There are a lot of misconceptions around back pain, but I feel this must be one of the most powerful ones.
Understanding plays a huge role in recovery. If you believe someone else will fix you, you will be in trouble. Therefore, clearing up any problems around what could be going on is important. In this episode we discuss why fear of back pain is a huge problem, understanding the anatomy of the disk and how it heals. We also discuss why what you've tried in the past hasn't worked.

Learn your pain pattern: Back Pain Diagnostic Quiz
If your back pain keeps coming back no matter what you try, you might be treating the wrong problem.
In this episode, we break down why traditional approaches like physio, scans, rest, and generic exercises often fail to create lasting change. Most people are told their pain is coming from a disc, posture, or structural issue but research shows that many people with the same findings have no pain at all. So what's really going on?
You'll learn why your pain keeps flaring up, how the nervous system plays a major role in chronic back pain, and why focusing only on the body isn't enough. We also cover how to rebuild movement confidence, break the fear cycle, and start progressing again without constantly setting yourself back.
If you're stuck in a loop of short-term relief, confusion, and frustration, this episode will help you understand why nothing has worked, and what to do instead.
This is where real recovery starts.

A powerful mindset shift to help you manage chronic pain, reduce flare ups, and feel more in control.
We dive into the concept of offloading vs recovery - two very different but essential tools for managing pain and energy. I share a recent conversation after a surf session that sparked this idea, and how it relates to nervous system regulation, emotional build up, the need for hobbies, community, and nature.
You’ll learn: • How to tell if you need to recover or offload • Why pain builds up even when you're “doing everything right” • How burnout, stress, and lifestyle contribute to flare ups • Why movement, creativity, and expression are essential for healing • How to reconnect to your body and calm your system
This is one of the most important reframes I teach inside my Back Pain Back to Exercise program and one that’s helped hundreds regain confidence in their body and life.

Here we discuss the impact blame can have on our health and happiness and the control we give it over circumstances.
I speak on my own recent experience of blaming an injury for not participating in an activity. Afterwards, when I looked at it deeper though it had much more to do with me being uncomfortable in the situation than it did the injury.
This happens to us all and if it goes unchecked it can have a real impact on our lives.
In this episode of the podcast, I reflect on my time spent growing up in the pub & restaurant as well as the different type of people that used to come in. I noticed in there that there was a huge difference between those who aged "poorly" and the ones who were aging healthy.
Much of it had to do with the mindset they had towards life.

In this episode, we're diving into the curious world of sham surgeries in research and what they can teach us.
Imagine a surgeon walking a patient through every step of a procedure, but no actual changes happen in the targeted area. What's fascinating is the profound impact this seemingly "pretend" surgery can have on a patient's pain levels and overall function—both right after the mock surgery and in the crucial follow-up months.
What would this teach us about pain?
Are some surgeries just a mock?
Do you actually need surgery, or is there something you can do instead?

In this podcast episode, we dive into the shift from summer to winter and its impact on our well-being. It's common for many to find the winter stretch challenging, eagerly counting the days until spring and summer return. This often leaves us feeling trapped, directionless, and in a mood slump.
However, we want to give you a different perspective on how you can approach the next couple of months so that in time you will begin to favour the winter for a different reason.
It's all about perspective and how we view our world, therefore, if we can adopt a world-view that allows us to challenge ourselves and take advantage of every season, we don't become as lost or feel stuck in that state of "limbo" while we wait for the winter to pass.

I discuss what a holistic approach includes, how to start looking at your health holistically as well as simple tips to improve health overall.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss load and what contributes to it. Load is anything that stresses / stimulates the body. Therefore if we don't understand what is weighing down on us we will constantly be stuck in a state of fatigue without knowing where to turn.
Many people only think of physical training when assessing their load. However, there are multiple other factors in your life that will sap your energy, each presenting a slight bit differently.
I break down the different forms of load, what contributes to fatigue as well as how you can work on each to improve.
In this episode of the podcast we discuss the affect of breathing on back pain and back flare-ups. Before a back flare up occurs there is usually a sequence of events that contribute to it.
One of these is a change in our breathing pattern. If we don't become aware of this breathing pattern and how to change it we can get caught in a cycle of recurring pain & tightness.
I explore why breathing should be an important aspect of your rehab plan, why it is such an issue with back pain specifically and how you can utilise different breathing patterns to have better outcomes with recurring injury.

In this episode of the podcast I discuss how reframing the idea of a flare-up can be an effective way to make progress. In general a recurring injury flare-up happens when our body kicks back, whether that be a result of too much load or general fatigue.
This may present as a significant increase in pain, tightness or muscle spasm around an area. At times this can have quite an effect on your confidence and make you feel like your back at square one or have reinjured an area.
In this episode of the podcast I explore what a flare-up actually is, why changing our thought patterns are important as well as how we can reframe our experience to use it to our advantage.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss when is the right time to start to rehabilitate an injury. With injury rehab I often see people doing too little too late, or too much too early. Making these simple mistakes can delay your return to sport and may increase your risk of reinjury.
We explore what rehabilitation is and should consist of, difference between rehab & performance, main problems made when rehabilitating, how you may be delaying your return to activity as well as when do you need to start working on rehab after an injury.

