Welcome Back! I have a longer than normal solo episode today as there is quite a bit to talk about this week. Of course, Black Myth Wukong has gained an incredible amount of sales and inversely Concord launched to an absolute disaster. Plenty to piece out in the aftermath of both launches alongside the save corruption drama of Star Wars Outlaws. Outside of new game releases we have to discuss the new partnership between Remedy and Annapurna in making new films and/or tv shows. Plenty of rumors to discuss this week as the PS5 Pro has been fully leaked in terms of the official name and its design. In the actual show we take the time to actually hash out the situation at Bungie as reported by Bloomberg. Concord’s disastrous release, and the strange announcement of Indiana Jones. A PlayStation State of Play has come and gone so we have a little update from Sony to talk about. Fourteen games were shown and were given the PlayStation limelight. For a State of Play it was quite good however, as you will see in the show, I disagree heavily with how Concord was shown and "pitched" to us. Let me know if you agree or disagree below. We have a more active week in gaming news than expected as The Final Shape, Destiny 2's latest expansion, was leaked by Sony through an interesting workaround via Sony's cloud servers. This lead to a lot of the details of the expansion to be out there and if you believe some you had enough time to fully play the campaign so beware of spoilers. Other than this Sony actually shot themselves in the foot in another way but we will cover that in the show. Other than that the news was somewhat light as the State of Play, as of recording this, was due very soon so expect the video breaking that down to be live.
Well here we are as this week has changed from a noneventful week as it has been for awhile now to something feels like it has fundamentally changed in the Xbox ecosystem specifically to the fan and economic side. Since something so interesting happened I took the chance to grab Emmett Watkins Jr. on the show to give his thoughts on Xbox both closing four studios one being a seemingly successful studio in Tango Gameworks and how Game Pass seems to have changed its entire structure to an almost Activision like house of cards. A quick impressions video about my playtime in Stellar Blade. I am still early in but I feel like something is special about this game. Now to be clear, this is no Lies of P where a game comes out of nowhere and takes us all of guard but this game feels very fun and I think there is something here for a lot of people even though on the surface it seems very much geared to a specific subset of people. 2024 is almost halfway through and we are inching closer to nearly 10,000 lost jobs this year alone. It seems we are at a troubling time in the industry as on the surface Gaming is making more money than ever before and is ahead of all of its competitors in terms of money earned. However, ballooning budgets, economic effects, and much more factors are hurting the industry in its most important and weakest section, money. Combine all these factors are I believe gaming's future is uncertain. We know from much smarter people than I that gaming is not growing which is causing the big competitors to get creative on how they will increase their margins. That is what I want to discuss today, not to find a solution to this but to start a conversation on the how and why and what in the future may change. Stellar Blade is out and reviews are pretty good but it seems the narrative is rather weak. Eiyuden Chronicles is out too. No Rest for the Wicked and Hades 2 are getting some early testing via early access for No Rest and a tech test for Hades 2 which will be quickly followed by early access for the game. Fallout as a franchise is gaining more popularity due to the show's success. And much more to discuss but if I may divert from the description a bit it feels so quiet out there I wonder if we are due for a major news story soon or not. Well we have some catching up to do so let's get into it. Dragon’s Dogma 2 has taken over the gaming sphere and I want to give my thoughts on my pretty deep experience with the game. Unfortunately there will be no Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC and that breaks my heart. Some new looks at Marvel 1943 and Dragon Ball Sparking Zero. Apple is being sued to break up their Apple Market. Assassin’s Creed Jade has been delayed a year although I am not sure if anyone even cares. Toys for Bob has been let go with an agreement with Microsoft. A small look at the all digital Xbox Series X. And for the main show let's talk about Gearbox breaking out of Embracer and Connie Booth has found a new working spot at EA. Well that just happened cue audience laughter, forgive me as it has been a rather tense week as we will be discussing the Sweet Baby inc. Steam Page situation as many are dupping this event as if it's a sequel to a movie from a certain well known vastly overrated “culture” collision that happened prior so it is important to take the necessary time to talk about this. Now as this I am sure is sensitive to many out there I ask you enter this with an open mind and try to check your assumptions at the door so we can try and talk kindly and thoughtful about this. EA games canceled the long reported Star Wars FPS game coming from Respawn. Some light rumors this week but nothing too insane. As for the main show, Rooster Teeth has shuttered as Warner Bros. shut down the 21 year studio after many years of not running profits. Hiroki Totoki, interim Head of PlayStation, has some straightforward and clear messaging about what he thinks about the PlayStation division. We were blessed with a State of Play and, well, we do not know Sony's 2024 anymore than we did before BUT we got a look at more of their partners filling in the unknown of this year with Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin. We got some compelling software shown for their seemingly soft sold PSVR2 in Legendary Tales and Metro Awakening. But if you ask me friend my game of the show is nearly tied but is given slightly to Judas, Ken Levine's return to games in a very long time. A close