Is it okay to pray, "Get 'em, God"? What do we do when someone has hurt us, harmed someone we love, or is actively persecuting others? Scripture contains some surprisingly bold prayers asking God to bring justice—and they're not limited to the Old Testament.
In this thought-provoking episode of Encouraging Prayer, Dr. James Banks explores the biblical practice of imprecatory prayer and the tension between asking God for justice while still obeying Jesus' command to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.
Discover why bringing our anger, pain, desire for justice, and even our struggle to forgive honestly before God can be part of a genuine prayer life. Most importantly, learn why justice ultimately belongs in God's hands—not ours.
It's a challenging conversation about trusting God when we desperately want to take matters into our own hands—and remembering that He hears the prayers of His people.

Is spending quiet time with God a luxury—or the most important investment you'll ever make? In this episode of Encouraging Prayer, Dr. James Banks and Robby Dilmore explore why what the world might call "wasting time" with God is actually where our deepest relationship with Him is formed. Together, they discuss the danger of making prayer another task to complete, the difference between pursuing productivity and pursuing friendship with God, and the life-changing power of simply sitting in His presence.
If you've ever struggled to slow down, felt guilty about your prayer life, or wondered how to move beyond routine conversations with God, this episode offers practical encouragement and biblical wisdom to help you rediscover the joy of prayer. Learn why listening can be just as important as speaking, how God gently leads us through quiet moments with Him, and why time spent in His presence is never wasted.

Dreams have fascinated people for centuries—but what if some dreams carry a deeper spiritual purpose? In this episode of Encouraging Prayer, Dr. James Banks and Robbie Dilmore explore what the Bible teaches about dreams and how believers can wisely discern whether a dream is simply a product of the mind or a message God may be using to encourage, warn, or guide.
Looking at examples from Scripture and sharing personal experiences, they offer practical, biblical principles for testing dreams through God's Word, prayer, and the counsel of mature believers. If you've ever wondered what to do with a dream that stays with you long after you wake up, this conversation will help you seek God's wisdom with confidence and discernment.

If you've ever felt like heaven was silent or your prayers were unanswered, this conversation will remind you that your loving Father is listening—and He has never forgotten you.

