Welcome to Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes. Based on the YouTube series Out of Frame and Out of Frame Shorts, join show creator Sean W. Malone, Shorts co-writer Jen Maffessanti, and Shorts video editor Paul Nelson as they dig a little deeper into the intersection of popular culture and big ideas, as well as some of the things that didn’t quite make the cut for the videos.
We watched Top Gun: Maverick and were blown away by one of the best sequels of all time. Tom Cruise delivers with a thrilling plot and amazing practical effects. But do movies like this help to glorify war? We ask this question as well as: What will be the future of drone warfare? Who is the movie’s unnamed “enemy”? What made this sequel so great, and what were its flaws? All this and more on the final episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes (The main Out of Frame series will continue until August).

What’s the worst Star Wars movie of all time? The best? How did Lucas shove an excessive amount of politics into the prequels and still manage to deliver a thin story of the rise of space Hitler? We discuss all this and more on our Star Wars special episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes. Also: we have an announcement. Because Sean is leaving FEE, this podcast will end after the next episode. The main Out of Frame series will continue. LINKS:

Has Marvel entered a dark age? We’re starting to think so after getting back from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In this latest episode, we discuss whether Marvel has jumped the shark and why this movie in particular failed. The reasons include: They ruined the character of Dr. Strange by having him make stupid decisions, the plot is all over the place, and there are no meaningful limits to the characters’ mystical powers. Will any of the future Marvel releases be any better? We try to find some hope on this episode. LINKS:

We found the most “Nicolas Cage” movie of all time, and it’s amazing. In The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Nic Cage plays himself, gets into an adventure with the CIA, and it’s about as crazy as you might think. On this episode, we talk about why this movie failed at the box office despite its crazy premise and exceptional execution. We also discuss who is the next Nic Cage, why Nic Cage is crazy in real life, and whether national-security agencies are incompetent, all-powerful, or a little of both.

Everything Everywhere All At Once, the latest A24 release, is live-action Rick and Morty, but better and less nihilistic. That’s about the best way to describe this insane movie. It involves metaphysical bagels, suggestive IRS trophies, and a warmhearted family drama at the center of it all. In this episode, we talk about how this film shows that movies for adults don’t have to be boring or nihilistic, how it includes gay characters without being woke, and how it uses the multiverse trope to actually convey a positive message LINKS: Listen on other platforms: https://linktr.ee/outofframefee

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is proof that the Harry Potter movies have jumped the shark. The latest spinoff has a meandering, confused plot, and its screenplay gives its cast nothing to work with. Although we regret having to watch this movie, it gave us a lot to talk about, including the strange politics of the Wizarding World, the hubris of authoritarianism, and more. Hear about all this, and our expectations for Thor: Love and Thunder on this episode

Sean and Jen ventured to the dystopian nightmare-world of Los Angeles to watch “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” and despite their less-than-ideal experience, the movie itself was amazing. In this episode, they talk with Paul about why this movie succeeds because it actually cares about what its fans want. It also features a positive, heroic main character who also has flaws. Who should watch this movie? Do you need to have watched the original “Sonic the Hedgehog”? WHAT YEAR IS IT!? When we woke up this morning, we thought it was either the 80s or 00s. Why? Because “The Lost City” is the best rom-com we’ve seen since those eras. Starring Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt, and Daniel Radcliffe, The Lost City is a story of lost love, vine-swinging adventure, and reclamation. The humor was non-woke and non-forced, the plot was incredibly tight, the casting was choice, and the experience was wonderfully entertaining. Listen to Sean and Jen’s full discussion on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

If the intent of Pixar’s new release “Turning Red” was to do exactly that to its audience, then mission accomplished. We did turn red — with anger and frustration over a muddled movie. Don’t get us wrong, it was beautiful and had some touching themes, but the execution made the movie feel like they copied Encanto and made it worse. Specifically, they tried to cram way too much into the Red Panda metaphor. What could have been a tear-jerking masterpiece was a one-sniffle-max passive piece of entertainment.

