My name is Frances Robertson-Ritchie and I am a Yoga teacher. I am interested in the exploration of this one precious life that we have. My passion is the constant questioning of how we can live our happiest, healthiest life. Using Yoga to manage the challenges we face in life and find joy in the present moment.
The purpose of the podcast is to share my passion for living a rich, explored life and open up the concept of Yoga as more than simply movement. I will be introducing you to experts in the field of health, wellbeing and creativity. Giving you resources to take control of your mental and physical wellbeing.
This is for you if you want to expand your horizons. Learn new ways to support your physical and mental wellbeing. You want to create healthy habits and start to prioritise your needs so that you can be joyful and resilient for yourself and those around you.
The last in this mini series of meditation sessions and the last in this season of The Explored Life: More Than Yoga.
In this episode I share another of the Meditation + Mindset sessions that we use to start our week in the Happy Healthy Membership. As before, the first section is where we journal to practice gratitude, kindness and joy. I then share how we can set intentions for our day, week, or larger life goals.
In the Happy Healthy membership we get together twice a week to practice being at home in the present moment.
Monday morning at 7am we begin our week with Meditation + Mindset.
Sunday evening at 8.30pm we get together for a Meditation for Deep Relaxation.
And you can join us! You can now book drop in sessions via my website https://www.happyhealthyyoga.co.uk/shop/
Or I have a 5 days to make meditation a habit online course available here for £24 that you can work through at your own pace.
The challenges that crop up in life are inevitable, the only thing we have control over is how we react to them. Let's practice building resilience for when those challenges arise.

If you have seen any of the documentaries by David Attenborough about the climate crisis, or seen the images of the plastic that is in the ocean and on the beaches, then you've probably have already started to think about how you can start to reduce the amount of waste that you consume. Anna started coming along to my classes around a year ago but really began to feel the benefits of Yoga as a habit when she started attending the online session.
As a director of a charity the convenience, accountability and support of the online classes have helped her to feel calmer and more grounded.
In this episode we talk about how it can sometimes take a while to realise that Yoga is for you - especially if you aren't naturally flexible.
Perhaps like Anna, as a beginner you have felt intimidated walking into a Yoga class and decided that maybe it's not for you? Listen to hear how Yoga can be more accessible and inclusive so that you can feel the benefits of the practice.
We finish by discussing the perception that Instagram can give us about what Yoga is, and how sometimes that can take us away from what Yoga is really all about in the first place.

Alexandria Crow joins me in in a frank and open discussion about how Yoga can be approached in a way that is more ethical and sustainable.
The discussion raises the following:
-How can we free ourselves from the constraints of the modern traditional pose technique.
-How we can move away from how we teach the Yoga to what we are teaching.
-How this translates into a Yoga class setting in a way that is accessible and inclusive to everyone.
-How we can address the difficult issues of pain, injury and power dynamics in the context of a Yoga class.
Alex shares her journey to developing this approach, involving her own experience of hypermobility and injury as a Yoga practitioner and teacher.
Alex has a three day, online workshop coming up on 6th Dec, in partnership with TriYoga London focusing on Hypermobility in the context of a Yoga class.

Spoiler alert - unfortunately there is no specific Yoga pose which will fix persistent pain. However there are many ways that we can support our recovery. Our bodies are amazingly strong and resilient.
Today I am talking to Yoga teacher Hannah Stewart about the complex subject of pain. You may have listened to the episode I recorded with Hannah way back in August about her modern , functional approach to Yoga and movement.
So many people arrive at a Yoga class because they are suffering from persistent pain of some kind. It is important to understand the nature of pain, (as much as we can) in order to ensure that our Yoga practice is supporting our recovery. Sally Lisle was the guide on the Snowdon trip I went on recently. She skillfully led us off the beaten track and to the summit and dealt with my fear of heights with ease. She has obviously had lots of experience of facing fear as a climber and mountaineer.
Sally found her love of the outdoors at 9 years old when a few days feeling fully immersed in the wilderness convinced her that she could do absolutely anything. She has spent the last 22 years working toward making as many other people feel like this as possible! She is a fully qualified rock climbing and mountaineering instructor (MCI) and member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors. She has a first class degree in Sports Science (with Outdoor Activities) from Bangor University and believes in applying science-based theory in her company Far Out Pursuits' courses to make them as effective and beneficial as possible.
In this episode I find out exactly what is going on when we face our fears and how we can overcome our natural response to stressful situations.
And this is relevant to us all - you don’t need to be a mountain climber to be familiar with those feelings of fear. Sometimes simply speaking up or putting yourself out there can induce the same responses. Learning about fear and how to manage it is something that is useful for all of us.
You can read the article she wrote about this here -

This new normal is not normal is it? It doesn't matter what we tell ourselves, everything is shifting and changing around us and that can create a sense of worry, of stress and anxiety.
I recorded this session back at the very start of lockdown but it still feels very relevant right now. We need tools to help us to navigate through these challenging times. To build resilience and help us to come back to the present moment, the here and now, rather than trying to constantly predict what is going to happen in the future.
I want to share with you these 4 really simple tools that have helped me to manage stress in my life, perhaps you might find them useful too.

Breathing Techniques

Do you want to know how to get more energy?
Listen to this episode to find out just how powerful the practice of relaxation is. I share 2 quick and simple techniques to help you drop into a calmer, more relaxed state in under 10 mins.
Because these tools are so simple they are often overlooked:
The reason we don't use these simple tools regularly is because we just haven't made relaxation a priority yet.
We haven't realised that one we begin to prioritise relaxation, and in turn our health and wellbeing then all the other areas of our life take on a new shine.
Make your health and wellbeing a priority. Make relaxation a habit. Find out how in this episode.

