Two friends and colleagues, two different countries: Canada and the United States… sharing our observations on life and how to live it to its fullest with purpose and integrity, along with tips and practices on Leading with Love. As certified coaches who work with people leading at home, at work and in their communities across the continent, they have discovered that love wins.
We see acknowledgement as the art of slowing down to see and honour a person or situation and speak it into the space. There is so much value in taking the time to acknowledge another – it has a profound effect on both giver and receiver, and it can be an absolute game-changer in any relationship. In this episode, we explore:
· the meaning of acknowledgement
· how to acknowledge another person
· acknowledgement at home and work
· the vulnerability and courage of acknowledgement
· its impact on individuals, teams and communities
Slowing down to notice and appreciate another person or group of people takes conscious effort, and it is SO worth it! We’d love to hear how you have been practicing acknowledgement in your world. Please reach out or learn more about our work at changemakernation.com.
We welcome Changemaker and leader, Father Scott VanDerveer to the podcast for a wonderful and wide-ranging conversation on intention, freedom, accountability and purpose.
Fr. Scott spent 20 years discerning his path in response to a call from God. Over the years, he pursued a number of jobs - corporate regional manager, grant writer, school bus driver, to name a few. He followed them with a seven-year career in teaching before finally answering the call and becoming ordained in 2013 at age 38. Fr. Scott is thrilled and grateful to now be a parish priest, following his deep interest in accompanying others who are in the midst of discerning God's intentions for their lives.

Leading with Grit and Resilience
We welcome Melissa DeMotte, entrepreneur and owner of the beloved independent bookstore, The Well-Read Moose. We chat with Melissa about how she has managed the challenges of continuing her business through the pandemic, and discuss:
· leading from your values through a crisis
· supporting a team through challenge and change
· building relationships that create helpful support systems
· managing varying expectations and taking a stand for what matters
· keeping an eye on the big picture and finding gratitude in the midst of hardship
As Melissa says, “I wanted to take care of my people who had poured so much of themselves into our store. I wanted it to be a safe environment for them and I was ready and willing to do whatever it took to do that.”
Melissa had a career in finance prior to opening the bookstore. While it is comforting to her that “debits always equal credits,” she finds owning a bookstore so much more fun and rewarding! Melissa loves to read all different genres of books. Getting immersed in story is her passion. When she is not working at the store or reading, Melissa loves to hike, garden, cook, and kayak and watch hockey or football games.
Please support Melissa’s business and learn more about The Well-Read Moose at www.wellreadmoose.com.

Things seem very frenetic right now. There is so much going on. Yet, we see the possibility, in this time, to redesign our world so it truly works for everyone. We want to slow down and have conversations that allow us to become aware of what’s real so we can choose something different for ourselves and uncover what we really want – as teams, as families, as individuals. In this episode we look at:
-the opportunity
-the resistance
-working in the darkness
-being a light for yourself and others
As always, we welcome your feedback. Please let us know what you are feeling, what you are working with, and what you envision for a new way of being.
We’re following-up on our last conversation on leading with love at home because there is so much more to say! Of course, there will always be more, but in this episode we explore how we are showing up as parents, especially during this time, so we can raise and empower the children in our lives and enjoy happy, healthy relationships. When we refer to parents, we are talking about anyone who is raising a child in their life. A few tools we explore include:
-the Pause
-being unattached
-apologizing
-responsibility for impact
We’d love to hear your own tools and practices when it comes to modelling and leading with love at home. Leave a comment below or reach us at changemakernation.com. Hope you enjoy the conversation!
This week we are talking about breaking through our own limitations in order to be in our leadership and create more positive impact in the world. By seeing through old stories and patterns, we can have access to our essential self more often. We touch on:
-limiting vs empowering beliefs
-the importance of emotions in leadership
-getting conscious of our true beliefs
-recovering to and trusting our inner leader
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is such an inspiration and a model of grace and strength in leadership. We honour her here in a poem by Maya Angelou, with thanks to Perri Mathews for sharing.
When Great Trees Fall by Maya Angelou
When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.
We are faced with many challenges these days, at work and in our daily lives. We wonder how we might we approach them in a new way by exploring how we show up in moments of uncertainty or frustration, including accessing creativity, curiosity, our inner wisdom and other resources.

Leading with love at Home
In this episode, Lorin and Sherie discuss what it means to lead with love at home. Everyone, no matter what age or context, has the ability to choose to lead. What is important is being intentional about your leadership- how you show up and what actions you will take - and being aware and responsible for your impact on others. We include a couple of simple but meaningful exercises:
choose your intention and corresponding action for how you will lead at home for a set period of time
choose the way you will come together as a family. What does love (in our home) look like, feel like and sound like?
Listen in for more details.
As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas! Please leave a comment or rate and review the podcast. Thank you for listening!
Sherie Hodds and Lorin Beller discuss how setting boundaries can set you free, how judgment can both serve us and create obstacles, and do a deep dive into how we can make decisions without regret. In this episode, they provide a variety of important criteria to consider in making effective decisions, such as values, facts, body wisdom, alignment and trust - just to name a few. A few resources we mention: Judgment Detox by Gabrielle Bernstein “Empathy is connecting with the emotion that someone is experiencing, not the event or the circumstance.” Brene Brown
Sherie Hodds and Lorin Beller discuss capacity and why it is critical in navigating our way through the COVID19 global pandemic, stepping up in our anti-racism movement, and reversing the chaos that comes from a lack of leadership.