If you haven’t had enough of Ryan Reynolds yet, you’re in luck. In Netflix’s new film, The Adam Project, there’s two of him. Without spoiling too much, in 2022 Adam Reed (Reynolds) accidentally crash-lands from the future and reconnects with his 12-year-old self to save the world. Hijinks, hilarity, and heavy emotions ensue. The plot seemed incredible on paper, but the execution of the movie left us a little unsatisfied. Join Sean, Paul, and Daphne for a rip-roaring discussion on the movie, Harry Potter, and more.

Skinny emo guys are having their moment. As if culture has come full circle since the eyeliner-laden, tear-soaked 2000s, it makes perfect sense for Robert Pattinson of sensitive vampire fame to star as Batman. But don’t let the past fool you. The sufficiently-jacked Pattinson puts on a strong, stellar performance in this noir-inspired, mysterious movie. It was a wild ride, but we all viewed it most favorably. Listen to us break it down on this episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

The recent blockbuster “Uncharted,” starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, is disappointingly mediocre. Perhaps that’s not surprising for a video game movie, but it is surprising that it failed at adapting such a classic game series, yet somehow became one of the biggest movies of 2022 so far. Is “Uncharted” trying to be the discount version of Indiana Jones? Why does it fail at storytelling where Indiana Jones succeeded? Why does it generally make no sense, including its retreading of the evil billionaire trope? In the latest episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes, Sean and Paul answer these questions and discuss their reaction to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Amazon Prime’s “Reacher” series is pretty darn good. It’s a faithful replication of “The Killing Floor” by Lee Child, a novel in the Jack Reacher series. Is there anything particularly special about the story, cinematography, or characters? Not really. But the mere fact that the show avoids tired woke tropes and focuses on producing a quality piece of entertainment is all we needed to see. Why is that so rare and what can other directors, producers, and writers learn from it? Listen to Sean, Paul, and Jen answer these questions on this episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

With the shining success of Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, we had similar hopes and expectations for the new Book of Boba Fett series. Yet after a few episodes, that hope turned to disappointment. Full of missed opportunities and poorly-thought-through world-building, The Book of Boba Fett flopped harder than a hunk of wet spam dropped from a skyscraper. Not a pretty picture, right? In celebration of the 50th year of one of the best films ever made, Sean, Paul, and Jen sat down to discuss “The Godfather” and how it holds up in this modern age. Although the length, prolonged discussions, and low tech stick out as a few issues, the greatness of the movie remains without a question. The Crew also discussed how mob violence – and gang violence in general – wouldn’t exist if gambling, drug, and alcohol restrictions were less harsh.

On this episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes, Sean, Paul, and Jen sit down and discuss HBO’s new superhero series: “Peacemaker”. Peacemaker is an offshoot of John Cena’s character in Suicide Squad – a bit of an antagonist – but the show does a good job of making him likeable and understandable. Overall, for superhero stuff, it was pretty funny, out of bounds in a good way, and a decent series.

Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ariana Grande, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill… At this point, you can probably guess that all these actors were in the recent Netflix original, “Don’t Look Up” – a political “satire” directed by Adam McKay.
In the movie, humanity is faced with a dire threat: an extinction-grade meteor headed straight toward earth. Two scientists try to ring the alarm bell, but when they bring the news to the media, politicians, and the public, nobody takes them seriously. Meant to be a parody of the pandemic response and climate change, the movie comes off as more of a rant. It was entertaining and funny at moments, but the commentary didn’t really add up. Sean, Paul, and Jen discuss why on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

On this snowy, special edition of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes, Sean, Paul, and Jen got a chance to sit down with Eshom and Ian Nelms, the directors of Fatman. If you missed last year’s podcast (https://youtu.be/Y70HpY_ru7Q), Fatman is a dark comedy about Chris Cringle (Mel Gibson) contracting with the US military and evading an assassin hired by a 12-year-old salty about receiving coal. (Seriously, watch it now if you haven’t.)
In the podcast, the directors discussed the inspiration for the movie, how it took them over 16 years to bring it to life, the challenges of filming in -36 F weather, and much more. Fill up your nog, grab a cookie, and strap your stockings tight for this special edition of Behind the Scenes.

