As followers of Jesus, we have accepted the role of servants. The ministry of serving others is what Jesus calls us to do all throughout the whole Bible. In John 21, Jesus challenges Peter to serve others as a result of truly loving him. In this sermon, comedian and ChildFund partner Tony Wolf challenges us to do the same and shares what this looks like in our world today.
Next Steps: • Ask yourself what am I doing for the “least of these?” • Consider sponsoring a child through ChildFund.

October 23, 2022 Revelation 21
We know the book of Revelation can cause feelings of fear and intimidation because it is typically associated with things like the "rapture" or the "end of the world." However, in reality, the book uses bold, highly symbolic language to point people to the spiritual truths behind the social and political situations of their time. The book of Revelation was designed to help the original audience understand the day-to-day realities they were facing, but it still has something to say to us today!
Next Steps: • Identify ways you are creating or allowing division, pain, distance from God and evil to thrive. Commit to removing them. • Pray the Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6:9-13 every day this week.

October 16, 2022 John 15:1-5
If you were to take a poll and ask a simple question, “Who is Jesus?” you would probably get a multitude of answers. In fact, if you asked a thousand people their opinions about Jesus, you would probably get a thousand responses. In the end, what really matters is not what other people say about Jesus, but what Jesus says about Himself. This is why we are so excited to start our series called “I Am: Jesus in His Own Words.” In this series, we’ll look at seven statements in the Gospel of John where Jesus says, “I am.” We will listen in on several different conversations in which Jesus makes very specific, far-reaching, and even outrageous “I am” statements about himself.
Next Steps: • Identify some ways that help you stay connected to God. • Engage in an after-dinner conversation about transactional love versus unconditional love. • Love someone without any strings attached.

Next Steps: • What has God provided? • Be thankful and content. • What can you put at Jesus’s feet this week and then wait for Him to provide?

Why is it so hard to love at times? Why has our culture gotten to a point where we lash out instead of love when we disagree about anything? What if we lived a counter-cultural life? What if we lived a life where love was illuminated? In this series, we will be going through the book of First John and learning what it really means to live as the light of God’s love. We will talk about the tension between light and darkness, belief and denial, obedience and rebellion, and ultimately, love and fear. As we go through this four-part series, we will be reminded that while it is important to recognize the lines between truth and error, this must always be done in a spirit of love.
Next Steps: • Consider areas of your life where you are typically obedient, and take some time to reflect on what is motivating you to be obedient: love or obligation? • Identify an area of your life where you are struggling to be obedient; pray that God will stir your heart in such a way that you are moved to obey as a response to your love for Him.

Our days are full of conversation. On any given day, we have dozens of interactions and conversations. In fact, one study out of Britain revealed that the average person has 27 conversations every day, lasting an average of 10 minutes each. Some of these conversations are with strangers and close friends, in coffee shops or at work, over a meal or on the phone. Some conversations are quick and light, others are long and deep. Conversations matter, and they hold the potential to change a whole day, or, in some cases, a life. In this series, called Conversations with Jesus, we will be exploring several conversations that Jesus had with people in the book of John. Each of these conversations was intentional, crucial, and life-changing. These conversations that Jesus had centuries ago can still impact us today.
Next Steps: • Identify a doubt or unanswered question you have about God. Talk openly with God about your concerns. Open up to a trusted spiritual mentor about your doubt or question. • Commit to being a good listener instead of a critic when someone expresses doubts or questions about God.

Leaders take the lead. Like a drum major leading a marching band or the grand marshal at a parade, leaders are out in front showing others the way. We will learn many leadership lessons from them, such as how God gives us the courage to lead, helps us learn from mistakes, and gives us leaders we can follow.

Lamentations is a memorial. It’s the largest lament in the Bible. It’s a book that demonstrates the power of turning to God, laying out our complaints and trusting God, of reaching out to be met by God in a time of loss.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word canceled? Maybe you think about it in relation to stopping or disconnecting a subscription or a service. This term is also used to describe people we no longer want to associate with. If someone does or says something we don’t like or agree with, we simply cancel them from our lives. We disassociate from them. We let go. In many ways, we say that the person no longer offers value to us and our lives. We live in cancel culture.
In this series called "Canceled," we will talk about what it means as Christians to live in a cancel culture and explore whether cancel culture is Biblical. We will wrestle with loving people who are difficult to love in our lives. I Samuel 24:1-7, Matthew 5:38-45
Next Steps: Identify someone in your life you have hostility or anger toward. Pray for them by name each day this week. Avoid the tendency to pray for them to have a change of heart. Instead, pray that God will bless them. Look for opportunities to go above and beyond in how kind you are this week.

