Hey marketing mates! In this episode, we're talking about productivity and the small rituals that help us actually get things done.

From the morning coffee (or decaf!) that gets us into work mode, to the systems and habits that keep the day on track, we're unpacking our simple productivity hacks that make a big difference.

We cover practical strategies like writing your to-do list the day before, focusing on just two or three key priorities each week, and batching similar tasks so you can stay in the right headspace. We also dive into protecting your focus time and share tools and techniques that help avoid distraction and overwhelm.

If your calendar is already filling up and you're looking for a reset on how to work smarter, this episode is packed with reminders, ideas, and a few productivity experiments you might want to try.

So grab your coffee, block out some focus time, and let's talk productivity.

Hey marketing mates! This episode feels like a warm hug in podcast form. Today we're diving into little treats and nostalgia culture… because let's be honest, the world feels like a lot right now.

People are actively craving comfort. Online chatter around nostalgia grew by 18% in 2025. That's over 43 million conversations (Brandwatch, 2025)! And while big indulgences might be off the table, "little treat" moments are booming, with more than 40,000 mentions every month.

Over 20% of marketers are now looking at how those small, feel-good moments can show up in their strategies. So grab your coffee (or your little treat of choice) and tune in. We're unpacking why comfort is converting and why looking back might just be the way forward.

In this episode, we’re unpacking a tool that can take your mentorship conversations from “nice chat” to “game-changing”: the GROW model.

Whether you’re formally mentoring someone or just the go-to person for career advice in your team, the GROW framework is a simple but powerful way to guide your chats and actually help people make progress.

Here’s the quick version:

  1. Goal – What are they trying to achieve?
  2. Reality – Where are they right now?
  3. Options – What could they do?
  4. Way Forward – What will they do next?

We’ll walk you through how to use each step, share tips from our own mentoring experiences, and chat about how this model helps cut through the fluff and build real momentum.

Have you used the GROW model before, or keen to try it out? Let us know by connecting with us on LinkedIn @yourmarketingmates.

If you found this episode helpful, share it with a fellow mentor (or mentee!) in your world.

See you next ep, mates. Belle & Liz.

In this episode, we’re diving into a topic that we think more leaders and people managers should know about: stay interviews.

You’ve probably heard of exit interviews - those conversations you have when someone has already decided to leave. The problem? By then, it’s too late to change anything. Stay interviews flip that script.

What is a Stay Interview?

A stay interview is a proactive conversation between a leader and a team member designed to uncover what’s working, what’s not, and what might help keep that person around. It’s all about listening, understanding, and, ideally, retaining your team before they start looking elsewhere.

We're curious to hear whether you're already doing stay interviews with your team and how that has impacted morale and retention. Let us know by connecting with us on LinkedIn @yourmarketingmates.

If you found this episode helpful, don't forget to share it with your friends and colleagues!

See you next ep, mates.

Put simply, readability determines how easy or difficult it is to understand a piece of text.

When you consider how much copy a marketer writes in a day, whether that’s social posts, emails, blogs, or website copy, readability is pretty darn important.

The tools we explore in this episode include:

  1. Datayze Readability Analyzer

Estimates the readability of a passage of text using the Flesch Reading Ease, Fog Scale Level, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, and other metrics.

  1. WebFX Readability Test

Similar to Datayze, but tests the readability of your whole website.

  1. Onmisend Email Subject Line Tester

Analyses and improves your email subject lines.

  1. WordHippo

Basically a thesaurus on steroids.

Next time you’re writing copy, we encourage you to try these tools and consider the following:

  • Word count
  • Sentence length
  • Sentence structure
  • Number of syllables per word

It’s still relatively early in the new year (although March is creeping up incredibly quickly!), which means it’s the perfect time for you to undertake a little personal brand audit.

Did you have a Myspace when you were younger (gah, cringe)? Or maybe you’re like Belle and have had sporadic Twitter phases on and off for the last 10+ years…

In this ep, Liz steps us through 5 simple ways we can do a social media audit to ensure the content that appears online for your personal brand reflects what you want it to:

  1. Start by doing a Google of your name (don’t forget any nicknames or maiden names)
  2. Check all your old social media accounts
  3. Be sure to double-check all your social media privacy settings
  4. Audit your current social account content

    1. Does this portray the right message?
    2. Would I feel ok if this was shown on TV or to my grandparents?
    3. Is it something that can be used to harm my personal security?
    4. Do I need to update anything to be relevant/meet best practice
    5. Update your profiles and messaging to reflect the new year (new job, new headshot)

Bonus tip: Use this cleansing energy to also unsubscribe from any emails you no longer want!

