It's 2018 and that means it's time for a mid-term election. Typically, the party in power loses seats and polling shows that the House might be in Jeopardy for Republicans. Recent special elections and polling shows that Republicans are not doing well with younger voters. Democratic voters are highly motivated and pressing hard.
In this podcast episode I present 8 suggestions to Republicans to present a positive face to independent and younger voters for the good of the party. Just click above to listen.

What does it mean to be a Republican today?
Is a Republican a follower of President Trump? Is a Republican anyone who votes against Democrats? Is a Republican defined by a certain set of beliefs?
In the current environment, there is a lot of disagreement about what makes one a Republican. This podcast episode won't end that discussion, but I present my thoughts on what a Republican is.
I argue that being a Republican is not just about following a leader. I believe a Republican is about upholding liberty and promoting prosperity through free markets and personal resposibility.
What type of Republican are you?
An Establishment Republican? A Reagan Republican? A Trump Republican? Others?
A few weeks ago the "March for Science" was held in Washington D.C. The purpose of the March was billed as an effort to stand up for science and protect science against ignorant politicians. So of course the March was basically an Anti-Trump Protest.
Marchers hurled a lot of insults against Republicans in general. This was a continuation from the Presidential campaign of attacking the right as being "anti-science." There have even been calls to arrest people who disagree with the consensus view on Global Warming.
In this episode I review the question: "Is the GOP Anti-Science?"
Or is this all just another exercise of the left portraying itself as the good guys and anyone on the right as "the bad guys?"
In this episode I discuss the Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare. Topics include:

Hey Everyone!
It's the return of the TalkGOP Podcast! Due to a health crisis with my wife and a long commute to work, I had to suspend the podcast for a while. But,... my wife is better (doing great actually) and a new job has eliminated my lengthy commute.
In this podcast I give a brief overview of my thoughts about the election.
Things to celebrate Positive aspects of the elections Negative aspects of the elections Challenges for conservatives going forward.
[pullquote align="normal" cite="Esther 4:12, NKJV"]“Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the king’s palace any more than all the other Jews. For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish.”[/pullquote]
Thus spoke Mordecai to his adopted daughter Esther, when he learned of a plot to kill all of the Jews in the Old Testament book of Esther. Mordecai worried that Esther, who was now queen, would feel she was immune to the coming persecution.
There is a coming persecution to Christians in America. It has already started with the harassment of florists and bakers who refuse to compromise their beliefs to endorse same-sex marriages. Perhaps you, like Esther, feel like this will not concern you. But the progressive left will make it your concern, as explained by Erick Erickson and Bill Blankschaen in their new book, “You Will Be Made To Care.”
“You Will Be Made To Care” (YWBMTC) is an outstanding primer on the topic of religious persecution in America that every lover of religious freedom would benefit from reading.
The book opens with the powerful and inspiring story of Kelvin Cochran, the nationally-recognized African-American fire chief of the city of Atlanta, who is also a devout Christian. A dedicated Bible student and teacher, Chief Cochran wrote a devotional book that encouraged Christian men to behave as Christian men and in one brief passage, admonished them to avoid sexual immorality outside of marriage, such as adultery and homosexuality. This was unacceptable to LGBT activists in Atlanta, who successfully pressured the mayor to fire Chief Cochran.
The lesson from Chief Cochran’s firing is stark. He was fired for simply stating his religious beliefs outside the workplace, in his personal life. If it could happen to him, it could happen to you.
When you think of religious persecution, you may think of Bible stories of being stoned, beaten, thrown in the lion’s den or cast into prison. It is hard for us today to visualize what modern persecution would look like.
“You Will Be Made to Care” provides a look at the future of persecution in the US with detailed examples of discrimination that are happening right now.
Business owners fined by judges Non-profits forced out of providing adoption services and foster care Court ordered silence about religious beliefs Civil lawsuits against individual assets Fraud convictions Students expelled from universities or forced to change belief to obtain degrees Employees demoted at work or fired Pharmacists forced to provide abortion inducting drugs
Based on the actions and statements of anti-religious activists we can expect other consequences in the near future such a loss of tax exempt status for churches and religious organizations, or religious individuals being charged with hate crimes.
[pullquote align="normal"]People should be free to live and work according to their faith without fear of being punished by government. [/pullquote]
Historically, believers have been able to rely on constitutional protections in the First Amendment. YWBMTC contains a detailed discussion of the importance of the First Amendment and the freedom to think as you please.
Unfortunately secular progressives are seeking to redefine our interpretation of First Amendment religious protections. President Obama himself has begun to refer to the “Freedom of Woship” instead of “Freedom of Religion.” This subtle change in terms, the book explains, is intended to limit our expression of religion to the four walls of a church building, but not beyond into the wider society.
Why are leftists doing this? YWBMTC explains in great detail the motivations of the left to compel Christians to conform. In summary, leftists believe in a Utopian view of progress, in which Christians must be made to change in order to achieve human happiness ...
It's a presidential election year. Are you going to be active in politics this year? Many people observe politics, but don't really get involved. In this episode I want to encourage you to take action and make a difference in 2016
People Hate Politics.
They think all politicians and most people involved in politics are liars. They think that politicians are hypocrites, they say one thing and do another. They don't believe that anything people can do will make any difference at all, that the game is rigged. They believe that their fellow citizens don't really care what happens so what's the point in trying to change things? They believe politics is too complicated, that the average person can never really understand the issues and the complications to make a good decision. They don't like the arguing. They just find debate distasteful, so they avoid it. They think it's too negative. Everything they hear in the news is gloom and doom, they tire of it and just stop paying attention.
It's true that politics can be distasteful. But politics is also important. Politics affects nearly every area of our lives, from taxes to defense to our toilets (yes, toilets). And liberals are using politics everyday to pull down our freedoms and way of life
This year, get involved. Volunteer, donate, or run for office.
Your country needs you to make a difference.

