🎧 Episode Description (Show Notes) In this episode of It's Not That Hard to Homeschool, veteran homeschool educator Lisa Nehring (of True North Academy) breaks down one of the most confusing parts of homeschooling high school: credits and transcripts.

  • How do I make my teen's homeschool transcript look "official"? —then you're in the right place.

Lisa shares her 20+ years of experience helping homeschool families around the world prepare transcripts that open doors — to college, military service, conservatories, and scholarships. She covers how to: ✅ Track and calculate credits using Carnegie units ✅ Weigh courses like Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment ✅ Organize your transcript by year or subject ✅ Include extracurriculars, service hours, and awards ✅ Use addendum pages strategically for standout accomplishments

She also gives insider tips from her years reviewing transcripts in higher education and explains how to create a transcript that tells the story of your student's achievements — the kind that admissions officers love to read.

Episode Title: When You Don’t Know What’s Next: Preparing Your High Schooler for the Next Season

Host: Lisa Nehring Brought to you by: CTC Math — the stress-free, self-paced homeschool math program for every learner.

Episode Summary What happens when your high schooler doesn’t know what’s next—and honestly, neither do you? In this episode, Lisa Nehring shares heartfelt wisdom drawn from her own experience of transition: selling her family home after 22 years and entering a new season of life. Just as a home must be prepared before it’s ready for new owners, our teens can prepare for their future—even when the destination isn’t clear yet.

Lisa helps parents shift from being “taskmasters” to “project managers,” guiding the big picture of high school with intention and peace. She breaks down four key skill areas every teen needs before graduation—academic foundations, digital fluency, financial and career readiness, and social-emotional intelligence—along with four types of transcripts that align with their goals: trades and tech, college prep, honors/dual degree, and entrepreneurship.

This episode will help you stop stressing about predicting the future and start preparing your teen to be ready when opportunity comes.

Key Takeaways * You don’t need to know what’s next to start preparing for it. * Shift from being a taskmaster (focused on daily assignments) to a project manager (focused on the big picture). * The four categories of preparation:

1. Core Academic Foundations — communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration.

What if finding a few like-minded families near you were as easy as dropping a pin on a map? In this episode, Lisa chats with Morgan Bergstrom—former corporate recruiter, mom of three (soon four!), and creator of BaseCampEd, a free app that helps homeschool and alt-ed families connect locally. Morgan shares her family’s journey from full-time daycare to kindergarten at home, the moment the “mini co-op” idea clicked, and why connection—not perfection—keeps families thriving. We talk hybrid options, micro-schools, nature schools, and why you don’t have to go “all in” on day one. If you’re homeschool-curious (or already homeschooling and craving real-life community), this one’s for you.

In This Episode * Morgan’s pivot from 12 years in corporate recruiting to entrepreneurship * The origin story of BaseCampEd (and why it’ll always be free for parents) * Moving every 2–3 years: building community fast in a new city * Hybrid/alt-ed options: co-ops, micro-schools, nature & farm schools, STEM programs * How to “test drive” homeschooling without going all-in * Socialization myths vs. real connection * Why homeschooling pairs naturally with entrepreneurship

Key Takeaways * You don’t need 100 people—just a few good families you connect with. * Try before you leap: add a small reading/math kit after dinner or on weekends. * Use tools (like BaseCampEd) to find local groups, events, and alt-ed resources. * Give your kids the gift of time: true literacy & critical thinking don’t require 6 hours at a table.

Quotables * “I wanted a Zillow for homeschoolers: pull up a map, click the dots, read profiles, and connect.” —Morgan * “You don’t have to be ‘all in’ on day one. Start small and see how your child resonates.” —Morgan * “Homeschooling opens doors to alternative work and entrepreneurship.” —Lisa

Homeschool language arts… but make it magical.

In this episode, Lisa chats with Joshua Davidson, creator of Night Zookeeper—a story-driven, gamified ELA program where kids invent creatures, build worlds, and level up writing, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and more. With real tutors, smart scaffolding, and a gentle, visually stunning interface, Night Zookeeper helps reluctant writers become confident storytellers—and gives fluent writers a global community to share their work.

