Durability is something that we all seek in one way or another.
I talked about durability in the “Just Show Up” Coffee Chat when I spoke about Cal Ripken Jr and his accomplishment. No way that was possible without him being durable, mentally and physically.
What is durability, actually? It is the ability to withstand wear, pressure, or damage.
Strong
Dependable
Reliable
Resilient
You are uniquely durable. Always have been. Durability is innate for some and earned by all, over time and due to “exposure”
In my mind, being durable is having the ability to last. Think of one thing that is durable, to you.
To me:
Trees
To take that one thing a step further. They develop strategies through adaptations to make them more durable.
Some trees have “learned” to shed their lower branches to prevent forest fires from consuming them. Some trees have learned how to take their roots in any direction to access water. A willow tree will completely go through an old water/sewage line when looking for water.
They use the wind to make them stronger by developing “reaction wood” which is a wood within the tree that has the ability to support the tree, make it grow in weird angles to access the best light. Without this type of wood in it, it would fall.
There are many things that are durable but my question now is what makes YOU durable? You have been through a lot in life. Even if life is “good” or has been going well We all endure some form of “wind” or “drought” in our lives.
Understanding what makes you durable is a key to growth and success in the future. So, what makes you durable, both physically and mentally? What strategies can you implement to help you become more durable/wind resistant?
There is something to be said for understanding how you are uniquely durable and to see where the room for strengthening is.
Are you getting comfortable with where life has moved to or are you still pressing the limits and exploring more?
It is a concept that has been used for years to teach a reconstructive lesson but can it be used in other ways? Listen in!
If you are looking for bad, you will find it. If you are looking for good, you will find it.
Do you have a glass that is half-full or half-empty?
I am starting to see a glass that is 2 times bigger than it needs to be. I see a glass that you don’t appreciate so you are always lacking something. Always. What if the glass is just enough? What if the glass is what you deserve. What you have earned. Is your glass full of goodness and thanks or is it full of want and lust?
Perspective is about the lens we view the world through. One of my favorite things is when we see someone successful we think of them as great, or rich, or successful. What we don’t see are the things that got them there. The setback, the falls, the misses.
When leveraging the power of perspective, those visuals can be empowering if you understand how to use them for you. To some, the struggle is what drives you and to others, the wins are what pull them along.

Mentoring definition is easily understood but it is so much more than that. Mentoring is something that has been done for years. The first hunter and gatherers passed down the lessons learned.
Our job is to continue to share that information with those coming up to help them grow and develop.
Mentoring s something we all can do that doesn't cost us anything but can change the world!
Resilience. Earned through time and experience. How does your tribe, your goals, your appreciation, and your health impact your ability to be more resilient? Let's discover!
Effort and intentions. They are the 2 things you need to succeed in any situation you find yourself in. Regardless of your feedback metrics, these 2 things ensure that you are progressing towards the desired end state.
An effort has nothing to do with talent. Effort is between you and you. No one else can give you that.
Effort doesn’t quit. Effort doesn’t seek a finish. Effort is relentless, in the dark, on its own. Effort doesn’t seek the approval of others. Effort can’t be given or taken away by others.
Effort is what gets shit done.
Intentions are necessary to provide your own fuel for the effort. Intentions are the goal that creates the plan that requires the effort to accomplish.
Intentions are what guide you and pull you near but without effort, intentions are just ideas and theories.
You need to understand how to apply the proper effort in order to maximize your exposure to the elements that reveal the strength you have inside.
“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is a little extra”
When you step back and evaluate, which are you? We are one or the other, or both. Sometimes we are an anchor for ourselves but a sail for others. I have been there before. I have also been the sail for myself but an anchor for others.
So what does it mean to be a sail, not an anchor? Anchors keep us in place, in one place. Sails help us move from one place to another. Sails respond to the wind. Sails are an image of freedom, of adventure, not standing still, going over the horizon into the unknown.
Sails are powered by the wind, which we have no control over. They carry us to places we may never have visited or stopped without the wind. The wind, in this situation, is others. We have many opportunities to do many things in life but if we don’t have a little “wind power”, we often can’t make it there on our own. Sails carry us into the vast expanse of the seas, where the storms rage and the waves are big. That is where we earn our sea legs.
