The Neverending Minute is a podcast that will break down the 1984 Classic movie “The Neverending Story” one minute at a time, 5 days a week. Join us on the adventure of a lifetime into Fantasia as we explore every second and learn more than we ever thought we could know about this wonderful piece of nostalgia.
In this episode Thomas and Tierney interview Tami Stronach, who plays the Childlike Empress in The NeverEnding Story!
We also congratulate Tierney and Patrick on the birth of a health baby boy!
Thomas is back, to introduce his new podcast: X-Minutes, doing a scene-by-scene analysis and discussion of Marvel’s Mutant Movies, starting with 2000’s X-Men.
In this episode we talk about minute 94 of The NeverEnding Story:
Could this be the end of The Neverending Minute? But that's impossible! Pete and Alex of Star Wars Minute join your hosts for minute 94 (94) and to bid farewell to the first season of this podcast.
In this episode we talk about minute 93 of The NeverEnding Story:
Bobby Flores (who runs Growler Media) checks in on Thomas and Tierney as they point out their last favorite names and job titles in the credits and he joins the debate of what an editorial librarian does. Then all 3 of us take a deep dive into the posts of our listener society, thanking those who participated and sharing our favorite observations. We also thank all our guests from the show and have a laugh over our google search analytics. Don't forget to tune in tomorrow to find out if this podcast truly is neverending! Check out Bobby on Beauty and the Beastly Minute, the LDS Dating podcast, and twitter
In this episode we talk about minute 92 of The NeverEnding Story: Tierney finally learns that "BVK" stands for in these credits... OR DOES SHE? Thomas shouts out the casting crew that found all our favorites while we're both obsessed with Twyla Weixl's name. The episode finishes out with the reading of all our reviews
In this episode we talk about minute 91 of The NeverEnding Story: Mike Carlucci is back and he has finally seen the movie The NeverEnding Story! After guessing what the story would be about during his week of guesting, Mike tells us his impression of the film overall. Tierney gets in a last bit of movie analysis by trying to identify these last three buildings while Thomas gives us one more crazy theory: Artax as Padme.
Check out Mike Carlucci on Return to Oz Minute
In this episode we talk about minute 90 of The NeverEnding Story:
Super long dad joke today, Pam the social media extraordinaire, our last full minute of action, another Falkor favorite, Falkor is into terrorizing these kids, what's he going to do?!?, "bully radar", Tierney realizes it's the next morning and finally feels bad for Major Dad, terrified people on the street analysis, more exploration of this Vancouver location, the physics of Falkor's flying, synchronized dumpster diving, Pinhead Power, our last new Alan Oppenheimer character
In this episode we talk about minute 89 of The NeverEnding Story: It IS Steve Lastoe, back for another day of guesting with us from The Princess Bride Minute (and the future X-Minutes podcast), He's here to quote Hamilton with Thomas and explain why for years he had no interest in watching this movie. Meanwhile Tierney points out that Falkor is 100% down to traumatize Bastian's bullies. Tune in for a terrible Canadian accent and our discovery of the BC Place Stadium as well as more favorite kids-movies-starring-kids.
Be sure to check out our guest: Steve Lastoe from The Princess Bride Minute
In this episode we talk about minute 88 of The NeverEnding Story: Jonathan Carlisle is back for a much happier minute with Thomas and Tierney. After hearing he'll have unlimited wishes, Bastian decides the most important thing is to get to ride Falkor, of course. Thomas and Tierney are thrilled to have Joanthan back to talk about how there's always a catch with wishes, to ponder what happened to these resurrected characters when they were taken by The Nothing, and to share our top 3 kids-movies-starring-kids movies.
Be sure to check out our guest: Jonathan Carlisle from The Princess Bride Minute
In this episode we talk about minute 87 of The NeverEnding Story:
The hosts of The Princess Bride Minute have messed with our minds once again! Today we're joined by Steve Lastoe who helps set us straight about how little our movies actually have in common. According to our guest, this is the most important scene and we have a very interesting time analyzing the symbolism of the Empress giving Bastian the seed to create the new Fantastia. Tierney's lack of make-up knowledge is exposed as we spend another minute admiring the job that Tami Stronach did in this movie before discussing how the wishes to create Fantasia will work. Be sure to check out our guest: Steve Lastoe from The Princess Bride Minute
In this episode we talk about minute 86 of The NeverEnding Story: This minute is so packed that we just skip right over the part where Jonathan Carlisle staged a coup against his Princess Bride Minute co-host Steve to get to guest today. Tierney expresses her anger over Bastian's naming choice for the Empress because she grew up thinking the whole point was to not know her new name. The boys try to make it better by introducing her to the idea of Barbara Reading Bux who just had a cute nickname from her husband. Then Bastian takes us to the Empress only for Thomas to break out in problems! Tune in if you love talk of gravitational pull, light sources, and have always wondered what happened in the book. (Hint: It's totally different from this!)
