"Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right."
How many times have you heard of a "dream job," an extraordinary athletic feat, or even a benevolent vocation that someone has and thought to yourself, "I Could NEVER Do That!" These people don't have superpowers, per se. These normal folks simply have a huge desire to do what it is they're doing and they ultimately have an unwavering faith that they can achieve their goals, no matter how big.
Remember, courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is "going in" in spite of your fears. These are the stories of people who have gone in and fought hard to achieve the unthinkable in spite of the fact that, yes, sometimes they are scared and do have some insecurities. Are you ready to go in?
It's my hope that after hearing some of these interviews with thought leaders, artists, athletes, musicians and entrepreneurs that maybe you too will go from, "I Could Never Do That" to, "I Could Do That."

Understanding the transformative power of adopting new habits is paramount in our journey toward healing and personal growth, but we're often misguided in developing new habits thinking we need to do something big, drastic or "all at once." We're caught up in the desire to "break" habits before they break us. What if there was a different way to think about habit change? What if you asked yourself, "How Can I Heal Myself Today?"
Dr. Laurie Marbas, MD, MBA is a double board-certified family medicine and lifestyle medicine physician. She emphasizes the notion that instead of merely attempting to break detrimental habits, we should focus on healing them through awareness and intentionality. By doing so, we can cultivate a nurturing relationship with ourselves and create sustainable change that is both manageable and profound.
Dr. Marbas shares the significance of developing microhabits—small, actionable steps that can be easily integrated into our daily routines—as a way of becoming our owne "habit healer." This episode serves not only as a guide to personal growth but as an invitation to redefine our relationship with our habits in a more loving and supportive manner.

If you’ve listened to music, let’s say in the last 30 years, then you’re likely familiar with my guest today, but not in the way you may think. Gary Burr is a legendary songwriter and vocalist who is behind hit songs for artists like Kelly Clarkson, Kenny Chesney, Lady A, The Oak Ridge Boys, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Juice Newton, Christine Aguilera, Garth Brooks, Lynne Skynrd, Carole King, and Ringo Starr…and seriously…that’s the tip of the iceberg here.
He's had 14 #1 hits in total (so far), 24 top 10s, and 32 top 40 hits to his name - a master of the 4-minute story arc known as a song.
But, while I could talk to him for years about his songwriting career, I reached out to him about something else — his foray into fiction. On July 5th, 2024, Gary is releasing his first novel called, Reunion - A Rock-n-Roll Fairy Tale and it is his take on the question…"What if?" What if John Lennon wasn’t assassinated? Could they ever come together again and play as a band? And, as a reader, can you let your imagination even go there?
I talk to Gary about the process of writing a fairy tale novel. How is it different (or similar) to writing songs? How did he take four of the most famous people in history and script an alternative story? Why tackle someone like the Beatles? Did he know from the outset how it would end? And, most importantly — what does Ringo (who Gary has worked with for the past 20 years) think of this fairy tale?
We often think about “what ifs” in our own lives and it is a fascinating idea to explore.

Women’s sports are certainly having a moment and, with more eyes on women’s sports comes more scrutiny and more pressure.
The Price She Pays: Confronting the Hidden Mental Health Crisis in Women's Sports—from the Schoolyard to the Stadium explores this crisis in women’s athletics from early childhood exploration, to elite-level competition, and retirement.
Authors Katie Steele and Dr. Tiffany Brown are both Licensed Family and Marriage Therapists who work a lot with athletes in their practice and have noticed the unique pressures that female athletes have faced to be thin, but not too thin, to be aggressive, but not too aggressive, to be strong and muscular, but heaven forbid you’re too muscular.
It’s not surprising that female athletes are apt to suffer greatly from disordered eating and substance abuse, sexual abuse, racism, depression and anxiety, self -harm and suicial ideation.
This new book seeks to answer the question of WHY? Why has this been woven into women’s sports and is the system too broken to fix? Katie and Tiffany don’t think so and this book serves as a wonderful resource for athletes, coaches, parents, and other therapists to provide answers and help before it’s too late.
The profiles of athletes they share are powerful and that’s where the “I could never do that” theme resonates. Despite their fears of retribution, punishment, or damage to their reputation, these women featured in the book all chose to share their experiences for the benefit of future generations of female athletes who we all want to see thrive.

Robert Cheeke has been a pillar in the plant-based community for over 30 years as an award-winning bodybuilder, outspoken vegan advocate, and New York Times Best-Selling author of The Plant-Based Athlete.
It’s his new book, however, that inspired me to reach out and have him on the “I Could Never Do That” podcast. So many want to become more impactful in everything we do (especially for causes that are important to us), but often don’t know where to begin. We get stuck in the, “I could nevers” because we see the big donors, the celebrity endorsements, or the big social media campaigns and think, "That's just not me."
Well, The Impactful Vegan: How You Can Save More Lives and Make the Biggest Difference for Animals and the Planet is a blueprint for how you (and me and all of us) can use your time, energy, skills, talents, and resources to make the greatest impact on the lives of animals and the planet.
Yes, this book is about becoming a more impactful vegan, but the pages and the examples translate into ANYTHING that holds our hearts.
Reading this book made me think differently about how I can contribute to the world and I hope this conversation does the same for you.

Let me provide give a couple of headlines from the past two years of today's guest, Emily Ballenger.
Shock pains in her face, the Berlin Marathon, pregnancy, miscarriage, another pregnancy, the selling of a business, a brain tumor, a birth, massive brain surgery, the London marathon, and the completion of the Six World Marathon Majors.
These events would throw anyone off balance (literally and figuratively), but Emily has used them to create a foundation of stability of what’s important in her life. Marathon training truly is a metaphor for her last two years. Sometimes you don’t get the run or the race you want, but you always walk away stronger and more accomplished. The growth comes from the lessons learned and not the time on a clock.
Emily has no idea what the future holds for her health, but she lives boldly for her baby Beau and her family, proving that in those "I could never do that" moments of despair, a little forward motion is sometimes all you need.

It’s no secret that girls – and women – haven’t traditionally had role models for adventure seeking and exploration as we age. Even as young girls, we’re taught to "be careful" while boys are taught to "be strong and brave." It's maddening.
Author Caroline Paul, a longtime adventurer, started to notice the massive decline in the number of women she would see when she would go out paddle boarding, skateboarding, or surfing. In her late 50’s she was asking the questions like, “Why is this happening?” and, "Shouldn’t we be experiencing adventure at ANY age?”
That’s what her new book, Tough Broad seeks to answer with the women Caroline interviews in her book. I’m talking hikers, wing walkers, birdwatchers, BMX racers, boogie boarders, swimmers, and more. These women aren't experts. But their experiences and the scientific studies that back them up offer important insight into our own physical and emotional health as we age, showing that growing older is no reason for women to sell themselves short.
One thing that is clear: Adventure doesn’t have to be some adrenaline filled, death-defying act, although there is some of that in this book. No, true adventure and self fulfillment can start with a walk outside. The more time you spend outdoors and the more positive your view on aging, the happier you will be.
That can indeed make you a tough broad.

My guest today encountered a personal (and all-too-common) dilemma after she had her son eight years ago. As someone who worked full-time in corporate or tech jobs for most of her career, Jill Jacobs was anxious to get back to work after giving birth.
Not only did she love working, but as she says today, she needed to get back to work to support her home, lifestyle, and new baby’s needs.
Quickly, she realized how daunting and unsustainable this was. Here she was working full time, paying somebody else to be home with her child and, when she did get home from work, she was clearly not bringing her best self.
Ahhh…the American dream, right?
Here’s the deal, though.
Educated women with children are leaving the work forces in droves. What Jill wanted was to work smarter, spend smarter, and love what she was doing. So, since she wasn’t finding it in the workforce, she started it herself. Enter the Better Balance vision.
At Better Balance, Jill and her team connect professionals who want to work less than 40 hours a week with the Employers looking to hire them. They help people find fulfilling part-time professional work, leveraging their education, experience, talents and skills while maintaining a balance that fits their priorities in life.
Jill offers valuable and real insights about starting a business from the ground up, taking risks, and the value of finding mentors and supporters in your endeavor. And, as difficult it is, she also stresses the importance of taking small steps and imperfect action.
I love this “I Could Never Do That” theme of taking a problem and creating a solution. Not just so you can flourish, but to help others do the same.

You’re not strong enough, fast enough, skinny enough…You’ll be last…Don’t bother…Ugh.
This is the crap we would NEVER say to our closest friends and, yet, for most of us, it’s the hideous soundtrack of our lives.
Today's guest is licensed clinical social worker, Pat Spencer who runs both a clinical therapy practice as well as a mental skills coaching business for athletes called, Getting Your Mind in Gear.
Today, we discuss her work around a recent piece she wrote called, “Three Steps to Build Confidence.” (And, sadly, it doesn’t involve scrolling on your phone to see what everyone else is doing.)
We also spend some time talking about some powerful research and her thoughts around “exercise or cycling as therapy.” There is some surprising research showing that ultra-endurance athletes are actually MORE prone to depression and mood disorders, even though exercise is often recommended as the antidote to depression. W
Pat is also an ally and advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community which is facing unprecedented difficulty these days fitting into spaces where ALL should feel welcome.

