California solar installers experienced a disastrous 2023 as soon as the NEM 3 rate changes took effect. The California Solar and Storage Association reports about an 80 percent drop in rooftop solar projects since April 2023. To make matters worse, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) closed out 2023 by approving further changes that impact the payback on battery exports. The CPUC also ended the self-consumption of solar for most virtual net metering projects. Is there any way to Power Forward! in California? SANTA FE, N.M. — May 30, 2023 — BayWa r.e. announced today the inclusion of Tesla Powerwall through BayWa r.e. Solar Systems, the company’s distribution arm in the United States. This collaboration is the first of its kind in the country – bringing together Tesla’s residential solar battery system with BayWa r.e., a trusted ally for a network of leading solar installers as they expand their roles into residential energy consultants.

BayWa r.e. will add Tesla Powerwall in California and is already working to expand availability to other U.S. states in the coming months. As a rechargeable battery storage system, Tesla Powerwall eliminates the need for consistent utility grid consumption by storing excess energy produced by a solar system and using it during periods of low production, such as at night or during power outages.

“The addition of Tesla Powerwall marks an exciting milestone in our commitment to advancing the future of energy,” said David Dunlap, VP of Product Strategy at BayWa r.e. Solar Systems, LLC. “By adding Powerwall to our best-in-class storage technology suite, our solar install partners can unlock self-generation for American homeowners all while reducing their electric bill and carbon footprint. We are excited to be chosen to collaborate in this effort.”

“By adding Powerwall to our best-in-class storage technology suite, our solar install partners can unlock self-generation for American homeowners all while reducing their electric bill and carbon footprint.”

– David Dunlap, VP of Product Strategy, BayWa r.e. Solar Systems, LLC

Following the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and NEM 3.0 in California, residents are actively seeking efficient ways to reduce their rising power bills and protect themselves from frequent utility grid outages through sustainable energy solutions. With a 13.5 kilowatt-hour (kWh) energy capacity and a max load of 10 Powerwall’s per system, homeowners can store up to 135 kWh of energy right on their property and become their own clean energy power plant.

Solar Tech Talk is back with another episode! In this installment, we’re talking storage again as we meet the fine folks at FranklinWH (Franklin Whole Home) — the newest manufacturing partner to join our BayWa r.e. line card!

Our co-hosts, Jason Burnett from our technical sales team, and longtime product manager, Aaron Bingham, remind us why home storage is an essential part of today’s residential solar package — especially since batteries nowadays are actually able to do what the average homeowner expects them to do. That is, provide safe, reliable, on-demand power when there is an outage, be it a weather emergency or a simple grid interruption, plus smart energy management in everyday situations. Other market forces are also driving the future for battery storage: the approaching critical mass of electric vehicle adoption and new net metering policies that really nudge homeowners to own their power.

Watch the episode on YouTube or listen to it on Spotify: Highlights From This Episode: Not Too Good to Be True: Meet FranklinWH: (6:45) Franklin Whole Home storage products are now on our BayWa r.e. warehouse shelves, and here to explain the company’s origins and the Franklin whole-home advantage is Justin Hopkins, National Sales Director for FranklinWH. Justin says “reduced compromise” was one of their design philosophies, thinking of ways for homeowners to put the grid in their back pocket, and truly own their power. The differentiator for FranklinWH is the power tech and electronics side, to create something both analog and smart to create a balanced storage-plus-energy management ecosystem.

Justin Hopkins

National Sales Director

It Takes (Only) Two: aGate and aPower: (10:10) Justin tells Aaron and Jason about the simplicity behind FranklinWH’s two products: the aGate energy manager and the aPower storage unit. “The aGate really is a smart controller,” according to Justin. “Whether it’s solar or generator, or in the future when we see more bi-directional car charging options.” Some highlights of the aGate and aPower pairing:

  • Especially great for people who already have electric cars or looking to have EVs.
  • aPower combines LFP (lithium iron phosphate) high-capacity battery with proprietary inverter inside (no need for a separate inverter).
  • Designed with installers in mind — especially installers who have been frustrated with past storage installs. Units come prefabricated with typically external accessories (CT, ATS, etc.) already built inside.
  • Batteries readily available across the U.S., since LFP tech manufacturing is already robust and favorable for long-term price stability. “It’s the same prismatic cells you see in the new Tesla Model 3’s… the Chevys and the Ford Lightnings.”
  • Extremely resilient: “It’s used to being discharged 10%, 20%, five times a day.”
  • Stackability: Attach up to 15 aPower batteries to a single aGate. “Also, you can stack the batteries up to 160 Amps, or 38.4 continuous output per aGate. It’s essentially small commercial, but 240 volt.” (Jump to 15:23 mark)
  • The power electronics in the aGate are sophisticated enough to detect bad voltage from the grid and act upon it. “It’s actually a safety mechanism for your home.” Simplicity for Installers, Robustness for Homeowners: (18:33) Jason asks Justin the key question: why is FranklinWH worth a look for solar installers?

