Inspired by Les Lieber’s fabled New York Jazz at Noon, Don Linke and Black Box Fund bring you Milwaukee’s version of free lunch time Jazz performances every Monday at noon. With an ever-changing line up of known and not-so-well known jazz artists, these casual and informative sessions are a welcome weekly treat. Normally, these live performances take place in Milwaukee’s Third Ward at the Skylight Music Theatre Bar and Bistro, but during the COVID-19 Safer At Home period, Black Box Fund will be posting podcasts, hosted by Don, with selections from the Jazz at Noon archive of recordings. So, kick back, fix yourself some lunch and tune in to a jazzy musical break!
Andy Blochowiak joins Don Linke on Episode 15 of the Jazz at Noon podcast to discuss how his teaching as a percussion instructor has been affected and modified throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Teaching more than 50 students per week, Blochowiak describes the measures he has taken to ensure each of his students remain safe yet able to receive meaningful instruction.
The three selections in this episode were all recorded on July 29th, 2020, right in Don Linke’s living room. You’ll hear Linke playing the upright bass in all three songs, and he is joined by Pete Billmann on guitar and Andy Blochowiak on drums.

This episode is a bit of a change in format and focuses on a single artist, Matthew Rotker-Lynn. A Milwaukee native and former student of Don Linke’s, Matthew is an up-and-coming guitarist who moved to New York, which Linke has proclaimed to be “the best environment on earth for jazz music.” There, he received his bachelor’s degree for jazz performance at The City College of New York.
Matthew joins the Jazz at Noon Podcast to share his experiences in the “city that never sleeps” as a guitarist prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. He explains the opportunity that this time off from live performances has given him and discusses much more as he reconnects with his former instructor.
Songs featured in this week’s episode include two selections Matthew lends his guitar skills to as well as a solo recording from the young guitar virtuoso.
Songs:
Isfahan - Duke Ellington - A solo performance from Matthew Rotker-Lynn, this jazz piece was released on Duke Ellington’s 1967 album, The Far East Suite. Its name reflects a city in Iran, which Ellington and his orchestra traveled to a few years’ prior in 1963.
I’ve Never Been In Love Before - Frank Loesser - This jazz standard was written by Loesser in 1950 and appeared in the musical, Guys and Dolls. The Jazz at Noon recording features Rotker-Lynn on guitar, with Victor Campbell on the drums and Don Linke on bass. It was originally performed live by the trio on August 14, 2019 at Catalano Square Park in Milwaukee’s Third Ward.
Voyage - Kenny Barron - A tune that can be heard on Barron’s 1986 record What If? Also performed on August 14, 2019 at Catalano Square Park, Victor Campbell plays the drums with Don Linke on bass and you guessed it, Matthew Rotker-Lynn on guitar.

In episode 13 of the Jazz at Noon Podcast, host Don Linke seeks to answer this question: what is hip in the world of jazz?”
Not yet hip to the world of jazz? Linke recommends consulting Jim Lecinski and his writing of The Ten Main Classic Jazz Styles (from ~1917 to ~1967), which provides a nice history about what this music is all about. Click HERE to view these ten main classic jazz styles.
Don shares a brief outline of the history of jazz from New Orleans to New York, and details how jazz became an art form through the rise of the bebop jazz style. You’ll hear him explain why he thinks that bebop and beyond is what is hip in the world of jazz.
The selections played in this episode feature three musicians- Kenny Kosut, Victor Campbell and Don Linke- who share a distinct bond and appreciation for this bebop style of jazz. The trio studied this style of jazz all approximately at the same time through Tony King’s jazz program at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee.
With Kosut on the piano, Campbell on the drums and Linke on the bass, these three unedited, spontaneous arrangements were originally played on February 3rd, 2020.
Songs:
Speak No Evil - Wayne Shorter - A track released in 1966 on Shorter’s Speak No Evil masterpiece album.
Well, You Needn’t - Thelonious Monk - According to Robin D.G. Kelley in his seminal biography Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original, Monk wrote the song for one of his students, a singer named Charlie Beamon. When Monk told Beamon that he would name the song after him, Beamon replied, “Well, you needn’t,” which gave the tune its name.
On Green Dolphin Street - Bronislaw Kaper - Composed by Kaper in 1947 for the film Green Dolphin Street. It later became a jazz standard when it was recorded by Miles Davis in 1958.