What you’ll learn * How creativity fuels literacy: kids design characters, then naturally want to write, revise, and share. * Built-in scaffolding: age-appropriate prompts and supports progress from picture-choice sentences to full paragraphs and essays. * Immediate feedback (from a penguin!): friendly, low-friction corrections keep momentum high. * Safe, moderated community: every post is reviewed by humans; parent controls let you dial features up or down. * Comprehensive ELA: reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, poetry, persuasive and report writing—guided by quests or sandbox play. * Tutor feedback: real people encourage, coach, and celebrate wins. * Grows with your learner: ages ~5–11 with pathways for beginners and advanced storytellers. * Cross-platform access: computers and tablets; iPhone available now, Android app coming.

How Night Zookeeper works (quick tour) 1. Create a character (unicorn-rainbow besties with a crisp packet named Bill? yes.). 2. Tell the story with prompts that match skill level. 3. Get feedback—from tutors, peers, and the professorial penguin. 4. Build skills via gamified lessons and the new Quests mode (a structured route through the curriculum). 5. Share & celebrate inside a fully moderated, kid-safe community.

Safety & parental controls * All student work is reviewed by human tutors before it’s public. * Feature controls for families (e.g., limit community features for younger children). * Optional “bubble mode” if you want a solo experience.

Pro tips from Joshua * Create the first animal together. That one shared moment super-charges buy-in. * Try the 7-day free trial, then (if you love it) consider the companion Night Zookeeper books for easy independent reading.

Who this episode is for * Parents of reluctant writers who need a joyful on-ramp. * Word-loving kids who want a bigger audience for their stories. * Families seeking a complete, kid-safe ELA solution that actually gets used.

Equip your teen for the future! Julia Jinks shares how career exploration builds clarity, confidence, and real-world skills in high school.

Sponsored by CTCMath.com

How do you help your teen discover a career path that actually fits who they are—and saves them years of wasted time and money? In this episode, I sit down with Julia Jinks to talk about the power of intentional career exploration during the high school years.

Julia shares why one short meeting with a career counselor can’t compare to a semester-long class that gives teens the tools, resources, and space to dig into their strengths, interests, and values. We discuss:

✅ Why most students can only name a handful of jobs—and how that limits their options ✅ Using tools like Myers-Briggs and the Holland Code to uncover hidden strengths and career matches ✅ Helping teens think about lifestyle goals alongside career choices ✅ Preparing students for jobs that don’t even exist yet (hello, 4th Industrial Revolution!) ✅ The value of job shadowing, informational interviews, and digital portfolios ✅ How entrepreneurship, emerging economies, and soft skills all play into future readiness

Julia also walks us through how her class equips teens with real-world skills—like resume writing, professional interviews, and self-leadership—that prepare them for whatever comes next.

If you’ve ever worried about your teen “figuring it out” too late in the game, this episode will give you both hope and a practical roadmap for meaningful career exploration.

Episode Snapshot College costs are soaring, ideological climates are shifting, and more students than ever are graduating late—or not at all—with mountains of debt. In this candid info-session, Lisa Nehring (director of True North Academy) unpacks the “college dilemma” and lays out two practical alternatives:

  1. Dual Degree High School – earn an accredited bachelor’s while you finish high school.
  2. Tech & Trades Diploma – a two-year fast-track that marries solid academics with apprenticeship-ready skills.

Along the way she tackles FAFSA headaches, the national trades shortage, protecting your teen’s faith on campus, and how True North’s advising team walks families through every step.

Key Takeaways * Sticker Shock: College tuition up 20 % in 10 years; textbooks up 400 %. Average in-state cost now ~$28K/yr; many privates top $65K. * Debt Trap: U.S. student-loan debt = $1.1 trillion; deregulated lenders can capitalize unpaid interest during forbearance, ballooning balances. * Completion Crisis: Average time to a bachelor’s is 6 years; >50 % of freshmen never finish. * Ideological Pressure: 70 % of incoming evangelical students renounce faith by Thanksgiving of freshman year; many never return. * Trades Opportunity: 7 million skilled-trade openings now; projected shortfall of 2 million more by 2030. Starting wages often $18–$30/hr with zero college debt. * True North Solutions:

+ *Dual Degree*: 120 credits + high-school diploma, fully Cognia-accredited, ESA/and may be 529-eligible, no debt.
+ *Tech & Trades*: 22 HS credits in two years, core academics + life & soft-skills, direct links to vetted apprenticeships (HVAC, electrical, auto, welding & more).
+ *Mix-and-Match*: Students can start with trades and layer on the dual degree—or vice versa—based on goals.
  • Support Built In: Dedicated advisors, robust LMS “virtual campus,” study-guide-plus-exam model (re-takeable), and a Christ-centered worldview throughout.

