In our culture, the Bible is often the subject of high doses of skepticism. It’s a book that claims to be the inspired Word of God to humanity…that’s a big claim! When you think about it, the entirety of what Christians believe is based on what is written in the Bible. It’s our ultimate authority, our ultimate truth, and our ultimate message from the Lord. Whenever we gage if something is trustworthy or not, it’s Scripture that we appeal to in order to determine if something is from God or not. But is it trustworthy? Do the copies of the Bible that we read today remain true to what was originally written? How can we even know the answer to that question? If the Bible is a collection of books written over 1500 years by so many different authors that we don’t even have the original copies of, how can we truly trust it? Honor is an interesting concept when you think about it. We have heard since we were little that we are to “honor your father and mother.” The word honor also brings to mind a courtroom with a judge and someone saying “yes, your honor.” But what does that word really mean? The importance of prayer in the life of the believer cannot be overstated. Again and again in the Bible we see accounts of people praying to the Lord and seeing amazing things happen. Through prayer, armies are defeated, the blind see, the lame walk, and the dead are brought back to life. Prayer is quite literally the way we talk to God and one of the ways that God speaks to us. At some point in everyone’s life, we have all struggled with being accepted or rejected. Maybe in elementary school you were picked last for dodgeball. Maybe in middle school you were made fun of. Maybe in high school you were left out of the group. Maybe as an adult you were pushed aside or dismissed as not important enough to consider. The truth is, no matter who you are or where you are from, rejection has at some point come to call on you. In God’s family, however, we are called to accept one another. Even so, people have still experienced a lack of acceptance from those in the church. That can be especially painful. Then there is the world around us. Our culture is constantly screaming “accept me the way I am!“, so is that what we are supposed to do? Blind acceptance no matter what? But how can we accept those who are living a lifestyle contrary to what the Bible says? The Bible makes it clear that acceptance is so important, but how do we practically and faithfully live out a one another lifestyle of accepting like Scripture calls us to in the world today? There is really nothing that everyone in the entire world can agree on, but the closest statement that might find universal acceptance is that life is tough. Did we hear an “amen” there through the screen? The burdens of life can be so difficult to deal with. Truthfully, for many, it seems like those burdens get tougher every day. We carry so many burdens in our lives like our finances, relationships, job concerns, marriage, health…the list goes on and on. But are these things meant to be burdens? And are we meant to carry them alone? Or does God have a better plan for us to help us when we face the burdens of this life? The truth is that God has given us His family as a way for us to bear one another’s burdens and to help each other in our times of need. But how do we access that? When it comes to the concept of love, there is no shortage of stories, songs, poems, movies, books, and more throughout all of human history that attempt to convey what it truly means to love someone. Even so, love, for some people, can be difficult to define. We know it when we experience it. We also know what it means to be unloved, to feel like we are isolated or alone or even hurt by those that we expected to feel love from. In Scripture, Jesus says that the world will know that we are followers of Him by the way that we love. Jesus is the perfect picture of true love, and we are called to be imitators of Him. So how do we do that? How do we, as imperfect people, love other imperfect people perfectly like Jesus did? Is that even possible? In scripture, Jesus tells His disciples that the world will know that they are followers of His by how they love. Obviously, the relationship that we have with one another as Christ-followers is important to the heart of God. But what about those that aren’t followers of Jesus? What about folks that aren’t like us? What about the people who seem to be in direct opposition to what we believe, that seem to seek to discredit our Savior and dismiss or even do harm to our faith? What does Jesus tell us to do in those situations? As you read through the Sermon on the Mount, you begin to see a theme emerging: Jesus changing the paradigms and established ideas of the day. For those in attendance on the mountain listening to the words of Christ, what Jesus was saying was absolutely a challenge to everything their culture had ingrained in them. These “counter cultural” thoughts drilled right through the letter of the law and got down to the heart of the matter…it’s what is happening on the inside that then shows up externally to show who we really are. Some of the things that Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount are hard to talk about. Like, really hard to talk about. Sexual purity can be one of those things. Jesus doesn’t pull any punches, however, and He is clear with us on the fact that God expects us to exhibit purity in all of our relationships. With phrases like “if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out” and “if you hand causes you to sin, cut it off”, we can clearly see that the subject of purity matters a great deal to the heart of God…but we live in a culture that so often celebrates the opposite. So what do we do as followers of Jesus? Have you ever been angry? Of course you have. The emotion of anger is something common to us all. Whether it’s a momentary flare up as someone cuts you off in traffic, a righteous anger when you see something that ought not be, or a bitter anger that seeps into your life and takes control, all of us have felt it at some point. So if all of us experience anger, then it must not be that big of a deal, right? But what if it is a big deal? What if our anger can lead us to a place where our lives have no peace and no joy? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the issue of anger and uses some pretty harsh language and imagery when talking about what it can do to our lives. In the life of every Christ-follower, there exists questions. Questions like: What is it that I truly believe? What makes up the foundation of my faith? What is God looking for me to do in my life? It’s considered by many to be the greatest sermon ever preached: the Sermon on the Mount. Found in Matthew Chapter 5, Jesus uses this sermon to kick-off His public ministry. The truth for us is the same as it was for those on the mount that day: that if we would apply the Beatitudes to our lives then we would see the kind spiritual growth that God desires for us. Over and over in scripture we see the theme that obedience to God is better than sacrifice. God is after our hearts, and as any parent can tell you, we demonstrate where our heart is based on our level of obedience. Almost nowhere in the Bible is this better illustrated than with the story of King Saul, the first King of Israel. The foundation to any relationship in the world is trust. When we think of Christmas, family is usually one of the first things that come into our minds. When you look at worship in the Old Testament, it always always involved sacrifice of some kind. Literally, the first time worship is mentioned in the Bible it is in the context of sacrifice. But it’s no longer the Old Testament era…when Jesus came, lived, died, and rose from the dead it became possible for us to have a personal relationship with God and be saved. Let your Bible fall open to the middle and you will be looking at the Book of Psalms. This collection of praise and worship located in the Old Testament is the longest book in the Bible, and is quoted more than 400 times in the New Testament. If you were asked the question “Who or what do you worship?” most of us reading this would answer “God” or “Jesus Christ” or “The Lord.” This is a Christian podcast after all and the majority of us would probably consider ourselves followers of Christ. The age-old saying rings true today - “Be careful the company that you keep.” Our friends are the ones who influence us, help shape us, and walk with us through the highs and lows of life. We have said several times in this series that you need your people. But how can we know if our people are pointing us towards Jesus or sending us the other way? In the Bible, we see an example of each of these extremes: the friends of Job and the friends of the Paralytic Man. So which friend group should we try to emulate? The Bible tells us that the best example we can see of Jesus’s relationship with the Church is marriage between a husband and wife. Paul writes in Colossians chapter 3 that the relationship calls for sacrificial love on the part of the husband, who represents Christ, and humble submission on the part of the wife, who represents the Church. The problem is that sacrifice and submission can seem like outdated ideas in this day and age. And raising kids to be obedient? It sounds impossible. So how do we stick to God’s family plan in a time where everything in our culture is telling us to go the opposite way? In the Old Testament, the Hebrews were given a list of rules to follow in order to be in “good standing” with God. Simply follow the rules, and everything is good, right? The only problem with that is that over and over again the Israelites failed to live up to their end of the bargain…and over and over again, there were consequences. When Jesus came, He gave us an entire new standard: the standard of grace and mercy. In fact, we were released from the rule of the law but at the same time, the new standard seems to hold us to an even higher way of living. So how do we reconcile all this?