Being a female in a male dominant space may be rare, but Shannon O'Grady handles it like a boss because, as COO and Chief Product Officer at Gnarly Nutrition, she IS one of the bosses.
As CPO, it is her science and research that are the brains behind every new product development at this company.
When Shannon was just a teenager, she had to give up her early passion for running because of a genital heart defect. At the time, medicine didn't have the technology and procedures it does today, so she was essentially told to quit running and pursue something else.
So, Shannon turned to her other passion - SCIENCE. This led her down years of academia, where she pursued and completed her Ph.D. in Nutritional Physiology.
She always dreamed of working for a sports nutrition company and, after years of letter writing, and knocking on doors, she landed her dream gig at Gnarly.
Admirably, Shannon later came back to endurance sports and became an avid and accomplished cyclist, triathlete, climber, trail runner…all the things! Today, she is most passionate about the sport and discipline of jiu-jitsu, where she is a brown belt.
You’ll hear a lot about how products are developed at Gnarly and how important it is to know and understand your body’s needs in training and racing, but it is her advice and tips for success in life and business that I admire and appreciate most.

If you have ever dreamed of being a rock-n-roll star, this episode is gonna light you up.
Annie Davis decided, in her mid-40s, that she wanted to become a musician. So, in the middle of the pandemic, she began taking lessons and taught herself how to play drums and guitar from scratch.
Music has always been in her DNA. As a kid, she immersed herself in it both personally and educationally. Her instrument at the time was the trumpet.
But here comes that all too familiar story that we've been told - a music degree wasn't going to get her anywhere in life. It wasn't a "real career." So, she ended up learning the sciences because this music nerd was also a biology nerd. She got her bachelor's degree in Human Biology and she eventually found her way to a Doctorate in Chiropractic.
It was while she was pursuing her education that she was also immersing herself in a love of athletics, including running mountain biking, triathlon, and adventure racing. And, because of some bad advice that she received from an Orthopedist, she knew that she wanted to help others, which is why she picked up, moved her stuff to Austin, Texas, and opened her own practice called RunLab, where for the past 10 years, she has helped now 1000s of runners stay active in the game of life.
She's now hustling to build another following with her rock band, Trashy Annie. As she says on her website, "Starting an original rock band at the age of 44 during a worldwide pandemic was a surreal experience, to say the least." But in just three years, she was honored as the CMA of Texas Americana Artist of the Year, she was signed to a record label, and she's about to release her full-length, first rock-n-roll record on May 19, 2023.
It is never too late to be the person that you dreamed of being when you were young.

If you think you could never come up with a different concept for running shoes, well then let me introduce you to the minds behind the latest shoe on the walls of local retailers, Vimazi Shoes.
Vimazi is the first-ever pace-tuned shoe, designed for energy, or as they say on their website, “Goldilocks cushioning and an ultra-efficient push-off.”
Founders, Scott Tucker and John Zilly, join me today to share their inspiration and research behind this innovative new shoe design. I mean, what does it mean to be “pace tuned,” right?? Of course, I asked that question (and no I won’t be running a 4-minute mile anytime soon just by wearing these shoes).
But more than the science and engineering, I loved talking with them about their extensive backgrounds, their passion for running and writing, and their friendship that has lasted for decades. They also talk about the challenges of launching a new running shoe brand during the pandemic in a crowded space.
These are my people. The people who, in spite of all of the challenges and obstacles, get up every day and say, “We’ve got something good here.” In fact, they're in tune with what runners want and need.
From a 4-minute mile to a 20-minute mile, Vimazi is tuned to your needs.

Adina O'Neill is a fitness coach and motivator.
This former accountant and teacher found her passion in endurance sports and coaching when she realized that so many were coming to her for advice and inspiration.
Team B-REAL, is a roster of endurance athletes where every BODY is accepted.
She is motivational and inspiring, but her own side passion is what made me go, "Oh, I could NEVER do that!"
Adina LOVES cold water swimming. And by cold water swimming, I mean, breaking open a frozen lake in the middle of New England in February and jumping in right away kinda swimming.
Yes, my friends, there is even such a thing as a winter swim festival where you walk out into the middle of a frozen lake, submerge in 30-degree water without a wetsuit, and compete against others in 25s, 50s, 100s…It is Un-freaking-believable.
So, yeah, I had to learn more and that’s what today is all about. We get real about her personal journey, about the imposter syndrome of coaching others, and the overwhelming sense of pride she receives watching others succeed.
Mostly, though, we discuss her passion for cold water swimming and the unexpected joy it has brought to her life.

Ginna Hoben was born to be a performer.
Ginna and I went to high school together and bonded over the very cool subculture of musical theater. Of course, she gracefully danced her way through Oklahoma while I stood in the background as an awkward chorus girl in a prairie dress singing “Surrey the Fringe On Top.”
We went on to do several plays together and the one thing (of many) we had in common?!? We both loved attention and adoration and as she says, as the middle child, she would do pretty much anything to get attention — and she meant it!
This led to both a BA and MFA in acting. It also led to stints in Chicago and LA before landing in New York as an actor, director, and playwright.
Imagine that - the young girl who dreamt of moving to New York and being an actor did it!
Ginna Hoben still lives in New York with her husband and daughter and continues to make her living as a writer, director, and actor. She was most recently on an episode of the Equalizer featuring Queen Latifah and her plays have been produced at theaters across the country. She currently has another play in the works with an upcoming live reading of that new show.
Today, we quite literally catch up and talk through everything she went through to live out that childhood dream and how many "I could nevers" she's had to navigate. This "dream life" has taken some unexpected tragic turns, but she is very clear - this is what she was born to do and, to me and everyone who knows her, she is a star.

This episode is so much fun! How can it not be when you’re interviewing the partners of “Team Adorkable” — the zany Swimrun duo of Amy Bush and Trista Mennen?!
I’ve known Amy for a long time and she’s always doing something epic from 100 milers, Ironmans, Ultramans, etc…she’s always an inspiration, but recently, I’ve seen her kicking it up and, together with Trista, going off the deep end (pun intended) on this relatively new phenomenon of a sport — Swimrun…and specifically, the Ötillö World Championships in Sweden, which is the notoriously difficult Super Bowl of Swimrun.
Swimrun isn’t just a triathlon without a bike. This is a cross between rock climbing, trail running, open water swimming, orienteering, and adventure racing- swimming from island to island and running through trails, forests, or whatever landscape the race director dreams up. It's not uncommon to have upwards of 40-50 transitions between the two sports.
And, you’re doing this all with your equipment and nutrition with you at all times — buoys, paddles, shoes, goggles, gels, etc. It sounds SO incredibly intimidating, which is where my, "I Could Never" came into play and why I had to get them on this show.
For as frightening as it sounds, these two make it sound SO DANG FUN!!!! My mission was to have them get me from, "I could never," to "maybe I can," and you know what?! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

On June 15th, one of my longest and dearest friends, Lisa Diamond, suffered a stroke at age 48. No warning signs, no acute trauma, not even a hint that this would happen when it did.
Today, for the first time, Lisa gives us a play-by-play of what happened in those moments — an hour and 43 minutes to be exact from the time she had the stroke to the time they wheeled her out of the OR into recovery from emergency surgery.
She also talks about the physical and emotional repercussions of this event, and the ongoing processing, which is why she wanted to finally open up and start talking about it.
So, if you’re struggling in life right now in health, career, or relationship, Lisa is an open book and a wonderful resource. She invites anyone to reach out to her at any time because, by talking about these difficulties, we can begin to move through them and extract some sort of meaning and purpose in moments of fear and uncertainty.

Well, if there was ever an “I Could Never,” this one might be it. My guest today, Raymond (@the Noodnick) is a master of what is known as artistic calisthenics - which is basically some crazy combination of pure strength, gymnastics, core work, and cirque du Soleil all done with the grace of a ballet dancer.
He literally defies gravity and anyone that specializes in something called “The Human Flagpole” is superman in my book. .
What I dig about Raymond is that he is an open book — both on his training and techniques, but also about his life philosophies. You know when you’re having a wonderful dream and time means nothing? Well, through his training and art form, Raymond wants to, as he says, “Live Lucidly" - when hours feel like minutes because you’re so in the flow of love.
That’s certainly something we can all aspire to.
He calls himself “The Noodnick” because it’s a play on the Yiddish word for “Boring pest,” but believe me, he's anything but boring.

FKT - It’s an acronym that stands for “Fastest Known Time” and if you’re completely unfamiliar with this concept, there is an official website, fastestknowntime.com, where you’ll find hundreds, if not thousands, of routes around the world where people have submitted their times to get that coveted spot of having the FKT - the Fastest Known Time.
About a year ago, my guests were searching for new adventures and noticed something when they went to the fastest known time website. The majority of the routes were submitted by men AND many of the routes (regardless of length or terrain) didn’t even have female times.
So, women do what women do…They got after it and started the Women Who FKT Project. This group of women in the Oregon/Washington area set out to tackle a bunch of the FKT routes in their region.
Women Who FKT started as a small project between these runners and coaches and, in the last year, has grown into a full-blown global movement. Their mission? Calling women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other underserved minorities in to claim space on the trails.
You'll learn:
Of course, I left the conversation completely jazzed to seek one out and give it a go — and I hope you do.
So, let’s claim some space on the trails and welcome Marta, Dana, Teri, Danielle, and Stacy - The power behind Women Who FKT.