What if one simple conversation could become an opportunity to share God's love?
In this episode, we explore how everyday encounters can become powerful moments of ministry through prayer. Inspired by a simple visit to a medical office, we discuss how listening well, showing genuine kindness, and offering heartfelt prayer can open doors for God to work in the lives of those around us.
You'll discover that loving your neighbor doesn't always require a long conversation or a perfect presentation of the gospel. Sometimes it begins with a kind word, a listening ear, and a quiet prayer lifted to God on someone's behalf. As we learn to walk closely with Christ, the Holy Spirit helps us recognize opportunities to encourage others and reflect His love in natural, authentic ways.
Join us as we are reminded that prayer is one of the greatest ways we can love the people God places in our path—and that even the smallest acts of faithfulness can have an eternal impact.
Have you ever wondered why some days prayer feels deeply personal and powerful, while other days it seems like your words never make it past the ceiling? In this encouraging episode, James and Robby explore what it means to pray faithfully "in and out of season."
Drawing from Scripture, including the life of King Hezekiah and Jesus' teaching to "keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking," this conversation reminds us that God's presence is not measured by our feelings. Even during seasons when He seems silent, He is still at work—strengthening our faith, refining our hearts, and drawing us closer to Him.
If you've ever struggled with spiritual dryness, unanswered prayers, or simply wondered how to remain faithful when you don't feel God's presence, this episode offers biblical encouragement and practical hope to help you persevere.
Join us as we discover that some of our greatest spiritual growth happens not in the mountaintop moments, but in the quiet seasons when we choose to keep praying. Don't give up—God hears every prayer, and He is faithfully working even when you can't yet see it.
Have you ever felt like you've failed too many times to come before God in prayer? Hebrews 4:16 offers a powerful reminder that God's invitation isn't reserved for spiritual giants—it's for anyone who is broken, struggling, and in need of His mercy.
In this episode, we explore what it truly means to "come boldly before the throne of grace." Discover how this passage isn't about demanding answers with confidence, but about approaching God with complete honesty, knowing that Jesus understands every weakness and welcomes us with compassion. Learn how God's mercy meets us in our most desperate moments and how His grace holds us together when life feels like it's falling apart.
If you've ever wondered whether God still wants to hear from you after you've stumbled, this episode is a timely reminder that His invitation remains open. Come as you are, speak freely, and experience the grace that only God can give.
In a world filled with constant demands, endless distractions, and overwhelming responsibilities, it's easy to lose sight of the peace God offers through prayer. In this episode, Dr. James Banks and Robby Dilmore explore a simple yet often overlooked truth: when life feels most chaotic, prayer is not something we can afford to skip—it's exactly what we need most.
Drawing from the life of David in the Psalms, James shares how turning to God in times of stress, uncertainty, and pressure brings a peace that circumstances cannot provide. Whether you're facing unanswered prayers, difficult situations, or simply struggling to slow down and seek God, this conversation offers practical encouragement to pause, quiet your heart, and experience the comfort of God's presence.
Join us as we discover how seeking God's face transforms our perspective, anchors our souls, and fills us with lasting peace—even when nothing around us changes.
Have you ever felt angry with God because your prayers seemed unanswered? In this honest and encouraging episode of Encouraging Prayer, Dr. James Banks and Robby Dilmore explore a topic many believers experience but few openly discuss: how to pray when you're frustrated, disappointed, or even angry with God.
Drawing from personal experience and powerful biblical examples, Dr. Banks shows that God invites us into authentic relationship—even when our emotions are raw. Looking at Moses' heartfelt complaint in Numbers 11, he reveals how Scripture gives us permission to bring our deepest struggles, questions, and frustrations directly to the Lord. Rather than turning away from God in difficult seasons, we are encouraged to lean into Him, trusting that He hears, understands, and responds with grace.
If you've ever prayed, "Why, Lord?" or wondered how to keep talking to God when life doesn't make sense, this episode offers biblical wisdom, hope, and practical encouragement for deepening your relationship with Him through every emotion.
What does it really mean to pray—and how can we avoid turning prayer into mere religious routine? In this episode of Encouraging Prayer, James Banks and Robby Dilmore explores the difference between authentic, heart-to-heart communication with God and the empty rituals that often get mistaken for prayer.
Looking at the life of Jesus, who was known as a friend of sinners and someone people genuinely wanted to be around, James challenges listeners to embrace a prayer life that is honest, vulnerable, and deeply relational. Rather than hiding our weaknesses or putting on a spiritual performance, we're invited to bring our real selves before God and allow His love to flow through us to others.
Join us as we discuss how genuine prayer helps us connect with people where they are, see them through God's eyes, and become living examples of Christ's love in a world that desperately needs hope. Discover how praying with authenticity can transform not only your relationship with God, but also your relationships with those around you.
Whether you're new to prayer or have been praying for years, this conversation will encourage you to move beyond religion and into a deeper, more personal connection with the Father.

Today, Robby and James discuss the true meaning of surrendering our lives to Christ and his mighty work.
James and Robby discuss the importance of trusting in God, even when our circumstances do not work out how we want them.
Robby: So today we want to talk especially to those listeners who are going through a crisis. And if you’re not, we want to encourage you to listen in. Because today’s talk will be helpful whatever season you’re in, whether for you or someone you love. James? James: That’s right. We want to talk about “Prayers from the Pit”—think about Joseph, thrown into a pit by his brothers, then sold into slavery, one crisis after another. Robby: James, when we were talking about this before you mentioned that you read something today about this that you really found helpful. James: Yeah, that will set this up well. A friend of mine gave me a book of quotes from Charles Spurgeon, the amazingly gifted British preacher. Just listen to this, because there’s a lot of truth in it (James reads). Robby: That’s beautiful. And that really does lead us right into talking about prayer, because when you’re going through something like that, it can be hard on your relationship with God. You can wonder why He allows it, what He’s up to, and that can really have an impact on the ways that we pray. James: Exactly. And that’s what I wanted to do today, to talk to that person who is in that place right now and encourage you, even though it’s hard, even though it’s dark right now, don’t give up. Especially don’t give up on God. Robby: I can see why you’d like that message from Spurgeon so much, because you’ve really been there. I know there were some times where you and your wife had to feel like you were—how did Spurgeon put it—“marked for sorrow” because of what was going on in your life with your kids. But then later, you became a comforter to others because of it, especially the parents of other prodigals, helping them learn how to pray in those times through your book “Prayers for Prodigals” James: Yeah, that’s just the thing. You wonder why God allows it at the time—and I’m not just talking about those “life doesn’t seem fair” moments, I’m talking about those circumstances that are heartbreaking. And then later you see how God really did get you through even those moments when it seemed like He wasn’t there. But you have to go through them, you have to feel it in your own skin. Because if you don’t go through something
like that you won’t be as real when it comes to helping others. And of course that’s the farthest thing from your mind in the moment, you just want to go through it, to come through the other side. And this is where it comes down to prayer. How do you pray at a time like that? I think there are three things we can do that really make a difference, and the first is a simple prayer of trust. “Lord, I don’t understand this, I don’t like it, but I’m yours. I trust that you’ve got this, and you’ve got me. I love you and I need you, please keep me close. Robby: I like that because when you think about Joseph, the Bible tells us God was with him in everything, even when he was in prison. James: That’s right. And think about something else Joseph said later to his brothers. Robby: I know where you’re going with this. He told them, “You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good.” James: That’s right. So after we pray a prayer of trust, pray a prayer of praise. Not for your circumstances—that would be really hard to do that and be real it in—but to just praise God for God, to take your eyes off yourself and put them on Him. Robby: Yeah, that can really help us. I find when I try to do that God has a way of lifting me out of whatever is going on somehow, and giving me what I need to just get through. He builds my faith when I do it. James: I think that’s really true. And faith brings us to the third way to pray—a prayer of thanks. Remember God’s Word encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances, so we can thank God that He is good, He is faithful, and He will bring good even though you can’t see it right now. So that pretty much wraps it up. A prayer of trust, a prayer of praise, and a prayer of thanks. Robby: James, let’s pray for those listeners who are going through it right now as we wrap up. Will you do that? James: That would be good. (James prays)