“Best of Jazz at Noon” - Back in March, Jazz at Noon and Black Box Fund hosted a release party to celebrate the new Best of Jazz at Noon CD. In this week’s episode, Don Linke takes us through the celebration with the sounds and stylings of those who brought the music from the CD to life. This episode features Gary Williams, Pete Billmann, Victor Campbell, Bill Stone, John Babbitt, Mike Standal and Don Linke.
Songs:
“All Blues” – Miles Davis – This tune was released in August of 1959 and appeared on the influential jazz album “Kind of Blue”. In this live version Gary Williams plays guitar, Victor Campbell on the drums, and Don Linke on bass.
“Nardis” – Miles Davis – This song was written by Miles Davis for Cannonball Adderley for the album Portrait of Cannonball. In this recording Pete Billmann takes the lead on the guitar and plays part of an arrangement of the piece created by Don Linke. Victor Campbell joins Billmann on the drums with Don Linke on bass.
“BBB (Blues by Bill)” – Bill Stone – This piece was improvised by Milwaukee artist Bill Stone. While Stone is normally known as a blues guitar musician, here he shows off his skill on the jazz guitar. While this tune was originally untitled, Don Linke gave it the name BBB during the release party. Also on this tune, John Babbitt plays bass and Victor Campbell plays drums.
“All the Things You Are” - Jerome Kern – The final song of the night was performed by Mike Standal on the guitar. This tune was composed by Jerome Kern with lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was written for the musical Very Warm for May in 1939. It also appeared in the film Broadway Rhythm in 1944.

“A Salute to Avocation” - Avocation is defined as a hobby or activity one does outside of their occupation. And in this case, Don Linke explores some of his musical favorites he personally has enjoyed revamping during his recent “coronavirus vacation.” All selections of this week’s episode are played by Linke himself.
Songs:
Love Walked In - George Gershwin - The tune was composed in 1930, with lyrics written in 1937, when it was featured in the movie musical The Goldwyn Follies. This version was recorded completely by Don Linke himself during his “coronavirus vacation,” for in today’s modern world, he’s able to record himself playing one part and then play against it with another instrument. You’ll hear him playing both the bass and the guitar on Love Walked In.
Josie - Steely Dan - Written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, this song was released in 1977 on Steely Dan’s classic album, Aja. Linke revamped this intricate arrangement to play on a solo guitar which he plays to perfection.
Hot House - Dizzy Gillespie - A composition written as a contrafact, or an alternate melody, to Cole Porter’s What Is This Thing Called Love? A bebop standard in the jazz world, Hot House has also been credited to Tadd Dameron in addition to Gillespie - you’ll hear Linke state that it remains a mystery. Don plays both the bass and the guitar in this Dizzy cover.
The Prelude and Fugue in D Major - Johann Sebastian Bach - Don Linke also honed this classical piece on his guitar during his “coronavirus vacation.” The piece can be played by various instruments, and here Linke plays it on his guitar in the Key of D, in drop D tuning.
Tracks for Pagey - Don Linke Trialogue - The final piece of the episode truly falls under the title of the episode, “A Salute to Avocation.” It’s a bonus track on one of Don Linke’s recent CD’s, Momentum. The piece is a tribute to Led Zeppelin, who inspired Linke as a young man to become a musician.

“The More, The Merrier” - Starting off with a solo, transitioning to a trio and concluding with a quintet, this episode features seven different Milwaukee-area musicians.
Songs:
Gone with the Wind - Allie Wrubel - The song was published in 1937, one year after Margaret Mitchell’s novel Gone with the Wind was released. However, the lyrics of the song have little to no correlation to the subject of the novel so it’s difficult to determine if the two are related. This version is a solo on the guitar from Don Linke. The recording is quite current as it was originally performed on Feb 24th, 2020.
I’m Old Fashioned - Jerome Kern - This song was featured in the 1942 film You Were Never Lovelier. Originally recorded on June 26th, 2019, the Jazz At Noon version of this classic features Sam Belton on drums, George Welland on bass and Don Linke on guitar.
Like Stanley T. - Don Linke Trialogue - This is an original song from the Don Linke Trialogue album, Momentum. The trialogue consists of Don Linke, Victor Campbell and Clay Schaub. However, the Jazz At Noon version, recorded on July 24th, 2019, is a quintet. The quintet includes Jesse Montijo on the alto saxophone, Ken Kosut on piano, Clay Schaub on bass, Victor Campbell on the drums and Don Linke on guitar.