As Robine Bots says, "she may have lost her mind, but she found her soul."
Robine is the founder of Harmony Farm Sanctuary, a little slice of heaven for humans and animals nestled on about 10 acres of land between Bend and Sisters, Oregon.
What started out as one pet pig for her daughter (Pig Floyd!) has morphed into a forever home for over 145 beautiful souls including pigs, horses, donkeys, ducks, bunnies, an alpaca, a llama, goats, sheep, turkeys, chickens, and one awesome barn cat named Ronald Weasley.
Harmony Farm Sanctuary is just that - a sanctuary for these animals to live out their years to only know love, kindness, and compassion. For the staff and volunteers, it’s also a place to find those same things. Whether it’s brushing, feeding, or scooping poop, the feeling of helping another sentient being is unmatchable.
And that’s the legacy that Robine wants to leave with her guests who visit, volunteer, or stay on the on-site air-b-n-b. These animals have personalities and they have voices. These animals feel love and they give love. (Trust me - especially when they’re hungry!)
I’m sure many of us feel like we could never do something of this magnitude, but that’s why we're thankful for people like Robine and her family. In fact, she would probably say, it’s what she was born to do.

Matt Whitcomb is the head coach for the US Cross Country Ski Team, where he’s coached at the past three Winter Olympic games.
Even if you don’t know much about competitive cross-country skiing, you understand the value of a good coach and mentor when it comes to achieving anything in life, whether it’s athletically motivated or not.
Today, we focus a lot on the ingredients in developing a world-class athlete. Is it the number of hours you train, or is mindset the superpower of success? Does a dictatorship coaching style breed success, or does it come from a more autonomous “hands off” approach to coaching?
When you’re working with a group of people at the top of their game (especially at the Olympics), how do you get that extra 1%, and how do these athletes deal with the pressure of a glaring spotlight, where that light shines extra bright every four years?
We discuss definitions of success, failure, and the most important question: “Could Coach Whitcomb Ted Lasso his way into coaching a completely different sport altogether?” Essentially, are the key elements of a successful coach transferable to any sport?
It’s an eye-opening chat and if you’re going to learn from anyone, heck, it may as well be an Olympic head coach.

Here are just a few athletic accomplishments from today's guest Deanna McCurdy:
Six national championships, Four Pan-Am championships, 5th overall at ITU Cross Worlds, she’s finished as the top American female and 4th overall twice at the XTERRA World Championships. USA Triathlon awarded her Off-road Triathlete of the Year honors in 2017, 2018, and 2021. In 2019, she competed as a Pro (at age 45), placing 2nd at XTERRA Quebec and winning XTERRA Fruita.
WHEW...Even if you don’t know what any of those races are, you certainly recognize a powerhouse when you see and hear those results.
BUT, what makes Deanna’s success story so incredible is that she didn’t start doing triathlons until 2009 after she had her second daughter. Yes, Deanna is also currently raising two teenage daughters (which is an “I Could Never Do That” unto itself) — one of which was diagnosed with Angelman’s Syndrome at just 16 months.
Life can change in an instant.
Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder that affects approximately one in 15,000 people – about 500,000 individuals worldwide. Symptoms include, but are not limited to: delayed developmental milestones; gross and fine motor impairment; difficulty with feeding and swallowing; issues; loss of functional speech and epilepsy.
As you’ll hear today, her daughter Hayden is one of the main reasons she races and trains —all in an effort to raise awareness and funds for a cure for this rare disorder.
In fact, her most recent endeavor was truly epic — It was the Breck Epic, a six-day mountain bike race in the Breckenridge mountains. She and her partner crushed the race, but her fundraising goals continue and today, we talk about her athletic journey, and also the joy, difficulty, reality, and gift of raising a child with Angelman's Syndrome.
She speaks beautifully and candidly about this privilege of giving her baby angel the wings to fly.

Ashley Brush was born and raised in a strict, religious upbringing and, by her early 20s, she was married, with a young son, and was also a stepmother to two other children.
At this time, because she was playing by a strict set of rules, she says she had no idea who she really was because she was so young and never gave herself an opportunity to find out.
Resentment and depression were the norms, which led to drugs and binge eating to numb the pain.
Just a couple of years ago, Ashley went back to one joy she had as a child/teenager — running. She quietly started running again and, magically, a portal opened to happiness, joy, self-confidence, and profound freedom.
THIS is what she was meant to do…and today she’s doing it. Ashley is a coach, trainer, and ultra-endurance athlete. She runs redjasperrunning.com and the Rising Runners group in Bend, OR. She's also a coach for Team RunRun, working with runners of all levels.
By “pouring love all over herself,” she has started to discover the woman she was meant to be.

In this episode of “I Could Never Do That,” I “shake” things up a bit to take a self-indulgent and celebratory walk down “memory lane.”
Think back to when you were 13, 14, or 15. What or who just lit your world on fire and made you believe that "Anything is Possible?" Was it a book? A Teacher? A Relative? A First Love? Was it a song, athlete, or artist that took hold and sent you on a journey of imagination and unlimited potential?
For me, as a 14-year-old songwriter wannabe in the late 80s (i.e. the best music decade ever), that person was Debbie Gibson and that album was “Out of the Blue.”
In 1985-1986, I saved up some money to buy a 4-track Tascam multitrack recorder and, week after week, I would lay down pitiful keyboard tracks, hit rewind, and then lay down a drum machine, hit rewind again, and play guitar, only to top it off with some of the worst pitchy vocals you can imagine, but man oh man I was living my dream of making music.
It wasn’t long after that I started hearing about this young 16-year-old, rising star who was also writing and producing her own music…and that was it.
Somehow along the way, over three decades have passed and I’m so thrilled to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the release of "Out of the Blue" by talking with a few Debbie Gibson fans and letting them share THEIR stories about the impact she had on them at the time and still has on their lives.
I chose a few old-school friends that I was pen pals back in the day of DGIF (Debbie Gibson International Fan Club), and a couple of new friends I met just a few months ago on her recent tour stop in LA. I even speak with a younger fan who, as she says, was an “Electric Youth” baby born in 1989!
There was a time I thought, “I could never” adequately thank Debbie for being such a bright light in my world, but actually, thanks to her, I have this mic and am honored to have that chance in this episode.

Dan Leite is a long-time runner, multiple marathon and IRONMAN triathlon finisher, and recipient of a heart transplant recipient in 2015.
His symptoms began in 2011 at the peak of his running and his condition, although treated with medication, continued to deteriorate until he was granted the ultimate gift in December 2015. His life ultimately was saved by the heart of a stranger, but the impact remains far-reaching.
Today, we discuss:
The great news? Dan still runs regularly and has completed a couple of marathons since his transplant. He’s also the Chairman of the Board of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and will be running the half distance this October.
He and his family created a fund for ongoing research and support for transplant recipients, donors, and their families. It's called “Rita’s Corner of the World Fund” named after his Mother.
He writes:
The fund’s namesake is a direct result of a conversation I had with her many years ago, when she reminded me that people do not always have to do large acts of kindness to change the world. Mom said that “sometimes we all need to just focus on improving our own little corners of the world. If many people can do that, just think of how many corners we can assemble to create an amazing mosaic and a better world.”
Rita’s Corner of the World Fund is our small attempt to give back to the very large community that saved my life. It is meant to honor heart donors and their families, health care and hospital caregivers at all levels and those waiting on transplant lists. It is our hope that this fund will provide both needed patient services to heart transplant recipients at Ohio State along with funding to conduct crucial breakthrough research in organ transplantation. In dreaming a little, wouldn’t it be amazing if our new fund could help provide the needed resources that create “a new little corner of the world” through research discoveries that allow all transplant recipients to receive their “miracle call” and have a second chance at life with their families?

Spencer Newell is a music writer, producer, health coach, trainer, author, and longtime endurance athlete.
He has certainly run the gamut in his 43 years - growing up as a high-level endurance athlete, battling a crippling addiction to drugs and alcohol, seeking treatment and finding sobriety, diving headfirst back into endurance sports, and unfortunately succumbing to overtraining syndrome not once, but twice.
Today, we explore that fine line of being “all in” on something or being “all-out” — either by choice or force.
His journey is so packed with lessons from both extremes, but thankfully finding peace and stillness somewhere in the middle.

A musician and teacher by day and potato pusher by night! This is the story of Alison James, CEO of Sports Spuds. Tired of constantly feeling sick and nauseous during her marathons and races, Alison heeded the advice of a nutritionist and tried boiled potatoes - BAM!! Success! The only problem? They were messy and not portable, especially when you're reaching into your baggie with dirty hands.
For 12 years, Alison and her husband researched, tested, explored and hit dead ends when trying to figure out how to package potatoes. Finally, they found a supplier with the right machine and packaging...now they just had to hone their recipe.
Sport Spuds debuted in 2021 and, through some grassroots marketing, is now making quite the impact on the endurance scene.
This is definitely a story of patience, resilience, and the determination to keep searching for solutions. Now, they have a great product and a loyal audience extolling the power of the potato!

Tracey Hulick is a plant-based ultrarunner who, at the young age of 12, became inspired to donate her kidney to a stranger.
Upon hearing a story of someone whose life was saved from a living donor, Tracey was also determined to save the lives of strangers, which she did in 2017 when she donated one of her kidneys.
This also led to her creating a nonprofit and global community at kidneydonorathlete.org, which, as she writes on her website, "Promotes the gift of life through living kidney donation among active individuals and athletes, by building a community that inspires, supports, and educates people about the experience of kidney donation."
As this episode drops in early March, Tracey, and 20 plus other members of Kidney Donor Athletes are in Tanzania about to summit Mount Kilimanjaro.
Today, she shares her story of how this uncommon seed was planted and how she had to endure a tremendous amount of resistance from those who she thought were her closest friends. She talks about her triumph when she returned to racing, and now her fulfillment of creating this resource for others so that they don't have to go it alone as she did. Life truly has come full-circle for this advocate and adventure-seeker.