🎧 Episode Summary In this episode, Lisa Nehring encourages homeschool parents to rethink the college experience and consider smarter, more affordable alternatives that align with their students' values, goals, and future career prospects.

Lisa shares why the traditional 4-year college pathway is no longer the default and how families can save thousands by combining dual enrollment, CLEP, and strategic degree planning—all while preparing students with real-world, marketable skills for the digital economy.

🔑 Key Takeaways * 📉 The College Shift: Post-pandemic, many colleges have lost value, raised prices, and shifted away from skills-based education and community-building. * 💸 Cost vs. ROI: Most students graduate in 6 years with $30K+ in debt. Without a clear vocational plan, this can be a poor investment. * 🎯 Smarter Strategy: Use dual enrollment + CLEP exams to earn transferable college credits early. * 🧾 Gen Ed Blueprint: Focus on Composition I/II, College Algebra, Intro Sciences, Social Sciences, and Diversity classes. * 🏛️ CLEP-Friendly Colleges: Consider “The Big Three” — Thomas Edison, Excelsior, Charter Oak — for flexible, affordable, accredited degrees. * 💡 Alternative Paths: Entrepreneurship, online business, and skills-based certifications offer legitimate, lower-cost career readiness.

💻 Tools + Programs from True NorthAcademy * 🎓 Dual Enrollment + Free Academic Advising * 🔎 Career Exploration Course * 🛠️ High school electives with real-world skills: Entrepreneurship, Photoshop, Video Editing, and more. * 📚 Young Professionals Series – career-track guides (law, mental health, health occupations, and more)

📌 Quotes to Remember “College should be pursued with clarity, focus, and financial wisdom—not just because it’s what everyone else is doing.”

“Help your kids develop ‘otherness’—unique skills and experiences that stand out on applications and in life.”

“It's time to rethink college as one of many viable paths, not the only ticket to success.”

Episode Summary: In this lively episode, Lisa and Gina—your trusty admin team from It's Not That Hard to Homeschool—tackle a big question that’s come up often in our community: How do you teach your kids how to learn?

The answer? The Five Common Topics—a powerful, flexible tool you can use across all grade levels and subjects to help your kids think critically and learn independently. Whether you’re homeschooling one child or ten, this method is a game changer.

Key Takeaways:

  • ✅ What are the Five Common Topics? Originating from classical education and rooted in Aristotelian thought, these are:

    1. Definition – Start by clarifying terms to prevent miscommunication and build deeper understanding.
    2. Comparison – Explore similarities and differences to build critical thinking muscles.
    3. Relationship – Examine how people, places, and ideas relate.
    4. Circumstance – Understand context: time, place, and surrounding events.
    5. Authority – Identify where truth or information is coming from—and why it matters.
    6. 🎓 Gina shares how this tool naturally aligned with her Principle Approach to homeschooling and became central to teaching her kids to reason biblically and think independently.
    7. 📚 Real-world application examples: from WWI history to college debate frustrations, to understanding family dynamics and even dinner-table conversations.

Guys, I have a quick question for you. What's the purpose of education? I ask this question all the time when I'm doing live workshops, and everybody kind of pauses—they haven't really thought about it too much. So, I want to give you three important purposes for education, regardless of what level your kids are at, what methodology you use, whether you're homeschool, public, or private school—this is across the board.

As we are in the fourth Industrial Revolution, it is such an important concept to get a hold of because our kids are going to live and work in this world. You've heard me talk about this so much before. There's a blurring of lines between physical, biological, and digital spheres now. This is the world of work and the world of education our kids are going to live in.

I have an interesting stat for you: 85% of the jobs in 2030 haven't been invented yet. Let that sink in. So, understanding the purpose of education is more important than ever before because, like every industrial revolution, some jobs are just going to go kaput, and other industries and jobs are just going to come out of nowhere.

