What if your performance wasn’t just about your mindset, but your mitochondria? What if quality of life came down to what’s in—and around—your nervous system?
In this episode, Ruth Pearce and Shannon Eastman sit down to explore the lived experience of Nervous System Intelligence through the lens of environment—both visible and invisible. From the fluorescent lights we ignore to the subtle electromagnetic fields that shape our biology, this conversation opens up a rarely-discussed dimension of performance, presence, and recovery.
Together, they reflect on their personal 6-week journey using the SomaVedic device—what shifted, what didn’t, and why it matters.
Expect insights on:– How quality of life is a nervous system conversation – What your environment is doing to you (whether you believe it or not) – SomaVedic as a tool for coherence, recovery, and performance – The role of terrain in regulating state, capacity, and signal clarity
This is a conversation for the curious, the skeptical, and those building a life with nervous system mastery at the center.

Episode 10 will go down as one of my all time favourites. I appreciated the wisdom, insight and opportunity to learn from a business mind who prioritises consciousness as a tool to grow your business into the ultimate exit. There was no effort required in making the invisibile, visible in ways that land, and shift, and compel a new way of seeing.
We covered a lot of ground and each had their own pause for relfection - from what is consciousness, focus, perception, their application in business, along with the idea that "how-to", frameworks and methodologies, are needed far less, when one has a good idea of who they are, and how best to access their entire human.
An inspiring, rich exchange with much learning and material to ponder long after.

Townsend helped generate over $1.5 billion in revenue and more than $500 million in personal wealth for founders—and he says the key to it all isn’t strategy or hustle… it’s consciousness.
He is a coach, advisor, and truth-teller to some of the world’s most ambitious founders and top-performing coaches. After losing everything in his first business—his health, his marriage, and his net worth—he rebuilt from the inside out. Dr. Joshua Rosenthal joins me for a game-changing conversation on EMFs, coherence, and the invisible field your nervous system is trying to regulate within—whether you're aware of it or not.
Most orf us would be forgiven for feeling tired, foggy, or fried. As a society, life is different than generations before - and - we can do some easy things to shift this a lot. I invited Dr. Rosenthal to help explain the invisible reasons as to why we're more fried, and why no amount of green smoothies or productivity hacks can fix a nervous system that’s living inside constant, low-grade threat.
Dr. Rosenthal helps us understand what’s really happening inside our environment—from EMFs and mitochondrial disruption to ATP loss and circadian dysregulation. Together, we map what this means for energy, focus, sleep, emotional steadiness, and long-term vitality.
What We Cover: * What your nervous system is actually responding to in modern environments * The role of frequency, pressure, and pattern in cellular regulation * How electromagnetic environments disrupt ATP, communication, and coherence * The link between mitochondrial health and nervous system flexibility * Why creating a coherent field around you might be a life changer for you
Personal Insight & Special Mention Goes To My SomaVedic Device! Over the past 6 weeks, I’ve been using a device from SomaVedic—a passive technology that creates a coherent, supportive field in the spaces we live and work in. Dr. Rosenthal and I discuss why it has helped my partner and I. so much about half way through this episode.
The results?
💤 My sleep quality and quantity improved by over 65% by week 4. I'm not sure I ever really slept with quality, before this device. 💤 My partner, who began with a far more challenging relationship to sleep than myself, for over 10 years longer than my struggle, saw a solid 30% increase in quality and quantity of his sleep by week 6.
And we’re still inside a 3-month cycle. We were both big fans of SomaVedic BEFORE this episode was recorded - after listening to Dr. Rosenthal for the first 30 minutes - my love and appreciation for this device has 10x'd. Leo and I agree, we would not live life without one now. This is them > > www.somavedic.com

This is episode 7, Inspired by some great comments on a linkedin post I made earlier, over here. I got inspired to riff off the comments and speak to something in a bit more depth and specificity as we all get our heads around this nervous system stuff. When we do, this gets to become leverage creating major shifts in the quality of our life - around that entire wheel (as in the wheel of life).

I hit record 3x as I got all choked up at seeing the truth of this headline. The End of Survival Mode is attainable, accessible and I'm committed to sharing what I can with you to get your level of understanding on this high enough that you can see it too.
In this episode I start to talk inside the distinction of You, and Your Nervous System. A favourite quote I like to pull out now is that this is not about you. This is about your nervous system. It wants (needs) micro, slow, gentle done a few times a day, for a few months - to maximise the magic of things like neuroplasticity, bioplasticity - the very bits that change the program it is committed to executing.
A wee milestone episode for me asI feel all sorts evoked by the headline on this one. Because after 40 years running for my life, I am in the space beyond survival mode. And I never knew that this space even existed. I was more focused on "managing as best I can".