Today, I take a dive deep on a topic that is so, so important to me. Performance as a Plant-Based athlete.
I hear all of the time from friends and fellow athletes who want to increase their knowledge and education around a plant-based diet and put it into practice in their training or on the racecourse.
Today I’m speaking with Certified Sports Nutritionist Elizabeth Inpyn - she has a Masters of Science (in applied Exercise Science in Sports Nutrition) and she’s also certified by the International Society Of Sports Nutrition, as well as a plant-based certification from the T.Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies.
Elizabeth is a nutrition coach for FuelIn, which is an online coaching service and app that takes the guesswork out of your fueling and eating and really helps to dial in your needs based on your personal training schedule.
You might never want to become fully vegan, but let’s face it, we could all use a little more of a plant slant in our lives, yes?

Today’s episode has quite the emotional arc — from this couple's romantic adventure to becoming scrappy accidental entrepreneurs, and going from near-business COVID collapse to redemption and rebirth…Plus, a new book, Venture, that explains it all in witty, thrilling, head-shaking detail.
At the heart of it all? A love of running.
I’m talking today to Allison Macsas and Gabe Steger - founders of Rogue Expeditions, a boutique adventure travel company that creates run-centric vacations around the world.
You’ll find out what happened the moment Allison and Gabe learned that borders were shutting down — all while she was mid-air on an international flight to guide a trip. How have they pivoted in the time of COVID? What do they want their guests to take away from each trip? (spoiler alert - it’s more than just miles. It’s an appreciation for culture, exploration, and humanity.)
And before you start thinking, I could never do that! I’m too slow, or I couldn’t keep up — stop — You CAN do that because their expedition-style trips are suited for people of all levels, all paces, and all backgrounds.
Your only requirement? Be open to adventure.

Megan Marie Myers is a painter, illustrator, and native Oregonian.
After attending art school in Seattle, Megan took a position in Seattle at Chihuly Studio where her job was to coordinate the logistics of creating and installing full-scale gallery exhibitions of Dale Chihuly’s artwork, as well as private commissions of large-scale glass and steel art installations for public and private clients worldwide.
This, she says, was instrumental in teaching her the all-encompassing business side of the art world. It was exhausting but so valuable to her future as an entrepreneur.
In 2013, she relocated to Portland and began working at Trader Joe's as an artist and sign maker. Because of the flexibility and freedom of this job, Megan was finally able to create and sell more of her own work. She and her partner, Matt, moved to Bend in 2015 and this became a huge "I Could Never Do That" moment for her.
Should she transfer and continue to work for Trader Joe's in Bend with flexibility and a steady income? Could she launch her own business in a town where she was unknown? Would this new town even be receptive to her work and unique style?
Well, as it turns out, the town of Bend was not only receptive to Megan, but they unofficially adopted her as the town's resident artist!
Her work is ubiquitous with Bend because it encapsulates why so many people love Central Oregon - inspiration from the outdoors and the connection we have to our natural surroundings and to each other.
It only makes sense because, in addition to painting outdoor scenes, Megan also embodies her work as a trail runner, hiker, and outdoor enthusiast. Earlier this year, she created the Creativity Shakeout run, which connects creatives of all types for an informal weekly walk or run. It's her unique way of connecting with others and giving back to a community that has given her so much.
Megan Myers is proof that if you keep showing up authentically, big magic will happen and, when you put so much joy into the world through your art, how could it not?
Today we talk:

An early pioneer of nutrition-first wellness, Dawn Russell has been chasing simpler solutions for getting your daily greens since 2001, after a stage three cancer diagnosis in her mid-twenties set her on a path to find alternative solutions that might speed her recovery.
Unable to receive radiation or chemotherapy due to a rare bone infection that left her immune system compromised, she tried countless non-traditional treatments, only to find that going back to the basics of fresh, green nutrition was the key.
Russell launched 8Greens in 2016, the world’s first greens-based supplement company, to make it easier for people to get their daily minimum requirement of greens without having to splurge or sacrifice their time. Despite endless manufacturers telling her that getting real greens into effervescent tablets couldn’t be done, Russell was determined and spent five years and went through 264 prototypes to make it happen. The result, an effervescent tablet made from eight real greens: spinach, kale, aloe vera, wheatgrass, blue green algae, barley grass, chlorella and spirulina.
Today the product line of 8Greens continues to expand with the introduction of Chewables, Gummies, Skin and Detox tablets, and brand-new Lollipops, to ensure there’s an option that works for everyone (kids included). Her mission remains the same: to uncomplicate nutrition and make it easier for everyone to get their daily greens, no matter what’s on the schedule.
Key Takeaways from Dawn:
About 8Greens
Real greens for the real world. We created 8Greens to make it easier to get your daily greens, no sacrifices necessary. You shouldn’t have to compromise to live a healthy life, so our products are made with real greens in easy-to-use formats that taste great and take the guesswork out of nutrition. We offer a simple solution to a problem that’s been overly complicated for too long, so that your busy life can be a healthy one, too.

Coach Gilbert Tuhabonye has been leading the Gilbert's Gazelles running group since 2002. It's a group that encompasses all ages, goals, paces, and fitness levels. All are drawn to Gilbert, not just for the promise of getting faster or getting your BQ time (which trust me - can and does happen frequently), but people are drawn to Gilbert because of his smile, magnetic personality, and the inspiration you’ll hear today from his story. Even former President George W. Bush was inspired to paint a portrait of Gilbert in his new book, "Out of Many, One: Portraits of America's Immigrants."
He knows that simply put, running with joy makes you a better human. Running can also save lives as it saved his on a few occasions.
He’s originally from Burundi and was a standout runner and student. In 1993, a centuries-old Civil War between two tribes was raging in his home country. And, as written in the description of his memoir, “The Voice in My Heart” - Fueled by hatred, the Hutus forced more than a hundred Tutsi children and teachers into a small room and used machetes to beat most of them to death. Gilbert was one of those Tutsi students. The unfortunate ones who survived the beating were doused with gasoline and set on fire. After hiding under burning bodies for over eight hours, Gilbert heard a voice inside saying, "You will be all right; you will survive." He knows it was God speaking to him. Gilbert was the lone survivor of the genocide, and thanks his enduring faith in God for his survival.
How did he survive? He ran…miles and miles with burns over most of his body. It’s horrific to imagine, but running saved him that day. It also brought him to the US where he ran for Abilene Christian University and, under the mentorship of Paul Carozza, eventually landed in Austin to work for Paul and RunTex. He’s been here ever since, became a legal US Citizen, and has raised his family here. In 2006, He also started The Gazelle Foundation - building wells, providing resources, and bringing clean water systems for thousands in Burundi.
And, this is why it was the biggest honor of his life to be painted by a US President and interviewed on the Today Show by Jenna Bush. He is the epitome of the American Dream.

Forty-six-year-old, Keri Shaw, discusses her recent clinical diagnosis of Young Onset Parkinson's Disease.
It's a disease known mostly by its outward symptoms - tremors, rigidity of muscles, speech difficulty, and more, but, unless they're personally affected in some way, the layperson knows little about the "why" or "how" of the disease, especially in younger people.
In this raw conversation, Keri opens up about her long process of uncovering the diagnosis and where she goes from here. It is an unexpected 'twist in the road,' indeed, and part of Keri's personal journey is being able to share her story.

Both Stewart Gill and Kyle Klinger swore they would never be on a reality TV show until, that is, they were approached, auditioned, and ultimately cast on Season 1 of Labor of Love on Fox as two of the 15 bachelors vying for the attention of one single woman seeking motherhood.
It sounds like a crazy premise, doesn't it? Who in the hell would say, 'yes' to something like this? That's what I wanted to know too, so we dug right in with some of the juicy questions:
One thing is clear: these guys aren't your typical cheesy reality-show characters. They have depth, personality, integrity, and an overwhelming desire to make something good of this unique experience.

There are those people with whom you come in contact in life and you know INSTANTLY, they’re going to have a lasting impact. I’m lucky that my guest today, Selene Yeager, came into my life when she did. Selene is a journalistic legend and consummate role model especially for those in the health and fitness space.
Her work has appeared in numerous media including Bicycling, Details, Shape, O, the Oprah Magazine, Oz, the Good Life, Fitness, Redbook, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Marie Claire, Better Homes & Gardens, Good Housekeeping, Runner’s World, More, Cooking Light, The Bottom Line, and Cosmopolitan.
She’s also authored or co-authored over two dozen books, including: The Big Book of Cycling for Women, Gravel: The Ultimate Guide to the Gear, Training, and Grit You Need to Crush It, Rusch to Glory with Rebecca Rusch, and notably ROAR with Dr. Stacy Sims.
Today’s talk with Selene Yeager dispels the myth that you have to have everything planned in order to succeed. In fact, you’ll hear that she never conceived that she would:
How? First of all, she wanted it, she did the hard work one step at a time, and she had people who believed in her to keep that unknown path doused in light.
These days, Selene is lighting that path for thousands with her new "Hit Play Not Pause" podcast, where she interviews experts, doctors, athletes, and more about staying healthy and relevant in the perimenopause and menopause years.

