In this mini episode, Anne Marie revisits Black Tudors, by Miranda Kaufmann. Anne Marie purchased the book whilst visiting Mary Rose Museum back in 2017 to research the African presence in Tudor England. One of the central figures, perhaps the most well known black Tudor, John Blanke appears in the historical record as well as Tudor art.

Anna admittedly plans her life around the river’s tides. Before she commits to doctor’s appointments, lunch dates, fill in the blank, she first consults the tide charts. Low tide wins out every time. It was such a pleasure to talk to Anna about her experiences as a mudlark along the Thames foreshore, and I think you will see why, not only is she well-versed on London’s history, she is absolutely delightful!

Not too long ago, Anne Marie had the opportunity to talk to Emily Strasser. Emily has written a book about a little-known community built in secret by the United States government in rural western Knoxville, Tennessee. Oak Ridge was one of three secret cities constructed by the Manhattan Project.
Emily Strasser is a writer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She received her MFA in nonfiction from the University of Minnesota. Her work has appeared in Catapult, Ploughshares, Guernica, Colorado Review, The Bitter Southerner, The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, Gulf Coast, and Tricycle, among others, and she was the presenter of the BBC podcast “The Bomb.” Her essays have been named notable in Best American Essays 2016 and 2017 and nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She was a winner of the 2015 Ploughshares Emerging Writer’s Contest, a 2016 AWP Intro Award, a 2016 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist’s Initiative Grant, and the 2016 W.K. Rose Fellowship from Vassar College. She served as a 2018-19 Olive B. O’Connor Fellow in Creative Writing at Colgate University and a 2019 McKnight Writing Fellow. Her first book, Half-Life of a Secret, a memoir on the intersection of family and national secrets in the nuclear city of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is forthcoming in April 2023. Pre-order here.

In this fourth episode of our October History and Haunting Series, Anne Marie talks to Denver Ghost Hunters' (DGH) team members Stephanie and Elise about their favorite histories and how their ghost-hunting endeavors connect to them.
They share digital recordings of disembodied voices (or EVPs) of spirits from beyond and line up the history with the haunting.
With the nineteenth-century United States Western expansion, many a restless soul came to the then Kansas Territory (Colorado) with only their dream and a prayer in hopes of finding a better life. Many of DGH's local haunts are steeped in the spiritual residue of people who came to the mountains to create a new life, some with success and some without.
Ghost hunter and psychic Stephanie shares the evolution of her supernatural skills and how she and her team utilize the tools at their disposal, including her psychic abilities, ghost-hunting equipment, and the intuition of the team to match up a haunted site's history with paranormal evidence whenever possible.

In addition, she’s spent over a decade as a consulting copywriter for beauty brands such as Shiseido, bliss, Laura Mercier, Avon, L’Oréal, and Madame CJ Walker, specializing in brand voice and identity. As her stage persona, The Lady Aye, she has worked as a professional sideshow performer (sword swallower, fire eater, blockhead, and pain-proof girl) and MC with acts ranging from Rob Zombie to Cirque du Soleil, and has appeared on TV’s Gossip Girl, Oddities, The President Show, Mysteries at the Museum and Dickinson. In this episode, Anne Marie Talks to Andrew Nagorski about his new book Saving Freud: The Rescuers Who Brought Him to Freedom. The book recounts the dramatic true story of Sigmund Freud’s last-minute escape to London following the German annexation of Austria, why he waited until after the Nazi take over, and the colorful cast of characters who persuaded and extricated him from his beloved Vienna to London.
Andrew Nagorski is an award-winning journalist and author who spent more than three decades as a foreign correspondent and editor for Newsweek. From 2008 to April 2014, he was vice president and director of public policy for the EastWest Institute, an international affairs think tank. Nagorski is now based in St. Augustine, Florida but continues to travel extensively, writing for numerous publications. His recent books -- Hitlerland: American Eyewitnesses to the Nazi Rise to Power (Simon & Schuster, 2012), The Nazi Hunters (Simon & Schuster, 2016), and 1941: The Year Germany Lost the War -- have all received rave reviews. In a starred review, Kirkus calls his new book, Saving Freud: The Rescuers Who Brought Him to Freedom (Simon & Schuster, August 2022), "a riveting page-turner...a fine biography." Publishers Weekly calls it "an invigorating look at a lesser-known chapter of Freud's well-documented life."