You’ve probably heard the term “emotional intelligence” and you may be wondering what this means and why it’s helpful in the workplace (and life in general)!

In Jamilla Rizvi’s book ‘Not Just Lucky,’ she gives a great breakdown:

“In basic terms, having emotional intelligence means you’re able to recognise and manage not only your own emotions but the emotions of others. “

This week we discuss the 4 pillars that contribute to emotional intelligence:

  1. Self-awareness
  2. Self-management
  3. Social awareness
  4. Managing relationships

Helpful resource: Check out the HBR article we mentioned - “Emotional intelligence has 12 elements. Which do you need to work on?”

We have one more episode before we have a little break over Christmas! Can you guess what it is?

More often than not strategic planning is put in the “too hard basket”, but it’s essential that you carve the time out of your business-as-usual (BAU) routine to set the long-term vision for your business.

Spoiler: it also helps to make your short-term more effective and efficient!

In this week’s episode, Belle shares the steps she’s gone through to shape the H2 goals with her team:

  1. Identify the problem - objectives and timeframes
  2. Analyse trends and benchmark data
  3. Define success metrics
  4. Articulate and communicate the strategic plan
  5. Kick off the execution phase

With Q4 planning just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to scrub up on your strategic skills.

Being in marketing, we have all experienced that dreaded “oops” moment after we’ve hit send on an important email - forgetting to link an attachment, typos in the subject line, broken links, sending to the wrong email segment…we could go on.

One of the best things you can do is be prepared. Have steps in place for if and when these facepalm moments happen, particularly if it’s a time-sensitive campaign.

Often as marketers, we can get caught up in the tactics and the numbers and forget the bigger picture.

In this episode, we’re chatting about the importance of building relationships with your key stakeholders (managers, executives, clients, and so on) and ways you can demonstrate your value within the workplace.

In summary, these are our 5 tips:

  1. Look for opportunities to connect and build relationships
  2. Consider how you communicate (don’t always resort to email)
  3. Think about what they (your boss, client, team) want to know
  4. Keep track of your achievements in a “win book”
  5. Be prepared to back yourself!

Welcome to another episode marketing mates! This week we’re talking money and how to talk the “finance talk” to your CFO, accountant, or sales team.

Often things can get a bit lost in translation between marketing acronyms and financial terms, but it’s important to clearly demonstrate the value you’re bringing through your marketing activity, with the budget you’ve been allocated.

Hot tip: you always want an ally in the room when you’re about to talk money and there’s nobody better than your finance person.

Here’s a little cheat sheet of 10 finance terms you should start getting familiar with as a marketer:

  1. ROI - return on investment
  2. Assets - things that you own
  3. Liabilities - financial expenses owed
  4. Balance Sheet - a snapshot of the business with all assets and liabilities
  5. Cash Flow - measures the cash flowing in and out of the business
  6. Margin - the difference between a selling price and the profit made
  7. Profit & Loss Statement (P&L)- also known as an Income Statement
  8. Gross Income - the total money earned before taking out expenses
  9. Gross Profit - the difference between the sale and the direct cost of making the sale
  10. Working Capital - the cash you have in the bank that you can invest.

Now don’t be scared, go make friends with your finance person!

May is officially dubbed “strategy season” for those of us in marketing-land, and in the lead up to EOFY there’s no better time than the present to revisit your marketing strategy, goals, customer behaviour and success metrics for the next financial year.

As we’ve touched on in our “S1E10 - 4Cs of COVID” episode, the motivators, and behaviour of our customers have changed dramatically in the last financial year, with a lot of people looking for brands who connect with their personal values, make them feel safe and provide a sense of community.

So make sure you take a look at your customers (run some surveys and look at your data) and use these insights to inform your strategy. You may have also noticed that a lot of brands are currently running brand awareness campaigns that connect with their audience on an emotional level, rather than ‘hard sell’ lead generation campaigns. Is this something you should consider for your new FY marketing strategy?

Here’s a link to the Optus TVC Liz mentioned in this week’s episode: https://youtu.be/mSH4OfewKw4

“Optus has revealed its new positioning, ‘It starts with yes’, in a campaign set to inject a sense of optimism and possibility back into the brand.”

Let us know if there are any other EOFY tips you would like to share with the YMM community. You can join the conversation on our LinkedIn page or send us a DM :)

In our first episode we take a trip down memory lane and discuss how we’ve ended up in our current roles - what we studied, where our specialist marketing skills have developed and how our current roles in leadership have continued to develop our T-shaped marketing skills.