After a wildly successful 25-year career in radio where he worked in large markets such as New York, LA, and Chicago, Temple returned to his first love - writing and making films.
For many years, he dabbled in making short films, until one day he decided to take his first self-published book, Discovering Grace, and turn it into a screenplay. After raising all funding, and hiring all the crew, he was lucky enough to turn this dream into the award-winning independent film, Chasing Grace. It sold quickly to Word Entertainment, and can now be seen on a number of streaming services like: Netflix, AmazonPrime and Pureflix, and in 119 countries around the world.
Now, he is firmly planted in what he calls his “Chapter Three,” of life - an author of thriller novels. In the meantime, fans can enjoy his latest book set for release on November 5th called Devour.

Dave Jackson is Podcasting Hall of Famer, Coach, and Author of the new book, Profit From Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood.
Dave talks about the history of podcasting and his early entry into an unproven medium back in 2005.
The word, "podcast" didn't really exist, so how did someone start an online business called "The School of Podcasting" and ever expect it to succeed? Fortunately, for those of us who have flooded the space, it did succeed and it paved the way for a new form of engaging communication.
He discusses some of the money-making strategies in his book, why podcasting is so attractive and mainstream these days, some of the barriers to entry, and the biggest mistakes podcasters make when they start.
His advice? Know your "why" and remember: You don’t eat the fruit on the same day you plant the seed.
Success takes time and I'm so appreciative he gave me some of his.

Carrie interviews first-time author and former ESPN staffer, Jeremy Bhandari, about his book, "Trust the Grind: How World-Class Athletes Got To The Top."
Yes, most people think sports celebrities are super-human (and I swear many of them are), but how did they achieve such greatness? How did some of these athletes go from “lanky awkward teen” to MVP in the NFL or Olympian? By adhering to strict principles - a few of which we’ll talk about today.
There are also many who say, “I could never do that,” when it comes to writing a book, but it can be done and we’ll also talk about the process of book outlines, writing a manuscript, and finding a publisher - as a new author.
So, if your goal is to get good -- nope --- GREAT at anything...Have a listen and let’s find out how the likes of Deena Kastor, Jimmie Johnson, Chipper Jones, Jason Kidd, and many others went about doing it.
Sue Reynolds, author of "The Athlete Inside" talks candidly about how, in her late 50s and early 60s, she lost 200 pounds and found an athlete hiding inside her body.
From her first walk to the neighbor’s mailbox to finishing sixth (and first American) at the World Triathlon Championship, Reynolds discovered the joy of conquering fear and pride to find that the best version of herself had been there all along.
100% of the book proceeds are going to USA Triathlon Foundation to help those with disabilities pursue their triathlon dreams.
Kelly O’Mara, Editor-in-Chief of Triathlete Magazine, has been a contributor at Triathlete for a while and you may know her “Salty Triathlete” columns - a hilarious, often sarcastic look at some of our type A idiosyncrasies.
Kelly took over the helm of Triathlete earlier this year when…you know…things were normal. We were scouting races, people wanted pool workouts, volunteers were allowed to take your clothes off, see your naked smelly body, and help you change in a changing tent amidst the hysterical mass of sweat and all sorts of bodily droplets — not any more.
Her editorial calendar? Out the window. Correspondents at races? Nope. As an athlete herself, Kelly was also thrown into the abyss with the rest of us.
What do you do when you’re the leading voice of a sport that was essentially left rudder-less?
You connect, you adapt, and you use the resources you have to keep people engaged. The result? A product that is better than ever.

It was 10 years ago that The Engine 2 Diet Book was released. It was also 10 years ago that my Doctor told me that I had ridiculously high cholesterol and needed to either take a pill or adopt a vegetarian lifestyle. Neither sounded particularly appealing, but after reading The Engine 2 Diet book, I was inspired to give this "healthy eating" thing a whirl. In just 8 short weeks of living plant strong, my cholesterol dropped 60 points and I lost 10 lbs...I also did my 2nd Ironman that same Spring and set a 34 minute personal best!
It's been an amazing 10 years and to celebrate a decade of plant-strong living, I spoke with the gentleman who inspired me to start it all: Rip Esselstyn.

In December of 2017, Austinite Taylor Dutch was running at Lady Bird Lake with a friend. It was a crowded day on the trail — about 11 am — right near Austin High under the Mopac Bridge. She stopped to use the restroom and what happened next is nothing short of shocking, sad, pathetic and pretty much horrific.
Taylor was assaulted…in broad daylight.
Her essay about this incident and the aftermath recently appeared on RunnersWorld.com and today, she’s brave enough to talk through it again with me, a stranger who became like a sister in one short conversation.
A friend had forwarded me the essay and it very unexpectedly brought up emotions from a past event in my life - 23 years ago- that I wasn’t expecting.
We both processed a lot with each other, but I think you’ll find that, even though the aftermath of a traumatic incident is incredibly frustrating and confusing, Taylor is armed with hope and resolve to help other women and assist in their proverbial chase for closure.

You ever have one of those "Office Space" moments where you’re sitting in your cube or your open-air space office and you just want to say, “Screw this" and go do the thing you REALLY want to do?
My guest today did just that. (minus the whole hammering the hell out of your computer thing). In 2012, Shannon Burke left his full-time job as a municipal planner and pursued his dream. Together, with his love of cycling and his knack for logistics, he created Velo View Bike Tours. The name Velo View is a tribute to the unique way the world is seen from the saddle of your bike. Promoting and sharing that perspective is what Velo View Bike Tours is all about.
Today, they host rides and tours throughout the country including The TN Smokey Mountains, the Carolinas, a Virginia Wine Tour, and even a Kentucky Horse Country and Bourbon Tour. Plus, they are also available for private groups in and around the Chattanooga area where they are currently based.
So many of us have said, “I could never” pursue my hobby as a career…It’s not a real business, people won’t take me seriously, who am I to think I can do this?! Well, you can. It’s a hell of a lot of work, but the result and the views (or in this case, the velo views) are well worth it.

How many of you love riding your bike? It doesn't matter if you're shredding down a mountain or commuting to your job, there's just something special about being on two wheels because it harkens back to childhood and represents freedom and exploration with wide eyes and helmet hair.
Stephanie Kaplan is the Road Product Manager for Specialized Bikes. Yes, many of the bikes you see on the shelves at your local shop were conceived and designed by Stephanie and her co-workers of creative designers and engineers.
This is the ultimate "dream job" journey about how she went from casual rider, to racer, to Ambassador and finally to Product Manager for one of the biggest bike companies in the world in a short span of time.
It's a job that has taken her around the globe and it even made she and her husband a bi-coastal partnership for the first two years.
We talk bikes, but the conversation would be complete without a little dive into her personal life including some unfair perceptions of her "leaving her husband" and moving across the country to chase her dreams in a male-dominated industry. We also touch on the life-changing turn of becoming a Mom because, yes, apparently absence does make the heart grow fonder.
You can have it all, but you have to chase it and make some concessions, but you should NEVER underestimate the power of your passions because they can turn into your dream job!

Buckle your seatbelts, because you’re in for a treat today. My guest is Pete Ripmaster - adventurer, speaker, ultra-runner and winner of the 1000 mile Iditarod Trail Invitational - ON FOOT. Yes, there is such a thing. You’ve, no doubt, heard of the Iditarod race across Alaska with dogs and sleds, but did you know they have a race where they run the course on bike and on foot? I didn’t either!! Holy freakin’ cow. Yes, competitors traverse 1000 miles across Alaska on foot with a sled wrapped around their waist. They carry all their own gear and supplies on this sled and, as the website says, “Every year on the Iditarod Trail is different and conditions change in the blink of an eye during the journey. ITI 1000 competitors may face temperatures from -50F to 35F, gale force winds, rain, blizzards, waist-deep snow, mud, glare ice and bright sunny skies - all in the same day.
I’ll let Pete tell you all about his journeys and almost obsession with this event that finally led to his victory earlier this year.
We talk about childhood dreams, getting lost along the way, and finally finding redemption and pride. But first, we talk about country music and our shared passion for Western Swing music from Asleep at the Wheel and his good pal, Ray Benson.
Enjoy this fascinating talk with Pete Ripmaster.

This is a "girl-crush" episode! When you can't be somebody, you want to be like somebody and I want to be like Mallory Brooks.
Mallory and her husband, Jason, are the owners of Spectrum Trail Racing, she's a Rogue Running Trail Coach, she's the Race Director of the Rogue Trail Series, and, oh yeah, she's also the Mom to her son, Paxton.
She's also a BEAST on the trail and, in fact, last year, she and her friend Allison Macsus earned the FKT (Fastest Known Time) on the 93-Mile Wonderland Trail that circumvents Mt. Rainier. She also recently completed a sub-12:00hr Rim-2-Rim-2-Rim Crossing in the Grand Canyon.
In this episode, she details both her Rim-2-Rim-2-Rim and Wonderland adventures. Learn what drives her, how she developed her love of trail running and why she loves coaching beginners in the sport. It's truly a sport for everyone because, let's face it, who doesn't love playing in the woods?
Enjoy!