In this episode, Anne Marie talks to professor of history and author Robert McElvaine about his latest book, The Times They Were a-Changin': 1964, the Year the Sixties Arrived and the Battle Lines of Today Were Drawn.1964 is when the sixties truly arrived, from JFK’s assassination in November 1963 It was then that the United States began a radical shift toward a much more inclusive definition of “American,” with a greater degree of equality and a government actively involved in social and economic improvement.It was a radical shift accompanied by a cultural revolution. The same month Bob Dylan released his iconic ballad “The Times They Are a-Changin’,” in January 1964, President Lyndon Johnson announced his War on Poverty.
McCelvaine uncovers 1964’s moment of reckoning, when American identity began to be reimagined, tying those past battles to their legacy today. Throughout, he captures the changing consciousness of the period through its vibrant music, film, literature, and personalities.
McCelvaine is the Elizabeth Chisholm Distinguished Professor of Arts & Letters and Professor of History at Millsaps College. He is the author of seven books, including The Great Depression: America, 1929–1941 and Eve’s Seed: Biology, the Sexes, and the Course of History, and is the editor of three. Among his many honors are the Richard Wright Award for Literary Excellence and the B. L. C. Wailes Award for national distinction in the field of history. He has served as a historical consultant for several television programs, including the PBS series The Great Depression, and has written more than one hundred articles and opinion pieces in such national publications as the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, the Nation, and Newsweek and has been a guest on about the same number of television and radio programs. He lives in Clinton, Mississippi.

In this episode, the third in our Mudlark Series, Anne Marie interviews Jason Sandy, co-author of Thames Mudlarking: Searching for London's Lost Treasures. Jason shares his River Thames journey and talks about the river's history and the fellowship he has found within the mudlark community.
Jason Sandy is an American architect and property developer in London. He is a member of the exclusive Society of Thames Mudlarks. Jason’s mudlarking adventures have been featured on national television in Britain, Germany, and Canada. He has written extensively about mudlarking for magazines in Britain and USA. His mudlarking collection has been exhibited in the British Museum, Tate Modern, and other cultural institutions. Jason also lectures about mudlarking in schools, universities, and organizations. In this episode, the second in our Mudlark series, Anne Marie talks to Mudlark Lynn Pew. Lynn mudlarks along the River Irwell in Lancashire, England, where she scours its banks for beautiful pieces of broken pottery, little pieces of history tumbled by the river for over 100 years. Lynn tells us about the river's history and where many of the pieces she finds originated.
Lynn is fascinated with how these tiny fragments made their way into the river and the journey they have been on. Cracked and faded, their edges are worn smooth from their watery passage, a mere remnant of what once was. Who last held them in their former, utilitarian life before she plucked them from the banks of the river.
Years after she began collecting these lovely miniature pieces of history, she incorporated them into handcrafted one-of-a-kind mosaic works of art, which she entered and won a place in Country Living Magazine's 'Kitchen Table Talent' competition.

In this special episode of Armchair Historians, Anne Marie is joined by her great-nephew and co-host Finley. We talk to YouTube sensation Simon Bourne of Si Finds about one of our favorite hobbies, treasure hunting and specifically mudlarking. Since the beginning, the River Thames which flows from the Cotswolds, through the heart of London, and into the North Sea has been a place where people from all over the world and throughout time have crossed, sailed, and walked along. It is a tidal river that rises and recedes with the tide of the North Sea. It's at low tide when mudlarks come out and peruse the Thame's foreshore for treasure, pieces of history.
Its history stretches back to over 30 million years ago when the river was once a tributary of the River Rhine because Britain was not an island. Mudlarks have been known to find Roman coins, 400-year-old clay pipes, Tudor pottery, and the list goes on.
Simon is a Society of Thames foreshore permit holder which means he is an advanced mudlarker known for his historically relevant foreshore finds. This designation also gives him access to otherwise restricted areas of the River Thames. Simon takes us on his adventures along the foreshore and other historic places through his YouTube channel, Si-Finds, teaching us about history through his finds.