Despite Disney’s poor track record on acknowledging human rights abuses, their beloved animated movies help carry the company’s high esteem. The latest movie to do so is “Encanto”, a charming story about a magical family living in the mountains of Colombia. A lot of recent entertainment just blends together in a monochrome sludge. But when we sat down and watched “Last Night in Soho” we were quickly blown away. Where have movies like this been?!? Figure out why it breaks the monotonous mould of modern movies on this episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

Continuing Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Eternals” recently dropped and the crew got a chance to see it. As it turns out, it doesn’t bode well for the future of Marvel. It was overproduced, had a convoluted plot, and the acting was pretty poor. But the significance doesn’t end there... Listen to Sean, Paul, and Jen discuss the movie and the fate of Marvel in this episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

We finally decided to watch “Squid Game” after all the requests from our fans and we have some things to say… Is it pure anti-capitalist nonsense? Is it significant social commentary about the raw brutality of humanity? Are the characters deserving of empathy, or do they more or less deserve their situation? When Ted Lasso dropped on Apple TV+ last year, it was a breath of fresh air -- a wholesome, hilarious, and insightful respite in a world of antiheroes, nihilism, and depravity. So when season two dropped, we could hardly wait to watch. Although it fell short of season one’s brilliance, it was still incredibly enjoyable. Why exactly, we discuss in this podcast!

“No Time to Die” was recently released in American theaters, making it the 25th film in the Bond series and the last one to star Daniel Craig. “Paw Patrol: The Movie” may be a libertarian kids movie masterpiece. Set in a place similar to New York City, an unelected, dodgy mayor sends the city into chaos through central planning run amok. The only way to save the day is through a private group of heroes and a dog named liberty. Yeah, if you want your kids to pick up on the theme that government = bad, watch this movie with them. Often on this podcast, we harp about remakes, rehashed movies, and #content. While theaters were vacant throughout the pandemic, it makes sense that movies were safe, guaranteed wins. But recently as things open up, a few more bold, unique movies are being released. Some, like “The Green Knight”, may be too bold.
The film is about Sir Gawain, a nephew of King Arthur who lives a lazy, hedonistic life. His honor and courage has never been tested before and as he matures, he realizes he must do something big to step into manhood.
While the movie's themes of embarking on a hero’s journey and adopting responsibility are refreshing to see, the movie gets bogged down in confusion and artiness, making it difficult to follow along. Join Paul, Sean, and Jen as they discuss what was excellent, unique, confusing, and odd about “The Green Knight” on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

For movie lovers, the past few years have been an understandable disappointment, but as the world opens back up and people inhabit theaters again, that trend just might reverse. At least it looks like the case with “Stillwater”.
Starring Matt Damon and loosely based off the real-life Amanda Knox story, an American oil worker embarks on a journey to France to help exonerate his daughter falsely imprisoned for murder. What are the executives at Netflix up to these days? Judging by their newest creations, checking a lot of boxes and checking their originality at the door. Their latest drama series, “Sweet Tooth” fits the pattern.
In the series, based on a comic book, a virus wipes out a large amount of the population and fosters the emergence of part-human, part-animal hybrid babies. The plot itself isn’t so bad, but jamming in “socially acceptable” woke tropes anywhere you can, and emphasizing dictation over demonstration makes the show unbearable.

Disney and Pixar’s latest film “Luca” is cute as heck and takes a refreshing, honest, and straightforward approach to thematic family storytelling.

