In this heartfelt and deeply personal episode of Black Parents Aging, Olivia Smith explores the kind of inheritance that often goes unspoken — the legacy that goes far beyond money, property, or financial assets. From family names and oral history to treasured heirlooms, recipes, values, and traditions, this conversation highlights how the true essence of a family is often passed down through stories, memories, and culture. Olivia reflects on growing up close to her grandparents, the lasting memories of her grandmother's cooking, and the realization that some of the most meaningful parts of family history can be lost when they are not intentionally preserved.
Listeners are encouraged to think about what makes their family unique and how they can begin protecting not only their financial future, but also the history, wisdom, and identity that deserve to live on for generations to come. This episode is a powerful reminder that wealth is not only what we leave behind — it is also who we are, where we come from, and what we choose to carry forward.
Key Takeaways: • Inheritance includes more than money — names, stories, recipes, traditions, and values are also forms of legacy. • Family elders hold priceless wisdom and history that should be recorded and preserved while they are still here. • Heirlooms become even more meaningful when their stories and significance are passed down with them. • Recipes and cultural traditions are powerful connections to identity, family, and home. • Intentional planning should include both protecting financial assets and preserving family history for future generations. • Small steps such as recorded interviews, family cookbooks, legacy letters, and storytelling gatherings can make a lasting impact.
In this episode of Black Parents Aging, the conversation focuses on the unique challenges immigrant families face as their parents grow older while navigating complex American healthcare, legal, and social systems. The discussion explores how cultural values, language barriers, and unfamiliar processes can impact decision-making around medical care, estate planning, and long-term support. Listeners will gain insight into balancing respect for a parent's independence with the need to advocate for their safety and well-being, while also learning practical ways to prepare for the future with intention and compassion.
Key Takeaways • Aging immigrant parents may face additional barriers such as language differences, cultural expectations, and lack of familiarity with U.S. systems. • Advocacy often becomes a shared family responsibility, especially when navigating healthcare, legal, and financial decisions. • Respecting independence while offering support is essential for maintaining dignity and trust. • Early conversations about estate planning, medical wishes, and long-term care can prevent confusion and family conflict later. • Understanding available community resources and legal planning tools can help families create more stability and peace of mind.

The episode highlights the real risks of romance scams targeting older adults and offers important tips to help seniors and their loved ones recognize warning signs and protect themselves. Key Topics:
In this episode of Black Parents Aging, Olivia Smith and Nicola Robinson continue their conversation on elder fraud by focusing on investment scams, cryptocurrency fraud, and sweepstakes scams that disproportionately target older adults.
They discuss how scammers pose as investment professionals promising to double or triple retirement savings, why cryptocurrency scams are especially dangerous because the money is nearly impossible to recover, and how classic sweepstakes scams still trap many seniors today.
The conversation also shifts to practical steps families can take to protect aging parents and grandparents, including having open conversations about scams, freezing credit, blocking suspicious calls, monitoring financial accounts, and using tools like powers of attorney to help oversee finances.
The episode closes with warning signs families should look for and resources available to report elder fraud and scams.
Key Takeaways • Cryptocurrency and investment scams caused over $1.6 billion in losses for victims over 60 in 2024. • Any investment promising to double or triple your money quickly is likely a scam. • Cryptocurrency scams are especially dangerous because once the money is sent, it is extremely difficult to recover. • Sweepstakes scams often ask victims to pay a fee or taxes upfront to claim a fake prize. • Simply talking with aging parents or grandparents about scams can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim. • Tools like the Do Not Call Registry, call blocking, and credit freezes can help protect against fraud. • Services such as EverSafe or Carefull can monitor accounts for unusual transactions or hidden subscription charges. • A Power of Attorney can allow trusted family members to monitor financial accounts and protect loved ones. • Sudden financial trouble, excessive packages, or unusual spending may be red flags of a scam. • Elder fraud can be reported to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or the National Elder Fraud Hotline.
In this episode of the Black Parents Aging Podcast, Olivia Smith and Nicola Robinson dive into a growing issue impacting families across the country—elder fraud and scams. With billions of dollars lost each year, scammers are increasingly targeting older adults through sophisticated tactics that can be difficult to recognize.
Olivia and Nicola break down some of the most common scams affecting seniors, including government impersonation scams involving Social Security and Medicare, IRS threats, tech support fraud, and devastating online romance scamsthat prey on loneliness and trust. They also discuss why many seniors hesitate to report scams and how embarrassment, fear, and concerns about losing independence can keep families in the dark.
Throughout the conversation, they share real-life examples, warning signs, and practical tips to help families recognize red flags and protect their loved ones. This episode is a must-listen for anyone with aging parents or grandparents who want to stay informed and proactive about preventing fraud.
Key Takeaways
• Fraud targeting seniors is rising rapidly, with reported losses increasing from $600 million in 2020 to $2.4 billion in 2024. • Many scams go unreported because victims feel embarrassed or ashamed, meaning the real financial impact is likely much higher. • Government impersonation scams involving Social Security, Medicare, and the IRS are among the most common ways scammers target older adults. • Legitimate government agencies will never call unexpectedly to request personal information or payment over the phone. • Scammers often create a sense of urgency, pressuring victims to act quickly before they have time to verify the request. • Romance scams are one of the most emotionally and financially devastating, often targeting widowed or lonely seniors through online relationships. • Fraudsters frequently invent emergencies or sudden financial problems to convince victims to send money repeatedly. • Tech support scams exploit seniors who may be less familiar with computers, tricking them into granting remote access to their devices.

