From the swingin’ 60s through the rockin’ 90s to Spectacular, Ultimate, and beyond, we’ll explore everything weird and wonderful about our favorite Webhead, alongside occasional detours into the games, movies, and (of course) comics that shape our favorite webslinger’s multimedia landscape. We’re revisiting Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man again, this time in-depth and with full spoilers! And boy does this first episode and its strange Spidey origin play differently when you know where the season ends. We get into the show’s origins as an MCU tie-in and how being freed of those restraints leads to a truly special Spider-Man series, with a fun friendship between Peter Parker and Nico Minoru, an exploration of racial prejudice and privilege through Lonnie Lincoln, Spidey wearing a hockey jersey, and classic comics-inspired designs.

The final arc of the season begins in 2017’s Spider-Man, and it involves a whole army of tech-based Goblins, the Spider-Girls on their own investigation with Peter Parker as their prime suspect, and FINALLY the return of our favorite Harry Osborn! Was his prolonged absence worth it? We continue to be broken records about the disastrous misuse of Miles Morales, Max Modell being an absolute dick despite still being hot, and Peter continuing to be awful about not communicating with his friends.

Black Cat has joined the Secret Wars! But what begins as a clever subversion and interrogation of her role as Spidey’s crutch and comfort blanket quickly disintegrates into an episode where Cat has to be rescued a record number of times, the heroes mostly just walk across nondescript canyons that feel pulled out of the 60s show, Spidey does not actually succeed as a leader, and the weird pattern of only allowing one woman superhero on screen at a time continues.

We knew we’d have mixed feelings about a follow-up to our favorite standalone episode (season 2’s “Hydro-Man” is still a masterpiece, y’all). But the beginning of this traumatic two-parter still delivers plenty of decent moments, even while it treads water – with Mary Jane using her wits to fight back against her abuser, Black Cat’s return (kind of), Peter tearing down both Anna Watson and Hydro-Man himself, and a big homage to The Terminator.

A god-like Electro is the Big Bad of The Six Forgotten Warriors saga, and shockingly, it all lands with a thud. We lose our minds a little bit at all the baffling decisions of this episode, including a wet fart of a swan song for Kingpin, the infuriatingly unnecessary exit of Silver Sable, Mary Jane throwing herself into danger just to give Spider-Man man-pain, a weird Captain America sacrifice, and a downright nonsensical ending. It’s one of the show’s worst!

We’re going back to the beginning in more ways than one, as the second season of the original 1967 Spider-Man cartoon reboots itself! With a brand new animation studio headed by prolific counterculture icon Ralph Bakshi (pre-Fritz the Cat and Lord of the Rings), the new season starts off with a faithful retelling of Spidey’s origin, complete with psychedelic sequences, watercolor backgrounds, and plenty of cost-cutting.

Did you know we almost got a mini-Spectacular Spider-Man reunion in 2012? We’re covering the infamous episode of the critically-acclaimed Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes series… the one where Josh Keaton’s big Spider-Man appearance was re-recorded by Drake Bell for frustrating reasons. Our amazing friends have joined us for this three-episode season of Amazing Friends origin stories! Dr. Christopher Roman, author of Queering Wolverine in Comics and Fan Fiction: A Fastball Special, brings his background as a professor specializing in comics studies and queer theory to analyze this depiction of one of the gayest X-Men – Iceman! And while there’s plenty of queerness to pull from Bobby’s coming out story (told through a futuristic mind probe…for some reason) it’s also split with a Videoman return that doesn’t quite give Iceman his due.

We’re celebrating 200 episodes with the very first live-action Spider-Man film – the pilot movie for 1977’s The Amazing Spider-Man series! It’s a strange mixed bag, which includes a good performance by Nicholas Hammond as Peter Parker, a divisive J. Jonah Jameson, a weird lack of Uncle Ben (and conflict for Peter), a shockingly dark premise from an otherwise boring villain, and some ambitious stunts and effects.

Spider-Man’s first ever appearance in live action might not be where you’d expect! We’ve ventured back to the 1970s with the educational children’s sketch comedy show The Electric Company and its “Spidey Super Stories” segments, which pit a silent Spidey who only communicates with word balloons against puntastic comedy villains (including a Dracula played by Morgan Freeman and a cake-sitting Yeti). It’s low-budget silliness and absurdity at its finest!

The beginning of this epic five-parter gives us not one, but two new Spider-folks! Spider-Gwen makes her unexpected arrival alongside the mysterious Stealth Spider, and they all have to contend with Harry Osborn’s flame sword, loads of technobabble, and a climax that weirdly foreshadows No Way Home.
The Doc Ock saga concludes with, surprisingly, the biggest Osborn-centric episode so far – with major progression in Harry and Peter’s degrading friendship, the Norman/Jackal war coming to a head, the formation a Sinister…uh…Five, and oh yeah I guess Otto is kinda there too?
Despite the title, this is an episode very confusingly not about Otto. Though the 2017 series has a drastically different Otto from what we’re used to, his origin is surprisingly familiar... until its turn to a maybe-sorta-kinda hero story for Doc Ock sets it apart. MTV’s Spider-Man ends with a finale that perfectly encapsulates all the worst parts of this series: messy, violent, nihilistic, poorly-written, and bad to its women.
The two-part finale of MTV’s Spider-Man begins with a mind-bendy fantasy featuring two villains named Sergei (one played by Spike and the other played by Worf), another villain played by Kathy Griffin (!!!), and quite possibly the creepiest Stan Lee cameo.
Electro’s back, and in a clever bit of continuity, he’s after Sally – the previously unnamed girl that smiled at him literally one time. And despite some of this show’s usual writing weaknesses and odd choices, there’s plenty to keep us pretty electrified.
Peter and his friends get entangled in Silver Sable’s assassination plot, which sticks Spidey into a political spy thriller and proves to be more complicated than anyone thought. Despite the clunky not-quite-a-pun title, this one’s pretty good!
Flash Thompson gets a brain upgrade from the Re-Animator in a cartoonishly fun episode that feels pulled out of 80s Saturday morning cartoon fare! We discuss this show’s weird identity, Devon Sawa's teen heartthrob origins, why Peter and Indy make such a good pairing, and more.
We’ve finally made it to the original pilot (and, coincidentally, the first aired episode) of MTV’s Spider-Man, which reinvents Electro as a victim of hazing – kind of, considering this episode doesn’t seem to know how college Greek life works!
Spider-Man has a stalker in an episode that, unfortunately, does not age well in its mishandling of mental health. But it’s a surprisingly fun and well-written episode (from an interesting Buffy writer, no less), including a Harley Quinn-esque performance from Tara Strong as essentially this show’s version of Tinkerer!
Spidey has to stop a hostage situation, but how can he do it when Peter Parker is a hostage too?! James Marsters leads a villain team with a weird name, Peter meets a refreshing and fun new love interest named Indy, and MJ continues to think of nothing but pining after Peter in another episode of MTV’s Spider-Man!
The secret’s out – we REALLY like this one! Eve guests as Black Cat (call her “Talon” as much as you want, but she’s definitely Black Cat) in a character-centric episode exploring Harry’s depression, a relatable struggle for Peter, and relationship drama that this show can pull off.
This is the one that’s basically a Kraven episode, except Kraven is replaced with a lecherous movie producer and a mystical sword lady who literally decapitates a guy. It’s…definitely edgy!
The Lizard brings in a spark of fun horror, stylistic setpieces, and genuine artistry to MTV’s Spider-Man series, but it also gives us a wildly unlikeable Curt Connors (voiced by Rob Zombie!), frustrating dialogue and story beats, and a very, very unintentionally funny death scene.