Dr. Abrar Hussain is back to help us stand on some foundational concepts as it relates to all things #NervousSystemIntelligence. We cover the 3 nervous system states, why they matter, what creates them and how to navigate each one .I find myself asserting that our nervous system is 80% of the solution. That being stuck in a spin cycle of anxiety, tension, over analysis, scarcity and unhelpful behaviours is repairable. In my experience, long term, sustainable repair is found by working with, and through, your nervous system.
CAT Basics (Quick Recap) Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) explores relational patterns—especially how we relate to ourselves and others through learned roles. These patterns shape how we respond emotionally and physiologically.
CAT lens: Often rooted in past roles like criticised, neglected, or abandoned. The nervous system learned to stay on alert due to early relationships.
Examples:
Trapped in repeating emotional loops
Co-regulation What it is: Calming through connection. Another person’s steady presence helps you feel safe.
CAT lens: Reflects roles like soothing to soothed. In therapy or healthy relationships, this helps rewrite old patterns of fear, rejection, or abandonment.
Examples:
Therapist offering a regulated, grounding presence
Self-regulation What it is: You soothe your own system using awareness and tools. It’s learned, not automatic.
CAT lens: A sign you’ve internalized healthier roles—like compassionate to comforted. You replace old self-critical voices with steadier, kinder ones.
Examples:
🔄 In Short: * Dysregulation = old survival patterns in overdrive * Co-regulation = healing through connection * Self-regulation = internalised care and steadiness

This episode examines something that happened to me (Shannon Eastman) earlier today. I bombed my podcast and inside that experience I got to see something that feels helpful to share with you. I mention my daily practice in this episode. You'll find that here >
When someone taps into an old, unresolved emotional wound — especially one rooted in childhood dysregulation — the nervous system doesn’t recognize it as the past. It often responds as though the threat is happening now.
Here’s what typically happens in the body and nervous system:
Neurobiological Time Travel The nervous system is non-verbal and non-linear. When triggered, it reactivates the physiological and emotional patterns from the original moment, not the current reality. This is often referred to as "implicit memory" — felt, but not consciously recalled.
Survival State Re-Activation Depending on how the nervous system coped back then, a person may automatically enter:
Fight – agitation, blame, control
This is not a choice — it’s the nervous system’s best attempt to protect the system with what it learned during developmental years
This is why:
“Calm down” is ineffective
Physiological Distress Common physical symptoms include:
Tight chest
The body is preparing for a threat that no longer exists — but it doesn’t know that.
All of this is the result of a nervous system remembering pain, not processing reality.

I would use words like alignment, allowing, and endless access to everything to describe life with a regulated nervous system. It's being able to meet and greet conflict with compassion and self awareness, not the absence of conflict. It's being met with direct confrontation and feeling neutral in your body. The need to defend, retaliate, or set the record straight becomes less important than having compassion for miscommunication, blindspots and stepping on toes that you didn't mean to step on.
In this episode I take a candid look at the version of excruciating I have left behind, and what life is like at this part of the river. What I get to do now, who I get to be, along with the choices, the capacity and the curiosity I have now where there was once so much anger.
Creating Life with a Regulated Nervous System * Suddenly, there's space to breathe, to choose, to feel without being drowned. * You begin to design days rich with purpose and meaning, not just merely survive them. * Relationships feel safer. Rest becomes real. You move from defense to design. * Life becomes co-creative — with your body, with others, with the world. * There’s ease, hum, alignment — not because life is easy, but because you’re no longer at war with your own system.
The Excruciating Effort That Life Was Before * Everything took ten times the energy, if you could even be bothered then. * Joy was fleeting, or suspicious. * Restless nights. Tight jaw. The constant edge of collapse or explosion. * The body was not a home — it was a battlefield that I avoided, or drank to numb. * Stability was a performance but inside, it was a flood, a fire, or a freeze.

I'm taking an episode (or two) to get real about what life is life 5 years into my own recovery from C-PTSD using nervous system regulation. Kind of like a before and after as I reflect on 10 of the more obvious (for me) insights and distinctions.
Survival Mode Can Look Like Success You can be sharp, fast, productive — and still be running entirely on stress hormones. Just because it’s working doesn’t mean it’s well.
You’re Not Broken — Your Nervous System is Braced The exhaustion, disconnection, and inability to “bounce back” aren’t flaws. They’re signs your system is over-capacity and doing its best to protect you.
Burnout Isn’t a Mindset Problem You can’t mindset your way out of nervous system depletion. More grit, more goals, and more gratitude lists won’t fix a body that’s stuck in overdrive. And holy gawd did I ever get the t-shirt on the mindset effort.
Rest Is Not a Reward It's not something you "earn" once everything’s done. Rest is a biological need — and the gateway back to creativity, clarity, and joy and.. more productivity. Who knew?
Emotional Intelligence Isn’t a Skill — It’s a State EQ isn’t something you do. It’s something you Be. It's a by product of a healthy nervous system. Dysregulated = disconnected.
You Don’t Heal by Thinking — You Heal by Feeling (Safely) No amount of insight replaces what your nervous system needs to feel. Healing is about experiencing safety in your actual nervous system. That stringy bit of anatomy is what needs to feel safe.
Boundaries Aren’t Walls — They’re Regulation Tools Saying no isn’t selfish. It’s how you teach your system that you matter too. And when you do, your Nervous System can trust you and start to relax.
You Can’t Cope Your Way Into Aliveness Coping got you here — and that matters. But at some point, surviving becomes its own kind of stuck. Aliveness needs capacity, not just coping strategies.
Your (Body) Nervous System Isn’t the Enemy — It’s the Compass It’s not trying to ruin your life — it’s trying to keep you alive. Learning to speak its language is the most powerful thing you’ll ever do.
You’re Allowed to Build a Life That Doesn’t Require You to Abandon Yourself to Succeed That’s not weak. That’s wisdom. That’s leadership. That’s freedom.