second being Death Stranding 2 a fascinating game that I frankly barely understand and that makes me so excited. Well, I had quite a surprising guest this week. Nick Calandra has had an insane 48 hours. As you have no doubt heard by now, Nick Calandra was the Editor in Chief at The Escapist and was fired on 11/6 by the parent company of The Escapist, Gamurs. Almost instantly after this firing, nearly the entire team at The Escapist either was fired or resigned shortly after. Upon that, Nick immediately put his “misfortune” into high gear and launched Second Wind, a continuation of the video team at The Escapist, now free from the corporate shackles that Gamur had on them. Spider-Man 2 has been released, and I did something incredibly rare for me: I completed the game in about three days. "Lies of P" has taken me and my co-host (Alex) by quite a surprise, as it's one of the rare games that has captured all of my attention and made me fall in love with it quite quickly. This title, developed by Round8 Studios, has gone above and beyond in showing me that an unknown studio can come out of nowhere and deliver an incredible game in a year filled with hit titles. It's been a light news week, as everyone has avoided Starfield announcements like the plague. However, we do have some things to discuss. The Suikoden remaster has been delayed, an Xbox Head of Japan has been appointed, and Indiana Jones is set to have an actual reveal next year. The Rumor Roundup is light, but we have some sources in the gaming rumor space saying Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in development – not surprising, of course. The gaming industry, particularly the Xbox side, has found itself in somewhat of a frenzy when discussing the viability of the Series S. The question at hand is whether it should continue to receive updates with the same games as the Series X. In case you're not aware, it's a requirement to release your game on both the Series S and Series X when launching on the Xbox platform. Over the years, some developers have expressed concerns and issues with this policy, especially as we move further away from the initial launch of these devices.
With the launch of Baldur's Gate 3, it was initially excluded from the Xbox platform until the Phil Spencer meeting at Gamescom. This situation has raised many questions about whether it's worthwhile to maintain this policy, as it could potentially deter significant publishers and developers from releasing their games on the platform.

The Final Shape was detailed in Bungie's latest deepdive in their last expansion in the Light and Darkness saga giving an overview on new systems to expect, new exotics, new supers, the new world of "The Pale Heart" that is inside the traveler and more.
It's been quite a slow news week, but as everyone knows, that doesn't stop me from talking. This week, we have some news: Nintendo will finally be releasing a new console next year. This news has sparked a debate about whether there will be backwards compatibility for the new console and if Nintendo will carry over existing purchases to the new system.
One of my favorite parts of sitting down with you every week is randomly finding a nugget of news to go on, which leads to what I believe is a great tangent that initiates a compelling thought/discussion. This discovery was made this week with the Xbox Series X rumor suggesting that there will be a discless version of the system to potentially reduce both the size and cost of the system. Will this setup allow Microsoft to introduce a mid-gen refresh with a potentially new system? Or will Phil Spencer's words that the Series X is that mid-gen system and there won't be another one come true? Xbox's purchase of Activision Blizzard will be finalized in the coming weeks, if not days, and we will see the beginning of a massive change in Xbox and the industry. We may find ourselves in a decade with a completely different economic landscape that, in hindsight, we could have seen coming but aren't there yet. So let's discuss together what can change for the brand, Game Pass, the industry at large, and much more as I (Elijah) take a deep dive with you, navigating what I think are some inevitable changes coming in the short, mid, and long term for everyone involved in this deal. Although Xbox is the main focus of this discussion, I hope to have more people on in the future to delve deeper into other companies that will see the ramifications of this deal. Wow, we have quite a week to go over. It has been completely inundated by the FTC hearing regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. There is an abundance of information to delve into, including new revelations about the production costs of two major gaming intellectual properties from Sony, as well as the substantial revenue generated for Sony by the Call of Duty franchise. Notably, an eye-opening email from Pete Hines potentially sheds light on Xbox's relationship with Bethesda. Several individuals have taken the stand under oath to discuss the intricate workings of the industry. Perhaps the most intriguing testimony to anticipate is that of Bobby Kotick, who will provide insights into his perspectives on the possibility of bringing Call of Duty to the Switch and the reasons behind its absence thus far. He will also express his aversion to Game Pass and elaborate on why he would never consider placing a Call of Duty title on a subscription service, among other compelling topics that cannot be fully expounded upon in this limited timeframe. We had an interesting week filled with a variety of random news stories and discussions that kept us all busy. One topic that's still causing a lot of debate is Starfield and its target frame rate of 30 fps. People have been going back and forth on that one. There's also been talk about games taking longer to develop than ever before. We got some insight into the work of different developers, like the former Sony Santa Monica employees revealing that Sony expects a 90 Metacritic score for their games. And did you know that Titanfall 3 was in development for almost a year? We also heard from Cory Barlog, who shared his thoughts on why games are taking so long nowadays.