In this episode of the podcast I have invited my 10 year old twin daughters to tell me about their favourite tools for staying calm and relaxed.
We know ourselves how useful it is to be able to manage the stress response.
I believe that one of the most useful skills we can share with our children is how they can down-regulate their nervous system.
But you cant force this stuff on children, as I have well found out when trying to get my kids to do yoga. Children learn from watching what we do so we need to lead through example.
If we want our children to be calm and happy and relaxed then we need to show them how. That means doing the things that we know contribute to positively to our wellbeing.
We talk about the girls’ favourite calming techniques for children: breathing techniques, visualisation for sleep and how these tools have helped them through challenging situations.
What has really made me happy is that Betty now takes it upon herself to check in with me to make sure that I have taken some time for relaxation during the day – she sees me so often on the computer, or on my phone, or running around and she knows the importance of relaxation both for herself and for others. She has actually become quite strict about it, and it makes me very happy.
Listen and share with anyone else who you think might benefit from these really practical tools.

You might remember me talking to the lovely Jo back on episode 9 about the work that she does with sound therapy. Jo and I have collaborated on events in the past where she has played the harp and the crystal healing bowls to guide us into a deep relaxation and sound meditation.
Today Jo is talking to us about the work that she does as a somatic therapist, helping her clients to move beyond unresolved trauma. We talk about how trauma isn't necessarily one huge event, such as a car crash, but can accumulate over time. Jo talks about how small daily traumas, like tiny little cuts can build up over time to create a feeling of overwhelm. Her work in drawing awareness into the body and into a very present state helps her clients to release barriers that are holding them back.
Listen to the end for a practical technique that anyone can use in their daily life to manage the stress response to traumatic events, big or small.

This weeks podcast episode is particularly relevant for me right now since my son has just turned 13. To be honest, he has been acting like a teenager for a while now. I was only just recently reminiscing that I couldn't remember the last time that he had held my hand - that became unacceptable long ago.
I have heard the saying that you are only as happy as your least happy child before and it really rings true for me. As parents our happiness is so closely tied into the happiness of our children. The teenage years bring their own unique challenges for both the child and the parent. Especially in our current circumstances. Anxiety and stress, social isolation, exam pressure all on top of a period of growth and maturing where the brain is basically re-wiring itself for adulthood. So I was keen to ask Viv how we can best support our teenagers.
Here are some key take-aways from our chat:
If you have a teenager who is suffering with anxiety or stress, you can head over to Viv's website to get in touch.

Pennie Varvarides is a strength and nutrition coach helping womxn find their strength inside and outside of the gym. She works to build a solid foundation in training through intentional practice in training and nutrition that spills over into an intentional life. Pennie helps clients build strong habits from the ground up. Find her on instagram @superpennie.
I have become more and more aware over the last year or so about how important strength is for our health, especially for us women, especially as we get older. When I first started my Yoga teacher training I was still under the impression that flexibility was the end goal of the practice. It's taken me a lot of sifting through different information sources to realise that keeping our bodies healthy is so much more complicated that that. You may have already listened to episode 1 where I talk to Hannah about her updated and modern Yoga teacher training Yoga Reloaded. She and I discussed some of the misconceptions when it came to flexibility and how important strength is for the body.
As women, traditionally we don't think that we necessarily need to be strong. It can be daunting and hard to know where to start. As Pennie says, the body begins to deteriorate after the age of 30. We need to maintain our muscles by loading them, by adding in weight and resistance. I love how Pennie breaks down these ideas in a really simple way.

Moving from a place of Fear to Empowerment.
How Claudine Masson helps women through the birth of their baby and beyond using relaxation, visualisation and the power of the breath.

Did you know that 50% of people dream of starting their own business, are you one of them?
Have you always dreamed of following your passion and starting your own business? As a mum, sometimes it makes more sense to create a business that you can work around the family - rather than your family having to fit around your work.
"It makes you re-assess what your priorities are and whether you are getting enjoyment out of what you are doing when you are away from your children. It makes you re-think what is important in life."
For me, it comes down to this idea of finding balance in your life. Balance between work, family, self care, fun, rest. Making time for the things you want to do while still being able to support your family.
But maybe you aren't a natural planner (that's me). Or you are passionate about the nature of your business but feel bogged down with all of the tasks that are required of you. Its liberating to know that you don't need to be good at everything - Kate's role is to support you in all the areas that aren't so natural for you. The areas outside of your zone of expertise. She is a planning queen, and knows the ins and outs of what your business needs.
She leads a team of VAs within her business Paperclips Included, to support Mums who run their own businesses. More recently, Kate has been supporting Mums to launch and set up their businesses, with all of the foundations in place that they will need to build a successful and sustainable business. Kate loves to help busy Mums to streamline processes and systems within both their business and family lives, ensuring that there is time for all of the essential roles that a Business owning Mum has to complete.
In this episode, Kate shares her top tips for following your passion and creating a business that works for you and your family.
The importance of making a plan
How self-care is essential
Ways to manage your precious time effectively
Do you have a dream of starting your own business, or maybe you have already taken the leap, Id love to hear from you.

Taking Kerry's creative writing course, Write Like A Grrrl was a big step for me. I hadn't written ANYTHING since school and had lived with the internal notion that I was not a "creative" person. I have this hunch that not having a creative outlet can have a negative impact on our mental health. Or to put it another way, exploring creativity supports our overall wellbeing.
The biggest block and misconception that myself, and most people have is that in order to do something creative, you should be good at it. Kerry's 6-week writing course turned that idea around for me. There is value in being creative simply for the joy of it. For the pleasure in the process.