We're back with Dr. Abrar Hussain to kick off Series 4, Episode 1 as we bring another lens on all things "40+ professional, highly functioning, not-always-ok" with an emphasis on all things relational.
Here's a brief summary of what Dr. Hussain covers in this podcast:
We Exist Within Systems — Not in Isolation We are not isolated beings; we exist within a complex web of systems. Internally, we have biological systems like the nervous system. Externally, we are embedded in relational systems — families, communities, societies — all of which interact with and influence each other. Dr. Hussain introduced the Rule of Thirds: You bring a third of the dynamic. The other person brings a third of the dynamic, and the space in between you holds the other third.
The Nervous System: Our Internal Command Center Among our internal systems, the nervous system is perhaps the most powerful. It is always learning, constantly scanning for cues that it is either safe and can trust what is happening, or it is not safe, it can't trust, and needs to go into defence mode, and then adapt accordingly.
It helps us make judgments, assess risk, and grow. But it is also vulnerable. Its bandwidth is limited, and it can become overwhelmed or dysregulated when too much is happening — especially in environments, or with people it determines to be unsafe, or not trustworthy.
What happens around us directly affects our nervous system. Our relational experiences — how people treat us, respond to us, or ignore us — are encoded as safety or threat. Our nervous system learns not just from what is said, but from tone, facial expressions, body language, and presence.
The Blueprint of Relationships: Childhood and "The Dance" Our earliest relationships create the template we carry into adulthood. Childhood experiences — whether nurturing or challenging — shape our nervous system’s default settings. They teach us what to expect from others, how to relate, how to protect ourselves, and what it means to be loved or rejected.
Dr. Hussain explains how these patterns are reflected in what CAT (Cognitive Analytic Therapy) calls reciprocal roles — learned dynamics that we replay in adult relationships. This becomes “the dance” — a repeating pattern, often unconscious, driven by our nervous system’s learned responses to relational cues.
Relational Safety: A Two-Way Street Our nervous system is relational — it is in constant communication with the nervous systems of those around us. For true safety to exist, both people in a relationship need to feel safe with each other in mind AND nervous system. This mutual co-regulation is the foundation of secure connection.
Trauma and the Nervous System Trauma lives in the nervous system. Nearly all trauma is relational — caused by someone, something, or the absence of someone or something. When left unhealed, trauma fragments become lodged in the memory networks of the nervous system.
These fragments don't stay quiet. They resurface as flashbacks, nightmares, emotional dysregulation, or even physical symptoms. The nervous system holds onto these pieces, waiting for the safety and opportunity to process and heal.

Roseanne Reilly joins me (Shannon Eastman) for episode 5 of our 6 part series - A #NervousSystemInformed approach to finding your way out of the dark. We do a brief recap on the #NervousSystemContinuum and its 4 states: Survival Mode, Dysregulation, Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation. We revisit how each state determines your inner world... we used me as an example so words like 'fear-soaked' insides, that impacts your outer world, which looked a lot like the need to 'defend', 'protect', 'ghost', 'chaos' and 'hide'.
This episode examines the difference between what it means to be #NervousSystemInformed vs what it looks like to live this work. As it goes, we ended this exchange in just short of 30-minutes.
It's not easy to wrap our heads around what life is like AFTER we find our way out when you're still lost in the dark - I do my best to objectively reflect on who I was, what I was like, the evidence my life demonstrated before this work, and now who I get to be, what I get to do, and how I show up, today.
Recently, a dear friend of mine shook her head, looking me dead in the eye and suggested she hardly recognises me today. That life for me before this work was on par with a dumpster fire. I reckon 5% of me flinched recognising its truth. 95% of me embraced her, laughing, and shaking my head in disbelief at how much can change, and how much is available on this side of doing the nervous system work. I wouldn't have (couldn't have) dreamed that I could have a quality of life like the one I have now. This episode attempts to communicate that exact distinction.
If you're reading this and feeling any sort of grip, pinch or shallow breathing wondering how I did it and if it might work for you too, www.handsoftimehealing.com is Roseanne's website. Her DIY program is 97 USD.

We are in part 4 of a 6 part series as we unpack Roseanne's Nervous System Informed Approach to finding stable ground in ways that are long lasting. So ways that engage neuroplasticity, bioplasticity and easily accessible to you, when you know what's what.
In this episode we do a quick recap on the 6 dynamic stages of the Nervous System Informed Approach, we revisit the Nervous System Continuum and its 4 key states: survival mode, dysregulation, self-regulation, and co-regulation. We recap the Inner World and how it informs you Outer World. And then dive into Environment.
"The environment is the sole governing agent of the particle!" - Einstein
We can change the programs running our human on autopilot by consistently feeding new information in 60-second increments to our body. We do this through self-awareness that allows us to both recognise the internal grip that shows up in the body, and the things in our environment, that when we pause and connect with for 60-seconds, release the grip. Doing this consistently throughout your day, day-to-day provides your body with new information that changes the programs.
Our 5 senses consume information from our environment at the rate of 500 soduko books a minute (let's say). That information being taken in through a body locked in survival mode, will be distorted and misread signalling our nervous system that we are not-safe-can't-trust, which wil instruct 50 trillion cells in our body to animate accordingly. We can bring awareness that this is happening. Then we can cultivate an environment that deliberately feeds our 5 senses infromation that we are safe. The nervous system will then instruct 5 trillion cells in your body to animate accordingly. Improving executive function, opening up imagination, creative problem solving, all the stuff we need to be excellent at life.

