The Arctic is a critical crossroads for a number of geopolitical priorities today, including international security, climate change, and economic competition. Together with the recent changes to the U.S. position on Greenland in the Kingdom of Denmark, the Arctic is and will remain an important topic in international affairs in 2026 and beyond.
Global Minnesota hosted a webinar and discussion on February 25 with Jim DeHart, a former career member of the Senior Foreign Service and former U.S. Coordinator for the Arctic Region. He spoke with Global Minnesota Program Director Erin Hart about the challenges and opportunities of this pivotal region of the world.

Shaped by overlapping histories and evolving geopolitical dynamics, the Kashmir conflict remains one of the most longstanding territorial disputes in the world. From the legacy of the 1947 partition to ongoing tensions along the Line of Control, Kashmir is an enduring point of regional and international concern.
Following flare-ups in April and May of 2025, the international community is called to consider the factors that perpetuate this significant divide. Dr. Arijit Mazumdar joined Global Minnesota from the Department of Political Science at the University of St. Thomas to discuss the history and ongoing expectations surrounding Kashmir.

We work to raise Minnesota’s global profile, helping companies expand economic partnerships, strengthen cross-border relationships, and prepare for the future of international commerce.
At the state government level, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) works to empower the growth of the Minnesota economy. In November, this agency will be organizing an official trade mission for Minnesota to Germany and Switzerland.
On this episode, hear from the Commissioner of DEED, Matt Varilek, who has served in this role since 2023, and current Global Minnesota Senior Corporate Advisor Steve Riedel. Amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in Europe, Global Minnesota was honored to welcome Balázs Mártonffy, Consul General of Hungary in Chicago, for a public conversation at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. The event, moderated by Global Minnesota Program Director and former U.S. Foreign Service Officer Erin Hart, offered an in-depth exploration of Hungary’s evolving role in world affairs and its connections with Minnesota.
Earlier this month, Global Minnesota welcomed a delegation of emerging African leaders for a professional exchange focused on the economic impact of arts and culture. From exploring Lanesboro’s vibrant arts scene to engaging with cultural institutions in the Twin Cities, the group saw firsthand how creative industries can drive local revitalization.

Global Minnesota’s Great Decisions foreign policy discussion groups make international topics accessible to people all across the state. Anyone can join or start a group to begin discussing important global topics in your community.
One of this year’s Great Decisions topics is AI and National Security. Artificial Intelligence has the potential to change large sections of the global economy, social interactions, and geopolitical dynamics. On May 19, Global Minnesota will be hosting an in-depth discussion all about the intersection of AI and National Security with one of our newest Great Decisions Speakers, Ren Bin Lee Dixon. This episode is primer on the upcoming conversation with Ren Bin to help bring you up to speed on all things AI.
She is an Artificial Intelligence policy researcher with a Master’s in Public Policy, specializing in AI governance, from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. As a Research Fellow at the Center for AI and Digital Policy, she provided policy recommendations to governments and multilateral organizations, shaping frameworks for responsible AI governance. Ren Bin also collaborates with the Center for Security and Emerging Technology on policy briefs addressing AI harm.

Global Minnesota’s Classroom Connection program inspires our littlest learners with fun and interactive lessons about a country’s culture, language, and daily life. International volunteers from all over the world go to elementary and middle school classrooms to spark global curiosity about people from other countries. Global Minnesota recently expanded this program to Mankato, Minnesota, further increasing our reach across the state.
On this episode, we are joined by Angie Davis, a kindergarten teacher with Washington Elementary School in Mankato, Nowrin Koly, a Classroom Connection volunteer from Bangladesh, and Madeline Wildeson, Assistant Director for Retention at the Kearney International Center at MSU Mankato. As part of Global Minnesota’s K-12 Education Programs, Academic WorldQuest engages the next generation of global leaders, preparing them to thrive in and actively shape their globally connected future. Students are challenged to think about the global and local implications of international events by answering a series of multiple choice questions on a variety of foreign affairs topics. They are inspired to continue applying this knowledge and passion as they go forward in the world. Global Minnesota held the statewide Academic WorldQuest competition this past March at the Mall of America, where the team from Mounds View High School won the championship.

In 2022, Global Minnesota was delighted to host Fellows from the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) to Minnesota as part of our Professional Exchanges Program. The YLAI program gathers emerging leaders from all across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada to advance their entrepreneurial ideas and effectively contribute to social and economic development in their communities.
One such visitor was Luis Villaherrera, who is fighting for democracy and human rights in El Salvador. In 2017, he co-founded TRACODA, which stands for transparency, social control, and open data, to create innovative projects that focus on technological tools to combat corruption and foster democracy. After the government banned his platform, he founded The Center for Democratic Strengthening. As part of this incredible work, he recently won a prestigious Obama Foundation Scholars award and hopes to use the program help build grassroots movements, deliver messages to a broader audience, and push for accountability in government throughout Central America and beyond. He joined the podcast to talk about his Minnesota experience with the YLAI program, his recent Obama Scholars award, and the important work he is doing to advance government accountability in Central America.