Just like anchors, there is another side to sails as well. Some “winds” can move your sails without knowing or caring if you are ready. They don’t take the time to understand if you are ready for that push and are only seeing the pushing off the boat, not the personal growth.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Anchors are great for keeping boats and ships safe. In a protected harbor, out of the elements. Safe. Anchors are not necessarily negative or bad people. They are just complacent and hold you back from your potential. They prevent you from making change and feel finding potential growth that is deep inside you. They view mistakes as fatal flaws and thus make you afraid of what you might become if you did something different.
Conversely, anchors can be good things in your life. They can ground you because you aren’t ready to be pushed forward. They care about you enough to hold you in place so you can prepare yourself to be pushed forward.
So, how do you know which you are at this moment?
If you're the wrong kind of anchor or sail, it's really easy to change. All you have to do is realize that every person wants to improve, and if you will embrace that fact, you'll instantly figure how you can be the right kind of anchor or sail that will help them harness their winds of change to move them to the place that they want to be in the manner that they need to get there.
You are the captain of your own ship.
What does it mean to “Take the Hill”
In military terms, it is the declaration of a tactical maneuver that will include a violent assault upwards (physically) in an attempt to take the high ground. The higher ground is the tactical advantage. It could be on top of a building, a hill, a canyon rim, or a watchtower. Tactically, this is a superior advantage over being “downhill”
To take it a step further, taking the hill is a commitment to achievement, at any cost. The mission is to attain the higher ground so strategically, it is planned for. With every aggressive action in life, there are consequences. Some severe and some not but it is understood at the beginning.
How can you apply that to life?
Like the “burn the Boats” discussion, we must find something that is so tactically important to our lives that we are willing to make the sacrifices to attain it. The uphill battle is one of the toughest ones you can fight from a tactical setting but in the end, the value of the hill supersedes the known and accepted risk.
What do you have in your life that is your “hill”? What objectives do you have that are of high value?
Oftentimes, we do not see or appreciate the hills in our life that need us to stand on them. This can lead to a feeling of despair or being lost. This can lead us to just fumbling through the daily process without real meaning. From a mental health perspective, this can be very damaging to our progress and self-worth.
I like to think of goats when I think of high ground. They love to stand on things. Whatever they can get on to be higher than those around them. We have all seen those silly goat videos.
Find yourself the hill in your life and pursue it with purposeful action and an aggressive pursuit to earn it.
Be like a goat and go stand on something :)
How do you go from good to great? How do you become what you are meant to be? Going from good to great requires many things but it is attainable for anyone.

Going from good to great requires a few things but the most important one is desire. The desire to put in the reps. The desire to grow. The desire to become.
Putting in the reps
Let’s look at some of the all-time greats and try to understand why they became great. Sports is the easiest to see quickly but there are many more
Jordan, Kobe, Will Smith, Favre, Nolan Ryan, Drake, Bill Gates, Serena Williams, Elvis, Muhammad Ali, Michael Phelps, Justin Timberlake, Usain Bolt
What sets them apart? Work ethic is probably the most obvious one. Sure they all have “talent” as society defines it but we all know the quote.
“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”
There are literally millions of talented people in the world. Why do the ones on the list, or ones you think of, prevail over all of the others? There are many things but the key is the hard work. The reps. The miles. The hours. The grind.
Have you seen the Under Armor commercial with Michael Phelps? It is called “Rule Yourself”
The quote that comes from it is:
“It’s what you do in the dark that puts you in the light.”
The reps. The practice. The time in the movement of your craft.
Think about the thing that you do for business, work, and sport in your life. Think about where you started and where you are currently at. What can you attribute your growth to? Luck? Fate? Passion? Desire? Work? Focus? Sacrifice?
I bet if you wrote down the things you think helped you get where you are, the work ethic, grind, and maybe stubbornness can be attributed to a lot of your success.
Does luck play into it? It depends on what you consider luck. Do some people just get lucky? I am not so sure. In order to be able to take advantage of the thing we call luck, you have to be in a certain position to be successful when that opportunity presents itself. Just something to consider.
Perhaps I should have talked about what the difference between good and great is :)

Relationship development and the impact (good and bad) of those around you.
Invest in those relationships as they keep you grounded and give you a solid foundation for personal growth.
We have discussed it many times but it is worth reiterating. Your ability (empowerment) to be open to being vulnerable partially hinges on the circle of people around you. If you have the right people in the right places in your life, you are more open to being vulnerable and ultimately, having more growth opportunities.