Roseanne Reilly joins me for part 2 of a 6 part series sharing her framework on a Nervous System Informed approach to finding your way out of the dark. The Nervous System Continuum is covered as a critical first piece to this puzzle. We cover why and how we can find our nervous system inside these states, and take a closer look at the two forms of Survival Mode; the one that has you locked in and requires a nervous system restoration practice to unlock, and the Survival Mode we can find ourself visiting from time to time when we are inside the new stage of meeting & greeting our felt sense of self. When locked in survival mode is in effect, we can't move along the nervous system continuum in any sustained or elegant way. When we restore the nervous system, we can.
This episode shares a bit more detail on what life is like in the Self-Regulating phase of the continuum, what is avaialble, how life is different and more importantly, how to get there.

I'm all for a self-guided, DIY it till something changes kind of approach to finding your way out of the dark. I did exactly that for the first 3.5 to 4 years years of my recovery. Actually, a friend recently pointed out that my MSc I'm doing is kind of like my version of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - she's not wrong. But one day, by chance, I find myself in a conversation with someone who clearly articulted the pathway out of the dark for folks like me, inside 12 weeks.
I don't know if I believed her. I definitely wanted to and some part of me recognised it as true but my mind raced wondering how could it have taken me the guts of 4 years to do what she faciliates in 12 weeks. It would be months before I could get my head around the fact that intelligence has little to do with recovery.
Roseanne Reilly, Nervous System Restoration Practitioner has signed up for a 6 part series sharing her framework to shifting your life in pretty significant ways inside 12 weeks. We're taking it slow, keeping it small, and doing our best to ensure that Roseanne's Nervous System Informed Approach to finding your way out of the dark lands. It won't surprise you to hear I interject, interrupt and shimmy questions as I get really present to what exactly would I have needed to hear to just get me to pause long enough to hear her out. I've not quite found that magic place yet, but if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Hah!
Here's the overview we're mapping out over these 6 episodes:
A Nervous System Informed Approach has 6 dynamic parts: We are going to present all 6 parts of this framework starting what the Nervous System Continuum so that by the end, you will feel like you have a really solid introduction and a good idea of what to do next.
The 6 dynamic parts in Roseanne's Framework:

Roseanne Reilly, Nervous System Practitioner over at Hands Of Time Healing Dot Com shares the what, why and how of boundaries mapping what they look like when you are in survival mode, how they shift form when you are dysregulated, and what having boundaries in a self-regualted state looks like. A lot of firsts for me on a subject I had not taken to heart until recently.
Roseanne delivers quality insights, connects dots and seamlessly ties the idea of healthy boundaries to your neurobiological markers pending where on the Nervous System Continuum you are navigating life from. For example - people in survival mode don't have boundaries as much as they have the need to defend, protect, ghost, and abruptly throw up electric fences. People who are moving from survival mode into the dysregulation stage will have secret boundaries to master, until self-regulation states are achieved. People who spend a good bit of time navigating life nside self-regulation, boundaries look and feel very different.
One of my favourite take aways from this episode was learning that boundaries are neurobiological. They exist with the intention of keeping us centered, and not falling into emotional dysregulation. That grown up boundaries emerge fully when we know who we are, and have a good handle on where we start and end, in relation to others.

It started offline as a challenge about using the word 'toxic' to describe workplaces, cultures, teams that were being made sick by dysregulated leaders. 3 minutes in to this debate and Roseanne and I hit record. This felt like one for the library.
Roseanne Reilly, joins this series as a master practitioner of nervous system restoration. She speaks fluently on the topic of trauma, stress, body, and behaviour joining me (Shannon Eastman) for deep dives into the practical application of this science in business. I've brought up the idea of the toxic boss for a year now after looking in my own rearview mirror at my past self and seeing that my dysregulated nervous system, dysregulated others. Was that what we mean by toxic bosses? Roseanne says No! Let's not be hasty as toxic is a big word, void of compassion for a lot of people suffering and leaking all over the shop.
We also flipped the table and looked at this from the perspective of the dysregulated employee, working in the dysregulated business and got honest about what they might call it on the receiving end of working with/for a toxic boss.
Roseanne brings her insight and expertise to the table to explain what, why and how this is happening, and when we might want to call it toxic, and when we might want to call it something else.
While we don't bring any specific direction to labels, and constructs, we do open up a big conversation about what is going in the workplace through, and why, at the bottom of toxic workplaces, we find a lot of dysregulated nervous systems.

A Behind-The-Scenes conversation with Roseanne Reilly as we resolve how best to incorporate feedback we've received on our 2025 content plans. We have been exploring how best to communicate why the nervous system is so important to you personally and professionally. As it goes, this podcast left me (Shannon Eastman) with new take aways, new perspectives and a bit more clarity on how to package, prioritise and present what Roseanne calls, a nervous system informed approach to living a life that feels good. This is the evolution of Trauma Informed.
You'll hear the challenges, the debate and some criticism of how, and when and why along with a fair bit of Roseanne and I comparing notes that align her subject matter expertise, with my feelings, ideas and thoughts on the 40+ professional who is Highly Functioning, Not OK, and how we go about marrying the two.
This #WTTLO content initiative we're organsing for 2025 is personal and important. Personal becuase Roseanne and I both know life before and after nervous system regulation, and important because this information has the potential to change your life if we get it's delivery just so.
If you have an opinion, feedback or ideas to add to this exploration, you are welcome to get in touch with Roseanne or myself directly on email, whatsapp or linkedin. If you want to be involved as a content contributor, we'd love to hear from you too.

