Kara joins us to share how she manages the care of her brother, Rafe, and her career.

Rafe has a serious and persistent mental illness, which has been exacerbated by his loss of vision. His daily and ongoing needs are complex and unique. Following an incident, while he was hospitalized at a reputable psychiatric hospital, in which he blinded himself, he spent many months at a second large mental hospital with insufficient psychiatric support. This hospital was unable to provide comprehensive therapeutic and transitional care required for Rafe to progress in his recovery. Kara was able to find an out-of-network, private mental health facility in Connecticut, Silver Hill Hospital, which agreed to meet Rafe, and ultimately accepted him into their program.

Kara has been a tireless caregiver for Rafe, unabashedly using all of her resources to help get him the best care available and making sure there is wrap-around care to address his very complicated needs. She also cares for more personal things, like buying him a guitar for Christmas (he loves playing!) and making sure he can get his hair and nails cut, too. There is nothing too big or too small when it comes to Kara caring for Rafe and his overall well-being.

Sharon Hall will be joined by Rebekah Wilson, MSW (agingcarecoach.com), to discuss what makes families scratch their heads and be resentful, anosognosia. When someone is diagnosed with FTD, they often say there is nothing wrong with them, you are just trying to make them sick. They insist they can drive, grocery shop, work, and be totally independent. Yet, they have accidents, bring home only cookies from the store, get fired due to someone else's fault, and leave the front door wide open when they leave the house.

We will discuss this weird word, anosognosia, and give advice on how to work around it when you have an FTDer who is "just fine" and will not give up driving, independence, or applying for jobs.We will realistically discuss what "might" work and definitely discuss what will "never" work.

Mike Eidsaune created Carely, a free mobile app designed for caregivers, in order to create a purposeful communication environment that empowers family caregivers to come together around the care of their loved one.

In planning for the business, Mike made the decision that, no matter what, the app would always be free for families to use. After five years, and multiple iterations, that decision still holds true. The Carely family app is available on any smart device and can be utilized by families for free. Families use Carely to communicate, coordinate, make decisions, and support one another. It helps families, who are often busy with work or spread apart geographically, answer the simplest questions: “Who saw mom/dad last?”; “Who’s going to see her/him next?”; and “How did those visits go?”

Sharon Hall will be joined by Rebekah Wilson, MSW, www.agingcarecoach.com for this podcast on connecting to those living with dementia.

Can you connect to the person you married or a family member in a different way after diagnosis? Should you? Many care partners had a very rocky pre-diagnosis time. Some dealt with firings over inappropriate behavior, some with affairs, some with loss of a life savings, some with arrests, gambling, drinking, and reckless behavior and even violence. Some dealt with law suits over auto accidents, sexual harrasment, shoplifting and other legal issues.

How do you heal those awful wounds of betrayal? Can you just "shut off" the negative feelings and accept these issues were driven by a dying brain? Many people struggle to "love" the person they care for after they caused devastation in their lives.

We will discuss what love means before and after diagnosis and how it might change. We will talk about how you can survive and even thrive, even after events that broke you in ways that seemed irreperable. We will talk about surviving and thriving during this diagnosis.

Through her company, Kikupal, Naomi is on a mission to change the way we give and receive help. Naomi launched her company after caring for her husband, Greg, while she managed her career and raised their two young children.

Naomi is changing the way we support caregivers in the most significant way -- by helping them delegate daily tasks. On average, caregivers spend 13 days a month on tasks such as shopping, food preparation, housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and giving medication. By delegating these tasks, a family caregiver can use time more effectivey on what matters most.

Kikupal helps family and friends gift helpful services by purchasing KikuPoints, which can be redeemed to help the family caregiver with meals, house cleaning, and more. For more information, visit https://www.kikupal.com.

When we lose our identity that is when the stress of caregiving can step in a wreak havoc on our lives. It is a hard enough journey in itself. Many people believe that addiction and substance abuse are only problems young people struggle with. That is sadly, a huge misconception. In reality, substance abuse in baby boomers and older generations is a growing public health concern and can cause havoc in families and much stress in caregivers.