When's the last time you used a cartwright? Nobody even knows what a cartwright was or is—those are the people who make the wheels for a cart or a buggy. But once the automotive industry took the world by storm, guess what? That whole industry just went kaput, bottom up. We're in another industrial revolution, and it's going to happen, and we're seeing it already.

So, what are the three purposes of education? Listen in to Lisa Nehring to learn.

Welcome to another episode of the Not That Hard to Homeschool Podcast.

Today, we're exploring four pivotal concepts to enrich your homeschooling experience. These insights blend academic learning with character development for a well-rounded approach.

  1. Share Your Passions with Your Kids Homeschooling offers a unique opportunity to integrate your passions into your teaching. Whether it's art, science, history, or a hobby, sharing what you love can inspire enthusiasm in your children. It shows them learning is a lifelong journey, not confined to textbooks. This approach not only enhances their knowledge but also strengthens family bonds and fosters mutual respect.
  2. Make the Most of Kids' Natural Curiosity Children are naturally curious, always questioning the world around them. Harness this curiosity by encouraging exploration and discovery. Tailor lessons to their interests, and you'll see engagement soar. This method nurtures a love for learning and encourages self-directed exploration. It also teaches children the value of perseverance and the joy of uncovering new knowledge, which are crucial aspects of character development.
  3. Give Them a Challenge Challenges stimulate growth, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Setting challenging but achievable goals for your children helps them learn the value of hard work and determination. It prepares them for real-world situations where perseverance is key. Encourage them to embrace challenges, not shy away from them. This mindset fosters a strong work ethic and the courage to face difficulties head-on.
  4. Clear Strategies Lead to Success Clear, structured strategies in your homeschooling approach can significantly impact learning outcomes. Establish routines, set clear expectations, and use organized planning to guide your homeschooling journey. This clarity helps children understand what is expected of them and how they can achieve their goals. It also teaches them the importance of organization and planning in achieving success, valuable life skills that extend beyond academics. Integrating Character Development Throughout these four strategies, emphasize character development. Teach your children the value of integrity, empathy, and responsibility. Show them how their passions can contribute positively to the world. Encourage them to ask questions, seek knowledge, and understand diverse perspectives. Challenges should be met with perseverance and a positive attitude, and success should be seen as a product of effort and ethical conduct. In conclusion, homeschooling is not just about academic achievement; it's about nurturing well-rounded individuals prepared for the challenges of life. By sharing your passions, leveraging natural curiosity, offering challenges, and employing clear strategies, you can provide a rich, fulfilling educational experience. Episode Title: Understanding the Carnegie Unit and How It Relates to Homeschooling High School

Show Notes:

Welcome to a new episode of "It's Not That Hard to Homeschool," where we demystify the challenges of homeschooling and provide practical advice to make your homeschooling journey smoother. Today, we're diving into a topic that bewilders many homeschooling parents of high schoolers: the Carnegie Unit and its implications for homeschooling through the high school years.

The Carnegie Unit, a traditional measure of academic credit in the United States, is often used to represent one hour of classroom instruction per day, five days a week, for one academic year. But how does this translate to a homeschooling environment, where traditional classroom hours don't necessarily apply?

Our host, Lisa Nehring, breaks down the concept of the Carnegie Unit, tracing its origins back to the early 20th century and discussing its role in standardizing education across the nation. More importantly, Lisa provides insight into how homeschooling parents can leverage the Carnegie Unit to plan and document their high schooler's educational journey.

Lisa also discusses the importance of documentation and how keeping detailed records can benefit homeschooling families, especially when preparing transcripts for college applications.

  • The traditional education system demands considerable time investment from students, leaving little room for pursuing passions, hobbies, or even quality family time.

  • The emotional cost of education is often overlooked but significant, as many students experience stress, anxiety, and sometimes even burnout due to the pressure to conform to standardized norms.

Segment 2: Embracing Parental Responsibility:

  • Homeschooling presents an alternative path that allows parents to take back their vital role in their children's education.

  • Parents can tailor the curriculum to suit their child's unique learning style, interests, and pace, fostering a love for learning and a deeper understanding of subjects.

  • By homeschooling, parents can instill important values, ethics, and life skills that might not receive the same attention in traditional educational settings.

  • The increased involvement of parents in their child's education nurtures a stronger bond and a deeper sense of trust and support within the family unit.