Be sure to check out our guest: Jonathan Carlisle from The Princess Bride Minute
In this episode we talk about minute 85 of The NeverEnding Story: What happened to Jonathan? What happened to Atreyu?! Thomas has Tierney and Steve Lastoe of The Princess Bride Minute to emotionally support him as he has to watch The Childlike Empress cry. Steve brings some excellent discussion of universe building and destruction as well as the fun observation that perhaps we're watching a young Jim Carrey. This minute brings us right up to the moment when Bastian will CALL HER NAME!
Be sure to check out our guest: Steve Lastoe from The Princess Bride Minute
In this episode we talk about minute 84 of The NeverEnding Story:
Dean of LSG Media podcast and Jonathan-guest-host-extraordinare-Carlise are back for one more day to discuss the unfortunate destruction of the Ivory Tower around the Childlike Empress and Atreyu. One more day to be impressed by her calmness in the face of her own mortality, one more day to critique the questionable special effects of these space rocks exploding, one more day to wonder how much it will take to get Bastian to actually embrace his destiny. Be sure to check out our guests: Jonathan Carlisle from The Princess Bride Minute, and Dean from LSG Media
In this episode we talk about minute 83 of The NeverEnding Story:
After Dean expresses his appreciation for Thomas's dad jokes and Jonathan manages to rhyme his notes for the minute, they get down to analyzing the minute in which the Empress and Atreyu worry that "basically the chosen one is kind of a dum dum". There's more information from the book, another disturbing Georgia O'Keeffian interpretation of the Ivory Tower, and TWO name drops of the movie's title by the characters. Be sure to check out our guests: Jonathan Carlisle from The Princess Bride Minute, and Dean from LSG Media
In this episode we talk about minute 82 of The NeverEnding Story:
The boys are asking the REAL questions today: Why are there stars? How many neverending Neverending Stories are there? Has Bastian been The Nothing this whole time? How badly does Atreyu need to pee by now? As Bastian begins to realize that the Empress is talking about him, the destruction of Fantasia increases and forces Barret Oliver to give us his best Darth Vader impression. Meanwhile Atreyu is accused of being whiny, but really he's just been through a lot by this point (and maybe has to pee). Be sure to check out our guests: Jonathan Carlisle from The Princess Bride Minute, and Dean from LSG Media
In this episode we talk about minute 81 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas, Jonathan and Dean are back for "a big Keaunu Reeves minute" as we meet Tami Stronach playing the Childlike Empress. Tierney is thrown under the "crush on Atreyu" bus in her absence, but all the boys are impressed by this new character. Within the movie, Atreyu's here to break the bad news that he has failed but the Empress seems to know something he doesn't. Be sure to check out our guests: Jonathan Carlisle from The Princess Bride Minute, and Dean from LSG Media
In this episode we talk about minute 80 of The NeverEnding Story:
"Go on" Falkor says with a wink, and we're off on a week that gets very meta very fast. We consists of Thomas, guest Dean of LSG Media, and... wait a second! And Jonathan Carlisle, stepping in while Tierney's away. The boys spend plenty of time debating if Bastian is manly enough to eat an apple core, what exactly Atreyu entering the Ivory Tower represents, and if there was a way Falkor could have said he liked children without being creepy. Be sure to check out our guests: Jonathan Carlisle from The Princess Bride Minute, and Dean from LSG Media
In this episode we talk about minute 79 of The NeverEnding Story:
Today's minute is "mostly Ivory Tower hero shot" so Thomas, Tierney, and guest Brad have a wonderful time talking tangents: kids are gross, people used to hold tape recorders up to TV speakers to "record" a movie, debating if Jersey Girl was a good movie, and the complicated legacies of creators like Joss Whedon.