Author Richard Cohen talks to Anne Marie about his new book, Making History: The Storytellers Who Shaped the Past. Cohen says “Every author of a work of history is an interpreter, a filter, with his or her own personal input.”
He has thoroughly investigated and compared the published works and private utterances of our greatest chroniclers to discover the rivalries, the religious beliefs, the lost loves, and the cultural pressures that informed their (and, subsequently, our) views of the world.
Richard Cohen is the author of By the Sword, Chasing the Sun, and How to Write Like Tolstoy. He is the former publishing director of two leading London publishing houses, he has edited books that have won the Pulitzer, Booker, and Whitbread/Costa prizes, while twenty-one have been #1 bestsellers. He has written for most UK quality newspapers as well as for The New York Times Book Review and The Wall Street Journal, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

In this episode, Anne Marie interviews Airforce Veteran and Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle member Nick Brooks. Nick talks about the new documentary Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts and the almost erased history of the first African American Soldiers who earned the nickname "buffalo soldiers" most likely from the Cheyenne people. The name stuck and followed the segregated black military until desegregation in 1947.
About the documentary: In 1866, six all-black cavalry and infantry regiments were created after Congress passed the Army Organization Act. They came to be known as Buffalo Soldiers.
Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts explores the often-contradictory role played by the Black soldiers throughout American history, emphasizing the settling of the American West and colonialism abroad.
Director Dru Holley is a Northwest-based filmmaker, and the documentary features interviews with Quintard Taylor (Ph.D. Historian at UW), Ryan Booth (Ph.D. Candidate, WSU), and members of the Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle, among many others.

In this episode, Anne Marie talks to Gregory Smithers about his new book, Reclaiming Two-Spirits: Sexuality, Spiritual Renewal & Sovereignty in Native America. Two Spirits is a sweeping history of Indigenous traditions of gender, sexuality, and resistance that reveals how, despite centuries of colonialism, Two-Spirit people are reclaiming their place in Native nations.
Gregory Smithers is a professor of American history and Eminent Scholar (2019-2024) in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Davis, and has taught in California, Hawaii, Scotland, and Ohio. Smithers is currently a British Academy Global Professor, based in the Treatied Spaces research cluster at the University of Hull.
His research and writing focus on the histories of Indigenous people and African Americans from the eighteenth century to the present. Smithers is particularly interested in the rich history of the Cherokee people, Indigenous history from the Mountain South to California and the Southwest Pacific, and environmental history. His work is devoted to narrating the past in ways that are publicly accessible and connect with issues of social justice, environmental sustainability, and racial and gender equity.

Wendy Rouse is a historian whose research focuses on the history of gender and sexuality in the Progressive Era. Her most recent book, Public Faces, Secret Lives: A Queer History of the Women’s Suffrage Movement (NYU Press), challenges the heteronormative framing of the traditional narrative of the campaign for the vote. Her previous two books explored the history of women and children in the Progressive Era: The Children of Chinatown: Growing up Chinese American in San Francisco, 1850 to 1920 (UNC Press) and Her Own Hero: The Origins of the Women’s Self-Defense Movement (NYU Press). Rouse is presently Associate Professor of History at San Jose State University where she teaches LGBTQ+ and women’s history.

In this episode, Anne Marie talks to Yeshiva University professor emerita Ellen Schrecker about the history leading up to today's anti-intellectualism.
Ellen has been involved with the politics of higher education and academic freedom for decades. According to Ellen, the current right-wing campaign against teaching critical race theory and other so-called “divisive concepts” is by far the most serious threat to academic freedom (as well as K-12 education) the United States has ever experienced.
Schrecker’s research and experience enable her to speak about the impact of these issues, as well as explain why today’s anti-intellectualism is more dangerous than that of the McCarthy era. She believes that if the repressive measures now coursing through state legislatures and other political bodies are to be repulsed, the academic community and engaged citizens must offer a stronger response than they have until now.

In this episode of Armchair Historians, Anne Marie talks to Dr. Tara Green. Dr. Green has recently published not on but two books, See Me Naked and Love, Activism, and the Respectable Life of Alice Dunbar-Nelson.
See Me Naked: takes a look at the lives of noted black women, including actress, singer, and activist Lena Horne, stand-up comedian Moms Mabley, teacher and Harlem Rennaisance influencer Yolande DuBois, and blues singer and performer Memphis Minnie, and how, despite their public profiles, discovered ways to enjoy pleasure.
Love, Activism, and the Respectable Life of Alice Dunbar-Nelson: about the love one Black woman had for her race, of men and women, and, finally, of herself.
Dr. Green writes that her Black Southern family immersed her in a culture of storytelling as a condition of her birth. She learned about their deliberate embrace of laughter and love as they navigated the everyday challenges of being Black in America. Their gift of cultural practices is her inspiration as a professor, writer, and mentor.
Dr. Green also says, her family inspired her to study the lives of Black folks through literature. She began her formal studies at Dillard University.
Today she is an African American Studies professor with over 20 years of teaching literature and culture. She is the author and editor of 6 books on the lives and experiences of African Americans in twentieth-century literature and film. Dr. Green is a recognized academic leader who is dedicated to building diverse, respectful, inclusive communities in higher education.