I call this one “Breaking Bread” because to me that is the physical act of sitting with someone over coffee, dinner, or drinks and exploring the path, lessons, and experiences of another person. It is giving your time around a table or commonplace to connect and learn about another person.
To have the right people in the right places, you must be more invested in the growth of those around you than your own growth. Understanding relationship development is something that people have been trying to do for years. Is there a formula for it? Not really because you are dealing with logical and emotional creatures. One thing that I have found to be true in all scenarios, is to care about others more than you care about yourself. Care about their success more than your own.
Focus for the week. Do one thing to give back to someone who makes a difference in your life every single day for the next seven days. This can be a spouse, co-worker, parent, team mom on your kid’s sports team, really anyone

Seeking the why is the 2nd level of exploration. The first is appreciating and understanding that something needs to be discovered. It could be the pursuit of a new hobby, a new relationship, writing a book, or a new job.
Why is a very powerful word. How you ask why is just as important as the question itself!
My challenge to you this week is to ask why about 3 things.

Be a better me
I had someone reach out recently and the main question they wanted to ask was if I would talk about how to “be a better me”. When I read that in the email it caught me off guard at first because it didn’t make sense. Then it hit me.
This person was searching for something. They were looking for a foolproof way to “be better”. But be better at what? Being better, isn’t that just a state of self-imagery? A place that you look to see if you are different but in a progressive way?
We have all wanted to be better at some point. Better at our relationships, better in school, sports, better parents, etc. But what in the hell is being better actually? What if you are better now but just don’t see it?
So in an attempt to provide that answer let’s do a little searching. Better is being more than you were yesterday. If that is how we are going to define it then how do we measure it?
What is it that you really are seeking when you ask that question?

You have to know what you want to be better at and make it measurable so that you can actually achieve.
If you cannot define being “better”, you will be unable to change it. Period.
The word struggle is a word that when we hear, we cringe. We know the context. We know what it means to struggle.
We work very hard to ensure that our children and family don't feel the struggle. Sometimes we even put ourselves into compromising situations to make sure that those we care about don’t struggle. As a society, we have an extreme aversion to discomfort.
What if I told you that the struggle is what you need? We are all “from the struggle” whether that is your upbringing, college debt, losing a job, or a failed relationship. The struggle is what shapes us and helps us realize what is really necessary.
Struggling, and subsequently, surviving a struggle makes us feel accomplished, powerful. It makes you feel like you actually matter.

Something that causes you such great Focus that you are willing to make whatever sacrifice necessary to achieve. Something that grips you. Changes you.
When is the last time you went deep? I mean really tested yourself. Entering into it knowing that you could fail but moving forward anyway?
This weekend I was able to witness something truly incredible. I watched one individual who set such a lofty goal that is taking them multiple years to achieve it. They set out on this goal believing they could make it every single time it was their intent.
The goal, while seemingly crazy and virtually impossible for the majority of people, isn't necessarily the target of this discussion.
The intention and action towards that goal is our discussion.

I struggled to come up with a topic for today. Why? Well, I didn’t prepare properly and I, historically, Can generally put something together at the last minute. I tend to function best under pressure. But what happens when that doesn’t work out. There are many times that I just can’t slap something together. What then? What happens when your “go-to move” isn’t working?
For me, those times lead to frustration. Deeper struggle. The key to progressing forward is what I have learned to do with that struggle and frustration. I like to double down on that feeling. I hedge my bets on the process and make myself dive deeper.
I use that as fuel. Fueling me to drive harder and to dig deeper. Sometimes I have to dig a really deep hole in order to find the motivation or the answers. The deeper that I dig, the harder it is to come out of that hole but in the end, I always find but I’m looking for in there.
The struggle is what shapes me and yet it’s the thing that we tend to try to avoid, myself included. The saying goes “embrace the suck” but how often do we truly embrace it? Leaning into it is something I have talked about before but it is much easier said than done.
How do I get through the struggle:
The word struggle is a word that when we hear, we cringe. We know the context. We know what it means to struggle.
We work very hard to ensure that our children and family don't feel the struggle. Sometimes we even put ourselves into compromising situations to make sure that those we care about don’t struggle. As a society, we have an extreme aversion to discomfort.
What if I told you that the struggle is what you need? We are all “from the struggle” whether that is your upbringing, college debt, losing a job, or a failed relationship. The struggle is what shapes us and helps us realize what is really necessary.
