Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican political activist,
publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator has
been commonly remembered as promoting a
movement of “back to Africa” however he created
the largest mass movement in African-American
history proclaiming a black nationalist "Back to
Africa" message. Garvey appeal and influence were
felt not only in America but in Canada, the
Caribbean, and throughout Africa.
Garvey was convinced that integration would never
happen and that only economic, political, and
cultural success on the part of African Americans
would bring about equality and respect of all people
of African descent. His brand of black nationalism
had three components—unity, pride in the African
cultural heritage, and complete autonomy. Garvey
believed people of African descent could establish a
great independent nation in their ancient homeland
of Africa. He took the self-help message of Booker
T. Washington and adapted it to the situation he
saw in America, taking a somewhat individualistic,
integrationist philosophy and turning it into a more

annual Milwaukee Black Theater Festival from August 10-14. The week-long celebration of Black arts
and culture features free and ticketed events throughout each day, including full-production and staged
reading plays, an R&B Gospel fundraiser concert, spoken word and dance performances, and talk-
back and panel discussions. This year’s theme is The Black Family: Generations Speak! presented by
generations of Black artists, includes events for the entire family, acknowledges community challenges,
and encourages everyone to come together now to celebrate Black theater, healing, and unity stories
and put a spotlight on emerging young Black playwrights and professional theater organizations.

Today, approximately one-third of the largest 100 cities in America have Black mayors. In the city of Milwaukee, WI, Black leadership has a “sextuplet” with Black men filling the most powerful positions in the city, including Mayor’s Office, Sheriff Department, County Executive, Chief of Police, Superintendent of Public Schools, and City Attorney. In the past, when Black people gained access to leadership positions in our major metropolitan areas, the tax base and infrastructure are suffering. For various reasons, white-flight usually occurred. Now is the time to redefine what’s possible when Black people are entrusted with governance. The focus of our broadcast is to acknowledge problems and create solutions for the future.
Life is a conversation, and any problem in life can be resolved within the context of a conversation. We need speaking and listening to have the power to create solutions.

Five organizations have come together to create the James Campbell Learning Circle, to form leadership development, and created with the mission of trying to tackle some of the ideological confusion that exists inside of our communities by going back to the basics.
Fifty years ago, only 4 percent of people of African descent had earned a college degree. During that same time, only 31 percent of people of African descent had earned a high school diploma. Currently, those figures have changed to 20% for college completion and 84% for high school completion. For people of African descent, there has always been suppression, oppression, and even terror, when it comes to education. From grade school to professional school, people of African descent have experienced unequal educational opportunity and discrimination because of race, caste, and social class. Even after the Brown vs Board of Education U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1954, schools are still segregated and educational opportunity is still unequal. There are also constraints against teaching the truth about U.S history.

At a time when crime rates were going down, incarceration rates were going sky-high in the U.S. Incarceration has increased 500% within the last 40 years. Research indicates that all people, Black and White, are committing crimes at the same rate, however, Black people are over-represented in the Criminal Justice System at an alarming rate. Wisconsin imprisons one in every 36 Black adults, which is 12 times the rate of white incarceration. As a system of wires designed to capture the caged bird, such as the systemic and structural racism which deprives Black people of their freedom and liberty. From a distance, the cage appears as one structure. A closer examination finds that each wire is constructed and designed with a particular purpose and effect, and is coordinated like the Criminal Justice System. A giant of the health care profession joined the Ancestors this month. Dr. Lester Carter has served the Milwaukee community since arriving in 1968. He, like many black pharmacists, was the only source of medical care for African Americans well into the 20th century. When black people were not welcome at hospitals and there were few physicians who were willing to treat black people, black pharmacists were our source of professional advice. Dr. Carter has distinguished himself by studying many natural treatments including the use of food and supplements as a means to bring about healing. He was a person the youth of the community could visit at his drugstore and have a conversation about the importance of health. Few of their drugstores exist today but we would like to remember and celebrate those who have been there for us when no one else would help.

The East was an educational and cultural center founded in 1969 in Brooklyn, New York by a group including students from the African American Student Association (ASA) and Jitu Weusi (Les Campbell), The East was a cultural, educational, and arts organization based on principles of self-determination, nation-building, and Black consciousness. Originally located at 10 Claver Place in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. The East served as a center for many cultural, educational, and community activities. It provided daycare for children and evening classes for adults and served as home for Black News, a bookstore, restaurant, catering service, food co-op, and a bi-weekly national Black nationalist news publication. The East functioned as home to an independent African-centered school named Uhuru Sasa Shule whose name translates to "Freedom Now" in Kiswahili.

After four hundred years of slavery, including acculturation, marginalization, and terror, people of African descent are ignorant of who we are, and how we governed ourselves before slavery and the plantation system. The governance structure of African people, before 1619, was based upon an organized community. African people were governed by the wisdom of the Elders, like indigenous people throughout the world.
Now, our Elders are warehoused in nursing homes, where their wisdom is ignored, and where they simply wait to die. Currently, our government is run by capitalistic interest and the police, formerly the slave patrol. The Sankofa Council of Milwaukee is looking back to reclaim our legacy of leadership and self-governance.