But that's not all! We still have two showcases left to cover, so check out my breakdowns of each. However, the biggest story of the week has been the downsizing of Embracer Group, which has sparked a lot of discussion.

However, the timing and fate dictated that the huge failure that is Redfall came out 24 hours prior and forced a completely different conversation to occur. Well, Redfall has seen quite the news but not in a good way as they have announced there will be no 60fps option at launch leaving many that were anticipating the title incredibly saddened and underwhelmed at the first Bethesda game to launch under Xbox's umbrella of studios. So let us discuss this decision why it may have happened and why it could lead to more studios making this exact decision. E3 means so much too many. Some positively, some negatively but everyone has thought about gaming's former megacenter of gaming news and tech insight. As of writing this, it seems E3 may be silently thinning out of relevancy but how did we get here? How did E3 even become the gaming mecca that we all knew it was? What triggered its downfall? A new installment in the PS5 console space maybe coming soon according to Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson. Once I read this rumor nothing surprised at first glance as we heard about this previously on the Sacred Symbols Podcast and was reported here. But Tom goes on to mention specifics like an expected window of late 2024 which gave me pause but once thought about it aligns fairly well with last console cycle behavior. The most recent contest mode for the newly released Root of Nightmares raid in Destiny 2 caused quite a stir in the Destiny community, to say the least so I wanted to give the perspective of someone who has always enjoyed Destiny but has never been able to give the "Day One" contest mode a try. This most recent attempt seems to have been a perfect storm for my newly formed team to get our first contest mode completion. Now, why was this the case? Well, let's discuss the various encounters, the mechanics (or lack thereof), the difficulty, and much more. Thanks to a friend I met through Destiny iDoentNo for the footage of our raid clear. As of posting, Lance Reddick, the voice of Zavala and seasoned actor has passed away. As someone who always smiled when I heard the voice or saw him pop up in a show/movie, I am devasted to hear that he has passed. Hogwarts Legacy is a game we can finally move on from as both the attempts to bully others into not playing it and the actual boycott itself seem to fail overwhelmingly. I for one am happy we can stop talking about this particular subject and move on to things that are far more important in our industry. Of course, this is not to diminish anyone's thoughts or feelings on this matter it's just we have much greater problems in our industry that need addressing. Now on that note, the composer of Atomic Heart donated his fee to the red cross so we discuss if Atomic Heart may be the next game to receive the ire of the games industry. The PSVR2 review embargo is up and it seems to not be particularly exciting to many. New rumors of new headsets for PS5 coming our way. Game Pass is shockingly not selling more games when games are being added to game pass. That particular story was surprising to hear so many people surprised by that. Mario Piacquadio from Spoonful joins me today as he aids in my endeavor to deliver the news every week with someone with an incredible eye and perspective in the games industry. We had quite a week to talk about mainly of course the recent interview with Herman Hulst via Axios gave us a look at the future multiplayer and games as a service PlayStation will look like. That is a large portion of the show as we dissect the multiple meanings some of his statements gave and we needed to discuss the heavily rumored Horizon Zero Dawn remake we could be getting soon that will feature a multiplayer component to the game. Emmett Watkins Jr graces us at the perfect timing as we are discussing the announced cancellation of Google’s game streaming platform, Stadia. Although it didn’t take an industry soothsayer to foretell this I do think most people thought it would make it past 5 years. That is not all as promised last week in the description, we missed a news story on Shawn Layden joining Tencent as a Strategic Advisor, incredibly sad to see a smart man sell out in such style. Then in incredibly disheartening news the Savvy Games Fund, Saudi Arabia’s investment group had tens of billions of dollars ready to encourage new Saudi studios and to acquire more studios around the world. Mohammed Bin Salmad is troubling and has a shady background to put it incredibly lightly. Make sure to check out that portion of the episode for sure. Well you can now say you were around when one of the biggest leaks in gaming history happened. We have Emmett Watkins Jr. with us today to discuss multiple noteworthy news items, of course arguably the biggest news item this week was the Suikoden 1+2 remaster being announced (lol). Of course there is plenty to announce but we go over some first impressions coming out for Mario and rabbids as well as some Scorn gameplay look. Some confirmation on some rumored games like the Iron Man game coming soon and EA hinting at further Marvel titles. Some smaller news items like Ted Lasso going to FIFA 23 and VideoGameDunkey starting a game publishing company. Diablo 4 had some leaked footage come out around the time GTA6 had leaked so no one cared. Also, we discuss the relevance that G4 has in 2022 and if it may be sticking around or not. The brunt of the show is of course on the insane leak of GTA 6 and what it really reveals about the industry as well as some PSVR 2 news coming out that it will not be backwards compatible at launch.