In this episode, Anne Marie interviews memoirist and award-winning poet Jason Sommer. Jason is the author of five poetry collections: most recently, Portulans in the University of Chicago’s Phoenix Poets Series. His two other Phoenix books are Other People’s Troubles, which won the Society of Midland Authors Award and was a finalist for the PEN/USA West Award, and The Man Who Sleeps in My Office, a finalist for Kansas City Star’s William Rockhill Nelson Award.The Laughter of Adam and Eve was published by Southern Illinois University as the winner of the Crab Orchard Review Competition. Poems from his first collection, Lifting the Stone, from Forest Books, London, have been broadcast on the BBC World Service.
Today, however, Jason talks to Anne Marie about his beautifully written new memoir, Shmuel’s Bridge which will be released March 1 of this year, it is currently available for pre-order. Against the backdrop of the Holocaust, Shmuel’s Bridge sees history through a double lens: the memories of a growing son’s complex relationship with his father, and the meditations of that son who, now grown, finds himself caring for a man losing all connection to a past that must not be forgotten.

In this episode of Armchair Historians, Anne Marie talks to Jeannie Barbour. Jeannie is the Content Producer of the recently released film, Montford: The Chickasaw Rancher starring Martin Sensmeier, Tommy Flanagan, Dermot Mulroney, and Grace Montie. The movie brings to life the true rags to riches story of Montford T. Johnson who built a cattle ranching empire on the Western plains of Indian Territory. It “tells of his time among settlers, cowboys, tribes, military, and bandits. Armed with grit and determination, Montford had the courage that was needed to tame what seemed an infinite wilderness, while always maintaining respect for those who lived there.”
Jeannie Barbour received a degree in fine arts from Oklahoma State University. Upon graduation, she entered the field of advertising and served as an illustrator and writer for various Oklahoma City public relations firms. In 1987, she decided to pursue a career in tribal government by taking a position at the Chickasaw Nation. During that time, she has served on the Oklahoma Film Commission, the National Trail of Tears advisory board and graduated from the prestigious Leadership Oklahoma program. Jeannie is a graduate of the University of Denver’s Publishing Institute and has completed graduate course work in museum studies and Native American history. She has written for a variety of books and periodicals focused on southeastern tribal history and culture. Her award-winning artwork hangs in public spaces and private collections throughout the United States. Jeannie currently serves as the Creative Director for the Chickasaw Nation’s Department of Communications.

In this episode of Armchair Historians, Anne Marie talks to Kevin Kuharic about his recently published book, A Clutter of Patchwork Squares: A Chronicle of Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery.
For those of you who have been following us from the beginning, you may remember that my first episode was a three-part series in which Mr. Kuharic shared the history of famous hotelier and French chef of the Rockies, Louis Dupuy.
A Clutter of Patchwork Squares, which is rising quickly up the Amazon chart for 20th Century American History, is a groundbreaking historical account and reference. Kuharic has literally spent years researching and writing about one of the most popular and largest cemeteries in Atlanta Georgia, we are talking footnotes and everything.
Mr. Kuharic serves as executive director of Hotel de Paris Museum, a Site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and member of Great American Treasures. He has appeared in documentaries, on public television series, and contributed to the books James Novelli: A Forgotten Sculptor, Building Metropolitan Atlanta: Past, Present & Future, Urban Green: Innovative Parks for Resurgent Cities, Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery: An Illustrated History and Guide, and Cultural Heritage Tourism: Five Steps for Success and Sustainability. His historic preservation work at Oakland cemetery spanned three decades and was recognized by four mayors of the City of Atlanta.

Paper Bullets was named a 2020 Stonewall Honor Book in Nonfiction and Best Book of 2020 by Booklist, as well as longlisted for the Carnegie Medal For Excellence in Nonfiction.

