In this episode of The Brave Enough Show, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt discusses:

  • The unedited, unpolished version of what burnout looked like for me

  • The overfunctioning pattern of what it actually feels like to be boundary-less, saying yes to everything

  • The biggest promise I made to myself, and how it changed everything.

  • How I got well, kept my promise, found health and joy — then discovered something no one had warned me about.

"The version of me that had dreams and desires and knew what she wanted had quietly left the building while I was busy meeting the expectations of everyone around me. I didn't have the words for it then. I just knew that I looked fine. I looked successful. And I did not recognize myself." - Dr. Sasha Shillcutt

  • Why women hate uncertainty

  • The nervous system during transition

  • How to stop rushing clarity

  • Anchoring yourself when there are no answers

"There is a period of time, a few minutes, where you have intubated an hypoxic patient, and the sats are still low. Everyone around you is second-guessing you, because the pulse ox sound is still ominous. But you know the tube is in the trachea…you watched it go in. The worst thing you can do is doubt yourself and pull the tube out. You must remain, even if everyone around you doubts. This is like a transition, and the waiting period. Don't doubt; remain." -Dr. Sasha Shillcutt

  • The power of re-remembering

  • Finding your voice in your 50s

  • Reinventing yourself and leaving past versions behind

"At some point I started to realize I had lived a dream life. I am just not sure it was my dream." - Cy Wakeman

Cy Wakeman:

Drama Researcher, NY-Times Bestselling Author and Leadership Consultant

I am a drama researcher, a career I discovered accidentally and have since quantified how much drama there is in the workplace. Our research has shown that the average employee spends nearly 2.5 hours per day in drama – gossiping, tattling, withholding buy-in, resisting change and stepping down from accountability.

Drama is emotional waste – any unproductive thought or behavior – and like any other waste in the workplace, I believe drama can be eliminated through great mental processes. My work is focused on giving leaders tools to recapture that emotional waste and upcycle it into results.

I started Reality-Based Leadership in order to teach leaders and individual contributors ways to lead in reality that diffuses drama in the workplace. We have formed that into an organization that does leadership development, speaking and training, and publishes unconventional tools and leadership programs to use to diffuse drama in the workplace.

Her work is driven by a deep commitment to helping physicians, especially women in medicine, live empowered and fulfilling lives on their own terms. She believes in fostering a life where women can fully stand in their power and embrace their role as the authors of their own stories.

  • The importance of clarity in becoming brave
  • Knowing what you DON’T want just as much as what you DO want
  • How collecting “data” of past decisions makes you braver
  • Embracing the freedom that comes with failure

Nicole Trick Steinbach is the Founder of Trick Steinbach LLC, the host of the Celebrate Brave podcast, and an International Bravery Coach. She helps women build their bravery and shows them how to stress and work less. After spending nearly 20 years working in tech, Nicole had become a Global Senior Director. She spent 13 years living in Germany, traveling the world, and leading global teams across all functional areas in over 25 different countries. In 2008, even with all of her success, Nicole realized that she felt exhausted, unhappy, and alone. Through coaching, Nicole discovered how her relentless pursuit of an ever-changing definition of “success” was pushing away her support network, deflating her confidence, and driving her to burnout. Over the next ten years, Nicole was able to build her own unique, gorgeous, wonderfully fulfilling life, full of connection and appreciation, rest and joy, safety and wealth. The key was realizing that bravery is a skill that she could intentionally develop and practice. Now she teaches women all over the world to build their own brave. Nicole’s framework of clarity, momentum, and accountability helps her clients set goals and establish the mindset they need to sustain their success. Nicole coaches women to view all of their successes, mistakes, and even failures as equal stepping stones to building their brave life and career. When Nicole isn’t serving her clients you can find her reading a new book, enjoying the outdoors with her two kiddos, and learning with others on her own podcast.

Nothing is more motivating that hearing from women founders who believed they had something special to offer and overcame obstacles to launch an organization, program, business or product! In this episode of the Brave Enough Show, I’m wrapping up this Season by sharing my BIGGEST 3 lessons I’ve learned as a woman entrepreneur. You don’t want to miss it!

  • Ambition is an ugly word if you are a woman

  • Comparison kills authenticity

“Society sees ambition is an ugly characteristic for a woman. You have to get over the fact you will be judged for your ambition and continue to remember your ‘why’ and keep going to be a successful entrepreneur.” Dr. Sasha Shillcutt

Andrea Sager is the CEO and founder of Legalpreneur, a legal tech startup that focuses on offering affordable legal services to businesses of all sizes. While working at a corporate firm, Andrea noticed a gap in the legal industry – no one was catering to the small, innovative start-up brands dominating her social media feeds. That realization led to the development of Legalpreneur. Because legal services should be accessible to everyone.

  • How to take an idea to a product

    • The importance of market research
    • The key to marketing your product
    • The mindset that is critical to business success

Guest Bio: Dr. Olga Lemberg is a board certified pediatrician based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the founder of Fabled, a medical apparel brand that strives to uplift and excite women in medicine through elevated and empowering workwear designs. As a hospital and urgent care-based clinician, Dr. Lemberg came to the realization that existing medical uniforms weren’t serving the needs of women leaders in medicine. She started brainstorming designs post-call after years of wearing scrubs that lacked the sophistication and style she wanted from her uniform. Fabled was built on the belief that style is transformational, and that women in medicine deserve scrubs that genuinely reflect their attitude, style and ambition. Fabled is a small, independently-owned business that has grown organically through word of mouth and now ships to over 6 countries.