In this episode of the podcast I discuss quality-of-life & improving overall well-being. Well-being by definition is the state of being comfortable, health & happy.
When it comes to improving anything in the body we need to become more aware of it. It's very difficult to change something you're not aware of.
Unfortunately at times people get caught in a cycle of negative behaviours & attitudes. This can contribute to higher levels of pain, low mood & low motivation.
In this episode I discuss why it is important to practice well-being on a daily basis, the effects of well-being on healing & recovery as well as different strategies to incorporate it into your day.
In this episode of the podcast I was delighted to welcome on Shane Finn (@ShaneFinn) to discuss the mindset, purpose, challenges & training of an ultra endurance athlete.

He has also biked & run across the USA, starting in California and finishing in New York in 36 days, all for charity.
We discuss coping strategies used to keep him on track, set-backs & injuries sustained along the way, toughest obstacles to overcome and how this has changed his outlook on life since.
Check it out now!
In this episode of the podcast I discuss the signs of fatigue. The body will always tell you when you're doing too much. Becoming aware of these signs is key to reducing your risk of injury & illness.
In season athletes tend to focus too much on training and forget about the recovery aspect of training. Without adequate recovery the body never gets a chance to adapt appropriately to the stress placed upon it.
I explore what causes the body to break down, is overtraining an issue in amateur athletes and when is it time to schedule a recovery period. I also provide you a unique test to assess whether you are fully recovered or not from the previous day.

In the episode of the podcast I was delighted to welcome on Dr Perry Nickelston (@stopchasingpain) to discuss all things holistic health.
We explore how emotions affect our physical body, as well as why it is so important to address beliefs & attitudes when looking at the health of someone.
The physical & psychological health & wellbeing of someone can not be separated and assessed individually as one will always affect the other.
The idea that no system works in isolation was a common theme running throughout this podcast.
Dr Nickelston goes into detail on how one system such as the lymphatic system can alter another like the immune system.
This podcast is for anyone interested in learning more about how systems in the body interact as well as how our mind & thought patterns affect our physical health.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss why a positive mindset is such an important part of the rehab process. Many people don't understand the effect of what a positive mindset can do for the body.
As no system works in isolation it is important to really take a holistic approach to rehab, especially when dealing with a long term, recurring injury.
I go into detail on how a negative mindset can be disastrous during the rehab process both physically & mentally. I then explore the idea of keeping a positive/optimistic mindset as well as how you can introduce it in your training & life.
In this episode of the podcast we take a look at injury flare-ups. A back or shoulder flare-up generally feels as though it is a random occurrence. However, there are usually multiple changes in lifestyle factors and routine that contribute to the initial increase in pain & tightness.
We explore what actually is a injury flare-up, why are some areas affected more than others, as well as what causes a flare-up and what you can do to prevent them.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss progressive overload & how it fits into a mobility training context.
Physical & mental training is based on the principal of stimulus/stress & adaption.
If a novel stimulus is placed on a part of the body, it will adapt to be better able to cope with that load in future, if given time to recover.
Once a new stress appears the cycle repeats - this in its essence is progressive overload.
We explore the benefits of using progressive overload when mobility training as well as the goals & effects it has on different systems and tissues in the body. Mistakes commonly seen when mobility training & applying overload are also discussed.