Segment 3: Homeschooling through High School: A Great Choice for Families:

  • Homeschooling during high school offers a myriad of benefits, including flexibility in scheduling and course selection, enabling students to explore their passions and concentrate on areas where they excel.

  • High school homeschooling encourages self-motivation and responsibility, traits that prove invaluable in college and future careers.

  • Individualized attention from parents fosters a supportive learning environment, helping students overcome challenges and explore various subjects in greater depth.

  • Homeschooling opens up opportunities for students to engage in real-world experiences, internships, and community involvement, enhancing their personal growth and development.

Conclusion:

  • As we wrap up this episode, let's remember that homeschooling, especially through high school, offers families a remarkable opportunity to embrace parental responsibility and reimagine the true cost of education.

  • By investing our time, energy, and passion into our children's learning journey, we can create an educational experience that is truly transformative and empowering.

  • Thank you for joining me, Lisa Nehring, on this insightful episode of "Not That Hard to Homeschool Highschool." Until next time, happy homeschooling!

Learning Styles & Online Education

Learning Styles are as much a part of the Homeschooling Parents vocabulary as Ticonderoga Pencils and the jokes about denim jumpers. We love them, embrace them and for good reason. They help us understand our kids better and make homeschooling that much more enjoyable.

The best way to use learning styles is to be aware of who tends towards which style, and then offer up a variety of ways to learn, assess and review the lesson.

There are 4 Major Learning Styles

  1. Reading & Writing
  2. Visual
  3. Auditory
  4. Kinesthetic

Online Education

2020 brought to the fore online learning. It seems that the entire world went from vague understanding of what online learning could be to jumping in with both feet- whether they liked it or not.

In the midst of this, seasoned online academies, like True North Homeschool Academy continued to offer dynamic and interactive, small group classes that inspired students to learn, grow and develop. What was the difference between the awful virtual schools and online academies like True North Homeschool Academy?

Years of online teaching and learning experience, intentionality and the SAMR Model.

The SAMR Model

The SAMR Hierarchy of Online Education was developed by a Harvard trained Biologist, which makes sense, as Scientists are great at classifying information. And this Model is super helpful in understanding the various “types' ' of online education. There are four aspects of this model. The first two are enhancement and the last two are transformative.

The SAMR Model Explained

  1. Substitution - Technology acts as a direct substitute with no functional change.
  2. Augmentation - Technology acts as a direct substitute, with functional improvement.
  3. Modification - Technology allows for direct task redesign, particularly when it comes to group projects.
    1. Reimagination - Technology allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable.

Understanding the SAMR Model when purchasing online classes and investing in an online program is an important step in knowing if you are getting the type of program that will engage and encourage active learning or is designed to be a passive experience.

Where do Learning Styles and the SAMR Model Meet?

Knowing our kids' preferred learning method can help us make the best choices when it comes to online educational options, allowing us to evaluate options systematically and allocating resources strategically.

What to look for in online learning based on Learning Style

Read/ Write Students

These students learn best by reading and writing and can do well with many different kinds of online learning programs, pre-recorded and live.

What to Avoid: Be aware of online programs or teachers who talk really fast or don’t have time for the student to ask questions and clarify information for their notes.

Visual Learners

These students learn by watching so online classes that are visually well organized are gong to really appeal to this type of learning.

What to Avoid: Online classes where the teacher simply lectures, with no visual graphics or virtual classroom with extension activities.

Auditory Learners

The auditory learner does great when there is a high level of auditory engagement in the online learning environment.

What to avoid: Online classes that have a lot of music or noise but do not include content, majority of class is visuals, students do not have a chance to ask questions, or interact verbally with teacher and fellow students.

Kinesthetic Learners

These types of learners prefer engaging, hands-on project based learning.

What to avoid: Online classes where students sit and passively listen or watch/

Once again, Learning Styles are a handy tool for the homeschooling parents as we evaluate new tech and its uses in our homeschool. The SAMR Model, too, is a useful tool for evaluation as we consider the many online opportunities with the explosion of online learning materials! Understanding both models allows us to be savvy and discriminating consumers and strategize the very best homeschooling program for our family!

Show Notes- Is it Time to Pivot?