“Across the board, what we’ve really tried to do is to create a paint-by-numbers solution for installers. Whether it’s having accessories that will allow the system to operate off-grid with PV-load side support, even though they have too much solar,” Justin says. “For the budget-minded customer, I really believe we’ve stacked everything up very incrementally, from the most basic of systems, to really advanced, complex systems… we’ve made it really easy to design this to meet customer’s needs.”

Other perks:

  • Options for oversized arrays
  • The AP Box: An “external relay CT combiner” to ease any hurdles when designing over existing solar plus storage systems.
  • Main panel upgrade avoidance: “We have the additional bus rating of 280 Amps. The aGate allows for up to 160 Amps of generation input. So PV, batteries — that can be controlled and selectively routed upstream via our PCS controls. So whole-home backup of 200 panel that’s already maxed out with 40 Amp PV breaker, can now be routed to the load side of the aGate. And additional load-side generation sources — PV, battery — can be added behind the utility meter without actually upgrading the service panel, by using these features.” (Jump to 21:30 mark)
  • Overcoming black starting: Like the fuel gauge on your car, aPower is designed to still hold a small power reserve even when it appears to be drained, so as to help start the battery system after heavy use during an outage. (Jump to 24:08 mark)
  • Three smart circuits in the aGate allow customer control over appliances via smartphone app, helping homeowners manage their energy better. Continuous Improvement: (28:43) For anyone on the fence, Justin lists some of the details that installers have been keen to mention. For example, the waterproof (maybe even hurricane-proof?), error-proof aPower battery is quite heavy at 400 pounds — but while taking extra effort to move, it comes prefabricated so there is less onsite work, and you don’t have to build it onsite. (As the gang laughs: “It’s only heavy once!”) Justin also notes the installer certification program offered by FranklinWH is easy to sign up for, with a 9-module training roughly over 3-hours of time.

What else is on the roadmap for FranklinWH? “The industry is changing a lot for storage. Demand response is becoming part of the conversation more and more every day. Virtual power plants. Different programs from utilities where you can sell back the power or provide, essentially, infrastructure support to the grid during high-demand periods. There’s a lot of value in that,” Justin says. ”But, at Franklin we do not compete in the BPP space against our installers.”

Justin goes on to say that FranklinWH simply is providing the hardware. “I see installers — especially the high-volume installers — becoming aggregators over the next couple of years, and managing these assets.” Justin has this forecast: “The BPP has potential for these homeowners to maybe get some of these rebates in year one. But in year nine a new program comes out where, by discharging their battery to the grid, they get another benefit. We’re not competing for that capital against our [installer] partners. Rather, we’re supporting with hardware, and saying, ‘Go do this, this is your empire to build, not ours.”

“Go do this, this is your empire to build, not ours” There’s so much more to this podcast than the recap above. Watch or listen to the full episode to hear the full conversation.

STT Bonus: Did you miss Justin’s “dare” to industry partners for maxing out the aPower attachments? Go back to the 16:00 mark of our show to catch the laugh. Plus, jump to the 31:45 mark for FranklinWH’s promotion for certified installers, a buy-two-get-one aPower offer, now available through June.

**Next Steps in EV Charging: (6:20)**

Thanks to their acquisition of ClipperCreek last year, Enphase is now a leader in the EV charging market. Enphase recently announced they are developing a bi-directional EV charger that would allow vehicle to home and green charging to enable a homeowner’s car to charge from the green electrons they generate from their solar systems. Stay tuned for updates from Enphase on this in the near future.

Aaron, Jason, and Ashley also speak to:

  • Vehicle to home and vehicle to grid functionality
  • Increasing ROI for electric car owners
  • VPP and grid service programs that financially incentivize homeowners

Tune into the episode at 6:20 to hear their conversation.