What do you get when you mix Dawn of the Dead, Ocean’s Eleven, and Alien? Well… You get stunning reviews like, “It’s 2.5 hours of your life that you’ll never get back” and “Not great, probably not worth it.”
Yeah… Please don’t waste your time on Netflix’s newest original “Army of the Dead”—written and directed by Zack Snyder. But if you like mindless fun and beautiful cinematography, maybe you at least won’t hate yourself after watching.
Besides the movie, Sean, Paul, and Jen discussed what new shows they’re watching, why anime isn’t a genre, the lab leak hypothesis, COVID finally retreating, and a lot more on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

A brand new family movie “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” just dropped on Netflix… If you and your family are looking for something to watch, this one’s for you. It was cute, fun, light-hearted, and fosters a few laughs. That said, it falls prey to some common tropes, like Big Tech is bad and so is automation. What did we like about it? What was cliché about it? Why is Paul so excited about Culver’s? Join Sean, Paul, and Jen as they discuss all this more on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

Michael B Jordan? Check. Tom Clancy super plot? Check. CIA corruption? Check. Decent movie? Negatory.
The newest action flick to hit Amazon Prime, “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse”, was poised for success but ended up being atrocious, without a doubt. It really had no business being as lackluster as it was. What was it that the movie lacked? How do you even fail to deliver a movie that’s set up on a silver platter? It’s been a cinematically dystopian time to be alive, so what better way to commemorate the (hopeful) ending of the weirdness than by watching “Love and Monsters”—the perfect movie for 2021.
In “Love and Monsters”, an asteroid is headed toward earth threatening death and destruction, but humans launch a bomb at it, successfully preventing a disaster. Yet, a disaster of another kind happens… fallout from the detonation rains on earth, turning all of the cold-blooded animals into gigantic, monstrous creatures.
95% of the population is decimated and the few that remain live underground, including Joel, who’s been living in an underground bunker for 7 years. Joel eventually makes his way above ground, in a courageous acceptance of the world he inhabits.
What themes and lessons can we take away from Joel’s journey as we move forward in our own lives? Join Sean, Paul, and Jen as they discuss all this and more in this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

Amazon Prime found success with its superhero series, “The Boys,” and it looks like the success will continue with its animated adult series, “Invincible.” In this world, Mark Grayson is your average teenage dude with an extraordinary father, Omni-Man, who possesses incredible superhuman capabilities. Omni-Man teaches Mark how to be a superhero, and the two go through a journey of connection, disconnection, bonding, and betrayal.

It’s no secret that America’s “War on Drugs” has put a lot of non-violent people behind bars, ballooning the prison population and disenfranchising communities across the country. In this movie based on a true story, Rick Wershe is a 15-year-old boy who gets wrapped up in drug dealing when the US government uses him to purchase cocaine for them. Soon enough, his exploits land him with a lofty prison sentence, longer than murderers and violent offenders.

In movies, when a conniving criminal preys on the most vulnerable, the end result is usually that they get what they deserve--or at least one would hope. But sometimes, a movie ignores common convention and lets their villains get away with literal murder to make a political point.

For being an American cultural staple, it should be easy to create a Superman movie that isn’t trash, yet Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” manages to bend under its own weight like a piece of wet spaghetti. In this era of cinema, it’s rare that a film gets made about a topic that hasn’t been covered before. HBO Max’s ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ is one of those films. Portraying the Black Panther party in 1960s Chicago, this film does a good job of accurately depicting a historical episode that also has relevance to today. That being said, there’s a lot “right” with this film, but there’s also some “wrong.” What exactly? We’ll leave it to hosts Jen and Paul to discuss on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

What do you get when you bring an American football coach to the United Kingdom to run a Premier League soccer team? In this delightful Apple TV+ original series, Ted Lasso grapples with connecting to a sport and characters positioned against him, but gracefully finds his way forward.

With woke culture being so prevalent, a lot of shows, movies, and games suffer from a politically-incentivized lack of originality. It makes for a monotonous experience, with content never really pushing the bounds at the mercy of a ravenous mob.
However, a new Apple TV+ series hilariously mocks the behind-the-scenes decision-making of content creators catering to woke demands. “Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet,” depicting a narcissistic video game developer, pushes the envelope in an original and non-reactionary way.