They discuss the importance of planning for long-term care, the misconceptions surrounding it, and the different types of policies available. Jeff shares insights on when to start considering long-term care insurance, the costs involved, and the health assessments required for eligibility. The conversation emphasizes the need for proactive planning, especially for aging parents, and highlights the benefits of hybrid policies that combine life insurance with long-term care coverage. takeaways * Long-term care insurance covers activities of daily living. * Many people confuse long-term care with Medicare. * Planning for long-term care should start in your 50s. * Costs for long-term care can be significant, averaging $65,000 to $112,000 annually. * Hybrid policies offer a death benefit if not used for care. * Health assessments are crucial for obtaining long-term care insurance. * Many believe their children will care for them, which is a misconception. * The government does not cover long-term care costs adequately. * Choosing a reputable insurance company is essential. * Proactive planning can prevent financial strain later in life.

For many couples, the line between marriage and estate planning is blurry. Estate state planning between a married couple seems like it may not be needed because of the way that married couples generally own things and because wealth transfer between married couples is usually pretty easy. However, one thing is for sure: if you don't create and execute your estate plan, the state will do it for you.
In today's episode, Nicola and Smith set straight the importance of estate planning in marriage/divorce. If you forget everything, there’s one thing that they both want YOU to remember: Marriage is not an Estate plan.

As days go by, you probably will get to a point where you realize that your aging parents need help. There are usually warning signs: difficulty with daily activities; memory problems; trouble with banking and finances; multiple falls; problems with driving; forgetting medications. Sometimes an elderly or ill loved one needs more than occasional assistance - they need full-time care.
But who will provide that care? A caregiver can really be anyone. It can be a family member or a professional. And so a lot of times when people bring in professionals, thay enter into some type of agreement. This is where the caregiver agreement plays its role.
In today’s episode, Nicola dives deep into the details of a caregiver agreement. She shares why it’s crucial to have one in place, and the peace of mind that such agreements bring.

You can still remember the days when you and your siblings were young kids. Didn't it seem like those times would last forever? Now, though, you’re all adults with older parents. Your brother or sister may be in denial about your parent’s state but now you need them to step in with caregiving or expenses.
How do you begin to talk to your siblings about your aging parents?
The perfect time to hold a family meeting is when you start seeing signs of your parents either slowing down or looking like they’ll need help. When setting your family meeting, it should come from a place of love, and the earlier you start having these conversations, the better.

Most people, especially aging parents, hoard because they have an extreme sentimental attachment to their possessions, or they believe they might need items later. Hoarding can also be a sign that an older person is depressed or showing early symptoms of dementia. Some of the problems associated with hoarding include tripping, falling and breaking a bone; overlooking bills and missing medications that are hidden in the clutter; and suffering from the environmental effects of mold, mildew and dust, and even living among insects and rodents.
In today’s episode, Nicola talks about how to approach the hoarding subject if your parents are hoarders. She also shares how you can help your parents get rid of things they no longer need, and why this is extremely important especially if they wish to remain at home as they age.

We are living in a technology age and it’s important our aging parents pay attention to the changes or risk being left behind. The internet has opened up so many doors for people of all ages, making it easier for everyone to shop, work, and learn online.