Few things show us more directly God’s involvement in our lives than when we ask for something and receive a direct answer. But of course the challenge is that it doesn’t always happen that way, and that can cause us to doubt and to question and to ask less. But we shouldn’t, we should keep asking, as Jesus told us. Not because we have a “Gimme” kind of faith, but simply because God wants us to.
If you look at the world around us one thing is clear, people need Jesus. It’s an election year, and many are placing their hopes in one candidate or another. But only God can save us and help us to love.
Today James suggests an approach to prayer that can help you do it more often, and also pray in strategic and practical ways. It just takes a little preparation, like putting together a playlist. But once you start to learn it you’ll find out how powerful it is.
In Psalm 13 David prays, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?” It’s a great prayer to talk about because the fact that you see it in Scripture shows us something really important, that we CAN pray like this. God never corrects or disciplines anyone for praying like this, not at all. Prayers like this are included in His Word to show us that we can talk about anything with Him, even our disappointments.
There’s a phrase that you see in both Ezra and Nehemiah, and it’s hard to miss because it’s in several places. Ezra 7:6, 7:9, 7:28, 8:18, 8:31 Nehemiah 2:8, I’m sure there are probably more references, but that’s just a quick reading, and all talk about “the gracious hand of God being on someone,” and as you read it, you can’t help feeling, “I want that in my life!”

So today we’re talking about starting the day with God in prayer, and why we really want to do this. There’s a lot more to this than we sometimes think. Sometimes I think we can dismiss it too quickly because sometimes talking about this can sound, legalistic. Like a bunch of rule we have follow if we’re going to be right with God. But that’s not where we’re going today. Today, it’s like we’re going fishing.
Today on Encouraging Prayer we’re going to talk about keeping, or guarding our hearts. This is such a vital topic—it effects everything we do. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

Today on Encouraging Prayer we’re going to be talking about such a vital topic, especially in the current climate of unrest in our country. We’re going to talk about the unity of prayer.
A prayer style is nothing more and nothing less than our preferred way to pray. We all have certain approaches, and we’ll talk about that today. But the most important thing to realize as we start out is that one approach is not better than another. Each has their own advantages, and I hesitate to say weaknesses because the important thing is that we just pray. And this matters because if you haven’t found the prayer style that works best for you, than you may find prayer to be harder than it should be. So you might even think of these as onramps to prayer, ways to really help you go places as you pray.
God’s Word reminds us in Hebrews 11:6 that God rewards those who diligently seek Him, and that’s a big part of what prayer is. Remember that Jesus said, “Apart from me, you can do nothing.” So this is part of what it means to “abide” in Him, cling to Him, “hang out” with Him even, if you will.
This week James and Robby dive into some quotes and writings from Charles Spurgeon on the topic of prayer.
So often we can feel guilty when it comes to praying because we measure ourselves against verses like 1 Thess. 5:17–“Pray continually”—and we can think, “I’ll never get there.” But it’s so important to understand that we can’t build our prayer lives on legalism, do’s or don’ts, or methods either. It’s got to come from the heart. And the beautiful thing about that is when we go to God and say “Help me do this, help me be real in this” He will help us every time.
One of the greatest struggles many face when it comes to prayer is feeling like they just don't have the time. James Banks and Robby Dilmore tackle that issue in today's episode of Encouraging Prayer.