The pandemic hasn’t been exactly great for movies, with film companies either delaying or halting production on box office bangers, but streaming services have picked up the slack with fresh, killer content in the world of original series and documentaries. (Tiger King may have led the way). Disney+ captured success with ‘The Mandalorian’ and they continue to win with ‘WandaVision’—a Marvel world continuation featuring Wanda Maximoff and Vision picking up where ‘Avengers: Endgame’ left off. The Crew thought the series was very enjoyable, wove in 50s cultural aesthetics in a pleasing way, and had a tantalizing amount of mystery to it. What does the show do so well? To kick off the new year, we decided to watch a new movie, ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’ Though this was shown in theaters, it also hit HBO Max upon its release—which could be the start of an interesting new trend. The only problem is, it was incredibly bland. That the movie occurs in 1984 seems hardly connected to the plot, there is too much going on at once, and for an action movie, there’s not a whole lot of action. What did we dislike about it? If you ever had a pompous English teacher, chances are you’ve seen one of two movies: ‘Dead Poets Society’ or ‘Mr. Holland’s Opus.’ Since the latter touches on themes of appreciation and gratitude, we decided to give the 1995 film a spin and see how it holds up during 2020’s Thanksgiving season. As we found, it’s not nearly as great as we remembered. Why not? Why doesn’t the movie make a lot of sense? What made the music and sequence so poor? Why did Paul hate it from start to finish? Is Mr. Holland just a bad parent? Join Sean, Paul, and Jen as they discuss all this and more on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

Although this Netflix show revolves mostly around a female chess prodigy in the 1960s, ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ is much more than that. It touches on themes of religion, communism, and human nature. For that reason, it sails high above other self-produced streaming clichés. What does this show say about the line between genius and psychosis? What does it say about the power of obsession? What makes it more grandiose than other streaming shows? Join Sean, Paul, and Jen as they discuss all this and more on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.

What do you get when you cross Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Alcatraz, and a biochemical weapons attack? Well, one of the most glorious, over-the-top action movies of all time.
Released in 1996, ‘The Rock’ still stands as one of Sean’s favorite action movies, and for good reason. And as Paul notes, it’s one of those movies you can flip on cable and jump in at any moment, and find it enjoyable. What did we like about it? Why is it so insanely quotable? What does it say about the treatment of US veterans? Why is it essentially James Bond? Movie voice: In a world… plagued by anti-heros, gritty backdrops, and nihilistic plotlines, one series stands to challenge it all… Coming to your living room this Fall is Disney+’s ‘The Mandalorian.’
This week, the crew met virtually again to discuss (as you can guess) ‘The Mandalorian.’ It seems like every show or movie these days is saturated with over-the-top edginess, but with Mando and Baby Yoda (OK, “The Child”) we get something refreshing and simple. What did we like so much about it? What does it offer that other shows lack? Will it save Star Wars as a franchise? What does it mimic from Spaghetti Westerns? Very nice!... NOT!
After watching ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ the crew felt a bit unsettled. The reason? It was pushing a political narrative that just did not fit. Even Paul (who loved the first Borat when it came out in 2006) thought it was one of the worst movies he’s ever seen… In addition, Sean thinks this style of comedy is unethical and uncomfortable. Also, Jen is back and has thoughts too!
What did the first Borat get right that the sequel got wrong? What made it so unbearable and unsettling? Was there anything enjoyable about it? What actually happened in that Rudy Giuliani scene? We’ve watched too many silly movies for the month of October, so this week we decided to turn the spooky notch all the way up to 11 with Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining.’ It was really good, really scary, and we already want to rewatch it. Look, a Bill & Ted movie is never going to bring hard-hitting philosophy or science-based temporal theory to the table, but what you can count on is that it’s going to be a lighthearted romp of a story, and the latest installment, ‘Bill & Ted Face The Music’ is no exception. Welcome to the very first episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes, the brand-new, weekly podcast based on the YouTube series, Out of Frame. This week, the crew watched the 1997 film adaptation of Starship Troopers. Was it really a nationalist/fascist propaganda piece? Did our hero, Johnnie Rico, learn what he was supposed to learn? Where did the movie succeed and where did it fail? Sean, Jen, and Paul talk about this and more on this week’s episode of Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes.