Struggling, and subsequently, surviving a struggle makes us feel accomplished, powerful. It makes you feel like you actually matter.
I want to tell you a little story, a historical one.
Let’s talk about the year 1519.
This is the year that Hernán Corté and his men arrived on the shores of Mexico. His expedition consisted of roughly 600 Spaniards, 16 or so horses, and his 11 boats. Their goal there was to capture the magnificent treasures that they had heard stories about and conquer the lands.
In a twist of unprecedented events, Hernán announced to his men to “Burn the Boats”. This sent a clear message to his men. There is NO turning back. They will either accomplish their goal or die trying. They will either win or they will perish. This created a massive rally of his men behind him and within 2 years they succeeded in the conquest of the Aztec empire.
What should you take away from that? He sacrificed their “comfort” in the conquest. He gave up their safety net because his desire to succeed was so great. SO what should that tell you about your “comforts”
Comfort wants you to stop. Comfort tells you it’s too hard. Too hot. Too cold. Too tired. Too everything. Comfort never encourages you or tells you “go one more”. Comfort tells you it’s ok. You get a participation medal for the attempt. You tried hard.
Comfort wants you to “try”. Trying doesn’t accomplish anything for anyone. Fuck trying hard. Get hard.
Although these might make sense from the perspective of holding on to a life preserver, they minimize the likelihood of success.
The same holds true in personal relationships. We fear rejection or other undesired outcomes so we float around and don’t take the necessary risk needed to find and sustain deep, fulfilling relationships.
There are times in our life when we need to make decisions even when we are unclear about which path to travel. We gather as many facts as we can, measure the risks, and then use our best judgment and the insights of others to guide us forward. Once we make our decision, we have to be willing to stick with it and not allow fear and second-guessing to derail us. Instead of focusing on the what-ifs, concentrate on the task at hand and the steps needed to be successful.
Safety nets and escape routes can protect us from pain and injury. But they also tend to reduce the effort, focus, and commitment that we invest in a process. Once you have completed your discernment process, you have to be willing to burn the boats behind you and trust your inner voice to pursue your dreams. Never look back.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable, burn the fucking boats!
Noise. Ear pollution. Chatter. Distractions. They are all around us
Noise is a constant in life. If you are like me you can handle a lot of it, hell even thrive in it at times.
What do you do when you hit that tipping point and it gets to be too much? My default reaction is to freeze and do nothing.
I need a list of “rules” to follow to help me navigate these times. I am sharing them with you!
Your X-FACTOR is something that sets you apart from others. It is your “superpower”. Oftentimes we do not know what our X-FACTOR is until later in life. Your X-FACTOR is the thing that you can access and use daily to grow, make an impact on someone, or progress toward more success.
Understanding your X-FACTOR and accepting it is the key to growth. Did you know that once you understand what it is, you can leverage that for good?
We all know of a sports star or “famous” person who has that X-FACTOR. Jordan, Favre, Sean Connery, Will Smith, Elon Musk, etc. They all have something that makes us recognize them, in a good light. You have that same ability!
What is the one thing that you can fall back on when times get tough? Is it your ability to make people smile? Is it the fact that when it gets tough you can really focus and execute? It could be the thing that helps you to prevail in tough situations and really take advantage of that superpower
The issue is that we don’t all accept that it is something that we possess. Sometimes we don't think it’s possible that we have that. Other times, we know what it is and can really roll with it. Your job is to identify what your X-FACTOR is and find a way to leverage that to help others, grow and be successful.
We all have it, what’s yours?

Let’s break it down a bit more:
Checking your ego allows you to explore a bit more. Your EGO is trying to kill you, whether by restriction or excessive allowance
Apology opportunities are a great example of an inflated ego. Our ego wants to maintain a place of dominance. We need to operate from a position of tolerance.
Operating with a chip on your shoulder. Thinking that people do not understand you, your past, or your experiences. That is what feeds the ego.
Sit down ego, not today...
Courage
Anyone can have positivity but everything is going right. Anyone can believe when things are going right.
It takes true courage To find that positivity when things are going wrong. It takes true courage to make the moves in the decisions to help you find that positivity
The real challenge of growth comes when you get knocked down. When you have to start over again. That requires all the courage you can muster
The last chapter of your life has not been written. It doesn’t matter what the previous chapters were, you get to write that last chapter
You have to believe that you can make a difference. You have to believe that you can apply the change that you want to see
Instead of asking why, ask why not
The first step before anyone else in the world believes it, you must believe it
By definition - the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.
