First-year MDiv student Cecie Suknaic shared a testimony about her grandmother during worship in the Augustana Chapel at LSTC on November 14. The recording begins a few seconds into her testimony, as Cecie describes looking through family photo albums after her grandmother’s death in December 2018.
Alumnus Vance Blackfox (2012, MATS), a citizen of the Cherokee Nation who currently serves as director of communications for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS), preached during worship in the Augustana Chapel on November 13, as part of the Vine Deloria Jr. Symposium held at LSTC that day. The symposium included a presentation by Prairie Rose Seminole and a panel discuss and reception in honor of the late Rev. Dr. Gordon Straw.
On November 11, LSTC held an Interfaith Service of Remembrance and Commitment in Observance of Kristallnacht, November 9-10, 1938, when a systemic violent attack on Jewish people, property and places of worship happened throughout the Third Reich. Mrs. Ruth Ultmann shared her testimony of witnessing this attack as a child in Germany. She was evacuated to England a few months afterwards, leaving behind the only family she knew and whom she never saw again. As an adult, she immigrated to the U.S. and moved to Chicago in the 1960s.

Bishop Munib Younan was the preacher for the Second Service in Lent at LSTC on Feb. 26. He preached on Mark 8:31-38. Bishop Younan is Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. He is a high-profile lecturer and preacher who is sought after for his perspective on just peace as a Palestinian Christian which are found further in his two books, Witnessing for Peace: In Jerusalem and the World and The Augsburg Confession in Arabic. Bishop Younan helped bring Mutual Recognition Agreement between Middle East Evangelical Churches in 2006 for full communion between churches of the Reformed and Lutheran traditions. He is also active in interreligious encounter, ecumenism and reconciliation in his own region and internationally. Bishop Younan’s works have been recognized by a number of awards and prizes.

Dr. Karriem Watson was the preacher for the first worship service of LSTC’s spring semester on Feb. 5. He preached on Mark 1:29-39 and Jeremiah 29:1-14. Dr. Watson is Director of Community Engagement in Clinical Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he is a faculty member at the UIC School of Public Health in the Division of Community Health Services. He is an adjunct faculty member at DePaul and Northwestern Universities in Chicago. His work in public health has resulted in the creation of community-based cancer screening, prevention and navigation programs for breast, lung, colorectal, cervical and prostate cancer. In addition to engaging in cancer disparities research, he is part of the administrative leadership of the new Center for Health Equity Research (CHER Chicago), to address structural violence.

Becoming Human: Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Theological Confrontation with White Supremacy

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran pastor, theologian, and political activist in Germany, during one of the world's most infamous political regimes. The context of his min-istry included interaction with nostalgia for national greatness in post-WWI Germany. German Nazism was in its nascent stages and most non-Jewish Germans did not see it as dangerous. Yet, after spending a year as a student in Harlem, New York, attending a black Baptist church, and studying the writers of the Harlem Renaissance, Bon-hoeffer saw racism as a Christian problem. Upon his return to Germany, Bonhoeffer recognized that white racist Christians there had turned Jesus into a representation of ideal humanity, which is historically catastrophic, dis-torting humanity in all aspects of human social interac-tion. Rather than the idealized humanity of white su-premacy, Bonhoeffer advocated that we see ourselves and others in the concrete reality, enabling us to love and live in real community, with real human beings. In a number of mainline churches in North America the relationship between Font and Table is currently being debated. In this ecumenical theological conversation panelists will address various themes and questions on baptism and eucharist. Some topics to be included are, the relationship between confession of faith and eucharist throughout the history of the church, how current pastoral practice might best invite to the table in our postmodern context, and the ecumenical implications of open communion from Lutheran, Methodist, and Presbyterian perspectives.