If someone or something is thriving, that means it is doing well. To thrive is to grow vigorously. Plants can thrive, businesses can thrive, people can thrive; and when they are thriving, great things are happening.
Now thrive may be the last word you are thinking about as we begin 2021. Many people are just thinking about surviving, trying to get by, living one day at time. But what if God called us to more? What if He wants you to thrive spiritually, thrive in the chaos, thrive at work and in school, thrive by giving up control?
What if we made it a goal in 2021 to thrive? I believe great things will happen in our lives, in our city, and in our faith community when we thrive.
This week we talk about how we can thrive at school.
Next Steps: • Identify an area of your life where you need to increase your wisdom. Ask God to help you become more wise in this aspect of your life. Look for someone to mentor you in this area and commit to not just gain information, but to pursue wisdom. • Find a creative way to thank someone who has modeled wisdom for you or been a mentor for you. • Be intentional about having meaningful conversations with your friends and family this week.

He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her. She had just completed the purification rites after having her menstrual period. Then she returned home. Later, when Bathsheba discovered that she was pregnant, she sent David a message, saying, “I’m pregnant.”

You never thought it could happen to you, then one day you wake up and you have become that person you never thought you would be. That person who is cynical, disconnected, prideful, burned out, and even that person who makes compromises. This week we are starting a series called Didn’t See it Coming based on a book by Carey Nieuwhof. We will wrestle with the above challenges together and see how God’s word provides encouragement and tools to help us overcome them. When Jesus sat down to eat and celebrate the Passover with his followers, he knew he was eating with people who would let him down and even betray him.
Next Steps
Consider which of these four Apostles do you relate to the most?
Who do you need to invite to your table?

We often think of the feeding of the 5,000 as a story about Jesus miraculously providing food, which it is. But we also need to understand Jesus provided because his followers did not. Jesus was not inconvenienced by needy people, he welcomed them. Jesus also asks his followers to care about people in need and provide for them.
Next Steps: • Take an inventory of your resources and find a creative way to help someone in need this week. • Donate or volunteer this week at the church’s food pantry, West Avenue Compassion or the San Antonio Food Bank. • Prepare a meal for someone in need.

Jesus was often invited to parties and social events. At one of these events, an uninvited guest showed up, a women with a bad reputation. This women proceeded to wash Jesus's feet with her tears and anoint them with oil. Jesus accepted her beautiful act of worship.