There is a quote out there that goes:
“Vulnerability isn’t our biggest weakness, it’s our best measure of courage”
To me, it means to open up and allow what is to be what is. To me, it is the time when you are the most susceptible to pain but the most available to growth.
Being vulnerable isn’t the easiest thing to do but it is one of the necessary pieces to grow to where we, ultimately, want to be.
To open yourself to the vulnerability you must understand how to help others be vulnerable.

What is Resilience? How do you define resilience? It may mean something a little different to everyone.
To me, it means whatever durability you have earned over the years through our experience of wins and losses. There are few things that are guaranteed in life but one thing you can count on is the opportunity to earn resilience.
When we have a situation that doesn’t work out or goes against what we thought we deserve, we see that as a setback. I want to help you reframe that. We need to teach ourselves to see that as an opportunity to get a little tougher. A little harder. More durable. A little more resilient.
We cannot avoid the setbacks in life as they are much a part of life as the process of breathing air daily. They will be in your life and be around the corner waiting for you. These are the lessons of life. These are your chances to grow.
Some of them will hurt more than others. Some are self-inflicted and some are just a circumstance of the situation. No matter the situation, it is a chance for you to grow.
Resilience is a hard thing to appreciate and understand because it isn’t easy or fun but completely necessary to attain anything you desire to earn. It is unavoidable in life and crucial to your development so find a way to accept it and invite the opportunities. They are key to your success.
How do you become more patient? Take a breath and be grateful for what you have. THAT will empower you into the gift of more patience….
Patience. What a tricky little thing to get a grasp on much less to understand how it even works or is earned. In theory, this seems simple. Just wait for things to develop and “BAM” there they are, just as you wanted.
No way. No freaking way. That is so far from the actuality of earning patience or being patient. Not to even mention that society isn’t really doing us any favors. Amazon prime, movies on demand, door dash/uber eats, and the list goes on. More now than ever we can have the things we want in almost no time.
Remember in bygone years...Let’s go back there for a moment. You had to order something by submitting an order form and a check (what is that?) for the price plus shipping and handling. Then, and only then, could you wait 6-8 weeks for delivery? That was forever, or so it seemed.
Were we more patient then? No, we were not so maybe it isn’t a “society” thing. Maybe it’s a human thing. Humans are so perfectly imperfect yet highly trainable and adaptable. Yes, trainable and adaptable. We can learn, develop, and grow. That means that we CAN learn to be more patient.
I bet you are saying “Duh, why don’t you tell us something actually helpful?”
Is patience really as simple as “Breath in and Breathe out”? No, it is not. It takes practice, repetitions, and losing it to understand how to have it.
The 3 keys that I use to help me balance it out when I have an opportunity:
Now, these are not hard and fast rules but they work when it comes to the point where I need to determine how patient I need to be.
What is the best way to learn patience? Start with yourself. Are you willing to be patient with yourself? Allow yourself the room to grow, succeed, win, and lose. When you start to become more patient with yourself, you then will start to develop the skills to be more patient with others.
By definition, it is the action or process of making ready or being made ready for use or consideration.
By being prepared for as many possible outcomes the world can offer, when life takes an unexpected turn, you will be ready to handle the tasks at hand. The expectation is a tricky concept. You might expect something to go well and it comes crashing down, or vice versa. There is a healthy balance in the art of preparation.
Preparation can be the foundation of your future success or the bain of your existence. You really have to look at what preparation truly means, to you, as an individual. We all have our own definitions based on the way we were raised, our personalities, and our priorities.
Ben Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”. I cannot come up with a more valid and powerful statement to express the control preparation, or lack thereof can have on our lives
Preparation can help with so many issues that many people do not see. Anxiety, fear, stress, poor sleep, and mental fatigue. Preparation requires planning and prioritization of goals and desires. Often times, things like anxiety and fear can come from a subconscious awareness that we might not be as ready, or prepared, as we should be. That, in turn, feeds into self-confidence and the “I am not good enough” monster. This is a road you want to avoid as much as possible.
While preparation isn’t the “magic pill” that will help you overcome your mental struggles, it is a KEY piece to the foundation that you must have. A good foundation is a true base to build your house on.