As Ukraine approaches the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion, increasing attention is turning towards long-term strategies for the country’s security, recovery, and rebuilding. Ukraine has begun accession negotiations with the European Union and a NATO Summit in 2024 will likely discuss Ukraine's future in this strategic alliance.
Global Minnesota hosted a timely discussion of Ukraine's postwar outlook with two distinguished guests joining virtually: Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Chairman of the Kyiv Security Forum and former Prime Minister of Ukraine and Oleksandra Matviichuk, Head of the Center for Civic Liberties and 2022 Nobel Prize Laureate. After their keynotes, the conversation continued with a panel of local human rights and Ukrainian experts.

Our first ever Global Business Outlook explored the global business megatrends that can pose risks—or lead to growth opportunities for Minnesota companies. Classroom Connection is part of Global Minnesota’s K-12 Education programs and brings the world to classrooms all over Minnesota. International visitors, many of whom are students at local universities, teach sessions on their country’s culture and language in a fun and interactive format that sparks the curiosity of our youngest learners. These lessons are unique to each class and can be conducted either virtually or in-person. While the State Department's footprint has grown from 41 diplomatic posts throughout the world in 1900 to more than 270 missions today, the need to increase the ability to hire and retain the highest quality individuals continues. In a dynamic and significantly connected world, what does our nation need from those representing us on the diplomatic front? How can the diplomatic corps be prepared for future opportunities and unexpected disruptions? On October 30, 2023, Global Minnesota hosted a conversation with Ambassador and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Ronald Neumann about his recommendations to modernize America's diplomacy. In this event recording, Ambassador Neumann shared his personal insights and provide a behind-the-scenes look at diplomacy from his long career representing the United States.
In 1960, Cyprus became independent from the United Kingdom, but its early years were marked by violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The United Nations established a buffer zone in 1964 to diffuse rising tensions. Ten years later, after a Greece-sponsored coup in Cyprus, Turkey sent thousands of troops to the island, citing its right as a guarantor power to do so. Nearly 200,000 Greek Cypriots living in the northern part of the island were forced or fled to the south; 60,000 Turkish Cypriots living in the south did the same to the north. The island and the capital city of Nicosia have been divided since then, despite international attempts to reunify Cyprus. U.N. troops remain to protect the peace, but periodic flare-ups of violence have occurred as recently as August 2023. Hear a conversation with former U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus, Kathleen Doherty.

In October, some of Global Minnesota’s staff will be participating in the International Strategic Crisis Negotiation Exercise (also known as ISCNE) at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. This is a diplomacy simulation designed to help college students learn about the negotiation process. To help the students prepare and to bring the discussion of critical issues to all Minnesotans, Global Minnesota will host two free public events featuring former U.S. Ambassadors. The first will include former Ambassador to Cyprus, Kathleen Doherty, on October 19, while the second will feature former Ambassador and Deputy Assistance Secretary of State Ron Neumann on October 30.

Is using military force a viable foreign policy option for 2021 and beyond?
The Persian Gulf remains tense as the rivalry between the regional powers of Saudi Arabia and Iran continues. Tensions escalated in early 2020 as the United States began to intervene in the Gulf, launching an airstrike that killed two Iranian military commanders. What are the historical influences that have led to these tensions? What role, if any, should the United States play?
The world is changing, and so is NATO, the transatlantic alliance. The NATO 2030 initiative is intended to ensure the alliance of nations remains ready to face tomorrow’s challenges. The next Summit of the allied leaders will take place on June 14 at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. At this meeting NATO leaders will make decisions on the substantive and forward-looking NATO 2030 agenda to deal with the expected challenges of Russia’s aggressive actions, the threat of terrorism, cyber attacks, emerging and disruptive technologies, the security impact of climate challenges, and the rise of China.

During World War I, many people in Europe faced starvation due to the German occupation and British blockade. In response, the Commission for Relief in Belgium was created to help feed children and mothers in Belgium and northern France. More than half of the food aid that went to Europe was wheat and wheat flour, much of it coming from the farmers and flour mills of Minnesota. This hunger relief effort grew to become the largest humanitarian effort in history, feeding more than 150 million Europeans from France to Russia between 1914 and 1923.
In return, children from Belgium sent letters of gratitude to American children. A selection of these letters has been translated and used to create a powerful exhibit that has been shown across the United States.