Resilience is a common word that can feel hard to pin down. Particularly when we find there is cheap brassy imitation Resilience, and Authentic Resilience, the kind that feels more like cashmere.
But what is it? Where does it come from? How do we get more of it? What zaps it? What does it do and why do we need it? Basic questions about a big topic that is mission critical to the 40+ professionals, the ones who are over achieving, super competent and - can't help but notice that life feels harder, heavier and it's getting smaller.
Roseanne Reilly is a master Nervous System Restoration Practitioner. She is a special guest on a few episodes (You're welcome) and today, we bring questions, examples, and situations related to resilience, so we can get to the bottom of this concept, from a unique lens of 40+, recovery and your nervous system. (The holy grail of recovery).

Resilience: I got the t-shirt, now what?
Roseanne and I round up 7 of the bigger insights we've covered to date sharing our respective take on each. This podcast debates, explores and maps the way out of the dark. We look at all of this through the lens of the 40+ professional from a high stress childhood and an ongoing stress career. Typically these are the overachievers, the super competent, and the very confident - but for the most part, only when they are at work.
Those 7 Insights include:

Roseanne Reilly and I (Shannon Eastman) meet in this episode to specifically map out the Nervous System and its 4 unique states. Survival Mode / Dysregulated / Self-Regulated / Co-Regulated and how we express inside each one. For example, you know someone is in Survival Mode when they are over the top about almost everything. Overreacting, Oversharing, Urgency, Hypervigilant etc.
We do our best to present WHY the nervous system is the holy grail of recovery... for the 40+ professional with a high stress childhood, ongoing stress career and at a point now, where life is getting harder, tighter and smaller.
And we go a bit off script towards the end riffing off the other, and sharing a bit of our own experiences before - and - after our nervous system was taken off of survival mode. As it goes, for both of us, we came out of survival mode for the first time in our lives, age 40ish.
You'll hear why Roseanne does what she does, and where to find a few lights that you can turn on now.
This episode is the flag in the ground that marks the beginning of a few more episodes like this as we map our way out of Survival Mode, through Dysregulation and into Self-Regulation on our way to Co-regulator.

Your Nervous System matters, a lot. How it works, arguably, matters more. For example, as an infant, your nervous system requires the nervous systems of your caregivers to provide for it, train it, support its development and maturity. (It's called co-regulation) - in its absence your nervous system gets stuck and disrupts all sorts, through adulthood, well into your 40s, until you deliberately invest in Nervous System Restoration efforts to repair and resolve.
Your nervous system communicates the age your operate at - toddler, teen, young adult. It will drive the agenda, until it can trust you to take over. Your nervous system has the ability to shut off access to parts of your brain, and switch on others.
Roseanne Reilly joins me for this episode on your nervous system - a back to basics for some, and an an entirely new space for the rest of us.

Roseanne will be joining as a special guest for standalone episodes, and her and I working in the background to cultivate a track of episodes specifically about nervous system restoration and the 40+ professional.
We each share our perspective on how this new joint (ad)venture came to be and our respective ideas about where we think this is going.

This is the query that once haunted me for more than a decade "I know what I am supposted to do, but I just can't do it!" I have invested 6 figures over my lifetime, (desperately) trying to make myself feel normal. I poured tirelessly over teachings - ancient through modern - studied with some brilliant minds - including one of my all time favourites ever, Dr. John Demartini - and yet, I still found myself falling down in the dark saying to myself, "I KNOW better. I know what to do.. why can't I just do it? Why is my life like this, why are my relationships like this..."
Roseanne Reilly joins #WTTLO? as a special guest for a few episodes over the coming months, to share her lens on a few things taking up too much mental real estate in the 40+ Professional.
And as I suspected, she nails it within the first 60-seconds with a reframe I didn't see coming. An excellent exchange on the what, why, and how that was well worth waiting for.

It's a new dawn, a new day, a new podcast, a new brand. And in this behind-the-scenes-style episode I fill you in on what happened since the summer of 24 until recently that tanspired in the name change, a new line up of guests and a refined focus.
What's staying the same?
Conversations about wellbeing and work for the 40+ professional who had a high stress childhood, ongoing stress lifestyle and now acutely aware that the coping strategies of late are no longer working. The need for sustainable has never been more important.
Exploring all the relevant wellbeing science out there, so we can pass on those signposts, and a few hand made maps, your way.
The Content in the form of PDFs, blog posts, videos will continue - only they will live on the rebranded website. www.whoturnedthelightson.com
The Directory - rebranded - will be remain as before.
What's changing?
The focus and intention has changed somewhat - this is less about Trauma Informed Growth - a stop in the proverbial river, and more about a lens with which to take in all of the river.
The guests are changing ... because we have a few tracks coming up - a track is 3 to 5 episodes on a specific track that has been planned for, cultivated and curated specifically to support the 40+ Profiessional - the person, and the impact in the workplace.
If you're new here, you will soon learn that we are following what wants to emerge, in real time and we ebb and flow accordingly.
Thanks for following along - do get in touch with any episode ideas, or guests you'd recommend we consider having on the show or feedback.