In this episode, Anne Marie talks to DC By Foot tour guide Melissa Gilbert. Melissa specializes in the Ghosts of Georgetown and shares some of the DC neighborhood's scary tales with us today.
Originally from Bullhead City, Arizona, the unceded lands of the Pipa Aha Macav, Melissa Leigh Gilbert has spent her career working in Theater Arts and Education but a lifetime of pursuing the arts as they relate to the human experience. Her work as designer, artisan, and educator has spanned numerous genres, disciplines, and locations.
With Theatre as her primary medium, Costume Design had been the dominant focus of her career. The arc of her work and her design philosophies reflect her Liberal Arts education at Randolph-Macon Woman's College where she received her BFA. While completing her MFA at the University of Iowa she was able to expand her repertoire to include Scenic Art and Design. Both institutions allowed her the opportunity to work abroad in England. In undergrad Melissa studied at the University of Reading as part of the 'World in Britain' program. While in graduate school she returned for a research project which included a tailoring course at the Arts University Bournemouth and worked with Mahogany on costumes for Notting Hill Carnival.
With a personal and pedagogical emphasis on process and analysis Melissa casts a wide net in regards to her research and influences but relishes the opportunity to edit with collaborators. Melissa maintains a firm belief that one's first idea is never one's best and can always be improved through collaboration, critique, and experimentation. As an educator she encourages experiential learning and is an avid proponent of the Liz Lerman Critical Response Technique, not only in her curriculum but throughout her own creative process.
Melissa is currently the Wardrobe Supervisor and Costume Associate at the Olney Theatre Center, on the unceded lands of the Piscataway Conoy. She is the Co-Chair of the Social Committee.
She enjoys baking bread, making pickles, hiking, water aerobics, and spending time with her Cat, Blake The Shake-Gilbert. Melissa also moonlights as a DC Tour Guide. She specializes in Ghosts, Murder, and the historically underrepresented.

Steeped in lore and legend, this isolated valley is situated in Nahani National Park Reserve along the Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

In this episode, Anne Marie talks to history geek, storyteller, and tour operator, Chris Albrecht about Golden Colorado's history, The town that almost became the capital of Colorado.
Chris says, "there’s no better way to get to know a city than having a local teach you about it through stories. You can also get great recommendations for things to do, when to do them, and the places to avoid." So when he moved to Golden, Colorado, and realized there wasn't a guided history tour available in the historic wild west town at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, he decided to start his own tour company, Golden History Tours.

In this episode, Anne Marie talks to Caroline Welling VanDeusen. Caroline is the author of Diary of Elizabeth Dixon, 1845-47 published in White House History, Issue 33, by the White House Historical Association. You may wonder who Elizabeth Dixon is because Elizabeth actually worked hard to erase herself from history. She went so far as to pay off reporters not to write about her. Caroline talks in-depth about her 3rd great-grandmother Elizabeth Dixon, whose presence was requested by first lady Mary Todd Lincoln during the dark hours following her husband’s fatal shooting. Elizabeth is depicted in the painting The Last Hours of Abraham Lincoln, by Alonzo Chappel seated next to Mary who is sprawled across the dead body of President Lincoln.

In this episode Anne Marie talks to La Percée du Bocage museum president, Billy Leblond and Men in the Shed Blogger, Colin Foster about Operation Bluecoat and the story behind Men in the Shed.
Men in the Shed tells the story of 18 Allied POWs who literally left their mark on the wall of a wooden shed owned by a French baker in Normandy. The shed (commandeered by the German military) became a temporary jail for Allied POW's during the fighting following the D Day landings in 1944.
"Operation Bluecoat was a British offensive in the Battle of Normandy, from 30 July until 7 August 1944, during the Second World War. The geographical objectives of the attack, undertaken by the VIII Corps and XXX Corps of the British Second Army (Lieutenant-General Miles Dempsey), were to secure the road junction of Vire and the high ground of Mont Pinçon.
"The attack was made at short notice to exploit the success of Operation Cobra by the First US Army after it broke out on the western flank of the Normandy beachhead and to exploit the withdrawal of the 2nd Panzer Division from the Caumont area, to take part in Unternehmen Lüttich (Operation Liège) a German counter-offensive against the Americans." — Wikipedia
Colin Foster has been interested in the Second World War from an early age. According to Colin, " being born in 1959 meant that he grew up in an age where good quality war movies were regularly made!"
He is a regular visitor to Normandy since 2002 when he started researching the Normandy campaign as the result of his friend stubmling upon the names, ranks, serial numbers and dates of capture of 18 Allied soldiers, written on one of the inside walls of his shed. The old wooden shed, which once served as a grainstore, sits behind what used to be the village bakery in the small Normandy village of St Vigor des Mézerets. purchased the bakery (by now converted to a house) in 2000. His research to date is recorded on his website Men in the Shed.
Billy Leblond has a passion for the History of his paternal grandfather and father with whom he has visited many historical places.
His interset for WWII came in college and developed in Lycée.
His internships focused on WW2 museums of Normandy and included Dead Man Corner, Caen Memorial and Grand Bunker Ouistreham.
For the past 5 years Billy has been involved in the La Percée du Bocage Museum, of which he now serves as president of the museum's board, following Mark Kentell last year. Jean Ménard, the founder of the museum, helped and guided him throughout the years he has been involved. According to Billy Jean Ménard has been instrumental in helping him to understand "the perception of the human aspect of the battles and of the history of veteran to whom we owe so much."