About the Speakers Peg Thomas is the Executive Director at the Sundance Family Foundation and manages the Foundation’s operations and initiatives, provides strategic program guidance to the board, mentors Sundance college interns, and provides both grants management and technical support to grantees. Peg holds an MPA from Harvard Kennedy School, an MS in Therapeutic Recreation and Administration from the University of Minnesota, an MPP in Business from the Carlson School of Business, and a BS in Music Therapy also from University of Minnesota.
Tim Roman is the Co-Founder and CEO of Ecotone Analytics GBC. Tim has an MBA from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, where he studied integrative leadership and stakeholder collaboration for social and environmental impact. He has consulting experience in business modeling, organizational design, and process improvement for social enterprise, as well as 12 years of experience in IT, from coding to department management.
It is often said that foreign policy is about connecting means with ends. With perhaps a few exceptions, most agree that the ultimate end of U.S. foreign policy should be a more prosperous, sustainable, and secure world. Yet today, food security around the globe remains a pressing challenge, especially in low-income, conflict-prone, and climate-affected areas.
Following decades of decline in hunger, the number of hungry people globally is once again rising – this trend made all the worse by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Patching up vulnerabilities in food systems remains paramount in ending hunger around the world and such trends pose challenges – some new, some old – to U.S. foreign policy.

John Caulker, Founder and Executive Director of Fambul Tok, a peace-building NGO based in Sierra Leone, believes that true healing and reconciliation can only take place through a community-led process. Documentary filmmaker Sara Terrytells this amazing story in her award-winning film, Fambul Tok, where victims and perpetrators of Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war come together for the first time in an unprecedented program of tradition-based truth-telling and forgiveness ceremonies.
Through reviving their ancient practice of fambul tok (family talk), Sierra Leoneans are building sustainable peace at the grass-roots level. Filled with lessons for the West, the film explores the depths of a culture that believes true justice lies in redemption and healing for individuals and that forgiveness is the surest path to restoring dignity and building strong communities.
Join us for an inspiring discussion with John Caulker and Sara Terry on how Sierra Leone is advancing peace by mobilizing ordinary people in the hard work of reconciliation. The program will also feature special guest the First Lady of Sierra Leone Her Excellency Fatima Maada Bio.
John Caulker is the Founder and Executive Director of Fambul Tok and has led the implementation of the Fambul Tok program since its inception in 2007. John became a human rights activist as a student leader during the initial years of the war in Sierra Leone. Risking his life to document wartime atrocities, he infiltrated rebel camps disguised as a rebel to gather information and stories to pass along to international organizations such as Amnesty International, Article 19, and Human Rights Watch. He founded Forum of Conscience as a human rights NGO in Sierra Leone in 1996. As Executive Director of Forum of Conscience, John strove to prevent recurring violence by connecting the root causes of Sierra Leone’s brutal conflict to the need for rural community participation in the national decision making process and acknowledgement of wrong doing to victims through the reparations program. As the national chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Working Group, John pressured the government of Sierra Leone to implement the recommendations of the TRC’s 2004 report.
Sara Terry is the Producer/Director of Fambul Tok, her first feature-length documentary. A former award-winning reporter for the Christian Science Monitor, Sara made a mid-career transition into photojournalism and documentary photography in the late 1990s. The focus of her work since has been post-conflict societies. Her long-term project about the aftermath of war in Bosnia — “Aftermath: Bosnia’s Long Road to Peace” — was published in September 2005 by Channel Photographics, and chosen as one of the best books of the year by Photo District News. Her work has been widely published and exhibited at such venues as the United Nations, Moving Walls/Open Society, the Museum of Photography in Antwerp, and the Leica Gallery in Solms, Germany. She is the founder of The Aftermath Project, a nonprofit grant program helping photographers cover the aftermath of conflict and building educational outreach and partnerships around the understanding that “war is only half the story.”

He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and served as director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington, D.C. A member of Global Minnesota’s Great Decisions advisory committee, Tom speaks frequently on international issues and contributes to local and international media. He is also a board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights, the International Leadership Program at the University of St. Thomas, and the Cultural Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. Tom holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and graduate degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; the Institute of Advanced International Studies in Switzerland; and the National School of Administration in France.

According to the UNHCR (the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), there are more than 68.5 million people today who have been forcibly displaced from their homes by conflict. Some of these people have been displaced within their own countries and others have been forced to flee to other countries. Many hope to be able to return home as soon as possible, but the average length of displacement is between 20 and 30 years and some will never return to their country of origin. Despite the challenges, millions of refugees and displaced people work hard to overcome struggles, preserve their culture and identity, and rebuild their lives, often in new places.

Cyber conflict is a new and continually developing threat, which can include foreign interference in elections, industrial sabotage, and attacks on infrastructure. Russia has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States, and China is highly committed to using cyberspace as a tool of national policy. Dealing with cyber conflict will require new ways of looking at 21st-century warfare.

In 1994 over the span of 100 days, nearly a million Tutsi were killed in Rwanda. After finding personal healing and forgiveness, author Denise Uwimana turned her extraordinary experience as a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide into a personal mission to provide material and spiritual assistance to fellow survivors. To mark the 25th commemoration of the genocide, Denise recently released the moving memoir "From Red Earth: A Rwandan Story of Healing and Forgiveness," where she recounts her story of survival and continuing efforts to restore her country by empowering Rwandans to band together, find healing, share their stories, and rebuild their lives.