ISOCristian is the man in the hot seat this week as we found ourselves buried by several different showcases to cover from the Marvel/Disney Showcase to the Direct and to the PlayStation State of Play. Before we go into that we touch on some recent previews of Forspoken and Bayonetta 3. Square changed how they look at the AAA projects. My experience with Discord on Xbox. PS5 sees large sales growth so far this year, at least in the UK. We discuss the amazing game that The Last of Us part I still is even after almost 10 years. We theorize on the potential of a new Switch next year and if the reason PlayStation has no firm date is the fear of a Switch coming soon after. Massive layoffs in the Gaming News Industry as G4 and FanByte sees large talent loss most likely related to revenue. Bonnie Ross, one of the most important people in Microsoft’s hit franchise Halo has left 343 citing medical family issues and her role has been split in three as a restructure occurred upon her leaving. UbiSoft speaks in circles as they want to focus on more people but cite their interest in Assassin’s Creed but of course we are seeing over 5 new titles coming in the next 5 years. Dan is back this week, although a bit under the weather, but he makes the most of it and I speak for all the Achievers, I am sure, thanking him for coming by this week. We had a light news week filled with speculation as we are seeing a slow down in hard news to talk about. We discuss some hot topics that have been circling the sphere of games media like the Bungie worker drama, the backlash Glen Schofield found himself in after a specific tweet, and even more exciting(is this exciting?), is the spat between two CEOs of major companies' gaming division around the fact of “Is Call of Duty going to be exclusive?”. Rumors are dense this week as we see screenshots of Silent Hill leak, we are not getting to obscene levels of leaks from that particular game, we also have word of a new TMNT game coming soon, and we see talk of the next two Assassins Creed games being leaked, mostly their setting and time period. One I did want to highlight here is the Tencent purchase of Guillemot Brothers limited. I want to hear your thoughts on this seemingly shrewd move, is it linked to acquiring more later, is this buying them time for something, or is this a defensive play to ensure no one else can purchase UbiSoft outright. Quick Correction for the show I found while I was getting timestamps. During the Halo conversation Dan and I were having the mention of staff count came up and I mentioned I thought 343 was mid 100s. Clearly this was a huge mistake as of course 343 is closer to 1000 than 100 which is what I think I meant? I am not entirely sure but I wanted to put this correction in to clear any possible confusion.
I have someone that I feel like I have become fast friends with, Daniel Prindle. He is host and founder of Podcast PXN and someone who I think brings an interesting perspective into games. Well we almost had a soft week in terms of news but Embracer Group ensured that would not happen. We discuss the obvious here with the giant fire sale that the conflamerate went under. Buying multiple studios like Tripwire, Tuxedo Labs, and of course the much bigger acquisition of Lord of the Rings. That dominates most of the show but we also go into the future of NFT integration into games, a fascinating Team Asobi interview, and Xbox hinting that Death Stranding may be coming to Game Pass for PC. WOW!!! I can not believe I am saying this but Hasan Kaharam actually gave an interview to a few people about his game and the strange situation surrounding his game. Frankly I can not believe he agreed to this so we shall see what comes of him or what his games are if they ever see the light of day. We do have a longer show for you this week I found a fascinating article by USA Today about Aaryn Flynn a former GM at Bioware about his career but mainly about Dragon Age Inquisition. We discuss the two major points that he brought up as center points to some of the failures of the game. We touch on some new games that were announced as well as a couple games coming to a close. Revealed in Warzone and detailed on their blog, it takes place in WW2 and seems to be showcasing some not much seen war fronts.