James McKissic shares the legacy of his great great-great-grandfather, Wilson Woods, who was born into slavery in Meigs County, Tennessee during the 1820's. Wilson's mother was a slave named Mary, his father was also his owner. When Mr. Mckissic's mother shared his ancestor's 1862 bill of sale (between his two white half brothers), with James, he shared it with the National Museum of African American History which began a whole sequence of activities including a Washington Post article and being featured on the Historically Black podcast. Wilson's legacy includes the family farm which is still in the family today.

Dr. Teri Finneman is a journalism professor at the University of Kansas and a former political reporter. A couple weeks ago Anne Marie talked to married couple Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell. authors of the newly published book Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love 1850s-1950s. Hugh and Neal have been happily married for 30 years. The love between them is palpable, even after all those years.
They called it the accidental collection and what began as a lucky coincidence became a rescue mission. Charged with protecting antiquity, Hugh and Neal, doggedly went about acquiring and preserving this visual narrative of men in love. Approximately 3,000 photos in, with the encouragement of others, they decided to share their collection with the world.
Bringing to light the hidden history that was always there but unseen, and according to Hugh a “powerful depiction of love between two people.”

Today we talk to Eric Walter about the mysterious disappearance of Keith Reinhard in Silver Plume, Colorado.
Eric Walter is an award-winning director, editor, and documentary filmmaker in Los Angeles, known for producing investigative nonfiction films that explore bizarre cold cases, unexplained phenomena, and the dark side of human psychology.
His directorial debut, My Amityville Horror, was named one of the top 10 festival genre films of 2012. The film was distributed theatrically by IFC Films and is currently available on streaming services.
As a lead editor for feature films, docuseries, and commercial advertising campaigns, Eric’s work has spanned across a variety of platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime, FX, AMC, Disney+ and many others.
He also frequently serves as an expert on the Amityville Horror case, having recently been profiled by networks such as ABC, A&E, and Travel Channel.
Eric’s second documentary feature, Dark Side of the Mountain, is slated for release in 2021.

He has played sellout dates at London's historic Wilton's Music Hall, Hoxton Hall and he brings his act along with his affectionately named piano, Ol' Joanna, weekly to Mr. Fogg's Tavern where he leads the patron's in a good old fashioned "knees up". In part 2 of our Homesteading series we talk to Colorado licensed dentist and rancher, Les Maes. As a follow up to our interview with Frank Young, who took us back to the American frontier and the 1862 Homestead Act. If you haven't done so already, I suggest you listen to the series in order so as to get the bigger historical context of part 2. Les shares his personal account of growing up on the family ranch, the history of which is rooted in the early days of the Homestead Act.
The ancestral roots of the Maes family are fixed in New Mexico history. An area originally Inhabited by members of the Clovis culture of Paleo-Indians. Later inhabitants included American Indians of the Mogollon and Ancestral Pueblo peoples cultures. Then, under Spanish colonization, the area became known as Nuevo México (1598–1848), then New Mexico Territory (1850–1912) and finally it was admitted to the Union January 6, 1912.
Les's direct ancestor Juan Anastacio Maes (1863-1937) staked a claim in the second half of the nineteenth century in what is now, Bueyeros, New Mexico. The 3,000 acre Maes Ranch is still owned and run by the descendants of Juan.

The Schleswig-Holstein Question was the name given to the whole complex of diplomatic and other issues arising in the 19th century out of the relations of the two duchies, Schleswig and Holstein, to the Danish crown on one side and the German Confederation on the other.
Kristyn is a writer and casual literary critic with a passion for the intersection of Germanic language, cultural history, and literature. She graduated magna cum laude from University of Redlands with departmental honors for her critical essay on Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian epic literature. Since then, she founded a blog focused on linguistics, literature and cultural history, which updates on Tuesdays.

The story begins with Leon's great grandfather, Charles Augustine Christian des Moineaux, born in France in the early nineteenth century. Charles makes his away to New Orleans, eventually he turns up with his family in Auroria (now Denver) becoming one of the first early settlers in the Colorado Territory.