Check out Brad Mendenhall on the Minute of Darkness and Cosmic Geppetto podcasts
In this episode we talk about minute 78 of The NeverEnding Story:
Falkor and Atreyu use the Auryn to see if the Ivory Tower still standing amidst this space rubble. Thomas sees another Star Wars reference, Tierney finally understands how the Auryn is glowing, and Brad Mendenhall of the Cosmic Geppetto Podcast is back to talk about what a good friend Falkor is and explain the idea of "idiot plot".
Check out Brad Mendenhall on the Minute of Darkness and Cosmic Geppetto podcasts
In this episode we talk about minute 77 of The NeverEnding Story:
How on earth is Falkor resisting flying into The Nothing? Check out Brad Mendenhall on the Minute of Darkness and Cosmic Geppetto podcasts
In this episode we talk about minute 76 of The NeverEnding Story:
Brad of the Cosmic Geppetto podcast is back for this emotional roller coaster of a minute. Atreyu flees after killing Gmork, then Falkor goes for a swim to save the Auryn, then The Nothing threatens to suck up Atreyu (like a tornado). Brad's response to Thomas describing how they filmed the action scene: "This could not happen now." Check out Brad Mendenhall on the Minute of Darkness and Cosmic Geppetto podcasts
In this episode we talk about minute 75 of The NeverEnding Story:
Brad's here! No, for real this time! Brad Mendenhall of Minute of Darkness and the Cosmic Geppetto podcast joins us for the craziest fight scene you don't get to see. Atreyu slays Gmork (making all of Thomas's dreams come true) and Tierney cries her way through his death twitches. We talk about fight scenes, violence, and how much blood you can actually get away with in a children's movie. Check out Brad Mendenhall on the Minute of Darkness and Cosmic Geppetto podcasts
In this episode we talk about minute 74 of The NeverEnding Story:
Gmork explains that he has been helping the Nothing and the audience realizes the only hope to save Fantasia is if Bastian refuses to give up his hopes and dreams. We have so much fun on our last day with Gary and Victoria talking about Big Bads, sidekicks, stories that loop, and the movies that make us nostalgic for childhood. We do get deep again talking about the depiction of depression in this story but end with some happy Harry Potter talk. Check out Gary and Victoria on the Harry Potter Minute and Ferris Bueller’s Minute Off
In this episode we talk about minute 73 of The NeverEnding Story:
Gary and Victoria of Harry Potter Minute are back for the minute that proves this movie can do villian exposition right, and we blow Gary's mind talking about magical books (go figure). Gmork tells Atreyu about The Nothing, his role in the end of Fantasia, and basically informs Atreyu that he isn't real. On a less weighty note, we have some more puppet appreciation today.
In this episode we talk about minute 72 of The NeverEnding Story:
Keep the lights on! In the movie, Gmork and Atreyu begin a conversation that the entire explanation of the movie pivots on. In the studio, Tierney discusses the abilities of werewolves in the book versus the movie, Gary drops some Norse mythology knowledge on us, and Thomas tries to distract Victoria by talking about horror movies that DO NOT have Gmork in them. Spoilers for (at least) Final Destination and Meet Joe Black. Check out Gary and Victoria on the Harry Potter Minute and Ferris Bueller's Minute Off
In this episode we talk about minute 71 of The NeverEnding Story:
Atreyu finds himself surrounded by artwork depicting the events of his quest. (He didn't chose the quest life; the quest life chose him!) We put on our art critic hats to talk about these murals, and Victoria and Gary bring their expertise from Harry Potter Minute to debate if Gmork is a Grim.
In this episode we talk about minute 70 of The NeverEnding Story:
Gary Roby Jr. & Victoria Laguna from the Harry Potter Minute join Thomas and Tierney to talk about another one of the saddest minutes in the movie.
In this episode we talk about minute 69 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas and Tierney are joined one more time by Mike Carlucci of the Return to Oz Minute podcast and he learns a lot more about what he missed earlier in the movie. He gives us the great line "Now this is snail racing!" and saves the day when we judge Atreyu for calling Falkor "his luckdragon" by explaining Falkor is just like an Uber or Lyft. After we debate how The Nothing works, Mike gives us his sum up of what this movie is and Thomas makes him an offer he doesn't refuse.
In this episode we talk about minute 68 of The NeverEnding Story:
Mike Carlucci thought this "rock man" sounded familiar and discovers the magic that is Alan Oppenheimer's listing of credits. After realizing that he knows that voice "from literally everything", we go on to discuss Return to Oz crossovers and Rock Biter's apparent need for Tough Actin' Tinactin.
