UNC Hoops Talk Podcast #255 Live Action is in the books and we are getting closer to basketball season! Here are the season predictions that were sent in to me by you guys! Now they are down so we can see how right we were at the end of the season! Mine- 5 regular season losses so 26-5, 2-1 in ACC tourney, 3-1 in NCAA tourney (Elite 8) so total 31-7 Gil- eke into the tourney and make a run to the Sweet 16 and knocked out by Florida Blake- super frustrating season where if a couple bad games had gone their way, they wouldn't be on the bubble. 18-12 Twitter: Lorri Blair Mercer (@CarolinaChic23)- 21-10- lose in the ACC championship final - make it to the final four. Michael May (@mikemay23)- 23-8 regular season, Lose in semis of ACCT, Elite 8 Bills Mafia (@bills0327)- 26-5 ACC champs, ACCT runner up, lose in final four Mark Crisp (@markyd0522)- 22-9 regular season. 2 wins in the acc tournament and ncaa tournament. Sweet sixteen finish. Our season record will be 26-11. Margaret LaPlante (@maggs219)- 24-7 in regular season, I think we'll win ACC and make elite 8 in tourney William Clark (@WilliamBClark3)- I feel like this team will be better than last year (which isn’t difficult to do) they can go 22-9 in the regular season, make it to the ACC semifinals (not win) but then have a sweet 16 run to end the season. JM (@mcpetersj13)- I honestly have no idea- I don't think I have ever seen a UNC team built like this and it will probably depend on how well a freshman PG can run the offense. I will go with 20-21 wins in the regular season. We'll see from there. Steve Wolf Sr. (@stevewolf44)- 26-5. Semis of ACCT. Elite 8 NCAAT. Chandler (@chancollins40)- I saw they’ll go 23-8 and will make it to the sweet 16 Lance D (@LanceLovesHeels)- 23-8 in the 31 reg season games. 28-10 after postseason. The more likely thing that I believe will happen is for UNC to go 27-4 winning the ACC regular season title. Not making it to the ACC championship game since it's the UNC way😂 winning the national championship 81-74 over Gonzaga. Bills mafia (@bills0327)- 25-6, win acc tourney , lose in final four Mark Crisp (@markyd0522)- 26-5 regular season record. I think we will get to the championship game of the ACC tournament and lose it to a team who’s probably getting hot at the end of the season. But I do think we will cut down the nets and win the national championship. I’m thinking our overall record may be 34-6. Give or take a couple games. Dream season (gotta believe to achieve). dtgoulet Jr. (@dtgoulet)- 27-4 regular season (win) Win ACCT, NATTY Win James Laughinghouse (@JLHouse79)- 32-7, 1 seed, reg season champs, not acct, Think they slip up before Christmas once ot twice...just beat Indiana FFS But ya know what positive vibes let's go with winning the whole damn thing Jared Varner (@jvarner_wv)- 20-8 regular season 1 seed in acc tournament- lose in acc finals, make final four and lose @mcpetersj13- Season prediction-Not trying to be the pessimist for this hoops season but I expect some tough games. I think the offenses will be stagnant against physical teams early in the year. Strong year-I am expecting 5-6 losses with a team that gets stronger late in the year. Idk about what to expect the the NCAA bit the team should complete for the ACC. Davis and Love are still the key. Can Davis run an offense and move the ball or is he always going to be a dribble/probe guy? Can Love consistently make good decisions? Do they both stay engaged defensively. Cautiously optimistic for a the team to make a tournament run again. No idea hopefully all the way, but I will say elite 8. Discord Josh G (Rowdy)- This years team imo is better than last years. A lot more depth and I think Pete Nance is an amazing replacement for Brady Manek. This season will be a hard one for our players with all the expectations but I think they live up to them. I think we go 25-6 in the regular season and win the ACC regular season championship, and I think this team gets to at least the elite 8 with a very good shot to go all the way and avenge the loss from last season. I think the offenses will be stagnant against physical teams early in the year. Strong year-I am expecting 5-6 losses with a team that gets stronger late in the year. Idk about what to expect the the NCAA bit the team should complete for the ACC. Davis and Love are still the key. Can Davis run an offense and move the ball or is he always going to be a dribble/probe guy? Can Love consistently make good decisions? Do they both stay engaged defensively. Cautiously optimistic for a the team to make a tournament run again. No idea hopefully all the way, but I will say elite 8. Discord Josh G (Rowdy)- This years team imo is better than last years. A lot more depth and I think Pete Nance is an amazing replacement for Brady Manek. This season will be a hard one for our players with