Almost every major event or celebration is occasioned by a big meal. This isn’t true of only our culture. People have been feasting for generations all over the world. A shared meal has great power to bind people together in shared memory and celebration.
This week we kicked off this series by looking at how Jesus treated a woman with a bad reputation who showed up uninvited at a dinner party. Jesus welcomed her, just as she was and pushed back against the religious people who judged her. Like Jesus, our tables should be open to everyone.
Every relationship is difficult and for love to endure through every circumstance, we have to practice forgiveness.
Hope is more than an idea or a dream. Hope motivates us to live differently and love relentlessly. As we love our friends and family, we must bring hope to others.
Faith is more than a set of believes. Faith is being moved to action. As followers of Jesus our love should move us to action. As Bob Goff says, "Love is never stationary."
Love requires sacrifice. We are looking at three examples as we consider what it looks like to love sacrificially: mothers, Ruth and Jesus.
Sometimes love comes very easily. But what about loving when it isn’t easy? The fact is that showing love all the time requires selflessness and intentionality.
This week we are starting a new series called Messy: Loving Others Isn’t Easy. Over the next five weeks, we will be taking a close look at 1 Corinthians 13 to discover what love really is and what it looks like to relate to others in love, even when feelings tell you otherwise.
God tends to call us to do difficult things, beyond our abilities, which stretch us. Simply follow God is itself a disruption.
Not all disruptions are bad. As we celebrate Jesus's victory over death, we experience a great disruption that brought new life and renewal.
When life is disrupted, we are flooded with emotions. Often we make the mistake of ignoring our emotions or pretending they do not exist. Jesus showed us it is important to embrace our emotions.
All of us are going through a storm of some type. It is important to remember that Jesus is with us in the midst of the storms of life.
Jesus went against his culture and baffled his closest followers by welcoming children. We want to be a church that loves and serves children.
The Old Testament contained 613 laws, some positive, others negative. Most of these were designed to keep us safe and help us live justly. Jesus was continually frustrated with our tendency to traditions into laws.
Jesus was gracious, kind and loving. Jesus was also blunt, sometimes sarcastic and passionate. One of the things that made Jesus mad was when insiders prevented others from accessing God's grace. This week we kicked off a series based on the book "What Made Jesus Mad" by Tim Harlow. Jesus challenges us to consider ways we've closed the door on people and commit ourselves to making a way for people to come to God.
As we close out our dangerous prayers series, we consider King David's sins and ask what it looks like to seek forgiveness.
We have partnered with Mustard Seed and Andy Rodriguez for 12 years. As part of our series on dangerous prayers, Andy challenged us to respond to God's sending.
Prayer is life-changing. One dangerous thing we can ask of God is to experience brokenness. God asks us to live with humility and brokenness.
Dangerous prayers are bold prayers that challenge us, make us uncomfortable, and transform us. Over the next four weeks, we are going to be challenging you to pray dangerous prayers, to engage in prayer in ways you may have never done before. Asking God to search you and reveal who you really are is a dangerous endeavor.
After we encounter Jesus in the Gospels, we are left asking, "What's next?" Many of us misunderstand and misuse the Bible as we try to live out the principles it contains.
The New Testament opens with four biographies of Jesus which challenged the social, political and religious powers of his day and still offer good news to us now.
With 39 books and filled with ancient historical events alongside wisdom, poetry, prophetic messages, the Old Testament can seem daunting. Woven through it all is the revelation of God’s character and nature through His interaction with humanity. It addition to all of that, the Old Testament ultimately point to Jesus.
The Bible has been described as many things: holy, best-seller, religious text, instruction manual, myth, love letter, scripture and a religious library to name a few. It is made up of 66 books across several genres, divided into two major sections and originally written in three languages. The Bible's significance as a historical and religious text can’t be overstated, but it is so much more than a book. To kick off this series, we start by exploring what the Bible actually is.
All throughout the Bible, God's people are describes as sheep. This image carries a lot of significance. As God's sheep, we must be lead by Jesus, the Great Shepherd.
Hebrews 11 reminds us of those who have gone before us, leaving a legacy of faith. We all need encouragement to hold fast and continue in faith.
As we wrap up 2019 and look forward to a new year, we are asking you to consider what it looks like to engage with God and the work God is already doing. We believe God is calling us to engage on our campus, in our city and around the world.
Jesus completely changed the way relate to God, changing the terms of the agreement between us and God. As a result, we have something worth holding onto.
As we continue studying through the book of Hebrews we see that Jesus completely changed the way we interact with God. Before we were kept at a distance, dependent on a system of priests to offer sacrifices over and over. Jesus is able to go directly to the Father on our behalf.
It seems absurd to have hope, especially in the face of difficulties and disappointments, but when we truly experience Jesus, not only can we have hope, but a hope that won't disappoint us.
Most High Priest were cut off and separated from the people. Jesus is a completely sympathetic High Priest, because Jesus completely understands our weakness. We finished this sermon by taking the Lord's Supper, breaking bread to remind us of Jesus body broken for us.

This week we had the privilege of worshiping together with Crossroads Church and being challenged about the importance of Christian Unity.
Guest speaker Brian Jennings, author of "Dancing in No Man's Land," wrapped up our series talking about the importance of finding unity, balancing doctrine and relationships, and being an example to the world.
Some people excel at speaking with grace. Others are great at telling the truth. It is rare to find someone who has the willingness and ability to offer both immense grace and dependable truth. Living in No Man's Land requires us to speak and live out grace and truth.
It happens over and over again--at the first sign of conflict, we flee to a bunker with people who think like us and attack everyone else. We think these bunkers of like-minded people will provide us safety and security, but they actually lead to death. God is calling people to step out of their bunkers and engage with truth and grace.
We all have a life story. It is where God's story and our story collide that things get interesting. God is able to bring light into our stories of shame.