No one is born without it, however, different life circumstances and challenges cause us to question it and “misplace” it. I would like to repeat, we are all born with it. We never lose it. We just misplace it. It is always there but needs to be built, fed and taken care of.
Confidence can be earned and built in a myriad of ways. Athletic and business performances, other people’s comments/thoughts of us, our relationships, comfort within ourselves, personal and professional accomplishments and many other ways.
Confidence can also be “taken” away by athletic and business performances, other people’s comments/thoughts of us, our relationships, comfort within ourselves, personal and professional accomplishments and many other ways.
See the opportunity here? What can give us confidence can also be what causes us to misplace it. So how do we balance that out to the more positive side? You MUST make sure that what gives you confidence is self reliant. You MUST remove/tune out the things that you do not have some control of. That is where the true challenge lies.
Confidence can be a fickle little thing but a very powerful tool to truly controlling your life and being your sidekick in kicking ass!
Now that we have a better acceptance of who we are from a confidence perspective, let’s look at the tools you need to grow and nourish it.
Let’s look at the Rules of Confidence:
Well, we just identified what confidence is, understood the opportunities and pitfalls of it and outlined the Rules of Confidence. That is a great start but how do we actually do anything about it? How do we create a strategy to grow and nourish it so that it is more of a friend than an enemy? It is one thing to understand what’s going on but I want to give you the tools to add to your Mental Toolkit to change and support your habits!
Where to start with the thoughts of my dad and the lessons that I learned from him. We all have a parent or role model in our life that left a lasting impact that we may not have realized in the moment or even within the recent times of those impacts.
My dad was an extremely hard worker. For all of my life I can remember him working in a factory of some sort or a machine shop. From what I knew dad was an extremely talented machinist and also had a work ethic that was second to none. Looking back now I realized that some of my frustration as a young adult with my dad and the perception of his lack of being at certain important events for me was misguided. As I see it now it was because both of my parents I was able to do the things that I did such as play baseball and go to summer camps.
My dad would work 6 or 7 days a week and take just about any overtime shift he could get to provide for us so that we could go camping, have a pool and live on a nice little piece of land. As I grew older my dad and I grew apart. A lot of it was because he was a stubborn ass old man, or so I thought, and like most kids, thought I was always right.
To say my relationship with my father was rocky and tumultuous was probably an understatement. It seemed it was very much an on-again-off-again relationship between the two of us that was built around frustration, lack of patience, misguided anger and a general misunderstanding of each other.
Sadly I did not realize this until the last month of his life when I was able to spend possibly the most quality time I've ever spent with him. On one hand it saddens me that it took me that long to get the fuck over myself and get to know him a little better. On the other hand it makes me happy that I actually had that opportunity.
Looking back now, what is it that my dad really taught me?
Dad was not always the type to pick you up and give you a hug and tell you he was proud of you, he was more of a leader than I realized. A lot of the things that I learned from him came from observing and listening not from feeling and experiencing.
In the last month of my Dad's life I learned some of the most important lessons I possibly have ever learned. Not through him telling me but through him showing me.
I learned about patience due to the process of hospitals and having a very aggressive form of cancer. I learned about compassion as I watched the nursing staff and family take care of him and ultimately he tried to the best of his ability to take care of himself. I learn more about resilience watching him getting stuck with all the needles and ultimately continuing down the path amidst the pain it took. I learned about always being the captain of your own Ship by watching him make the decision to go home. I told him when he was ready to go home we would get him home. He fought very hard but he finally got to the point where he took control and said enough was enough and that he wanted to be home. It served as a very firm reminder that no matter how bad of a situation you must always be the captain of your own ship
I watched a man who could turn a rusty Bolt with the quick flick of his wrist on the old Jeep Wagoneer that we had, struggling with most basic tasks like removing a lid from a bottle. For me that helps me understand what true strength is. So another lesson I learned was what true strength is from Dad.
In life we have the opportunity every single day to learn some type of lesson. It is not the lessons that we learn, but it is the way we Implement those lessons into our life that really signifies growth.
THE LESSON:
We can take any person we know and spin them in a good light and a bad light and it is never my intention to spin people in a bad light. My dad was not a perfect person, and he and I didn’t have a perfect relationship. He hid the fact that he was dying from me and my brother. There’s a lot at play that people don’t know about.