My guest today is Dr. Julie Davelman who is a Clinical Psychologist with Abrams Psychological Services. Dr. Davelman and I discuss such important topics as how large a problem is this, what arethe warning signs families should be aware of, unique triggers in an older person and how can families raise this issue and begin seeking help.

You can learn more about Dr. Davelman and connect with her for further questions and advice by visiting her website at www.abramspsychservices.com and read her blog at https://drdavelman.wordpress.com/

I will also be posting some further resources on my Facebook Page - "On The Frontlines of Caregiving" - www.facebook.com/FrontlinesofCaregiving

Head on over to: Facebook Page: "On the Frontlines of Caregiving" In the comments section - post a picture of your stress-busting pet or write 1 way you have found useful to combat holiday stress Rick and I will select three lucky winners and your book will be shipped to your home.

Good luck and I sincerely hope you can carve out some time for yourselves and your holidays bring you joy and peace.

Sharon will be joined by FTD carepartner, Marcia. They are going to discuss how they found support, what works for them and where to look for support. Marcia will also share information about a Mindfulness for Dementia Caregivers course she is taking.

We all need to have support through an FTD journey. This is not a journey you can live through alone. We need to break the cycle of people "abandoing" us when we get a diagnosis and learn how to find our own support.

Two caregivers walk into a room.  They may not have met previously, but, they absolutely know each other.  They talk the same language, share the same emotions and understand deep down what it's like going through the myriad of emotions that arise during their care journey.

Ron Simons is a three-time Tony Award-winning producer, four-time Sundance Film Festival selected producer and actor of stage, film and television. Ron is also the Founder and CEO of SimonSays Entertainment.  Take a look at his bio!

I read an interview with Ron where he talked about caring for his mother for close to 30 years.  While reading his story, I felt like I knew him, despite us coming from totally different worlds.

So, I found an email for him, requested 15- 20 minutes of his time and hit "SEND." Never in a million years did I think I would hear back.  To my surprise and delight, I did hear back and Ron agreed to be a guest on my podcast to share his very personal and very touching story of being a caregiver for his mother.

His mother, diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease was a proud, independent woman who looked on the bright side of life until this awful illness took a toll on her. Being an only child and long-distance caregiver was a role that Ron took on lovingly, but also was extremely challenging.

I think the lesson for all of us in the trenches is that being a caregiver is the great equalizer.  Ron could not have been nicer or kinder to this rookie podcaster and our conversation about his journey and challenges lasted 30 minutes.

Thank you Ron for sharing your story, you make all of us feel less alone.

As a caregiver myself, I know that it is not always easy to know how to talk about dying. It can be awkward, embarrassing and can cause a lot of fear. This can lead us to miss opportunities to connect on a deeper level with those who are dying or comfort those who are grieving.

Katie Chambers is an End of Life Doula for Holisticare Hospice.  In a kind and sensitive manner, Katie helps us prepare for the loss of our loved one so that when the time comes, we can face this time knowing we did everything we could.  Katie answers common questions dealing with how to approach an older person who says "I just want to die, I'm done' and when to seek help in the grieving process.

One of the books that Katie recommends to the families she visits is Grief 365. She finds these daily meditations to be very helpful in bringing peace.  If you would like to contact Katie to ask any follow up questions, her email is: kchambers@hositicarehospice.org and here is a link to  Hositicare Hospice.

EFC: Ep 24 - 24 Family Questions About 4 Senior Living Options

As a family caregiver, one of the most important and difficult decisions you will make is how to choose the right type of living community is right for your loved one when they aren’t able to age in place at home anymore.

The choices are many and include independent living, assisted living, nursing home, memory care and a continuing care retirement community or a life plan community. Asking yourself these questions will help you determine which community is the best choice for your family’s needs. How you answer these questions is a good indicator of what type of senior living community will be a good fit. We're chatting about:

  1. Independent Living

  2. Assisted Living

  3. Memory Care

4. Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) or Life Plan Community

How do we navigate this stage in our life most of us dread and don't want to enter into? I'm talking about facing the decision to place our loved one in a nursing home.