A Must Read Book for Conservatives
On this episode of the TalkGOP podcast I review the book "The Conservative Heart" by Arthur Brooks of the American Enterprise Institute.
Conservatives have been slandered by the liberals as uncaring and it's working. Too many Americans believe Republicans are greedy, heartless rich people who don't care about their fellow citizens.
In his book, Arthur Brooks presents a plan to persuade Americans that the conservative approach is best, including:
How the author transformed from a typical liberal musician to a conservative economist. Success of free markets raising people out poverty worldwide Why the pursuit of happiness is more important than the pursuit of money Seeing people as assets, not liabilities. The importance and blessings of meaningful work Why values matter most in lifting people out of poverty The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Conservatives
Let me ask you a simple question. Are you content to just talk about our problems or do you want to make a difference? "The Conservative Heart" is written to improve your skills of persuasion for conservative solutions. I encourage you to listen to the podcast and buy the book.

[pullquote]and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity[/pullquote]
Over the last few weeks I have found myself thinking often of the topic of liberty. Liberty is a distinguishing feature of the United States. It is a feature worth defending in the 2016 election.
Liberty is defined as "freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking etc., according to choice."
Liberty and Liberalism
Today's liberal's, led by the president, have open socialist tendencies. And socialism is anti-liberty. Progressives want to "fundamentally transform the country." And to do that they need to control you. Liberals do not trust the results of liberty, that's why they are always trying to specify the outcome.
In this episode I discuss three main actions the GOP congress needs to pursue to set a successful liberty agenda in 2016:
Re-establish trust with conservative and liberty minded groups on the right such as the tea party. Pressure President Obama and the Democrat minority to recognize the authority of the U.S. Congress Promote a message to the voting public that Republicans are pro-liberty and Democrats are controlling and unreasonable.

This week on the podcast it's lucky Episode #13. In honor of the 13th Episode I thought we would have a little fun. 13 Ways to Avoid Political Bad Luck.
1. Don't forget your three main points. Especially in public, especially in a big debate, especially in front of the whole country. (See Rick Perry) For more information on making a speech with three main points you can listen to Episode 8 at TalkGOP.com/8.
Don't stand in the rain. William Henry Harrison was elected in 1840. The day that Harrison was sworn into office was rainy and cold, and to make matters worse, the newly elected president chose to deliver his entire 8,444-word speech . A month later he was dead of pneumonia.
Don't talk to Jon Stewart. He's funnier than you, and he is more clever. You can only come out looking dumb.
(This rule only applies to Republicans) Don't have an affair, especially an affair with women who live in another country.
Don't get secretly recorded in private. And NO SELFIES.
Don't have a funny name. And yes, Weiner is a funny name.
Don't be boring. If you are boring, don't have an affair to liven things up. (see Rule #4)
Don't be clueless. If you don't know why you are running, no one else will either.
Don't be Orange. Fake tan, fake hair, cheap suit. Don't look fake. Or blue.
Don't wear Stupid Hats . Especially if you have a funny name. Like Dukakis. Or John Kerry
Don't talk about rape.
Don't LIE. Read my lips, if you like your insurance you can keep it.
DON'T BE DUMB. If you think islands can tip over maybe congress isn't for you. [divider ]

On the show this week I discuss 8 things the Average Voter Should Know About Obamacare.
Healthcare is a limited resource. And therefore it must be allocated. Healthcare and Health Insurance are not the same thing. Obamacare is not free Obamacare was sold under false pretenses. Obamacare will Not reduce the actual cost of health care (even if it spends less) Obamacare will not increase the availibility of health care. Government supply of health care is not morally superior. Mandated Government health care is a threat to individual liberty.