What I've noticed a lot these past couple weeks is people stress has been reallocated. A very wise, wise friend of mine, Adrian, told me one time when I was kind of stressing about some stuff. When I was starting a failing business or a business ended up failing, they told me he said, Man, he said, There there is a finite amount of stress in the world. It's going to go somewhere you'll never be without it. You will always have some form of stress, he said. The key is you gotta figure out which stresses worth absorbing and dealing with. And which dress must you let go to reallocate that somewhere else? And so that's always stuck with me because to me, it makes sense because if, for example, if you're stressed about money, well, if you're stressed about money, you're not stressed about your health, you're not stressed about your kids having a good life or you're not stressed about your job, you know?
So there are different buckets to replace to stress in. I think that what we're going through right now is the stress has been reallocated from the things that were quote-unquote normal 23 months ago, you know, to more basic almost more primitive stressors like Okay, is it safe to go get groceries right? When should I go get groceries? When there's gonna be fewer people at the store, so on and so forth. And so, you know, I think that what really stood out to me this whole time is stress. And so what I want to talk a little bit about is that is, is how do we factor what stresses in our life, get our attention and get our time and get our energy right?
Right now we're gonna talk about feedback and you say, I wrote on the board in big, bold letters behind me and, you know, this came about from a conversation yesterday. The Kendall. Now we're having. And I realized that feedback is very, very important. And we all know that whether it's it at work or whether it's, you know, with a spouse or with kids or with your training or with any of that stuff, we have to have feedback to grow.
The quote that I found just looking this morning is it says it takes humility to seek feedback. It takes wisdom to, understand it to analyze it and appropriately act on it. That's a pretty powerful statement. You gotta be humble in order to receive the feedback that someone's gonna have. You know, sometimes it's constructive criticism. Sometimes it's just as a column, haters, just people saying stuff, just trash talk. But at the end of the day, it's very important to have that feedback because that's how we grow. That's how we develop. Is knowing was this good or bad? Did this get executed properly? You know, Was everything in line the way that should be?
So how does a goal give us control? Well I never thought you’d ask. To start….Let’s break down just how to set and execute the goal.

Outcome goals, performance goals and process goals.
Accomplishment of goals gives us control, confidence and more reason to grow!

Adversity seems to be something we are up against daily. We were born for adversity. Hell you were born into adversity if you really think about it. So why does it bog us down when we hit a tough time like what we're going through right now? Why do we seem to really overthink the simple things that are directly in front of us? Sometimes we seem to freeze It is the unknown that really gets to us. The uncertainty. The what ifs. The loss of control What if I told you that it is in these times that you really get a clear picture of what you actually can control. Think about it. There are many things in our current situation that you cannot control. The things that you can do are VERY obvious. Easy peasy. Execute on those few things and execute on them well and the adversity becomes an ally. An OPPORTUNITY! Take ADVANTAGE of the adversity as it is the prime time to grow and learn! Don’t run from it, run to it!

Let’s discuss the “Opportunity to win” What does that mean? Naturally, we seek out the vision of the road ahead and see the tough times and stress points. I want to reshape that thought process a bit. This week, I want you to seek out the “Opportunities to Win” that lie ahead of you. Where are those potential moments or times that you could squeak out a little more. Maybe it is another rep in the gym, 10 extra minutes on that work project or 30 extra minutes with your kids or family. Where are those times in your week? We all have them. Often times we overlook those times by saying phrases like “I don’t have time” or “I couldn’t get to that”. There are times that it is harder to actually accomplish things but every single week, there are times that we fail to capitalize on. What are some common pitfalls and opportunities in a normal week for the average person? Here are my top 5: 1. Facebook/Social Media 2. Commutes to and from work 3. Lunch breaks at work 4. 30-60 minutes before bed time 5. Hours before you leave for work
In just those few examples I bet you have already identified the opportunities that you currently have available in your life that you can start to create new habits that will help you grow and thrive! Seek out those wins! They are there for the taking if you so choose!
What exactly is an energy person? You think in terms of basketball there's always that one guy or girl that is flying around the court throwing their body on the ground trying to get every loose ball or every rebound. If you think about a dance floor there's always that one person that shows out a bit more than the others around. Why is that? Have you ever wondered that? Some of us are just wired to be full of energy and full of life. And some of us really have to work at it to ride that energy and bring that fire day in and day out.