In this episode we talk about minute 67 of The NeverEnding Story:
Atreyu wakes up on a beach sans Auryn and begins shouting for Falkor. Mike Carlucci is back to tell us what he thinks is going on (having never seen the movie before) and talks with Tierney and Thomas about werewolves, East Coast beaches, and the detailed history of that victory arch in the background. Tierney tries to convince him everything is going to be just fine with those giant pawprints in the sand, but the sad Top Gun music is back...
In this episode we talk about minute 66 of The NeverEnding Story:
Mike Carlucci is back for "another amazing minute" with these impressive storm clouds. The plot makes Atreyu fall, and Bastian fights a window in the attic. Thomas and Tierney took basically the same notes for this minute, but no one could foresee the amazing knee-hurting challenge that ensues among our hosts.
In this episode we talk about minute 65 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas and Tierney are joined by Mike Carlucci of Return to Oz Minute and he's NEVER SEEN this movie! We have fun explaining that the flying dog isn't really a dog at all, that Bastian and Atreyu are two different kids, and talk special effects with our guest. We also give a shout out to the sound editors even as a sound Thomas swears he heard causes controversy in the attic...
Sorry for the delay in getting out new episodes!
We had an issue with our hosting provider and had to switch. Because of this you may have downloaded old episodes again as if they were new, sorry!
We should be returning to our regular publishing schedule now, so enjoy and be sure to leave us a review on iTunes.
In this episode we talk about minute 64 of The NeverEnding Story:
Atreyu and Falkor are soarin' over Fantasia for literally all of this minute. Ralph from Cake Boss drops by one more time to sing for us and to ask the real questions: How is Falkor propelled to fly? Why wasn't there a spinoff movie with the Night Hob? And most importantly: What are you riding in a race across Fantasia?
In this episode we talk about minute 63 of The NeverEnding Story:
The Southern Oracle is destroyed (or is it?) but Atreyu is back on the quest and ready to find the boundaries of Fantasia with Falkor. If only either of them had any idea where those are... In the studio we bid a fond farewell to the Bloobs, talk about awkward tonal shifts, and finally define our podcast rating by coining the term "80s PG".
In this episode we talk about minute 62 of The NeverEnding Story:
Forget diamonds: glitter is forever. The Southern Oracle tells Atreyu the empress needs a new name and Tierney encourages audience participation when discussing art styles. Thomas questions if this statue is made of cake while guest Ralph (of Cake Boss) explains Flavor Flav's contributions to the world of film.
In this episode we talk about minute 61 of The NeverEnding Story:
Atreyu passes through the Mirror Gate and sees the Southern Oracle... which looks almost exactly like the Sphinx Gate. Ralph (@cakebossralph on Twitter) is back to introduce us to the concept of "bloobs" and tell us about the cartoon series, the sequels, and the awkwardness of knowing someone who looks like Atreyu in real life. Warning for people uncomfortable with the idea of Steve Buscemi giving you a bath; for some reason that comes up starting at 20:30.
In this episode we talk about minute 60 of The NeverEnding Story:
Ralph from Cake Boss graces our podcast with his presence and gets schooled on the fact that librarians do still exist in the world. After a staring contest with a book, Bastian gets down to some serious reading and totally safely lights many candles in the school attic. Our tangent into X-Men and the casting choices of the tv show MAS*H really did start off naturally by discussing Bastian's possible mutant powers...
In this episode we talk about minute 59 of The NeverEnding Story:
Things have gone too far: Thomas's favorite song is being distorted, books are being thrown about in front of Tierney, and the snow is SO FAKE. But at least we can all agree that Atreyu seeing Bastian in the mirror as his "true self" gives us a lot to talk about. Rick and Julia travel one more time from the baking sun of Australia to the snowy tundra of Fantastia to debate the lessons of this movie.
In this episode we talk about minute 1 of The NeverEnding Story:
Rick and Julia of Mad Max Minute are back to watch Atreyu discover the Mirror Gate, talk about the trouble with navigating Fantasia, and witness Tierney dropping some book knowledge that blows Thomas's mind. We also create one of our darkest theories yet for where this sudden blizzard came from.
In this episode we talk about minute 57 of The NeverEnding Story:
Engywook reports that Atreyu's continuing on his quest while Falkor receives a shot from Dr. Urgl. There's something to make everyone uncomfortable: juicy vitamins, debating how many puppeteers died at the hands of this giant needle, and the mere mention of magical eczema scales. Rick and Julia Ingram are back this minute to help us understand luckdragon medical care and wonder what we're going to see at the second gate.
