognise the red letterbox, bone-shaped chimney and bay window. There is a slight catch though, only one family can stay in the house on the launch weekend. Keen parents will have to register their interest.

Jack Russell, Millie, who went missing was found stranded on some dangerous mudflats. After 2 days of trying to rescue the pup, they managed to lure her to safety by dangling a sausage from a drone.

Reading Time: 2 minutesAn American man developed a special walk to ensure the carpet in his house lasted longer. So they don’t have to pay to replace them.

So Kirste and Dan wanted to know, what is your cheapskate tip? Glen once fixed a tire puncture with super glue “It lasted for 9 months but I wouldn’t recommend it because it’s not very safe.” Christine had a student who thought McDonald’s sold nothing but soft-serve. “Then I realised they are a family with 6 kids and it makes more sense.”

Rachel knew a couple who made enough money to book international trips. But they did not like paying extra for their pre-flight drink. So they would smuggle in a beer each. “That’s probably why they can afford the trips.” Christine’s husband used bike tire glue to patch her son’s school backpack. “It was a temporary fix but it has lasted over 2 years.”

Some more tips we heard from the family… “I reuse my tea bags for my husband who likes weak tea.”

“When my kids were little, in summer I would bath my kids on the lawn in a shell pool, so I could use the water in the garden afterwards.”

“I cut all my 6 sons’ hair myself.”

“Cut all your toothpaste tubes, beauty balms and cleaning product bottles in half and scrape the last bits out.”

Reading Time: < 1 minuteBlake Proud joined Kirste and Dan with a true Blue Aussie Dish this week, a twist on the traditional Chicken Kiev.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Chicken breasts
  • 1 box of Arnott’s Vegemite & Cheese Shapes (or sub for Panko crumbs)
  • 2 tablespoons Vegemite
  • 2 teaspoons butter2 chunks of cheddar cheese
  • 2 cheese sticks (if you’re a cheese freak)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1-2 cups of oil for frying

METHOD

  1. Carefully cut a pocket into each chicken breast (try not to go all the way through)

  2. Stuff each breast with a cheese stick, plus some cheddar, butter, and vegemite. Then close up the pocket and set it aside

  3. Preheat your oil in a deep skillet or frying pan

  4. Blitz the shapes in a blender or fill a ziploc bag and beat it with a mallet until the shapes are reduced to crumbs

  5. Beat your eggs and set aside

  6. Once your oil is hot enough (around 180C), dust your Mt Barker Chicken breasts with flour, then apply an egg wash and roll in the crumb. Once coated liberally, fry your Kievs on each side for approximately 10 minutes or until golden. If you find the crumb starting to burn, turn the heat down a little.

  7. Serve with mashed potato and enjoy

Reading Time: < 1 minuteEvery Monday Kirste and Dan ask our roving neighbourhood reporters to let the family know breaking news in the burbs.

Dan reported from Golden Bay, where his neighbour has started singing karaoke in his garage. “Six to seven songs were sung. None of them in key.” Louise reported devastation at Hillary’s boat harbour on Sunday night, due to a significant power failure. “My question is how did they pay?” The power was restored at 3AM Monday morning.

Crossing over to Fay in Thornlie, where residents were constantly hearing gunshots. Turning to the Thornlie Community Facebook Page for answers, curious residents were told “it was a car backfiring.” Throwing to Audrey in Gosnells, where a woman was swindled by dodgy furniture movers, advertising $140 per hour. Sounds too good to be true? It was. Minimum charge was 5 hours even for a 2 and half hour job. “Daylight robbery. Man charged on his credit card. The woman was left in shock.”

Reading Time: < 1 minuteMysterious aircraft spotted at Area 51

Kirste, Dan and Producer Leon are back with another serving of Newsli!

Is this Australia’s most unlucky festival? Patrons paid $2 500 to attend Dream Machine held on Daydream Island in Queensland’s Whitsundays. The festival was initially postponed due to Covid, but monsoonal rain and deadly jellyfish meant people were cramped into cafes and hotel lobbies to watch the performing acts. “Did they not consider the jellyfish season at the time?” The organiser had zero complaints and dubbed the festival a success, but social media comments said otherwise. “The lack in preparation was absurd.”

A mysterious air craft was spotted at Area 51. When satellite photos were reviewed a translucent tent with an unfamiliar plane was spotted. A New Zealand family was hiking when they took their GoPro to film some parrots. One snatched the camera and proceeded to give an aerial view of the National Park. Fortunately, it was recovered by the family.

Reading Time: < 1 minuteTim Long joined Kirste and Dan to discuss his new show Momentum. Starting at 9pm Sunday nights on 98five.

The show is made by men for men, where they talk about any topic that relates to men. “No topic is off the table. It’s a very open, honest conversation.” They will be joined by guests who share their wisdom and pick their brains for tips. “Hopefully guys listening can take that away and have a conversation themselves.”

Out of people who take their own life each year, 75% are men. Part of the challenge is they feel like they have to bottle up their emotions and deal with their problems on their own. “If we do that for a long time it doesn’t end well.” Through Momentum, they want to spread awareness and help guys have conversations about their challenges.

Momentum starts this Sunday at 9PM where they will be discussing 10 tips for men to start their year well. Let us know your thoughts by texting or messaging us on socials. Listen to the full chat below!

Reading Time: < 1 minuteGrant Dusting from McCrindle (Or as they like to call him Stat Man) will be joining Kirste and Dan for 2022 to inform us on a whole lot of interesting stats and research.

McCrindle aims to understand how people and society are changing. They conduct lots of research on social trends, population and advise organisations and business on how to adapt. “It’s less about trying to predict the future…More about looking at what are the big trends that we see. We can learn a lot from that.” This morning they discussed all things coffee!

1 in 4 Australians can’t survive a day without coffee.

3 in 4 Australians drink at least one cup of coffee a day

The average Aussie consumes 2kg of coffee each year

The most popular coffee in Australia is a latte followed by a flat white and cappuccino

Older generations prefer to use instant coffee compared to younger generations who are willing to pay for quality machine or cafes. “The mindset was why would you go out and spend money on food and drink when you can do it at home. Now people don’t see that as a problem. You pay for quality…Attitudes have changed over time.”