Innovations & Improvements: (9:41)

Enphase’s team has been busy. Over the past year, they have implemented A LOT of system-wide improvements to the IQ8. Here are a few that Ashley cataloged for us:

  • Reduced commissioning times by about 70%
  • Software improvements and preinstalled software to support install efficiency
  • Grid transitions improved by 4x
  • IQ Load Controller installation support program

  • Ability to reverse polarity of a consumption CT without being on site – all through the Enphase Installer Portal click image to expand

IEEE 1547-2018: How Enphase helps solar installers get ahead of the standard (15:18) The national grid interconnection standard, IEEE 1547-2018 was published in several years ago, but adoption is just starting in many states. Most Enphase products are compliant with the standard, but here is what you need to know:

  • The standard is not retroactive – it can only be applied to new installations
  • New Enphase data sheets show whether products have passed UL 1741 SB 3rd Edition, the testing that shows compliance with IEEE 1547-2018 Attention California Installers:

IEEE 1547-2018 will be adopted in California on April 1. NEM 3.0 goes into effect on April 15. When submitting your interconnection applications between these two days, make sure to use compliant SKUs to grandfather your projects into NEM 2.0.

Listen to the episode at 15:18 for more info.

Ashley also walks through the Enphase communication product SKUs that comply with this standard. Listen in to the podcast at 16:39 to get more details.

Our conversation with Ashely is rounded out with a great case study from a homeowner that used his Enphase system to power through an 8-day grid outage in a snowstorm. Tune into the podcast to hear Bruce’s story and get deeper insights on the items mentioned above.

A brief recap is below but watch or listen to the full episode for more details.

IEEE 1547-2018: (30:12)

The IEEE Standard for Interconnection and Interoperability of DERs is an important one for solar installers. As each state and AHJ (authority having jurisdiction) adopts this new standard at different times, solar component manufacturers are prioritizing their distribution of compliant products to support the timelines of these adoptions in each region. Make sure the products you choose have the correct compliance standards for your region!

**Inflation Reduction Act: (32:27)**

Several points in the IRA are key for solar installers to follow:

  • Resetting the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) to 30% for the next 10 years went into effect immediately
  • A 30% standalone storage credit was also put into effect on Jan. 1, 2023 for all systems installed after that date. This is Important!

Check out the podcast at 35:35 for a thorough explanation of the two parts of domestic content in the IRA and how it could affect your project finance.

Other Domestic Content benefits are for low income, community, or tribal land installs and are included in the section 48d commercial section of the policy, but do not apply to homeowners –We are still waiting on further guidance from the US Department of Treasury to fully understand how those will be applied, but it will make a difference for your financial modeling in your projects.

NEM3.0 – California Net Metering Changes: (42:31)

A big change to solar net metering in California goes into effect on April 14, 2023. This is a big deal for many installers in the state as the economics of a residential solar systems changes rather dramatically.

The difference? Designing a homeowner’s system to overproduced so they get retail rates on excess energy will no longer be advantageous. The balance of production and consumption will now be even more important so sizing a system to the needs of the home and the customer’s rate structure will have to be more strategic.

There are some advantages, though, if a system is optimized to export power at high rate periods and avoid exporting at low rate periods. That’s where storage comes in and a key focus on understanding your Time of Use cases for export structuring.

Tune in to the podcast at 44:53 to hear David’s explanation of this process.

One year ago, we shared our plans for a DEI focus shift at BayWa r.e. Solar Distribution. Here’s how it’s going and what we have learned in the process.

Moral courage, at its core, is the ability to do what’s right in the face of our fears. Often, that means standing up for values, ethics, and beliefs that are meaningful to us – without shaming others for having views that we’re afraid to consider. This can be especially hard in the work of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), where personal identities take center-stage and emotions run high. As a result of those emotions, developing the skills of moral courage is an intentional journey. Indeed, according to the New Hampshire Business Review, it may be helpful to think of courage as “not the absence of fear, but the ability to manage [a process] despite having fear.”

Why did we choose to focus on moral courage? In 2020, we conducted an internal company survey that revealed some of our employees felt they didn’t have a voice in our organization. We found that we suffered from “viewpoint homogeneity”, a term that refers to an environment where the majority of employees are perceived to share the same political and ideological perspectives and, therefore, silences others with opposing beliefs. But, at BayWa r.e., our company culture seeks the opposite. We want employees to show up as their authentic selves, every day. The survey results prompted us to look at DEI in our organization through a different lens. To do this, we needed external support to help us benefit all members of our company. So, we hired Moral Courage College.