How many of you have ever met a hero of yours, or someone who has really influenced your life? How many of you are actually friends with that person?
Karl Gruber has been a presence in my life for the last 25 years. In 1996-1997, he took off from his job in radio and successfully ran 52 Marathons in 52 Weeks to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. At the time, he was the 9th person in the world to accomplish this feat and, while many records and streaks have been broken since then, what makes his accomplishment so noteworthy is that he did this BEFORE THE INTERNET!
There was no Google, no race sites, no on-line donation sources, or listings of marathons. He literally picked up the phone for hours at a time and called Race Directors asking for entries, hotels and any help they could give him during his journey. He faxed (yes, faxed) press releases to media outlets soliciting publicity and interviews. It was truly a labor of love that paid off in donations to the charity.
He was (and is) an inspiration to me and is literally the reason I started running in my early 20s.
Karl still sheds light and positivity in this world as a Law of Attraction Life Coach, Race Announcer, and Running Coach. You'll love our stories and memories in this special episode of "I Could Never Do That."

On February 17th, 2018, author, cyclist, father and partner, Andrew Tilin, was struck and killed by a motor vehicle as he was pulled over out of traffic to change a flat tire on his bike. Just like every other Saturday, he was out cycling with a group of friends - doing exactly what he loved to do.
In this special edition of "I Could Never Do That," his partner, Shellie Thompson Oroshiba, along with her son, Ethan, and best friend, Susan, reminisce and remember Andrew and his impact through stories, photos, memories, and lessons we can all learn from this unthinkable tragedy.
Shellie is open and candid about her grief and how, through the unselfish kindness of friends and strangers alike, she is starting to pick up the pieces one moment at a time.
How can something good possibly come from this loss? Seek change, compassion, and kindness. Be vulnerable and open to love...just like Andrew.

Triathlon Taren is a brother from another Mother!
We have a lot in common, as it turns out. We both were once out-of-shape, unmotivated young adults, headed down a path of self-destruction. We also both found the sport of triathlon (it found us, actually) and now make this sport our passion, our hobby, and our careers by helping others find that same joy.
Triathlon Taren is a social media guru, with daily YouTube videos and two different podcasts. He also has an extensive series of videos, resources, and training plans geared at a beginner triathlete. In this interview, he talks about giving up his steady career as an Investment Advisor for the unknown renegade world of social media and on-line marketing.
What's his formula for success? How has he grown his audience to many thousands in just a couple of years? How does he land interviews with some of the sports biggest names? He starts off by asking himself the question, "What makes me the happiest" and lives each day in the pursuit of answering that question.
For many years, Triathlon Taren was stuck in the world of, "I Could Nevers," but today he is rocking the, "Yes I Can" movement. It's inspiring, funning, motivating and insightful! Thank you, Triathlon Taren.

“I’ve always had a dream of doing a kid’s cookbook,” says Green Ninja Cooks Author and Master of Nom, Nikki Castagneto. “Who doesn’t want to be a ninja or possess superhuman powers?”
Enter our hero, the Green Ninja. Of course, instead of swords, this ninja has kitchen tools and the superpowers are used for exploring the benefits, uses, and tastes of superfoods!
Green Ninja Cooks is equal parts imagination and an immersive hands-on experience with food play. The ‘Play with Food’ cookbook zine series, debuting this summer and written by Castagneto and illustrated by Jess Engle, turns kids into Green Ninja cooks by teaching them how to harness the power of plant-based food. “Our Ninja wakes up, does his stretches, drinks his nutritious ninja smoothie, and sets off on a journey to explore food,” explains Castagneto. Throughout the books, kids not only learn fun facts and clever ways to interact with foods, but also accumulate three to four simple recipes as well.
In addition to the zine series, Castagneto and Engle bring the Green Ninja to life through their immersive, holistic, hands-on appearances around Austin. The goal is to teach kids how to assemble fruits and vegetables in a safe, delicious, and informative way, while giving them interactive missions that range from exploring the mysterious lands where food comes from, to building healthy daily habits that’ll last a lifetime.
“Through local events, the cookbook zine and other online activities, we want to show that nutritious foods are fun. Hopefully, kids will emerge from our mission as part of a community of Green Ninja Cooks, actively involved in their journey to a healthy life.”

Do you ever get the feeling you’ve lived a few lifetimes, or that you’re sometimes intuitively and divinely being led to go through difficult phases even though you might not know why at that moment?
That's how Audrey Wright describes her 24 years on this earth so far. It's been an emotional and transformative journey; one about seeking perfection and control through disordered eating, multiple jobs, schools, moves, and career paths. It's a familiar journey that many of us fall into - utter confusion, really, about what we’re supposed to be eating, what’s healthy, what we should be doing with our lives, what path we should take...Life is about seeking, experimenting, and, ultimately, following your gut instinct and sticking to your convictions.
After following her intuition through many twists and turns, Audrey has found a love and passion for competing as a vegan bikini competitor. Believe me, we spend a big chunk of time digging into that lifestyle.
When she’s not in the gym, you may also find her at Whole Foods and People’s Pharmacy in the Austin area, promoting her new business venture as a Texas Distributor of CoCo Whip— "The Original Healthy Soft Serve" made with Coconut Water.
Audrey Wright is endearing, smart, and passionate.
She’s got a fascinating story and she's just getting started.

My guest is Two-Time Track and Field Olympian and Run Gum CEO, Nick Symmonds.
Many people have a mindset that “success” is some type of destination. Like, “IF I get this job, THEN I’ll be successful,” or, “If I get this time, or marry this person, or get this job… only then could I be a success.”
We know, though, that success is not a destination, but an entire journey that Nick Symmonds epitomizes in the clearest way. He’s been to the Olympics - TWICE - and that alone certainly makes him a “success.” But, rest assured, he’s not done. In fact, as CEO of Run Gum, he’s just getting started.
Today, we talk about the similarities in being a high-level athlete and a successful business entrepreneur. He discusses his fears, doubts and commitment to maintain a work/life balance.
We also talk about running. What does he miss most? When did he know it was time to retire? How has the sport changed?
Of course, we talk about his company and product, Run Gum - a no sugar, no calorie, gum that is the perfect and simple energy boost for athletes, business folks and anyone who needs a little caffeine boost without the GI distress of sugary gels and beverages.

On April 1, 2018, Aaron Gonzales will launch “Paddle for Patriot PAWS” – a 400 plus mile Stand Up Paddleboard trip up the coast of Texas to raise awareness and money for Patriot PAWS Service Dogs. Patriot PAWS is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Rockwall, TX, that trains and provides service dogs at no cost to disabled American veterans.
Starting at Boca Chica Beach at the Texas-Mexico border, he will travel solo – without a support crew – paddling north until he reaches the Texas-Louisiana border at Port Arthur. His goal is to travel roughly 30 miles a day, camping on the beach as he goes along...Yes, beaches that are not strangers to coyotes, rattlesnakes and other predators. And, did we mention the 12 different sharks that are swimming in the Texas Gulf?
Where did this idea come from? What sparked Aaron's zest for adventure and charity? And, why this event? He tells us his humbling story in this week's "I Could Never Do That."
Follow along with Aaron Here:

Patriot PAWS is an amazing organization with a passionate following of supporters. Not only do they place service dogs with disabled veterans across the nation, but their innovative volunteer programs are positively impacting people from college campuses to prison cells. I met Ward Richmond back in 2011 when we were both at an Ironman training camp in The Woodlands, Texas. We kept in touch via social media and it was obvious that Ward loved being the life of the party. He was livin' large - former professional musician, Ironman athlete, Dad, Husband, a high performer at his work in commercial real estate...You name it and he was doing it and doing it well...or so he thought.
As he writes in an article for Medium, "Back in the day, I believed that 'winning' was my superhuman ability to drink like a Viking, be the life of the party, wake up early, go for a 10 mile run and have (what I thought at the time was) a productive day at work." Yes, he was putting away 10, 15 and sometimes 20 drinks a night.
A series of red flags turned into a big white flag and on December 29th, 2015, Ward checked into rehab. He's been sober ever since and everything about his life has changed. Instead of hammering watts on the bike, you'll likely find him in a yoga studio or reading books from some of his mentors like Tim Ferriss, Tony Robbins, and Rich Roll.
His marriage, career, and life were literally saved by sobriety.
He's come out on the bright side and is standing in his light to be of service to others.

In 2006, Courtney Carver was drowning in clutter, debt, and stress. She was also suffering from myriad health problems such as extreme exhaustion, tingling in her hands and face, and vertigo. A diagnosis that very same year sent her reeling. Courtney was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, ironically, as she was training to ride the MS150 charity bike ride for a co-worker who also suffered from the disease. As she says on her website, the diagnosis, while devastating and shocking at first, has actually taught her how to really live.
In order to diminish the symptoms of MS, she had to minimize stress as much as possible. In preparation for that journey, Courtney started a blog to chronicle her efforts to simplify, de-stress and find her way back to health, happiness, and love.
As you can imagine, it has resonated with thousands. Her message is this: "Be more with less means: Be more you. Give yourself all the space, time and love to remember who you are. Living with less clutter, busyness, and stress will help you make the room to do what you need to do."
Today, we talk about her new book, Soulful Simplicity: How Living With Less Can Lead to So Much More. In this book, she shows us the power of simplicity to improve our health, build more meaningful relationships, and relieve stress in our professional and personal lives.