Jane Evans joins me to discuss one of my favourite topics - Trauma & Money. When it comes to answering some version of the question, "How much" or when we have to put a price on our value, or generate and maintain cashflow, the situation tends to be more white knuckles, than signed on the dotted line.
Why? More importantly, What can we do about it?
Jane brings a level of skill, mastery and experience in this exactly subject as we explore what is going on, what we can do about it and what change looks like. You will find Jane on LinkedIn over here > http://linkedin.com/in/janeevanswellness - Her website is www.thejaneevans.com

This is my first episode inspired by a few listeners who have been in touch with me to share how sex addiction has disrupted, or is disrupting their lives. I went looking for answers only to find two world-class experts in the area of Sex Addiction: Dr. Kirsty Loudon and Rob Watt.
Dr. Kirsty, Rob and myself have connected a few times over a couple of months to organise the content for this episode. We have distilled the information into two key questions: "How do I know I have a Sex Addiction vs. A Healthy Sex Life?" and "What is in the underbelly of Sex Addiction?" - So we cover things like: what is going on?, (which includes discussion of early attachment and sexual development), what would be helpful to understand about the nature of this?, and how can we help ourselves navigate our way back into healthy states?
Special thanks to Dr. Kirsty and Rob for the effort that went into this interview, and to Lucy, at Innisfree Therapy and her colleagues, who have made enormous contributions to the direction and structure of this episode.

Her name is Roseanne Reilly, an Irish woman in NYC, who is a masterful facilitator of individuals with C-PTSD. Her career path moved her through being a nurse, a health & safety educator and trainer, an advanced practitioner of Craniosacral Therapy, and today, a Trauma Informed Practitioner with dozens of qualifications and certifications to her name after more than 10 years study in the areas of stress and its affects on the brain-body. Roseanne herself has risen from the provebial ashes that allows her to show up in a way that facilitates the Highly Successful, Secretly in Despair folk who are exhausted!
In this episode, Roseanne shares a distinction between healthy stress, chronic stress, trauma stress, extended trauma stress and why the brain-body is the first stop on the way out of all of this.
We examine the 0-5 yrs old time frame answering the how and why those first 5 years significantly influence who we become as adults. Roseanne shares how the Nervous System is functioning under duress, and what steps we can take now to support our brain-body to recover. I ask Roseanne to get us to the starting line - "We have C-PTSD, now what?"
And... where is the starting line, what does it look like, what do we do there and how long before we get to move on? Roseanne shares valuable information on how you can do this on your own, and a few reasons as to why you can't before I ask Roseanne to tell me more about her 6-week R.I.S.E. program supported by 1-to-1 sessions with her, before we give her the floor for some final thoughts.
I learned so much in this episode. I am excited to be able to share this one with you.

This episode is a more candid look at the uglier sides of recovery as I reflect on the last 10 days or so where I have been all sorts of dysregulated, and then irritated that I am still 'falling down', and the honest look I had to take at what I am 'really' doing about my recovery. As it goes, what I am doing pales in comparison to what I let myself BELIEVE I am doing.
I share what I am doing now, in case it should inspire your own version. I also talk briefly about the 3 distinctions I have been pondering about the role of the body, in tandem with the 8 stages to C-PTSD recovery (a work in progress, for sure) and some cool tools I am using as part of those insights.
Consider this simply another episode for us both, to continue the learning.

I share the clarity I have gained, some distinctions I've made, and some suggestions on how and where to start. Starting is what matters most here. This is the episode where I unpack two areas that matter a lot when it comes to: healing, recovery and shifting out of the chaos of emotional overwhelm, emotional numbing, and emotional exhaustion, and into a space that feels really good to be in, even when stressful spaces, places and faces pop up. That means understanding; the body's role in your healing, how the body can expedite recovery, how the body will drive us to React or Respond during times of stress, and appreciating the distinction between supporting your body, being in your body and working with body (E.g. Body Work). Some of the key terms I use in this episode include: #NervousSystem, #SelfRegulation, #MindBodyCommunication, #ImplicitMemory, #Unconscious, #RepressedEmotion, #EmotionRecovery, #EmotionRelease, #Reparenting, #Reframing. I also introduce an imaginary visual aid (a spectrum) to explain Body Work for 3 distinct activities (recover, release, reparent) that I have found helpful in order to better understand this specific area. Those 3 areas plotted along my imaginary spectrum include: Ancient Practices, Clinical Practices, Modern Practices. You are invited to simply enter the spot on the spectrum that feels most interesting for you because there is no one-way-to-do-this.

An episode that looks at one of the most important tools that I've used to transform my life from chaos and trainwrecks, to calm and having all sorts of fun thriving.
2 years ago I didn't quite get the value of this practice; I read a few books, watched a few videos and gave it a go. Today? I realise if I had it to do all over again - this journey out of the proverbial void - I would do it quite differently.
In this episode I share what, why, where, how of Self Regulation and compare and contrast life before and after and why it matters so much to me now.