all the expectations but I think they live up to them. I think we go 25-6 in the regular season and win the ACC regular season championship, and I think this team gets to at least the elite 8 with a very good shot to go all the way and avenge the loss from last season. I do believe UNC gets Gonzaga back on December 18th with a road win in Spokane. I 100% my next prediction because I believe this team has the potential to do this. I believe UNC goes 19-1 in the ACC. Yes, 19-1. And it’s not going to be against a tough team like Duke, Virginia, or Louisville. I believe we will have a road loss against Florida State on February 3rd. I believe UNC loses in the ACC Championship to Duke, but then we will go on to win the National Championship in Atlanta vs Michigan State. After struggling with Iona in the first half before pulling away, then taking care of Washington in a business-like way, the Heels are on to take on 5th seed Auburn who dismantled Kansas! Wow! Our Tar Heels are headed to Phoenix! Back to the Final Four for some redemption and to bring home something they didn't last year! That's right since last week's podcast UNC took care of the Butler Bulldogs and then had another epic matchup with the Kentucky Wildcats. This time, however, they came out on top thanks to a buzzer beater by none other than Luke Maye on a play similar to what Villanova used to beat us for the championship last year! Of course, I talk about the Butler game, a little, then move on to what many think was the championship game against UK. After that, I look ahead to the Final Four game against the Oregon Ducks. Our Tar Heels have survived, barely, and advanced on to the Sweet 16 in Memphis, TN next weekend. After blowing out Texas So. they barely do enough to get by Arkansas to set up a match up with Butler and then either UCLA or Kentucky if they win for a chance at the Final Four! Your Tar Heels are ACC regular season Champs for the second year in a row! UNC had claimed the outright title earlier in the day with Notre Dame losing, so once we took down Duke on Saturday night we ended up claiming the toughest league in the country by 2 games! Obviously, I discuss the game against Duke and then look ahead to the 2017 New York Life ACC Tournament in Brooklyn! Well, I am trying to move past the game and through the mourning process, I am able to go back out into public so thats good. Ok, maybe it's not that bad, but it certainly feels like it sometimes. You already know our Tar Heels lost in the most devastating way, but I am going to try to go back through it and see why. Was our defense not up to the task? Was their defense too tough? Did we not make enough shots, they just hit some tough ones or did the zebras come into play as well? This is one that will never be forgotten and unfortunately we are on the wrong end of it. We will have to see that shot replayed every year at tournament time, championship time and even more often. Who is starting the support group for us? Hopefully, I make it through this episode and we all need to try to make it through this offseason. Next time I will talk more about who could leave or test the waters, anything new on the investigation "stuff", and the schedule for the podcast. The time has come again. The time no Tar Heel fan wants unless we are still playing. Time to put a wrap on another season. The North Carolina Tar Heels and Duke Blue Devils squared off in yet another instant classic game between the schools separated by just 8 miles. What has become accepted as the greatest rivalry in college basketball and quite possibly all of sports did not disappoint. With Duke pulling out quickly, UNC making the comeback and pushing their lead to 10-points in the second half before relenting it back to Duke to cause overtime. Some tough times have come to Chapel Hill since the last podcast. Of course, we all know about the passing of legendary Coach Dean Smith, plus the Tar Heels went 1-1 losing to Pitt. However, what everyone (ESPN) is talking about is the UNC/Duke game on Wednesday. North Carolina is sitting at 5th in the ACC, 1 game behind Duke, but have also lost 3 of the last 4 games heading into the first match-up. I briefly discuss the BC and Pitt games, but most of the podcast is dedicated to our rivals down the road. Who will stop Okafor? Can we guard the 3? Do we have a chance? The winning streak is over...the Heels had their 6 game winning streak snapped on Saturday in Louisville, losing to the Cardinals in OT after leading by as many as 18 in the second half. With a quick turnaround, UNC hosted #3 Virginia on Monday and the Cavaliers once again pulled away in the second half to bring the Tar Heels to 7-3 in the ACC and 17-6 overall. With a little big of a break here playing just 1 game in the next 11 days, can the Heels get healthy? Is is just a health issue?