In this episode we talk about minute 56 of The NeverEnding Story:
Julia and Rick of Mad Max Minute are back to watch Atreyu attempt to pass the sphinx gate. Wolfgang Peterson "does his zoom in thing", everyone is sweating buckets, and we all learn that "be confident" equals "run really fast". Speaking of buckets... hang on Engywook, you're going for a ride!
In this episode we talk about minute 55 of The NeverEnding Story:
It's a new week with new guests but the same reactions to these sphinx statues. Thomas and Tierney welcome Rick and Julia of www.madmaxminute.com to continue the debate of how one gets through this gate and to discuss what Tierney considers the absolutely most terrifying, worst, scariest bit of this whole movie!
In this episode we talk about minute 54 of The NeverEnding Story:
Donnie of MGT podcast joins us one more time to talk about his NeverEnding Story story. Engywook uses his telescope to watch Atreyu walk toward the Sphinx Gate while the hosts analyze the lighting and special effects and, er, more artistic aspects of the statues.
In this episode we talk about minute 53 of The NeverEnding Story:
The black knight does not make it through the gate and we do not make it through this minute without plenty of controversy. Did the horse get away? Where does one get a lance like that? Is this Star Wars or not? Does Engywook have a heart? And did this whole minute set Atreyu up to fail?
In this episode we talk about minute 52 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas and Tierney are joined again by Donnie of the MGT podcast and we have a lot of fun coming up with backgrounds for both this black knight approaching the Sphinx Gate and for Engywook. As Donnie points out, this is a heavy minute if you question his entire hobby of studying the Southern Oracle.
In this episode we talk about minute 51 of The NeverEnding Story:
Brilliance abounds as Thomas, Tierney and Donnie talk about the observatory set and the telescope (which definitely doesn't work but we still all want one). Engywook totally admits that he's just using Atreyu for his research but also gives us some great exposition about how this is only the first gate--which you could probaby get around pretty easily if the whole point of the quest weren't obviously to go through.
In this episode we talk about minute 50 of The NeverEnding Story:
Hang on Engywook, you're going for a ride! Donnie Carr of the More Gooder Than podcast joins us for some beautiful alliteration, an Urgl-powered winch, and some dubious academic credentials.
In this episode we talk about minute 49 of The NeverEnding Story:
Kathleen Mocklin is back for another day of appreciation for the Falkors of the world. We get a little deep talking about the emotional impact of this movie over our lives but also get the giggles and geek out over a very proud female doctor. Speaking of doctors... check out www.cff.org and support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
In this episode we talk about minute 48 of The NeverEnding Story:
Today we meet Patricia Hayes as Urgl, learn how NOT to address your spouse from Engywook, and debate how weird it really is to go visit your parents in your childhood home after you've grown up. Kathleen Mocklin confirms that doctors and dentists do not get along and that everyone loves Noah Hathaway.
In this episode we talk about minute 47 of The NeverEnding Story:
It's good to have a friend as Thomas and Tierney reach the midpoint of the movie. Atreyu decides to trust Falkor and our guest Kathleen Mocklin inspires a new podcast idea with Tierney. Much talk of Sydney Bromley and dental services in Fantasia round out today's episode.
In this episode we talk about minute 46 of The NeverEnding Story:
This minute is full of life lessons: always travel with a luckdragon, it's a jerk move to "well actually" your friends, and it's NEVER ok to watch someone sleep. Also Falkor makes a dad joke that of course only Thomas catches. Guest Kathleen Mocklin talks about her work for the amazing Cystic Fibrosis Foundation https://www.cff.org/
In this episode we talk about minute 45 of The NeverEnding Story:
Kathleen Mocklin joins us to share her love of Falkor and the 25 puppeteers and Alan Oppenheimer who brought him to life. We (along with Atreyu) worry that Falkor might be a creep, but by the end of the minute everyone's on board with this leveled up mount.
In this episode we talk about minute 44 of The NeverEnding Story:
Ryan Clarey of Minute of Darkness joins us one more time to talk ALL about Falkor. (Well, also about Alan Oppenheimer and luckdragons both real and imaginary.)