Elizabeth Walker, Addiction Recovery Coach joins this episode where we bring out a few distinctions around: what is Supporting the Body, Coming into the Body, and Body Work, along with a look at the consistent stages one moves through to exit the proverbial void, while covering how unique each journey on the path is.
Elizabeth shares her journey form science into Body Work, and how we can use the sensations and feelings in the body to bring into our awareness the past experiences, buried alive, that run the day-to-day show.
Sensations are the language of our unconscious past wanting to be integrated. Doing so, allows you to reach the stage of (re)creation - where Elizabeth coaches her clients, to access the internal architect that gathers the jagged pieces that once was, and use those pieces to create a Mosaic that directs a future worth living.

Zara Juricic joins me to share her experience of life before she was diagnosed with C-PTSD, what it was like in the early days of the diagnosis, and what life in recovery can feel like.
A powerful story from the 'highly successful, fabulous at life, secretly in despair' lens that finally brought Zara to a grinding halt. This story is shared to inspire you, remind you that you are not alone in this, and reassert that there is a way out.
As it goes, the steps out of the void are pretty clear and consistent in nature. It will be 'How' you navigate those steps out of the void, that will be unique to you. Body work, body work, body work, and body work, on your own and-or faciltiated by another, is recommended.

I cover a lot of ground in this episode including some real life examples from the past few weeks to set up some new insights on: co-regulation, self-regulation, emotional regulation (or the absence there of - dysregulation) before sharing the practice I am inside of to find my way out, along with a wee stopover to Carl Jung's two cents where he says: "Unless you make the unconscious, conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate."
So in a nutshell, this episode is really about those uncomfortable emotions being the way in, if you are to find your way out.

I’ve had an emotionally dysregulated morning. I use this episode to share my current observations of what is happening, the 3 Year old Ninja that brought this on, what I’m doing to self regulate and how I am connecting some dots. This morning's experience has also expanded my 4 part framework of c-PTSD recovery to include a 5th stage. I sense there will be 6th stage in the coming weeks. So consider this episode as simply an opportunity for us both to learn together using a very recent (earlier today) and real (mine) case study.

I share why I firmly believe that the future will have us all trauma-informed. This episode is more business flavoured, and introduces my Brain-Body-Business-Mind (aka Trauma Informed) Approach to Business Growth. I talk about where this language is coming from, why this is moving deeper into the mainsteam, the stats, and give some examples along with a few more brain-body resources I am excited about. I mention two practitioners I have worked with - their contact details are below. Finally I touch on the fact that thoughts and words have little effect on dysregulated physiology, yet dysregulated physiology is the most influential factor on our words and thoughts.
This is Clara Jana Vavrova - https://www.facebook.com/jana.vavrova.3517/about - I flew to Prague to work with Clara on a Brain-Body resource called Constellation Work, from the Internal Family Systems school of thought. A life changing experience. Clara offers online sessions as well.
This is Stephanie Hartwell - https://www.facebook.com/stephanie.burton.104 - Stephanie is in London, UK and has a toolbox full of brain-body resources, she is known for her Havening work, and my sessions with her tend to have a ripple effect I experience weeks after the sessions. Cannot recommend Stephanie enough.
I mention two stages of dysregulation; primary and maintenance.
Primary is stage 1 - moving from Triage to Treatment, stage 2, is your daily practice. I talk about some resources to consider here, along with some ideas on home treatments.

I use this episode to dissect two things; my spectacular overreaction to a seemingly normal situation that took place yesterday, before dissecting a framework I've been designing for a few months now, to better help me understand what c-PTSD Recovery looks like, sounds like and feels like as I move through it. I'm sharing what I learned about me, my overreaction, my recovery, those 4-stages to recovery, and a wee look at the cost involved with the lingering effects of stress, that we continue to avoid, ignore or distract from.

An interesting episode for me as I explore the impact a Toxic Boss can have on their team and the business along with why, how and when my own Toxic Boss style would have been amped up, with a quick look at the role C-PTSD plays on all sides of this table. Of course, I offer only one lens on a subject that deserves a far deeper review of it.
I'd like to throw my hat in that ring and suggest.... undiagnosed C-PTSD be considered.

This episode briefly looks at 8 benefits of C-PTSD that lend themselves well to the workplace and generating income, before a quick definition of what contributes to Financial Wellbeing, before I share my thoughts on why C-PTSD can wreak so much havoc with one's financial situation that Financial Insecurity is the space most people with past unresolved stress, continue to operate in. I am sharing my insights on where I am at today in the area of C-PTSD and: money, earning, pricing, investing that will no doubt evolve and shift over the coming years. Consider this my proverbial flag in the ground as I begin to better understand the role of C-PTSD at Work.

I'm shooting from the hip here as I explore my thoughts, insights, and learnings in tandem with a dozen conversations these last few weeks on my challenges with the Growth Mindset industry. The 'Cognitive Reframing' that yields very little long lasting change when... (there's the key for my current assessment) 'when'. But what about Tony Robbins lot who walk on fire? What about focus as a portal? What...?
I know! I agree, AND, I'd like to add my two cents on when this is an incomplete truth, when it is abusive, and when it works. An inquiry I reckon I'll continue to explore for at least the next 5 years. And - here is where I am at with it, just now.

This episode was inspired by Carl Jung. Two quotes in particular. "You meet your destiny on the road you took to avoid it" and "People will do anything, no matter how absurd, to avoid meeting their own soul". This episode takes a look at what it looks like when one is lost in the void, the likely destinations your route through the void will drop you off in ,and what you can do to get out of the proverbial Void, or if you've travelled long enough, how to get out of that destination you may have ended up in.