<><>THE EAST- AN EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL CENTER<><>was founded in 1969 in Brooklyn, New York by a group including students from the African American Student Association (ASA) and Jitu Weusi (Les Campbell), The East was a cultural, educational, and arts organization based on principles of self-determination, nation-building, and Black consciousness.
Originally located at 10 Claver Place in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. The East served as a center for many cultural, educational, and community activities. It provided daycare for children and evening classes for adults and served as home for Black News, a bookstore, restaurant, catering service, food co-op, and a bi-weekly national Black nationalist news publication. The East functioned as home to an independent African-centered school named Uhuru Sasa Shule whose name translates to "Freedom Now" in Kiswahili.
The East was also an important art center in Brooklyn, serving as a weekend jazz club, salon, and concert venue for Black musicians[2] and rivaling the popular clubs and theaters of Harlem.[1] It hosted performers including the Last Poets, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, McCoy Tyner, Max Roach, Sun Ra, Lee Morgan, and Roy Ayers. Its name was included in the album title of Pharoah Sanders' "Live from the East."
There were two extensions of The East, one named The Mid-East located in Brownsville, Brooklyn managed by Yusef & Dara Iman and The Far-East managed by John Watusi Branch with Yusef & Kubballah Waliyaya in Queens and, until 1974, hosted jazz, drama, dance, and poetry, as well as evening classes and a Uhuru Sasa preschool. One major legacy of The East is its African Street Festival, now operating as an annual event in Bedford-Stuyvesant known as the International African Arts Festival.
In celebration of Kwanzaa, The Black Reality Think Tank radio broadcast will highlight this institution as an example of how the Nguzo Saba principles were successfully used in this Brooklyn, NY community during the late '60s through the '1980s. Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons at nearly 5 times the rate of white Americans. • Nationally, one in 81 Black adults per 100,000 in the U.S. is serving time in state prison. Wisconsin leads the nation in Black imprisonment rates; one of every 36 Black Wisconsinites is in prison. WHY?
According to the great Malcolm X, "Of all our studies, history is best qualified to reward our research. And when you see that you've got problems, all you have to do is examine the historic method used all over the world by others who have problems similar to yours."
The Black Reality Think Tank will explore WHY this situation plagues Wisconsin. Our guest is the first Black state senator for Wisconsin, Monroe Swan. Senator Swan served in the state senate from 1973 - 1981. What is it about Wisconsin's historical development that would lead to these horrible statistics? Black land loss in the United States refers to the loss of land ownership and rights by black people residing or farming in the United States. In 1862, the United States government passed the Homestead Act, which was intended to give land grants to individuals seeking land to farm. Black people were defrauded in this effort and lost tremendously most of the property acquired. Today the “land loss” continues.
The Black people were defrauded of their homes after the 2008 financial crisis. The tactics and home stealing continue today. Hosts, Dr. Janine James, Sister Dee Dee Conley, and the Sankofa Council of Milwaukee talk with Ms. Liz Johnson of the NAACP will reveal the forces that linked together this conspiratorial steal from us possible.
Is this practice one that is destined to return us to the plantation? Many parents believe they have no choice but to send their children to schools that promote the capitalists’ culture and values. However, our children must be engaged in an educational forum that helps them to analyze the world in general and African people's place in the world in particular. Although math, reading, geography, and science skills are to be reinforced, even that instruction must be reinforced through the study of African history and culture as well as current events that affect African people. This type of study is essential, especially since our youths are being educated more by capitalist mass media, including social media (that glorifies individualism, glamorizes violence and pushes uncommitted sex and other destructive behaviors) than by their own teachers and parents. If we don’t guide them to embrace their identity and history, to struggle for our people and against the negative forces that exploit and oppress us, their future is bleak.

Multiple states across the country are banning the teaching of critical race theory in schools, they say these theories distort historical events and are inconsistent with the state board standards. Black August is an acknowledgment and commemoration of the countless organizers, activists, and freedom fighters who sacrificed their freedom and lives in the struggle for Black liberation.
Black August takes place during the month of August and was started in California prisons in the 1970s by Black freedom fighters who wanted to honor the lives and deaths of Black political prisoners killed by the state, bring awareness to prison conditions, and honor the radical tradition of Black resistance against anti-Black state violence and systemic oppression.

Much of Walker's challenge to the conditions of The Colored Citizens of the World is rooted in their blindness caused by Christianity and misinformed Black Preachers. We have the expertise to evaluate the curriculum and provide an approach to treat behaviors that will limit the ability of our children to become productive, successful, and fulfilled.

Our children are living the best of times and the worst of times. There are greater opportunities for them to live their best lives. Despite efforts to increase the number of black physicians over the last 50 years, we are seeing a decline in the number of black physicians. The Cream City Medical Society of Milwaukee has continued its efforts to increase the number of blacks entering medicine by writing for a grant to achieve that goal.

Many White historians, social scientists, and scientific thinkers have studied and written about the cause and effect of white males who find it necessary to use violence and murder to reconcile their inner conflicts. Psychosis is defined as a condition that affects the way your brain processes information. It causes you to lose touch with reality. You might see, hear, or believe things that aren't real. Psychosis is a symptom, not an illness. A mental or physical illness, substance abuse, or extreme stress or trauma can initiate this behavior.
