Dr. Yolanda Williams is from Gary, Indiana. She's a pastor, activist, educator, long-time Minnesota resident, and is excellent at thinking outside the box. We talk about the loneliness of being black in Minnesota and the unique life of having a police officer as a father. She was a senior lecturer at the University of Minnesota for 24 years and is currently pastor at Glenwood United Parish in Glenwood, Minnesota. She has a fur-baby and a great laugh.

Jon Van Hofwegen was just an ordinary boy from small-town Iowa, until a snow tubing accident turned his life upside-down. We talk about 90s Christian ska bands and what it means to find God in the science of healing.
Today therapist Melanie Alford reflects on finding mental health and healing, even in a pandemic. We talk about the joys of 4-year-olds, spiders, queerness in church, and creating "routes for reflection" in order to stay centered.

This sermon is considering the way superstition affects our believe or (lack of) in God. Also, it is worth noting, there was a baptism this sunday, so the sermon specifically deals with baptism at the close for that reason.
It's not that we've come to a place of irreligion. It's not as if we have no hope for the future of the church. It's more like, we have understandable catches in the fabric of our daily movement that make it hard to imagine a God who even cares.

This is week one of our Scary Close sermon and discussion series. A time committed to individually uncover practices and patterns that help us live like the wholehearted.
We are "beggars showing other beggars where to find bread." The love of God in Jesus, which takes us a lifetime to unearth, endure and enjoy, is not held in reserve. We are called to equip and lead others into the same risky and life-giving effort, to go into the world and wear the identity of people loved by God in their daily life. We trust in Jesus's spirit to carry on God's legacy outside of us, even despite us.
We gather weekly to celebrate, remind and stand fast in our identity as people loved by God. We read together, eat together and sing together for we are united in this love. We celebrate what we do not deserve as individuals and a community.

Adjusting to the weight that we no longer bear because of God’s love for us in Jesus requires a measure of strength, humility and authenticity. Upon further observation we realize we are then called to bear the burden of our neighbor and enemy. The love of God is a sacrificial love which gives and gives unto death. We are called to give and give; unto death.