Let's, once again, explore the "whys" and the motivations behind pushing our limits as "normal" human beings.
Texas native, Dayna Latham is, by all accounts, an average athlete...and, by average, I mean to say that she doesn't chase speed or podiums. She has done Ironmans and she has completed Ultra Trail Runs. She does it for the love and not for the glory or the ego. As of now, she's also a mere three weeks away from competing in Ultraman Florida, a three-day ultra-endurance triathlon:
Day 1: Swim 6.2 miles/Bike 92 miles
Day 2: Bike 171 Miles
Day 3: Run 52.4 Miles
Why? Why? Why? Well, it was definitely something I was asking Dayna and her Coach, Nick Logan of Prime Endurance Multisport during this interview. Full disclosure, Dayna has been a friend for many years and I'm actually part of her crew for this event coming up February 16th-18th. We follow along in a van all three days to provide nutritional, mechanical, and, most importantly, emotional support. Not only will I capture some interview footage, but I'll also help pace her 52.4 mile run on Day 3.
Again. Why? Coach Nick, Dayna and I talk about the details of something so daunting. She discusses the toll it takes emotionally, socially, physically and financially.
How do you begin to train for something like this? What does that coach/athlete relationship look like? How much do you really have to train? What do they hope to accomplish after all is said and done?
At Ultraman, there is no fanfare at the finish line. If you're lucky, there may be a few volunteers and some water. So, you're certainly not doing it for the accolades. Here's what I do know...There will be a loving crew of six waiting to greet Dayna with big wide open arms...and maybe a little champagne.
Best of luck to Dayna!

Here is Part 2 of my interviews from The Running Event!
The Running Event made its way back to Austin this past year and this local gal couldn’t have been happier! As their website indicates, The Running Event consists of more than 250 brands including some of the biggest fitness companies on the planet as well as innovative newcomers. It is, as they say, a great opportunity to see new product before any other channel of distribution and meet with key executives at the best suppliers to the run specialty channel. It’s also the chance for the fitness-oriented companies to discuss industry trends and strategize with each other through changing times and shifting buying habits.
For a fitness enthusiast, podcast and writer like me, it’s the chance to go behind the curtains, catch a glimpse and sample what’s to come. I also see it as an opportunity to highlight companies, old and new, who are working diligently to improve our well-being, safety, comfort, recovery and fitness potential. In talking to business owners, marketing gurus and salespeople, you see their true passion for what they do. If we don't invest in the future of our own health and fitness, what can we invest in?
Even though I learned about a variety of products from footwear, to nutrition, to compression, to bras, one thing rings true from all of the vendors and companies - they care about the end user. In fact, these days, so much of their marketing depends on it. Positive word of mouth carries more weight than any ad campaign in a magazine ever will.
That’s why I’m honored to share my positive experience with many of the booths I visited at The Running Event. So many welcomed me into their space to share their stories. Big or small, new or veteran, each company had a human element and, on their behalf, I'd like to share their enthusiasm.
This isn’t so much a review of products because, the way I see it, every one of those companies is doing good. My only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to visit every one of those 250 companies. There's always next year, right?

This week, we take the theme quite literally because my guest is Fr. Rich Andre from St. Austin Catholic Parish here in Austin, Texas.
Yes, a Catholic Priest. Quite literally, I could never do that! But, here's the thing. For much of his adult life, Fr. Rich never thought he could either. He tells us about the moment that the call to priesthood literally crossed his mind even though he was well established in his career as an Engineer. We're all called to serve each other. In fact, I think that's the recipe for happiness and fulfillment.
Ever since "I Could Never Do That" started, I've wanted to have Fr. Rich as a guest for a few reasons. First, he's very funny and quite engaging! I want to dispel the myth that even I had of priests who are just a bunch of old men that are "out of touch" with the real world. Fr. Rich is the opposite. He talks about his recent multi-day hiking adventure in the Grand Canyon with several of his engineering buddies. Plus, he was also recently selected to speak and mentor at the upcoming South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference! He's definitely NOT out of touch!
The other reason I wanted to hear Fr. Rich talk was perhaps a little selfish. 2017 has been a tumultuous year, certainly with political discourse, mass shootings, hurricanes, wildfires and more. My faith has been shaken and I suppose I just wanted and needed some reassurance that we're all going to be ok...as long as we remember to, you guessed it, be of service to those in need.
This isn't at all a conversation about Catholic conversion. However, if you've been feeling a little lost, angry, or disillusioned, I think you'll take away some beautiful insight on finding faith, forgiveness and personal fulfillment regardless of your calling.
I hope you'll share it with others this holiday season and carry his messages into 2018.

Born with a genetic condition that results in sun sensitivity and visual impairment, Webb knew that if she ever had the lucky opportunity to race in the United States, she wanted experienced American, Caroline Gaynor, to be her guide.
They got their chance this past October when Webb was selected as one of only five physically impaired athletes to compete at the Ironman World Championships in KONA!
Caroline and Helen didn't meet until race week, but their "Ironman Blind Date" (pun totally intended) was a huge success!
No Ironman race is without drama and Caroline and Helen certainly had their fair share of those moments. They talk about the highs and lows of their race and, ultimately, what they both learned from an event of this magnitude!

From Susan's Website:
They were unlikely friends. She was a young, overweight college professor with a pack-a-day habit and a bad attitude. He was her boss, and an accomplished Ironman triathlete. She was a whiner, he was a hardass. He had his shit together, she most assuredly did not. Yet Susan and Carlos shared a deep and abiding friendship that traversed life, sport, illness, death, and everything in between.
Amusing and poignant, Life’s Too Short To Go So Fcking Slow is about running and triathlon, growth and heartbreak, and an epic friendship that went the distance.*
In this interview with Author, Susan Lacke, we talk about the important role Carlos played in her life at a time when pretty much everything around her was falling apart. She shares some humorous "dumbass" moments in her own triathlon journey and why, no matter what, it's important to challenge and surround yourself with people who push you to be a better version of yourself than you ever thought possible.

This week’s guest is Austin based journalist Pam LeBlanc. I’m not gonna lie, she kinda has my dream gig...getting paid to try new sports, activities, hikes and other crazy adventures.
If you live around Central Texas, you’ve, no doubt, followed Pam in the Austin American Statesman and her popular “Fit City” Column and Blog. Pam is the real deal and by that I mean she was actually raised in Austin -- What? A local??
Even if you’re not familiar with Pam and her work, you will NO doubt, gain a tremendous amount of respect FOR her and inspiration FROM her. Because, if you think Pam was born a natural and gifted athlete, think again. She talks openly about her awkward years and low self-esteem that held her back from doing many things. It wasn’t all trophies and finish lines for this woman growing up. Good Lord no...She developed courage in spite of her fear...and it’s that courage that keeps pushing her to try new things whether it’s running a naked 5K, rappelling off a building or even writing her first novel…
None of these take athletic prowess. They take BRAVERY and Pam LeBlanc musters it every day. After hiking the John Muir trail for 15 days, Pam decided to start writing about her “Year of Adventure.” After listening to this, I think you’ll agree that Pam has had a LIFE of adventure.

This week, we throw the phrase “I Could Never Do That” right out the window!
I’m affectionately referring to this episode as my conversation with the bad ass and the smart ass couple, Lesley Paterson and Simon Marshall, PhD.
Lesley is a 3X World Champion in off-road triathlon, an Ironman Champion, pro mountain biker and endurance coach. Her husband, Simon, is a former professor of family and preventive medicine at University of California, San Diego and a professor of sport and exercise psychology at San Diego State University. Currently, he’s the performance psychologist for the BMC Professional Race Team...He’s also the co-author of the book we’re talking about today…
Brave Athlete...Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion is a manual for your brain that addresses 13 of the most common mental conundrums all athletes face in their everyday training and racing (regardless of ability level). Chapters are devoted to things like:
Having Thoughts and Feelings You Don’t Want
Learning to Embrace The Suck
Hardening the F*ck Up
Having Low Athlete Self-Esteem
Issues Around Food and Weight
Resisting the Urge To Quit
Dealing with Injury
...and more...
The Brave Athlete shows you how to feel the fear (because we all feel it) and jump anyway, opening the door for you to enjoy your sport with more confidence, grit and gratitude.

In this episode of "I Could Never Do That," I interview singer/songwriters Susan Gibson (who wrote the Dixie Chicks "Wide Open Spaces") and Jana Pochop. They discuss their craft of songwriting and how, even during the toughest of times, they continue to curate new ideas and songs that inspire, teach and heal.
Songwriting is, no doubt, an endurance sport. It takes a tremendous amount of talent, passion and strength to build those muscles of creativity.
In many ways, they are OUR voice. Music heals. Music soothes. Music changes lives. I could never write a life-changing song...Thankfully, they can. Thank you, Susan and Jana!