My guest this week is Lisa Marie Chiricho who created Nursinghomeology.com.

Lisa was the caregiver for her own dad for 15 years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.  In the last 5 years of his life he lived in a nursing home. Lisa's passion now is helping other caregivers manage, monitor and organize the care their loved ones receive. Her major lesson learned - the responsibility of the family actually increases once their loved one moves into a skilled nursing facility.

We explore this and other tips to make life easier for caregivers in this segment of their journey.

Meet Heather Oglesby , one of our five Family Caregiver of the Year award winners. Heather and the other four winners will be honored during a reception on the evening of November 8 at the Third Annual National Caregiving Conference.

Heather is a 45-year old woman who is currently caring for her mother with Alzheimer's. Along with being a caregiver, she works full time for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prior to becoming a caregiver for her mother, Heather traveled the world serving in multiple voluntary roles in Africa, Romania, and Egypt.

At age 40, Heather began noticing something different with her mother. She began asking for money to pay the same bills, over and over again. Her mom would come to visit her and get lost, even though she had visited many times. Her mom appeared disheveled and confused most of the time, but at age 60, Heather just attributed her mom's behavior to getting older. Heather moved over 800 miles away from her mother to take a job in Atlanta, Georgia. As the symptoms worsened, Heather's mom could not verbalize over the phone what was happening in her life. The only words her mother could utter was that she was evicted and sleeping in her car. Heather's mom ended up in a women's shelter due to complications associated with Alzheimer's at the age of 64. Heather and her husband rushed to her mother's side and at the age of 42 became a full-time caregiver for her mother with Alzheimer's.

In this episode, we are talking about why caregiver guilt happens, the three ways guilt creeps into our lives and 7 tips to manage the guilt gremlins so you can have more peace.

  1. Asking questions

  2. Doubting your decisions

  3. Doubting your feelings

7 Tips to Manage Guilt When It Creeps Up:

  1. Acknowledge

  2. Change expectations

  3. Ask for help

  4. Self compassion

  5. Self care

  6. Embrace

  7. Recognize/accept

How do we give our carees (and ourselves) peace at end of life? Dr. Samuel Harrington, author of a new book, At Peace: Choosing a Good Death After a Long Life, joins us to guide us toward a peaceful end.

Most people say they would like to die quietly at home. But overly aggressive medical advice, coupled with an unrealistic sense of invincibility, results in the majority of elderly patients misguidedly dying in institutions while undergoing painful procedures, instead of having a better and more peaceful death they desired.

AT PEACE outlines specific active and passive steps that older patients and their health care proxies can take to insure loved ones pass their last days comfortably at home and/or in hospice, when further aggressive care is inappropriate.

Through Dr. Harrington's own experience with his parents and patients, he describes the terminal patterns of the six most common chronic diseases; how to recognize a terminal diagnosis even when the doctor is not clear about it; how to have the hard conversation about end-of-life wishes; how to minimize painful treatments and when to seek hospice care. The current estimated U.S. senior population 65 and older is well over fifty million strong. AT PEACE is a relevant and necessary resource for families across the board. Samuel Harrington, MD, a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Wisconsin Medical School, concentrated his practice at Sibley Memorial Hospital. His work as Sibley's patient safety officer representative to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Board of Trustees and his service on the board of a nonprofit hospice in Washington D.C. informed his passion for helping aged patients make appropriate end-of-life decisions.

The number of family caregivers in the U.S. varies from source to souce. Some count more than 90 million, some more than 60 million. Finding the right count can depend on how we define "family caregivers." Susan Rowe joins me to talk through this question: When counting family caregivers, who counts?

About Susan Rowe

After a career in IT and as a worship leader in the Methodist church, Susan Rowe joined Daughterhood at its inception in January 2015. As a young woman, she gained first-hand experience working as an aide in a nursing home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor and again as a care giver for her mother who suffered from dementia. Most recently, she's working toward completing her caregiver's consultant certification through caregiving.com. She brings this experience and her natural gift for empathy to bare in her current role as Daughterhood Circle Coordinator, where she works forming and supporting daughterhood circles and their group of awesome volunteer leaders from Florida to Los Angeles.