See the results of our survey and learn more about “viewpoint homogeneity” here:

Culture Chronicle: Is Our Organization Viewpoint Inclusive?

Moral Courage College offers a unique approach to organizational DEI training. Founded by New York Times bestselling author and Oxford University scholar Irshad Manji, the organization’s trainings and services equip people with tools to embrace tension and “engage constructively about contentious issues”. As Prof. Manji states, “This program doesn’t tell anybody what to think or believe…It teaches everybody to lower their emotional defenses so that contentious issues can be turned into constructive conversations and healthy teamwork.”

This approach to DEI aligns with the BayWa r.e. belief that employees should be able to bring their “whole selves” to work. It provided us with the tools to develop trust and empathy while establishing a common ground – all important to build a diverse culture of thought in our company.

So, in April of 2022, we invited employees across our Canadian and US solar distribution entities to join us in a live communication workshop facilitated by Prof. Manji and behavioral scientist Allison Gerrard from [delete “the”] Moral Courage College. During the half day program, employees were introduced to the moral courage philosophy. Team members were asked to explore a range of topics related to fostering viewpoint diversity through constructive disagreements and we were all confronted with the complexity and difficulty of engaging in this new, learned space.

After the workshop, we asked our employees if they wanted to continue the Moral Courage collaboration – they eagerly wanted to learn more. That’s where the BayWa r.e. pilot program came in.

“This program doesn’t tell anybody what to think or believe…It teaches everybody to lower their emotional defenses so that contentious issues can be turned into constructive conversations and healthy teamwork.”

Prof. Irshad Manji, Founder of Moral Courage College

Our pilot project: How BayWa r.e. is promoting moral courageAs we often do at BayWa r.e., we used a pilot program to test our assumptions and learn how to optimize the addition of the moral courage framework to our organization. Specifically, the purpose of this pilot was to decide if the moral courage structure matches our employees’ needs and would provide us with the tools to embrace tension while fostering a culture of authenticity. Our goal was to disrupt the “viewpoint homogeneity” among our teams and to encourage diversity of thought.

We started the “Moral Courage Pilot” in July of 2022. Two small groups of employees came together to explore the best way to learn the new framework. The first group went through the Diversity Without Division online course offered through the Moral Courage College platform; the second group used a book club format to read Prof. Manji’s bestselling book Don’t Label Me: How to Do Diversity Without Inflaming the Culture Wars. Both groups meet biweekly to discuss the material and explore questions related to the content.

So, what have we learned so far?So far, we have gathered feedback from our participants that is both favorable and critical of the pilot and has provided great insight into the complexities of building a truly inclusive culture in any organization.

Overwhelmingly, all pilot participants expressed that they enjoyed the different perspectives shared through the moral courage lessons, and especially valued the honesty and vulnerability that team members brought to the meetings. At the same time, participants needed more guidance to apply the skills of moral courage directly to the workplace. Specifically, they wanted more support and tools to navigate tension in everyday work issues, not just when it comes to issues of politics or diversity.

We reported our feedback to Prof. Manji. A month later, she told us that she and her team are using our input to make their services, including their online course, more overtly applicable to daily situations at work. They emphasized the value of partnership, so that providers learn from clients and not just the other way around. By listening to suggestions for improvement and not becoming defensive about them, Moral Courage College lived up to its name. We, in turn, are encouraged.

Overall, the BayWa teams gained an immense amount of confidence to embrace tension, hear and honor others’ opinions, and hold constructive conversations. We all learned a lot from the moral courage pilot program. At BayWa r.e., we focus on being a learning organization, so for projects like this we highly value growth and action as the outcome of new knowledge.

Where do we go from here? We know that an authentic way to foster diversity of viewpoints is important if inclusion is going to live up to its name. So, a couple of us are now considering the ultimate step: training to become certified Moral Courage Mentors for our workplace. Becoming mentors would allow us to do two things at once: first, teach the skills of Moral Courage to coworkers year-round and, second, adapt the practice of moral courage to BayWa r.e.’s evolving needs and priorities.

Prof. Manji considers this step a win-win: the company wins by cultivating in-house talent and employees win by having some of their own employees as mentors. It is exciting to explore a combination of professional development and personal growth!

We hope this article sparks your interest in alternative DEI approaches and how to test them in order to nurture environments where everyone belongs.