I explore common mistakes made during the rehab process that may increase risk as well as how you can reduce your risk of suffering the same injury repeatedly.
This week's podcast was focused around using massage guns for recovery purposes. I discuss the research around massage guns for performance and recovery as well as what the proposed benefits are.
I explore the effectiveness of massage guns in different situations as well as are you increasing your risk of injury by using them at the wrong time.
This episode is for anyone who uses a massage gun or foam roller and wants to get a better idea of when is the most effective time to use it, as well as when you may want to reconsider using one.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss what should be included in a prehab / injury prevention program. Prehab in its essence is taking time to build on areas that have been previously injury or areas that are at risk of injury due to the sport / activity you participate in.
Spending weeks on the sideline looking in at a game is not a position anyone wants to be in, especially with the shortened season and competition for places in a team sport.
I explore the difference between in-season & off-season injury prevention training, timing of sessions, as well as what components of fitness should be included in a program.
This one is for anyone who has previously been hampered with injuries in season and wants to get the best out of this year.
In this episode of the podcast I chat with Performance Nutritionist Damian O'Sullivan (@damonutrition).
We explore different nutritional strategies for people returning to sport after lockdown, fuelling for performance and optimising recovery.
We also discuss some of the myths & misconceptions around nutrition for sports and what supplements, if any, can you take to improve performance.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss returning to training after lockdown.
Many people fall into the same habits year in year out leading them to the same injuries leaving them sidelined for most of the season.
I explore the idea of load management in more detail as well as how to avoid burning the candle from both ends and significantly increasing risk of injury.
I discuss mistakes commonly made by players when returning to play, moreover what can be done to reduce risk of injury.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss hamstring injuries as well as what should be included in a prehab or prevention program.
Recurring hamstring injuries are one of the most common complaints of field sport athletes. Once injured, if not taken care of, you can find yourself spending the majority of the season out rehabbing the same injury.
Although it is difficult to completely prevent any injury, it is possible to significantly reduce the risk of reinjury.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss why hamstring injuries are so common, what teams are doing wrong and how they may be increasing risk as well as how you can reduce risk of injury in season.
In this free flow episode of the podcast I sat down with Eoin Dobbin (@eoindobbincoaching) to discuss all things life, health, training, setting up an online business & much more.
We decided to chat with no specific plan and it turned out to be an extremely valuable episode in terms of setting up your life to suit your goals & values.
We also discuss how the biological, psychological & social aspects affect your life can affect health & wellbeing.
In this episode of the podcast we focus on DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). Everyone has suffered with DOMS at some stage, whether it be after your first time back in the gym or after a long run or hike. It can leave you feeling stiff & sore and in some cases delay peoples return to exercise.
We explore what DOMS are, what causes it as well as why do we get them, is it okay to continue to train with DOMS or should you stop & recover and what can you do to reduce the effects of DOMS.
This episode is for anyone who will be increasing the intensity of their workouts over the next couple of months.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss the effect of breathing patterns on our stress response. I explore how certain patterns will increase our susceptibility to having high stress levels and reduce our ability to recover while others can actually downregulate the stress response and improve recovery.
Topics covered include what stress is to our body, how breathing affects stress and simple techniques to downregulate the stress response.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss balance & proprioceptive training.
Balance is fundamental to performance and life. However, even though we know it is something that is essential for body control it is something we rarely train.
Poor postural control & coordination can increase risk of injury in sporting individual and risk of falls in older populations.
In this episode we explore why balance training is important, how can we train balance and why specificity is so important when it comes to improving this skill.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss injuries & injury prevention.
Muscle & ligament injuries can set us back weeks & months during a season not to mention the cost of consultant & physio fees.
We explore the idea of injury prevention & prehab, answering questions such as is it possible to prevent certain injuries or are some of us just high risk? Furthermore, what increases ones risk of injury and can they do anything about it?
In this episode of the podcast I speak to a good friend Lorcan Daly (@Gaelic_games_research) about GAA recovery protocols.
Lorcan is currently a PhD candidate in Athlone Institute of Technology with a focus on strength & conditioning and recovery protocols in GAA players. In this episode of the podcast I discuss preventing some of the side effects associated with working from home.
As our environment is consistent throughout the day, moving from desk to couch, it can be difficult for people to build routines. Over time this can have quite the effect on our mental & physical health. Pain & tightness creep in and we begin to feel stressed, fatigued & unmotivated.
I discuss simple tips you can use to help overcome these effects and improve your mental & physical health.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss why taking a holistic approach to health is essential for longevity. I talk on the difference between looking at an issue (e.g. movement) locally or taking a global, holistic approach.
A holistic approach is a comprehensive, whole look at a persons life taking into account how different factors may be contributing to an injury/illness.
I take a look at it from a practitioners point of view before discussing how you can implement this approach into your own life.

Meditation is a powerful mental training tool to improve concentration, productivity, creativity and performance. The ancient practice of meditation has been mixed in through many religions in different forms - prayer, breathing, mantra. The idea of stilling the mind and focusing on a point is much the same throughout though.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss the benefits of meditation. I don't only speak on the ones people say they feel, but the actual changes that happen in your brain after meditating, and how these connect to the reported, subjective benefits that people notice. The brain physically adapts to meditation, it reorganises & reforms to improve your ability to focus, be calm & be present.
Furthermore, I go into detail on how I started my practice, the difficulties I had before, what I focus on during and tips to help you get started.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss breathing habits & respiration rate. Most of us don't take much note of how we breath. However poor breathing habits can have an effect on our health, wellbeing & even our sexual performance.
Why is breathing through your mouth so bad for your health? Why is nictric oxide good for my health? Where in the body is nitric oxide produced and how can I take advantage of that? How are my breathing habits affecting my stress levels? I go through answers for each of the above in this episode.
I discuss how over-breathing can affect your health and recovery. As well as different techniques to improve your ability to breath and utilise all of the oxygen consumed.
This episode is for anyone who is involved in sports/exercise, is over stressed or wants to gain that edge on their performance.

In this episode of the Mobility Experiment I discusses the pain experience. A sensation all of us feel & experience but few of us understand what may be contributing to our pain. In this episode I detail the history of pain, from our ancestors knowledge to our understanding of it now. I discuss factors affecting pain, how to reduce it. This episode also discusses factors that may be contributing to pain as well as the physiological changes that happen in persistent/chronic pain.
What do you feel is the reason you consistently get pain in the same areas e.g. lower back/shoulder? Have you stopped to consider what is going on in your life at the moment and how that may be affecting it?