Episode 1: 5 Best Caregiver Tips For Getting Family To Help with Tandy Elisala

Do you struggle to get the family to help you take care of a loved one? One of the biggest challenges I hear from family caregivers is how to get family members to help them in some capacity or another.

Sometimes, people think we are doing such a great job and don’t complain so we must not need help. Other times, family or friends are busy living their lives and don’t stop to think about your needs. One of the biggest things we can do for ourselves is to ask for help! Don’t wait until you are overwhelmed and exhausted to ask for help. Here are my 5 Best Caregiver Tips For Getting Family To Help (so you can stress less):

Tip #1: Be prepared with a list of ways others can support you.  Listen in for a list of specific tasks others can do to get your juices flowing.

Tip #2: Choose who to ask for help and what to ask them for based on their time, preferences, abilities and strengths.

Tip #3: Be specific when asking for help. Listen in for my communication tips on how to be specific with your ask.

Tip #4: Take a “no” answer as a no for now.

Tip #5: Have a list of 3-5 emergency contacts. Listen in for details of this critical tip to help ease caregiver stress and overwhelm for both the caregiver and care recipient.

Listen in as I share a bit about who I am and why I created this podcast.

The Empowered Family Caregiver Podcast is a combination of an Interview-Based and Topic-based show. We’ll address hot topics, common issues family caregivers face and will periodically feature guest experts including current and former caregivers, aging experts, and more. We’ll release episodes weekly. Most episodes will be between 15-20 minutes long because you are busy enough with daily responsibilities. I want to ensure you get maximum value for your time.

This podcast is about supporting sandwiched caregivers in their journey, helping you know you aren’t alone, empowering you to be a voice for your loved one, helping you cultivate self-care and providing resources and tools to ease caregiver stress because daily caregiving responsibilities are tough enough… taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be. This podcast is different because I bring the unique perspective of a full-time family caregiver AND experience as a care receiver. Having been on both sides of the caregiving spectrum and raising 3 kids as a single mom, I understand the challenges you face.  Each episode delivers specific nuggets you can immediately implement.

Thank you for listening! I’m so grateful you are here. it’s a pleasure to virtually meet you. Until next time… stay empowered and calm!

Tonight, we connect with Lillian Lake, who cared for her mother, grandmother and cousin and currently cares for her husband.

In addition, Lillie Fuller and Cathy Jones will tell us about the chats on CareGiving.com.

About Lillian

Lillian is a Community Visionary. Besides defending her daily jolt of java, she staunchly advocates for several important political and social causes all rooted in an ideal of finding compassionate responses. She started her own business connecting farmers with communities and working on food policy. Through this work, she learned about human trafficking and soon chose to educate on human trafficking. In the mix she has raised a family and filled the role of caregiver to her mom when the “sandwich generation” was more of an idea, rather than the norm. A couple of months after her mom’s passing, she helped as caregiver for her husband’s grandmother. A few years later, she left her business, community, and family to take care of her cousin who was dying from cancer. Today she is caregiver to her spouse.

Some people dub her “caregiver to the world”. She claims she is an accidental caregiver. What she’s learned is the power of compassion which she emphasizes in her organizing, writing, and presenting.

Currently Lillian writes a weekly newspaper column, a weekly blog, and is writing a book expressing her caregiver roles through the power of angels, as well as including interviews of other caregivers. Lillian serves on several community boards and task forces. Over a cup of coffee or glass of wine, she often will wax into issues of human rights and food. She enjoys reading, running, Pilates and visiting museums. Check out her website at lillianlake.com.

Sometimes, we wait for the crisis to think about respite care.

What if planning for a break became part of our routine? Perhaps you can take a break only once a year for a few days -- that's okay. Planning for and organizing whatever break you can manage can happen today.

Claire E. Day, Chief Program Officer, Alzheimer's Association Northern California and Northern Nevada Chapter, helps us begin the planning and organizing process so we can take a break.