God created us to be givers as we were created in God's image. We are at our best and fullest when we are giving.
It is paramount that you not only create spiritual habits for yourself, but that you also create spiritual habits for and with your family.
Daniel made it a priority to be a prayer warrior. He was focused on who he wanted to be rather than what he wanted to do. Who do you want to be?
Woody was called out by Andy and Bonnie and he knew to whom he belonged. We should know the same.
We kicked off our summer At the Movies series with the latest installment of the Warner Brothers MonsterVerse series, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There is usually a fight behind the one we can see. A spiritual struggle that we tend to ignore and avoid. God is calling us to stop fighting against flesh and blood, and instead to trust Jesus's victory and stand firm against the spiritual monsters we face.
Through the story of the redemption of Nineveh, we can clearly see the importance of caring for, praying for and serving our city.
Rather than asking God to bless the plans we create, we need to prayerfully allow God's will to become the very thing that drives what our plans are.
Mike Tyson's Punch out is tough. It's a major feat to beat Mike Tyson at the end of the game! It reminds us a lot about David and Goliath.
Monopoly is a game of greed. Oftentimes, we have areas in our lives where greed takes over. We need to find our contentment in Christ.
Rather than speaking words to kill, we need to be consciously making an effort to speak words that give life.

Facing the uncertainty of the future and the possibility of failure can be overwhelming. We tend to fall into thinking traps and make excused rather than move forward.
We all experience fear in some way, shape or form. This week, we look at how to deal with our fears of the world.
We all fail and feel shame. The cross tells us, though, that we can find forgiveness in the Christ.
You will fail and the rooster will crow, but you are not defined by your failures. You are a child of God.
We all make mistakes. How we respond to those mistakes is tremendously important in our walks with Christ and our lives in general.
Come and see the glory of God. Invite others to come and see the glory of God. Once it is seen, it is undeniable.
Throughout the Bible there is a lot of diversity of those welcome in the Kingdom. No one is ever left out or forgotten.
Matthew was a tax collector - someone who cheated others out of money! Thomas was a pessimist and had a hard time seeing positives in life. Still, Jesus was able to use them as two of his Apostles.
James was a passionate man and passionate follower of Jesus. We can learn from his fire.
Sometimes all it takes for someone to hear the Gospel is a simple invitation. Who are you inviting to be a part of the Kingdom?
What have you carried that has prevented you from being "all in" in your walk with God? Burn that plow.
What do you need to put in your bucket? Patience? Kindness? Selflessness? Humility? Fill up your life with whatever will help you grow closer to God. Preached on January 13, 2019 by Ronnie Morgan.
In our walk with God, we are often met with distractions. Let us not allow anything... SQUIRREL!!! ... to distract us from our relationship with Yahweh. Preached on January 6, 2019 by Ronnie Morgan.
Have you learned how to see? Generations of God's people could not see the Messiah, but one man named Simeon could see. He recognized the glory of the Lord.
The nuances of the story - how many wisemen were there, where they met Jesus, how old Jesus was when they arrived - do not matter. What matters is that the wisemen came.
Despite being complete social outcasts, the shepherds were the first ones (at least, the first in Luke's account) to hear about the birth of the Savior. Jesus came as an outcast, too, and he came to welcome outcasts into the Kingdom.
Despite being hand-picked by God to give birth to the long-awaited Messiah and one of the most celebrated people of all-time, Mary was able to sit down and be humble. Can you?
After not believing he and his wife could have a son, not speaking for nine months, and communicating that his son would be named "John," Zechariah slowed down and took time to praise the one who blessed him with a son.
No matter what struggles we have in life or obstacles we must overcome, we know that Christ has overcome death and has already won our most important battle for us.
When we cautiously approach films, we can find both negative and positive lessons to be learned. In Moana, we can see the relentlessness of Paul.
Fred Rogers, more famously known as simply "Mr. Rogers," lived as though everyone was his neighbor. Jesus seemed to preach the same message.
Being single should never be a burden. Don't ever settle for someone who doesn't help you grow in your most important relationship - your relationship with God. Marriages don't often spontaneously blow up. Usually, it's the little things that build up. Beware of the "foxes."
When entering into a marriage, we often overlook everything that partnership involves. Communication and resolution conflict are key.
We all go through seasons in many aspects of our lives - careers, kids, grandkids, relationships, and even marriages. Despite how difficult things may get in your marriage, though, never stop pursuing your spouse.
Kicking off a series on marriage, we look at whether or not our first priority should be our spouse. In short, our first priority should always be God.