In this episode, I want to explore this subject, as I have done several times in the past. Only this time, through the brain-body-mind lens. Up until a few years ago, my examination of this subject was largely mind-over-matter, a truly futile endeavour.
“I know what I am supposed to do, but I just can’t do it!”
The reality is we do know. The challenge is we just can’t act, not in an authentic, inspired, fun-to-do-it kind of way. We will look at Brain-Body Dysregulation, Bottom Up resources, Alignment, Congruency and Authenticity and some ideas on how to transform Hiding into Being Seen.
I mention Dr. Bruce Lipton's video, Biology of Belief. Here's the link to his full lecture as promised. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAM-4HN2p58

Way too many professionals with unresolved trauma in their past have a tumultuous relationship with money. Simply put, there is typically an ongoing shortage with a whole lot of chaos. Spikes in earnings are often met with periods of famine. They can earn, and earn well, but not necessarily consistently.
They can move mountains for you, negotiate like a beast… for you, but when it comes to themselves, those skills to move mountains and fiercely negotiate, might flutter for a moment, only to evaporate in the next moment.
I use this episode to call this out, and look at why this is, and how to get out from under it.

Child hood trauma & the brick walls in business.
A conversation whose time has come as we unpack the relationship between early trauma and how it expresses in our business as adults - that we're almost certainly unaware of.
Dr. Steve joins us to share his experience of seeing his 6 yr old self, losing his father to divorce, and how that void in his young life expressed in his business - until it healed - the effects in his business, family, leadership and world post healing gave him pause as he considered the trauma in childhood, gone unprocessed, becomes the stuff that weighs us down, holds us back and keeps us stuck, in our business.
Meet Dr. Steven:

The journey from #head2heart is 3-extraordinary feet. For some of us, we're dragged kicking and screaming. For others it's a spontaneous awakening on the top of a mountain, in Denver Colorado, where you get to experience the magic of spine, breath, body that sends you into an tear filled awakening, as you marvel at the body and what else it has to offer. Dr. Steve came off that mountain one evening, only to return to Canada the next morning to open his own practice, and introduce the world to holistic chiropractic therapy to heal, clear and evolve people in their business and personal worlds.

Earle Hall joins us to discuss Technology as a catalyst for Freedom. Freedom to be yourself, freedom to express your true self, and probably even help resolve how to get over our fear of judgement. Alison Butters talks about her experience in transitioning from hiding from her own “professional cloak” to being seen. There are a lot of people who are uncomfortable with the idea of being seen and showing personal vulnerabilities because of the three things:
The facilitators also have their own “wounds” which makes credibility and authenticity in performing the work questionable. There is this struggle in resolving own struggles and having to help other people dealing with the same problems in the corporate world. Valuing the quality of your own work is the fastest way in learning and transforming self-worth.
In dealing with people’s opinion, it is important to know which ones should be valued more because it doesn’t necessarily define the self-worth of a person. It opens up an opportunity in resiliency against the bad opinions and learning more about the self. The idea of self-evolution is taking a step in fighting the war within the self to self-actualisation.
Meet Alison:
Alison Butters a Certified Life Coach and NLP Practitioner, recognized by the Association for Professional Coaching. Along with Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) I use Hypnosis and Timeline Coaching. I want to help my clients to experience their own eudaimonia . This is an unique to each person as their own fingerprint and therefore defined on each individuals own terms.

Pit stops on the journey to self-actualisation can at times be triggering - feel bitter and painful - and yet they must. The poison is often in the medicine.
In those moments of challenge, two parts of us respond: The Mind - inviting us to stop the pain and run. The Heart - inviting us to stay still and become more curious about what is stirring the pain. Dr Dave and Shannon Eastman explore congruency, an individual's unique set of values, the journey we choose to pursue sometimes labelled self-actualisation; and the wobbly ugly bits that are par for the course.

Dino and Shannon explores context and answers to these questions:
What is 'growth'?
Why 'Character-led Business?
Where do most small business owners go wrong or awry?
Why the focus on critical thinking? Isn't 'action' more valuable?
Is there a place in business for 'Professional Compassion'? (usually leads to a discussion of Radical Transparency and Brutal Honesty).

In this first episode of the Work That Matters podcast, Keith and Shannon explore context and answers to these questions:
About Keith:
Keith Blakemore-Noble - UK's #1 Fear Strategist, coach, international speaker, multi-time best-selling author, hypnotist and occasional magician.
And someone who, for far too many years, was massively held back by a very strong social phobia – speaking with strangers, or even meeting strangers, was at best deeply uncomfortable, and at worst utterly terrifying for him. For far too many years.
So he did the logical thing – he pursued a 20 year career in IT with some success (becoming a Fellow of the BCS in the process).
Until one panic attack too many, which forced him to reconsider his life.
So he studied NLP and hypnosis, used those tools to conquer his own fears and phobias, and since 2010 he has helped others around the world to transform their deepest fears into their greatest strengths through his coaching, speaking, books, and trainings. Indeed, since 2010 he has helped over 5,000 people to transform their lives.
Having travelled the world for a while doing this, he has settled back in his native Scotland, where he is focusing on the next step in his journey of helping as many people as he can to conquer their fears.