Tis the season to take stock of the year before, dream about the year ahead and realize maybe you're a bit off track in some areas. It’s a time when we realize some seasons are over and new ones are about to begin.

It’s no different in homeschooling. It’s seasonal. And what may have worked last year, last month or even last week, just might not work for now or for what’s ahead.

Join True North Homeschool Academy Director, Lisa Nehring as she talks about when it might be a good time to pivot, how to pivot and gives you some pro-tips on pivoting, based on her 30 years of homeschooling experience.

So we learned to do the homeschool Pivot. Pivoting means to shift to a new strategy.

Pivoting can mean big, overarching changes, or small micro changes. It can apply to one kid, or one subject or everybody.

Goldilocks Principle

your mission

You can switch up science and keep math, or move to a dynamic online writing

Adding in a fun, mid-year class, like Entrepreneurship can supercharge your entire semester- and who knows, it might literally change your students life!

Make time for life skills, if you haven’t already and spend time cleaning, doing laundry, shopping, budgeting or gardening together.

Bring in an expert for additional learning and support. Having your kids learn from a Ph.D in Science or a native, fluent Spanish teacher can change things from ho-hum to shazam!

True North’s Academic Advising and Performance Series test can help you know where you’re starting from and give you a clear, actionable and affordable plan moving forward.

It’s a New Year and that’s always exciting. And as we begin it, I want to give you permission- if you feel like you need it- to pivot!

Do you have ideas for how to take care of your heart while you take care of those in your homeschool?

As we get ready to start another homeschool year, we get caught up in all the minutiae of planning all the things -- curriculum planning, lesson planning, schedule planning -- and we can lose sight of the bigger picture.

Yet the bigger picture is vitally important when it comes to our motivation from day-to-day and also for helping us determine whether we are being successful or not.

Don't forget these big picture perspectives!

As they get older, it is wise to include our teens in the homeschool high school planning process. They deserve a say in what they do, especially since we want them to become more independent in preparation for college.

In this episode we discuss all the areas that the teen can give input, as well as what to do when they're not giving you much of anything. LOL.

Always remember the bigger picture, which is that the relationship trumps all. Involving them in planning is a great way to keep things going smoothly. But for the specifics of how to make that happen when planning high school, listen to the episode!

You can be swimming along and then things aren't going so well anymore. Homeschooling high school is all about adapting, and so you may realize that it's time for something to change. Often this involves a change in the overall homeschool high school plan, not just tweak like a new curriculum choice.

But no fear; this does not have to be a big deal! In fact, if there's one constant when homeschooling high school, it's that change WILL happen, LOL!

In this episode we discuss reasons why you might want to change the overall plan, how to change the plan, and what the key factors are to keep in mind as you do so.

Be encouraged!

Knowing how to prepare for college academics may seem easy compared to whether your homeschooled teen will be ready socially and emotionally. Ann has sent four kids off to college and has learned a bit about what they will need to be ready for in the realms of relationships, expectations, etc. In this episode Ann shares several character qualities that will help your teen succeed.

I've sent four kids off to college. Two graduated -- one of those went on to get her Master's degree, and the other is studying for CPA exams right now. One of the kids decided college wasn't for her; not because of grades but because of inclination. She came home and decided to work full time instead (and is now out on her own). The fourth will graduate junior college with his associates degree soon. We're pleased with these results!

We didn't do anything super-duper magical to get them ready. Preparing for college academically entails a few common-sense tasks that will help grow your teen to handle the independence of college courses and the level of the work. You might discover it's easier than you think.

As always, don't listen to the voices saying you have to do all. the. things. Wait for the third item I mention for more understanding about that. :-)

During the high school years, our teens are getting more independent. How does that work for high school writing? How involved does Mom need to be? What about planning, editing, grading, oh my?

Ack, not only can it seem scary to work on high school writing with our homeschooled teens, but to prepare them for college level writing is even more frightening. We don't want them to struggle or fail in college because we didn't do our job!

Misti Lacy, the Curriculum Consultant at WriteShop, has lotsa experience teaching writing at both the high school level and the college level, so she is the perfect person to talk us through our fears and give us practical ideas to feel more confident that our teens will be prepared.

NOTE: We discovered after recording this that we forgot to discuss formats such as MLA, APA, etc., which are definitely a component in college writing requirements.