Gael Chiarella Alba joins Denise to talk about her presentations ("Keep YOU in the Circle of Care" and "A Caregivers Voice") she'll deliver at the National Caregiving Conference. You can connect with Gael at the Second Annual National Caregiving Conference, which happens November 10 and 11 at the Chicago Marriott O'Hare. Join us in Chicago or vritually.

About Gael

Author Gael Chiarella Alba E-RYT, C-IAYT, CCC is best known as a meditation teacher and yoga therapist. Gael experienced the joy of family throughout childhood in a Brooklyn walkup with her beloved grandparents living just steps away. She also witnessed enormous everyday stress in both her Grandmother and her Mother as they cared for their spouses through many years of illness, leading her to research the relationship between caring for self and caring for others through psychology, spirituality and the healing arts. In mid-life, her holistic toolbox became the container for managing the traumatic injury care of her own adult son. Her path as a therapist intersected over and over again with her own experience of how we return to balance in caregiving, and ultimately this brought her to the question of how we use our voice. As she walked this path herself, she turned her direction toward Leadership Development for Caregivers. As founder of The Yokibics Institute, she developed mindful trainings for individuals and teams through SelfCareOasis.com. With a mind, body, spirit embrace, those who care for others are given a framework for engaging this essential role with a peaceful, present, and embodied approach.

About our co-host Lisa Riggi:

Lisa was raised in a caregiving home since birth. Her maternal grandmother lived with her parents since their wedding and she witnessed them care for several family members either in their home or at a facility. They became her carees in 2006 when they moved in with Lisa and her family.

Lisa experienced a “Is this all there is in life?” moment after her dad passed away in 2014. Struggling to keep her focus on her home-based business, she Googled caregiving support and found Caregiving.com and Denise Brown. She immediately connected with Denise and completed the Certified Caregiving Consultant and Certified Caregiving Educator training classes. She has opened her caregiving consultant business, The Serene Harbor, which offers caregivers and their families a place of peace and safety as they navigate their caregiving journey. She also presents Denise Brown's book, The Caregiving Years: Six Stages to a Meaningful Journey.

Lisa's mission is to help as many family caregivers know that there is support and help available. She only wishes she found Denise and Caregiving.com sooner.

Currently, Lisa cares for her elderly mother, an adult daughter who suffers from Fibromyalgia and cardiac issues and her adult son who has Type 1 diabetes.

Penny Rose Haddon joins Denise to share how she went from blogging about caring for her mom to publishing a book, An Insurance Policy for the Big One: My Mom, Her Mind and Me, about her experiences.

About An Insurance Policy for the Big One: My Mom, Her Mind and Me

"We went to parks, volunteered at a pet store, shopped, took walks," writes Penny Rose Haddon about the summer after her mom's diagnosis with dementia. "Once in a while, she would nonchalantly peer around the front seat of the car and say to me, 'And are your parents still alive?' She still carried a purse, wallet, and checkbook, wore her diamond and ruby rings, sported gold chains. The veneer was cracking but it was manageable."

In her book, Penny writes about what happened after that summer: Distrust, anger and resistance. Penny shares the story of caring for her mom using song lyrics and pop culture references to make sense of her mom's descent into dementia. Through Penny's writing, we see what day after day is like with dementia while witnessing the resilience of two women determined to make the best of it.

You can download Penny's Kindle book, An Insurance Policy for the Big One: My Mom, Her Mind and Me, for free beginning on May 15, 2017, and ending on May 19, 2017.

Meet the founder and staff of Reassure Analytics, our 2016 National Caregiving Technology and Product Pitch Winner.

Oscar E. Joining Dr. Rodriguez will be:

·       Hanson Chang, who oversees product strategy and development for Care|Mind, is an entrepreneur with over a decade of experience in the healthcare industry. While he resides hundreds of miles from his parents and grandparents, he maintains regular contact through the phone, FaceTime, and Care|Mind.

·       Sarah McMains oversees Care|Mind's marketing strategy and marketing efforts. Sarah works as a Director of Strategy at a digital agency, Huge Inc. Sarah's parents and grandparents live far away (some in Australia!), but she uses technology like FaceTime, Care|Mind, text, and email to stay connected and updated on their health.