We each have a choice every single day of our lives. This week I want you to really focus on taking advantage of the times that we get to choose how we react. We get to choose which path we will follow and we get to choose to keep driving our knees and pumping our feet in our Relentless pursuit of forward progression
Mountains are hard. They are meant to be climbed but they are hard. A mountain, to you may be just that. A literal, physical mountain. Maybe to you it's a test you have to study for, a board you need to pass, raising young kids or just getting home to make dinner for the family. When you think of the mountain, you think struggle. You think difficulty or who knows what other synonyms you can come up with. With these mountains, you don't always see the summit but it's there. And you CAN reach it! But the mountains are meant to be hard. Their reward is worth having but you will hurt and sweat to get it.
Here is a little “life hack”, as kids these days call it, for you! Starting your day the right way is very important. Whether it is with a good breakfast (or just coffee..because we all know the power of that magic juice), getting plenty of sleep, an exercise routine or just waking up the “right way” to start it off. I know what you are saying. Yah Yah I know all of that, why is it actually “important”? Listen in to the WHY!
New Year's Day. It is an amazing time of excitement and anticipation with a dash of reflection. Every year it seems to be one day that we all anticipate a lot. It is the one day that we reflect back on what the past has helped us with as well optimistically looking forward to what the new year will present to us. In a sense it is almost a freeing day where the world seems like a canvas and our ideas are the paint. Why is that day so magical? Why is that day one where we appreciate the journeys of the previous year while accepting the hard times of that year presented us with. We set forth with these resolutions of what we're going to do the upcoming year even if we didn't nail all the resolutions from the last year.
I want you to be obsessive. To do that let's really look at what it means. By definition obsesses a verb which means preoccupy or fill the mind of something or someone continually intrusively and to a troubling extent.How can that be a good thing for us?
How many times have you done something with the best of intentions only for it to blow up in your face? I mean I truly believe that most people have the best of intentions. I mean, don't get me wrong, there are people out there who intend ill will but I think the majority of people have good intentions. The thing that I seem to struggle with is no matter how good of intentions I may have when I go to communicate that it doesn't always come out the way I assumed it to. One of my personal struggles is to make sure that my intentions are received in the way that I mean them. That may seem a bit confusing so let me break it down for you.
Do you know those days where everything seems to go right? You know the ones I'm talking about. The ones we're almost seems like you had the video game cheat code on life if just for that day. Those are easy to get a lot of stuff done, feel good about yourself and really be genuinely excited about whatever it is that you're doing. Those are the easy days. Let's explore how to get more cheat codes!
Did you know that scientists estimate we have between 50 and 70,000 thoughts per day. That is a form of self talk. Obviously we don’t recognize every thought that enters the mind. That subconscious mind is a talented little thing.

When it rains outside or has rained do you often find yourself avoiding walking through or running through the puddles? Why is that? I think it's because wet shoes and socks are just plain uncomfortable. Most of the time being uncomfortable is not a ton of fun, am I right?
More often than not, we just lie to ourselves. It is very easy to tell yourself a little white lie just a few times and then you actually start to believe it. Once you believe it you start to become it. When you become it, it will generate unhappiness. That unhappiness then leads you to lie to yourself about other things. It is a crazy vicious cycle that is very hard to break
When you look in the mirror, who is there staring back at you? Is this the same person that was staring at you a month ago, a year ago or 5 years ago? Are the changes you see good or bad? Most people look at themselves with a very skewed perspective. Really an unfair one if we're being honest. We look at ourselves and speak to ourselves in a way that is not positive and encouraging.
Let's talk about controlling the moment. Become a champion of that moment. What do I mean by that? Stop worrying about the things that are so far ahead of you you cannot control them and make sure you really own and execute in the current moment you are sitting in.
Don’t stop starting. I started this podcast yesterday 8 different times but I just could not find the groove or the flow. And I got super frustrated with that. It should just happen when I wanted to happen right? What was a great thing that the Universe reminded me that I'm not really ever in control. Like ever....
Hard is a state of being. Hard is an opportunity. Rise into it and lean in or back away. Both choices will teach you something. Seek out the hard stuff and attack it!
People are just too damn comfortable. We like a sit back in our comfortable houses with our nice things and enjoy the ride of the success that we've earned to that point. That's comfort. And while it's not always a bad thing. However, It is a huge limiter for our continued growth and development. What are some of the problems you face daily or weekly? Perhaps they come from the fact that you're unwilling to push the envelope because it's uncomfortable. It's painful, it hurts, it's not fun, it requires sacrifice.