In this episode we talk about minute 43 of The NeverEnding Story:
Gmork comes so close but Atreyu is saved at the last moment by the creature we know to be Falkor. Spoiler: the effects do not hold up. But there's still a lot for Thomas, Tierney, and our guest Ryan to love as we thwart Gmork, visit the attic, and finally clean up Atreyu!
In this episode we talk about minute 42 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas and Tierney help Ryan Clarey of Minute of Darkness get through a traumaticing minute in which Gmork hunts "Mud Boy" Atreyu in the Swamps of Sadness. Thomas cracks open the secret of these cool clouds in which a white streak appears just when all hope seems lost.
In this episode we talk about minute 41 of The NeverEnding Story:
We have another goodbye today, this time to the real world as Bastian returns to the attic to finish reading The NeverEnding Story. Ryan Clarey (NOT Brad) is back to talk about the many, many, way too many animals and other scary things in this attic before jumping back into Fantasia to meet Gmork.
In this episode we talk about minute 40 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas and Tierney are joined by Ryan Clarey of Minute of Darkness to bid farewell to Morla and go on an adventure out of the attic. We spend a lot of time talking about Bastian's school and analyzing the various works of art in the hallways, but I'm pleased to announce Ryan solves a mystery from earlier in the movie by finally revealing what was in that dumpster!
In this episode we talk about minute 39 of The NeverEnding Story:
As Tierney warns, "This is the most Friday episode that's ever Fridayed." Chris Braaten of the More Gooder Than podcast is back to talk about how deep the death talk in this movie goes for a young audience but also to goad Thomas into as many Hamilton references as possible. You're Welcome!
In this episode we talk about minute 38 of The NeverEnding Story:
Dissension breaks out on the podcast as we argue about what's causing allergy season here in the Swamps of Sadness. Also, Thomas comes up with the most upsetting Artax theory yet, Tierney insists the Care Bears could have solved everything, and guest Chris Braaten makes the case for Atreyu being related to Princess Leia. Tangents include how to survive summer in Bakersfield, CA, podcasts that talk about movies they hate, and how to prevent sneezes.
In this episode we talk about minute 37 of The NeverEnding Story:
Morla hasn't seen the Auryn in a long time (long time) but that doesn't stop us from talking about the amazing work that went into making this puppet sneeze so dramatically. Thomas, Tierney, and guest Chris Braaten from the More Gooder Than podcast are all back to remind you: never grow up or stop using your imagination!
In this episode we talk about minute 36 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas brings the info about Atreyu's stunt double, Tierney laments the movie's lack of Ygramul the Many, and our guest Chris Braaten IDs this as the most important minute of the movie. Morla is finally revealed and Bastian's response is to scream so loudly they hear it all the way in Fantasia! Since we don't have any backstory on Bastian's family life, we decide to invent our own.
In this episode we talk about minute 35 of The NeverEnding Story:
We have a new guest this week: Chris Braaten of the More Gooder Than podcast! He's here to help us explore Shell Mountain, make fun of Bakersfield with Thomas, and summon Morla by saying her name three times.
In this episode we talk about minute 34 of The NeverEnding Story:
Andrew Darowski of Disney Animation Essentials Minute joins us one more time. Bastian recovers from crying over Artax's death and we discuss the books that made us cry. Atreyu finishes his crying and spends the rest of the minute trudging toward Shell Mountain.
In this episode we talk about minute 33 of The NeverEnding Story:
Our brave guest, Andrew Darowski, returns for the saddest scene of the movie. Artax sinks into the Swamps of Sadness and we get serious again about how to help those suffering from depression. (Once again, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 1 800 273 8255 or https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ which has chat, Spanish, and hard of hearing options, and lots more information.)
In this episode we talk about minute 32 of The NeverEnding Story:
Andrew Darowski is back to experience a lot of emotions with Thomas and Tierney. In this minute we learn the Swamps of Sadness are an allegory for depression as we watch Artax begin to sink. We do actual movie analysis and talk about the technical process used to film the horse(s) but all three speakers would like to reiterate the importance of knowing the number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline which is 1 800 273 8255.
In this episode we talk about minute 31 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas grosses us out by describing the creation of the set of the Swamps of Sadness. Andrew Darowski (of @disminute) toughs it out with us. There is a little happiness when we discuss feminism, Star Wars, and linguistics. (It's not a tangent--we got there naturally!)