This week on the podcast I take a look at free speech rights of the religious. Do the religious have a right to engage in political debate? Or should they keep their opinion to themselves?
Lately on social media I keep getting into debates where I hear comments like this:
Religious people can be individually religious. They can NOT impose their ridiculous personal belief systems on others. No one is calling for those people who MUST have the psychological crutch of religion to maintain their cowardly existence in a sane, civilized manner to leave that religion. Simply keep your delusional beliefs to yourself. Exercise your civil rights only to the extent of where other people's civil rights begin. Do not attempt to force your delusional beliefs on others who do not need your superstition to maintain sanity. I have a big problem with words like "MORAL" ,because individual rights should never be restricted by other people's moral beliefs.
These sort of comments seemed to be based on the following assumptions.
Religion should be kept private and has no place in the public sphere. Secular life therefore excludes religion Religious people are somewhat suspect and dangerous Any exercise or religious rights in the public sphere infringes on the rights of others. Laws should not be based on MORAL considerations
To properly address these accusations I think it is important to take a close look at the First Amendment.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances
In this podcast I discuss how the First Amendment protects the rights of the religious to speak out freely and advocate for laws they believe in.
I also discuss why supporting a law BECAUSE of your religious beliefs is not the same thing as IMPOSING YOUR RELIGION, and the fact that all laws impose on others by definition.
Has this happened to you? Leave a comment below with your experience on trying to discuss your positions that involved religion or morals.

The U.S. congress is currently engaged in an attempt to pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform. It seems to me that the debate and news coverage has centered around which personality can come up with a secret backroom deal that can pass. In this episode, I attempt to redirect the discussion back to some basic questions about the immigration debate:
How many immigrants should come to the U.S. each year? Who should we allow to immigrate? What are some of the factors that affect our decisions about who is allowed to come to America? Are those who oppose the Comprehensive Immigration bill necessarily racist? Why do people feel so strongly about the amnesty question? How important is future enforcement of the law?
I would love to hear your thoughts about the immigration issue, especially on how Republicans should approach and talk about immigration. Send me your thoughts at: feedback@TalkGOP.com or just click on the microphone to the right to leave me a voice message.

I thought about naming this episode "537 Reasons Why Your Political Speech Should Have 3 Main Points" but I was afraid it would scare you away. But how often have you heard a speech that seemed like it had 537 points? This seems to especially be the case with political speeches. In today’s episode I want to encourage you that the next time you have to give a speech try to limit yourself only three main points.
Now in keeping with this advice I am going to structure the podcast today with three main points. We are going to talk about the following three main points.
Why you should use only three main points. Reasons why people use more (many more) than three points How to structure your speech using three main points.
Reasons to use only three main points
It’s easy for you to organize and remember your speech. Three points is an easy number for your audience to remember. Three points is enough to show your competence. You don’t want to bore/annoy/frustrate your audience. Emphasize strong points.
Reasons why speakers use more than three points
The speaker is unprepared. The speaker is trying to impress. Because the speaker is insecure and is trying to “prove” themselves to the audience. If some proof is good, even more is better right? The endless resume “I’m a good speaker”
How the three point speech works
Obviously the structure of a three point speech is fairly straight forward.
Introduction Main Point One - Supporting Points Main Point Two - Supporting Points Main Point three - Supporting Points Summary and Conclusion Shut Up
The three points allow you to develop contrast. Typically you would arrange three points like this.
Strong Point Weaker Point Strongest Point
Another form of three point speech addresses a specific problem and solution.
Problem Statement Compounding Problem Solution
Regardless of what form you use, pick three points that are relevant to your audience and deliver with confidence!

On the next show I am going to be discussing why your political speech should only contain three main points. If you have a question or comment on how to deliver a political speech, leave me some feedback.

It's a new year! In this episode we discuss planning and setting goals for your local Republican party or other conservative group.
I recommend you get together and do this as a group using a method outlined in the excellent book:
Your Best Year Yet by Jenny Ditzler (Amazon Affiliate Link)
The Best Year Yet method has you answer a series of questions to set your goals. 1. What did your party accomplish? Look back over the last year and make a list of everything you accomplished. For example:
Did you elect new candidates? Did you open a headquarters? Did you host a great fundraising event? Did you start using Twitter or Facebook to promote your party?
Try to make a complete list of all the things you did and that you feel good about accomplishing. It is important to give yourself some credit. Politics is hard business and it is easy to get discouraged, especially if you lost a few campaigns.
Candidate Recruitment Fundraising Volunteer Management Campaign Events Precinct Captains Headquarters Media Relations
Try to make a comprehensive listing of different roles that must be accomplished in your org. Each of these roles will have specific goals and tasks that need to be accomplished. These roles also present a good opportunity to assign as responsibility to specific individuals or committees. 7. Which Role Will be our Major Focus?
Looking back at your accomplishments and disappointments you identified earlier, you should be able to identify a role that you would like to see improved. Or maybe as you look ahead, you can identify certain roles will be very important in the upcoming election cycle. 8. What are our goals for each role? This the fun part. Begin to brainstorm goals for each of your identified roles. At this point, no goals is to outrageous or mundane. Just throw those ideas out on the table and get them recorded. After you have the ideas captured, go back through and identify the better goals for each role. You likely won't be able to focus on all the possible goals you have identified, so try to combine and limit your list to around 5 to 6 for each role.
Also make sure your goals are written using the SMART acronym. A good goal is Specific, Measurable, Action Oriented, Relevant, and Time Limited 9. Identify your top 10 goals for your organization. You can only do so much. you are more likely to have success if you focus in on just a few most important goals. Even 10 goals may be too many for a volunteer organization. You may want to pick 3 top goals that you want to commu...

Republicans must compete with ideas and principles.
Republicans must expand the playing field.