Distance Running Legend, Dick Beardsley, is an America hero, having won a string of marathons in the early 1980s, including the London Marathon in 1981 and Grandma's Marathon in both 1981 and 1982. He's most famous ironically, though, for losing a marathon: The infamous "Duel in the Sun" 1982 Boston Marathon, where he and Alberto Salazar went step for step for 26.2 Miles. It was a colossal race finish that left an indelible imprint on the minds and hearts of running fans forever, truly illustrating the depths of competition and racing with all your heart until the very last step.
A Hero's Journey is never complete, however, without adversity and tragedy. Dick speaks openly about multiple accidents that left him physically broken and addicted to pain killers for many years. He also talks about the recent loss of his son and the strong faith that he credits for his abounding positive attitude in the face of despair.
His days of competitive running may be over, but these days, he and his wife, Jill, run their own daily marathon as owners of Lake Bemidji Bed and Breakfast and the Dick Beardsley Fishing Guide Service in Bemidji, Minnesota. Together, they have found purpose, happiness and tranquility.
This is a conversation about believing in yourself, following your dreams, holding your loved ones close, and never giving up hope.
Thank you, Dick and Jill

Marcus Cook lives by the quotes, "Do Something New Every Day" because "You Never Know What You're Preparing Yourself For."
Two years ago, inspired by the dying wish of a friend, then 500lb Marcus Cook made a drastic change. He knew if he didn't act quickly, he wouldn't be around to see his kids grow up and have families of their own. In September 2015, Cook had gastric bypass surgery with renowned bariatric surgeon, Dr. Garth Davis, in Houston, Texas.
And, less than two years later, Marcus crossed the finish line of his first full Ironman! How was this possible?
Marcus credits two things throughout this conversation:
1) The people in his life that were willing to help him along the way
2) Taking small steps - literally. For Marcus, it was walking just 20 minutes a day. That's all he could do at first.
Well, that 20 minutes daily walk turned into one mile, two miles, three miles and eventually led to triathlons, marathons and Ironmans - all in less than two years. These days, Marcus travels the country and continues to chronicle his efforts at BigtoLittle.com and other social media channels.
Most recently, Marcus played the role of hero along with many other Houstonians who spent the days after the hurricane rescuing people in boats by the hundreds and feeding people by the thousands. He's quick to say that the "old Marcus" couldn't have done this.
His story may center around going from "Big to Little," but to me, Marcus Cook has a heart of gold that's gone from "Big to Bigger."
This is his story.

The Prothro Family Wines Website says it best:
"Life is about the experiences you have and the stories you tell... and the wine you drink."
Ronda and Bruce Prothro love wine. They love the work, the science, the chemistry, and the art of creating a classic wine, giving people a full and well-rounded experience with each sip.
They first started making wine together in their garage back in 1991 in Los Gatos, CA, picking, pressing, mixing, stirring, fermenting, and bottling...they did it all. It was hard work, indeed, but so very rewarding when they got to tastes the fruits of their labor (literally) and share it with others.
This passion continued until 1998 when their passion for making children took over! As they write on their website, "With two small kids and demanding careers, they diverted their time and attention to life without winemaking. With friends and families, they drank the last of their vintages, gave their equipment to another home winemaker, and put their dreams on hold."
And now, almost 20 years later, Bruce and Ronda have recently resurrected their dream and embarked on a journey to find a facility where they could make wine, not as home winemakers but, this time, as a new business venture. Sourcing from the best vineyards in Napa Valley and with the guidance of a consulting winemaker, they expanded their heritage as home winemakers into Prothro Family Wines; a brand focused on small lot production from carefully selected vineyards."
If you love wine (and who doesn't), you'll love listening to their stories and descriptions of what a great bottle of wine means to them. You'll learn about the wine industry and the blending process. Most importantly, you'll learn that, behind Prothro Family Wines, is a wonderful couple that is just as passionate about winemaking as they were as young newlyweds.
Each bottle of Prothro Family Wines tells a story. It is my hope that you will order a bottle (or case) of Prothro Family Wines and create your own memories and stories to share for years to come.
Prothro Family Wines is joining many businesses from across the nation who are providing funds to help with the recovery efforts and rebuilding lives. We will donate 5 percent on all new orders from the sale of our newly released red wines from now until October 31st. This 5 percent discount is on top of the discount you receive for being a Wine Club member or for multi-bottle purchases. However, you can elect to donate your Wine Club discount or multi-bottle discount to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund.

This week’s interview subject is just as endearing, whimsical and unique as the adventure she’s on.
Most of us have heard of “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” or “Where in the world is Matt Lauer,” right? A lot of us are also familiar with the Flat Stanley cartoon that elementary aged kids send around the world to learn about travel and geography.
Well, my friend Kusko has taken these two concepts of travel and discovery to the next level...for charity...with her Happy Tiger Tales Adventure!
I first started seeing these crazy social media pics about a year ago. Here was my adult friend dressed in a furry tiger costume in front of the Eiffel Tower, on a real African safari, in Barcelona, and so many other places. Getting these often humorous and playful shots is Kusko’s way of, as she says, “Connecting humanity through happiness.” People laugh, they hug the tiger, they take photos with the tiger and they take photos of the tiger. Bottom line - it connects people and it brings defenses down. She calls these shots, “a tiger nab,” because so much of what happens surrounding these hilarious photosis often so organic and spontaneous.
During her travels last year, she dreamed up a way of giving back- an "around the world" adventure race for the entire month of September. Thanks to Kusko and the generosity of many, over 150 kids at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas are also following along with Kusko and "Tig the Tiger" with their fully donated Lil' Explorer kits that include virtual reality glasses, a t-shirt, travel journal, bracelet and more. Not only do they get to participate in the Happy Tiger Tales adventure race, but they also get to learn about each destination and make requests of Tig the Tiger along the way.
Want to follow along and see what crazy shenanigans Tig is up to? Dare to venture a guess where she's headed next? These photos are guaranteed to enlighten, inspire and make you smile.

This week, it's my long-awaited conversation with Austin's Cycling Golden Girls, Carolyn Defoore and Christie Tracy. They both represented in a big way at this year's USA Cycling Masters National Championships, bringing home a slew of medals including:
Christie Tracy (ATC Racing): Gold in the Time Trial Race, Silver in Road Race
Carolyn Defoore (Athlete Architecture): Gold in Road Race, Silver in Crit Race
In the conversation, which is an article in the September issue of Austin Fit Magazine, we talk about the differences between the different cycling disciplines, what it takes to be good at any or all of these specialties, the arduous physical and mental preparation, what it means to be a mentor for up-an-comers, and, most importantly, how to get over fears of failure and crashing.
Our Golden Girls spill it all and we celebrate their victories!

We've got a party, a celebration, in this episode of "I Could Never Do That," which I'm affectionately changing to "I Could Never Do That (Yet!)" for this show.
Two-and-a-half years ago, a freak fall rendered Laurie Allen, a nine-time Ironman, a quadriplegic. The accident may have broken her neck, but it didn't break her spirit or will to return to the sport she loves.
On August 6th, 2017, Laurie did return to triathlon at Jack's Generic Tri in Austin with the help of her tribe, "Team Yet!" In this show, we talk to members of her team and how this journey has transformed their lives. Of course, we also dive deep with Laurie and talk about some of the good, the bad, and the ugly of the last two years.
We don't mince words or emotions. You'll laugh, cry, and come to know this woman who is made of grit, heart, and, of course, Iron.

Adam Sud has certainly lived a lifetime in his 32 short years. This podcast is called "I Could Never Do That" and it's appropriate to get to know Adam because:
1) I'm not sure how many of us could comeback from the depths of despair in which he found himself as a clinically depressed, morbidly obese, young adult addicted to fast food and pills.
2) How many of us could then build the new life that he has built in the last five years; a life that is full of inspiration, conviction, and purpose?
Ironically, it took a life-threatening overdose to save him.
His journey to recovery led to a 37-Day stint in rehab where, to his surprise, he was also told that he had heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes. Determined not to medicate himself for the rest of his life, Adam made his recovery an inside job by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. The results were rapid and astounding. In 10 months, he lost 100 pounds and was able to toss every one of his meds.
Now, in 2017, Adam is a featured world-wide speaker, reliving his painful story that is now so full of light and hope.
If you struggle with any disease, addiction, or illness, you are not alone and all hope is not lost.
Take refuge in Adam's journey from pills to plants.

My guest this week is Chuy Amaya from Austin, Texas. By all standards, Chuy is a normal guy. He's 32-years-old, works a full-time job, has his Masters Degree, etc.
What sets him apart? It isn't just the fact that Chuy is an ultra-endurance fanatic. His favorite event? Well, he's currently training for the Deca Ironman in Mexico taking place this October.
Yep. That's right. A full Iron-distance race (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) for 10 days in a row.
What possesses someone to do this? How does he train? What advice does he share for others who want to dip their toe in the Ultra Distance world?
All this and more on this episode of the "I Could Never Do That" podcast.

My guest today is Katy Dooley Baxter, one of only a small handful of people in the world to have completed the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.
This includes swimming the 21-Mile Catalina Channel, the 20.2 Mile English Channel and the 28.5 Mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim.
Anyone who knows Katy can attest that she's actually quite the dichotomy of human beings. She's one of those rare combinations of being both tough and stubborn on one end of the spectrum and then completely tender and compassionate on the other end of the scale. Put it this way, her two favorite things in life (besides her new husband) are dropping the F-Bomb and Hello Kitty of all things!
She loves to tell the story of how she hitchhiked to her very first swim practice...at age 5! Things happen on her timeline when she's darn good and ready. Thankfully for us and thankfully for Katy, she did love swimming and that swimming career lasted throughout her childhood into college at the University of Texas.
It wasn't until well into her adulthood that she decided to get back into swimming in a big way. She had been doing some Ironmans, marathons and other endurance sports when she decided she wanted to swim The English Channel. Did see sharks? How did she prepare for cold water swims with no wetsuit? What were her biggest fears? How did she overcome obstacles?
What personality traits does she possess to make her a great candidate for these swims? Most importantly, how has this accomplishment helped her in "real life."
She's normal, but extraordinary. Ladies and gentleman, my friend...Katy Dooley Baxter.