Quotes:

“I believed in a few fundamentals in the beginning that have continued to help me: one, that I could trust my sense of style and two, I trusted I could be hella resourceful.” Dr. Olga Lemberg

“Doubting things as an entrepreneur never goes away, you just learn to navigate it.” Dr Olga Lemberg

* How to research the space to launch your product
  • How to honor yourself as an entrepreneur
  • Lessons from a decade of being an entrepreneur

Guest Info:

Dr. Sarah Villafranco spent ten years as an emergency physician. After a decade, she felt frustrated at the lack of emphasis on simple solutions to health issues, like nutrition, exercise, and stress management. After losing her mom to pancreatic cancer at age 64, Sarah took some time off to reevaluate things. She took a class making soap, and fell in love not only with soapmaking, but also with the way her skin felt after using handmade soap. She became obsessed with natural skincare, and locked herself in a room for two years (not really, but almost), studying and teaching herself how to make products. She launched Osmia in 2012 to help people find simple solutions to skin issues like acne, eczema, and dermatitis. After a decade in the industry, Osmia has a stellar reputation for quality, transparency, sustainability, and authenticity in the clean beauty space. Their products help people find healthier, happier skin with meticulously researched and tested formulas, using sustainable ingredients of exceptional quality. Learn more about Sarah and Osmia here.

  1. How starting small can lead to big wins

  2. How physicians should be at the center of discussion and decisions leading to safe healthcare

    Guest Info:

Serena H. Chen MD graduated from Brown University and earned her MD at Duke University School of Medicine. She trained in Gynecology, Obstetrics, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and now serves as Director for the Division of Reproductive Medicine at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, and the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science, as well as Clinical Associate Professor at Rutgers NJ Medical School and Rutgers RWJ Medical School. She has been voted a Top Doctor for many years in reproductive medicine by publications including US News and World Report, Inside Jersey Magazine, NJ Monthly, and NY Magazine. She serves on the ASRM Technology Committee and is on the editorial staff of the ASRM journal, Fertility and Sterility, as an Interactive Associate. She is a founding member of the ASRM Social Media SIG and works to promote physician use of social media for awareness, patient education, and advocacy.

Dr. Chen strongly supports her patients’ right to be informed and involved in their own care. She is passionate about access to treatment for infertility and fertility preservation for all. She is proud, honored, and privileged to have played a role in obtaining better access to IVF and egg freezing for the people of NJ. She won the RESOLVE Hope Award for Advocacy in 2020 for this work.

Dr Chen helped to found DoctorsforFertility.org – DFF – because access to IVF continues to be very poor in the United States, and is threatened by the current legal climate. DFF will be working to support the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) and all healthcare providers' ability to treat their patients safely and effectively. DFF will advocate, educate and lobby in order to protect access to IVF and access to reproductive healthcare so physicians in America can continue to help people that struggle with infertility build their families. In this episode of The Brave Enough Show, Dr. Sasha speaks with the founder of Solo Parent, Robert Beeson, a successful Grammy-award winning music executive who found himself as the sole parent of three young girls. They talk about common misconceptions about single parents, how to support single parents, and the growth that comes in what Robert calls the “solo season”.

You don’t want to miss this episode!

About the guest:

Robert Beeson is the founder of Solo Parent, a nonprofit that provides community, support and restoration to thousands of single parents all over the world. Prior to his work with Solo Parent, Robert had a 17-year career as a Grammy Award winning music executive, overseeing the signing and/or development of artists like Jars of Clay, Third Day, Michael W Smith, Casting Crowns and many others.

In 2006, at the height of his career, Robert’s life changed dramatically when his wife left and he found himself raising his three young daughters on his own. Crushed and broken, Robert went searching for support and help for single parents. Unfortunately he came up short and found that there just weren’t resources. He felt so alone. During his Solo season, as he calls it, Robert found that his brokenness led him to one of the greatest gifts of his life - a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God. Over time, his wounds healed, he came out of the fog, and found that his life had been transformed by God’s grace and love.

Although this wasn’t the path he would have chosen, it altered his course and reframed his understanding of every aspect of life. Realizing that more than a third of American households are run by single parents, Robert saw a huge need and wanted to share what he learned with others that had experienced similar pain.

In 2017, Robert started Solo Parent —launching the movement to help single parents and their families thrive. Today, the organization provides in-person and online groups 7 days a week with participants from around the world, a weekly podcast with more than 350,000 downloads, the Solo Parent app where thousands of single parents connect, daily meditations, e-books and other online resources, and so much more.

The results have been overwhelming - lives and families are being transformed. But there is still much to do. Even though Solo Parent has served more than 189,000 single parent families, that’s still only one-percent of single parents in America. And so, Robert’s mission continues—helping single parents find hope, healing and purpose.

In this episode of The Brave Enough Show, Sasha and Erin Lane discuss:

  • What it is to be “Someone Other Than a Mother”
  • Mothering as a verb
  • The pressure on women to become mothers

About the guest:

Erin Lane grew up being told there was no love as strong as a mother’s love. As a young Catholic girl growing up in the Midwest, she was given two options for a life well-lived: Mother or Mother Superior. She could marry a man and mother her own children, or she could marry God, so to speak, and mother the world’s children. Both were good outcomes for someone else’s life. Neither would fit the shape of hers.

“Not birthing children doesn’t mean forgoing a family. It means faith in a wider, wilier vision of family,” writes Lane. “I have practiced making meaning beyond motherhood in two life stages now: one as a person intentionally without children and one as a person suddenly raising three through foster-care. Along the way, I’ve learned that the problem with the mother scripts is not simply that they don’t work for some women. The problem is that they’re assumed to work for all women, thereby shaming any woman who lives beyond their cloud of certainty.”

Interweaving Lane’s story with those of other women—including singles and couples, stepparents and foster parents, the infertile and the ambivalent—Someone Other Than a Mother challenges the social scripts that put moms on an impossible pedestal and shame childless women and nontraditional families for not measuring up.