In this episode we talk about minute 30 of The NeverEnding Story:
We get serious with Andrew Darowski of Disney Animation Minute Essentials and The Protagonist Podcast to talk about Atreyu and Artax entering the Swamps of Sadness. But first we get to see more of Fantasia and hear many musical themes which leads to us coining the term "John Williams Jingle".
In this episode we talk about minute 29 of The NeverEnding Story:
Chris Callaghan is back to close out the week. We enjoy snack time before setting off again on the quest to find a cure for the Empress.
In this episode we talk about minute 28 of The NeverEnding Story:
Tierney tries to coach Thomas and guest Chris Callaghan past their fear of the villainous wolf going after Atreyu. Everyone is able to relax with Artax and Atreyu and talk about their favorite horses.
In this episode we talk about minute 27 of The NeverEnding Story:
Have fun setting off on your quest! Do you think he'll find a cure for the Empress? It'd take a montage of matte paintings. (We also talk music and Limahl with Chris Callaghan.)
In this episode we talk about minute 26 of The NeverEnding Story:
Atreyu is presented with the Auryn and we have a lot of symbolism talk. To see the real one, you'll need to befriend Steven Spielberg, and you can't get a tattoo of one from Noah Hathaway, but you can enjoy talking about the start of the quest with guest Chris Callaghan.
In this episode we talk about minute 25 of The NeverEnding Story:
Atreyu accepts his quest to save the Empress and Fantasia. We're joined by special friend of the podcast, Chris Callaghan.
In this episode we talk about minute 24 of The NeverEnding Story:
Our last day with Scott Carelli of Dueling Genre.
In this episode we talk about minute 23 of The NeverEnding Story:
Scott meets Bastian while we all meet Atreyu, who turns out to be just a kid! Tierney bonds with Gal Gadot over childhood crushes on Noah Hathaway to distract herself from the more scary members of this crowd. We also discuss that most important homage to this movie: the band Atreyu.
In this episode we talk about minute 22 of The NeverEnding Story:
Thomas, Tierney, and Scott Carelli spend some quality time with this cantina-like crowd, naming our favorites and inspiring many nightmares. We are in awe of this film's make-up department for obvious reasons. Our minute ends on a cliffhanger, but the Joseph Campbell jokes have already started.
In this episode we talk about minute 21 of The NeverEnding Story:
We're flying our way through the week with guest Scott Carelli as we meet Cairon (Moses Gunn) and start to analyze this crowd in the Ivory Tower. This minute has all the references, from Georgia O'Keeffe to Star Wars and David Tennant to Zoobilee Zoo.
In this episode we talk about minute 20 of The NeverEnding Story:
We're joined by Scott Carelli of http://www.duelinggenre.com/ to discuss all things Ivory tower, as well as to talk bat puppets and Wolfgang Peterson's career.
In this episode we talk about minute 19 of The NeverEnding Story:
Crystal Beth is back! She's subjected to some questionable special effects and fakey mcfakerstein trees, but she also talks about the possibly greatest matte painting of all time as the Ivory Tower is revealed. Count Ul De Rico makes an appearance as well when we learn about the art department.
In this episode we talk about minute 18 of The NeverEnding Story:
Racing snail talk, among other things
In this episode we talk about minute 17 of The NeverEnding Story:
Despite it being the middle of the night, our heros are taking The Nothing seriously and setting off on adventure. Our guest, Crystal Beth, joins us in appreciation of the production details--from the Night Hob's make-up to the bat's hero shot. Warning if you listen to podcasts at 2X speed: we discuss Northeastern accents and Tierney manages to get even quicker. Life's short, talk fast.
In this episode we talk about minute 16 of The NeverEnding Story:
Crystal Beth (@thecrystalbeth on Twitter and Instagram) is back to answer the real questions about Rock Biters: Do they have septums? Are they related to the Hutts of Tattooine? Do they also think Teeny Weeny is overacting a bit at the end of this minute?
In this episode we talk about minute 15 of The NeverEnding Story:
Crystal Beth of The Fifth Eleminute and Unlimited Lives Radio joins us to talk all things Rock Biter--but we just can't stop looking at the Night Hob's gross feet! We also discuss ADR and childhood fears of puppets in today's episode.
In this episode we talk about minute 14 of The NeverEnding Story:
Minute 14 finally answers all our questions about this literal rock biter. There's a lot of love for all our characters here, even as Tierney worries that her suspension of disbelief is biasing her analysis. Also, a snail sneezes.
In this episode we talk about minute 13 of The NeverEnding Story:
