The way you speak to yourself is incredibly powerful. It determines your relationship with yourself, how you feel and the results you get (or don’t) in your life. Yet if you’re like most people, you are focusing more energy on communicating with others while not paying much attention to your self talk.

But here’s the great news: the same skills you use for talking to others can be used when you talk to yourself! In this episode, you'll learn strategies to improve your inner dialogue, and several suggested phrases you can start using right away.

Curious to learn more about how this works? Then be sure to join me for my upcoming webinar on Wednesday, March 6. I'll be sharing how to use the CALM method to cure your Headless Chicken Syndrome." If you've ever felt like you're running on autopilot, overwhelmed with an endless to-do list and struggling to be present, you're not alone. In today's episode, I’m sharing all about Headless Chicken Syndrome: what it is, the root causes, and what you can do about it.

I’ll explain how the 5 Unspoken Rules (control enthusiasm, perfectionism, people-pleasing, hustle, and hyper-rationality) make it particularly difficult to set ourselves free from Headless Chicken Syndrome.

Then, I’ll reveal the missing piece of the puzzle: the essential skill of allowing your emotions. And I mean all of them - both good AND bad.

Most of us have never been taught this incredibly powerful skill. But once you learn it, you’ll be able to create your own CALM amidst the chaos and cure Headless Chicken Syndrome once and for all.

And don't miss out on the upcoming webinar where we'll explore these concepts further. Let's dive in and reclaim a calmer, more connected life together.

Ever find yourself puzzled by the choices you make? This week, I'm sharing the answer to one of life's biggest mysteries: why do we do the things we do? (and why DON'T we do things even when it seems we should?)

I'll explore the complex relationship between our emotions and behaviors. Gain insights into how your feelings can both fuel and foil your professional and personal growth. We'll unpack strategies to cultivate emotions that serve your goals and manage the negative emotions that hold you back, like avoidance or misplaced anger.

Ready to step into the best version of yourself? Let's confront the discomfort together. I'll guide you through acknowledging the societal pressures that make it difficult to face challenging emotions head-on, and learning to recognize and address your feelings.

Facing your feelings - both good and bad - may sound scary, but I promise it's not as bad as you think. And it's worth it! Once you learn this skill, you'll be able to stop shying away from necessary confrontations, or drowning your sorrows in the next Netflix binge. You'll stop letting your emotions hold you back from being the mom and wife you want to be, and you'll be able to accomplish your goals more quickly.

When was the last time you asked yourself: "What do I need here?" Or if you did, when was the last time you answered honestly, from the heart, noticing what emotional needs you have in that given moment?

In this episode, I'm sharing why this deceptively simple question is so powerful.

If you're like most of the high-achieving working moms I know, you can't remember the last time you asked yourself what YOU need...because you're too busy worrying about meeting everyone else's needs! Or perhaps you thought about it, but the answer was really just more of what you "should" do or what you "have to" do.

It takes courage to ask this question, answer honestly, and do what it takes to meet our emotional needs. Especially when that means we have to disappoint someone else or be a little less perfect.

We are taught to believe that acknowledging our emotions is self-indulgent and a waste of time. But it's not. It's essential. It's the key to feeling less overwhelmed and showing up as the calm, connected moms we want to be. And this simple question is the first step.

So take a listen and give it a try this week. You might be surprised at what a difference it makes!

PS I'll be digging even deeper into this topic in my upcoming Webinar on Thursday, Feb 8th: Cure Your Headless Chicken Syndrome with the CALM Method.
I'll show you how simple strategies like this can make a huge difference in your life. Register HERE.

Happy New Year! As we kick off 2024, it's a great time to think about our goals for the New Year. In today's episode, I'm sharing a simple, straightforward system that will help you evaluate where you are and where you want to go.

As you go through this process, you'll learn to manage your mind to stay focused and positive. This will make your goal-setting more effective and more enjoyable, and you'll find you are less likely to get stuck in overwhelm or self-criticism.

Here's an overview of how it works:
1 List out the main areas of your life
2 Review each area & give it a rating from 1-10
3 Define what a "10" would look like for each area
4 Choose one main area of focus
5 Write down:
- What's working in this area?
- What's not working in this area?
- What will I do differently to get closer to a "10" in this area?
The list you make at the end of Step 5 will comprise your goals or "Resolutions' for the New Year. As you look at the list, you'll notice that these questions have naturally guided you to create a list of goals and plans that are prioritized, pragmatic, and actionable.

So grab a pen and piece of paper and follow along with me as we set ourselves up for success this year!

This week, I'm exploring one of my favorite metaphors for managing your mind when you feel stuck in overwhelming thoughts or emotions. Whether it’s anxiety about parenting in public, workplace challenges, or battling your inner critic, these feelings can be like characters in the movie “Inside Out.” Picture them in the backseat of your mind, vying for attention. Of course, you are the one driving. You know where you want to go. You don't want to let those distracting thoughts or emotions take the wheel. And you also can't spend too much time & energy getting annoyed or arguing with them.

In this episode, I share insights and practical strategies for taking control of the steering wheel, acknowledging these emotions without letting them dictate the journey. Discover the power of setting boundaries with your thoughts, managing emotions in a healthy way, and embracing the messy, beautiful aspects that make you authentically you. Join me and learn how to stay in the driver's seat, navigating your way calmly and purposefully toward the life you want to create.

Calling all overwhelmed working moms! Do you find yourself rolling your eyes when people talk about taking time for yourself? Sounds nice, but who can carve out an hour or two when the to-do list never ends and you're not sleeping enough as it is ?

Then this episode is for you! I am sharing 25 of my favorite simple self-care practices that take take 10 minutes or less. These quick practices are designed to fit into your hectic schedule. There's something here for everyone, whether you are in the mood for a quiet solo activity, social connection, exercise, or even cleaning. I'll delve into how to infuse these small pockets of happiness into your everyday life. Many of the suggestions on this list have been proven to improve your mental health - even if you only engage in them for a few minutes.

Often we let ourselves get caught up in this idealized image of the perfect self-care ritual- which is great, if you can make that happen. But for many of us, that's not realistic. And focusing on the time we DON'T have prevents us from making the most of the moments we DO have. We are "letting the perfect be the enemy of the good." But if we can allow ourselves to let go of perfection and do what we can when we can, we can actually see better results.

So...take a listen and together, let's rewrite the rules and prioritize self-care.

Ever felt like you're doing everything by the book but still don't feel fulfilled? Well, you're not alone. Dr. Jennie Eckstrom, my friend and fellow physician, shares her experiences in a powerful conversation that is guaranteed to make you question your own life rules. Despite a successful medical career and personal life, Jennie found herself yearning for something more. Through the use of coaching, she was able to transform her internal dialogue, establish new life rules, and craft a more fulfilling existence. Her passion for real estate has also been pivotal in building connections beyond her medical career.

Jennie's journey doesn't stop there. She bravely redefined boundaries in her life, not just at work but also as a mother, making bold moves that have now set a precedent for many of us. We also take a deep dive into the often unspoken struggle among physicians - the pressure to conform leading to feelings of isolation and disconnect from our passions. Jennie's inspiring journey led her to the community she needed to support her passion for real estate, leading to new connections with physicians practicing independently.

Lastly, we chat about the power and benefits of coaching in personal transformation. Jennie talks about her experiences with various coaching and group programs that helped her understand her inner dialogue better. We share resources like BiggerPockets, Black Swan, and Uncluttered Mind, MD for those interested in exploring outside of medicine. We round off the discussion with the incredible benefits of community building and the power of personal transformation, and how these can help physicians create fulfilling lives inside and outside the medical field.

Ready to improve your emotional and mental health, all at the tip of your fingers? In this episode, I share three smartphone apps that have been game-changers for my mental wellbeing. I truly believe everyone can benefit from using these tools, and they are particularly invaluable for working moms with ADHD (like me and many of my clients).

1 - "How We Feel" - Improve your emotional intelligence, learn emotional regulation skills, track your moods and find patterns, and even share them with your loved ones if you choose. This app was created with the help of Marc Brackett, PhD, a Yale professor who studies emotions and wrote the excellent book "Permission to Feel." The app is quick & easy to use, and entirely free.

2 - "Insight Timer" - The largest available collection of free meditations, with options to suit every preference, as well as sleep meditations, sleep stories, white noise, yoga and more. This app is flexible and easy to use even if you find meditation difficult to fit into your schedule. There is a truly optional paid Pro membership if you want more content, but you still get access to more free meditations than anywhere else. When you first join Insight Timer, it can feel overwhelming, so to help you get started, I've put together a list of links to my favorite free Insight Timer meditations. Download it here.

3 - "Focus@Will" This app provides music specifically optimized to help you focus and be more productive. It was created after extensive research and the music is personalized to the way each person's individual brain works. It has been absolute game-changer for my focus and productivity. This one is not free, but it's affordable, and there is a 1 week free trial so you can be sure it works for you before you spend any money. I'm not one to spend money on apps, but I invested in this because it works so well!

Did you know it is possible to believe new things? This week, I'm sharing a simple strategy to do just that.

Sometimes we hear a concept on a podcast or social media post and it makes sense, but it sounds too good to be true. We think "Sounds nice...for her. It's not true for me. " I think of this as my brain calling "BS" on it. Or perhaps it sounds completely reasonable and we decide we want to adopt that mindset...BUT later, you realize you aren't acting in alignment with the new concept. You haven't shifted your mindset, and you're stuck in your old patterns.

This is because simply hearing ideas or repeating them like "mantras" doesn't always work. In order to change your life, you have to truly believe and embrace new thoughts.

One way to help your brain begin to believe new things is to add "softening" words to the beginning or end of the thought, such as:

"what if..."
"it's possible..."
"maybe..."
"I'm learning..."
"I'm considering..."
"...sometimes"

Take a listen to this quick episode to hear how it works. Then choose one new thought you will "soften up," write it down, and review it at least once a day.

This is just one of the strategies I teach my private coaching clients. If you're ready to work with me to get faster & more personalized results, schedule a free consult today.

This week, I'm sharing the Unspoken Rules that keep working moms stuck in exhaustion and overwhelm. These rules are beliefs that have been ingrained in us by family and society since childhood. Often we aren't even consciously aware of them anymore, but we still follow them and they can have a lot of power over how we feel and how we act.

I've found that all high-achieving working moms have Unspoken Rules that boil down to one ore more of 5 categories.

They all center around what we think we "need" in order to feel good:
In order to feel better, I need...
1 Them to change / This thing to change (Arguing with Reality / Control Enthusiasm)
2 To be perfect/To get it right (Perfectionism)
3 Them to like me / approve of me (People-pleasing)
4 To get more done (Hustle Mindset)
5. People to be logical (Hyper-Rationality)

These Rules aren't all bad; in fact, many of them have helped us succeed in the past. But if you're struggling right now, I guarantee that at least one or more of these rules is at the root of it.
Listen to hear more about how these Rules show up in our lives, how to uncover your Rules by asking "why is this a problem for me?" and more!

This is just a quick overview, so be sure to also grab the free replay & slides from my webinar " How to Feel Better: Stop Following These 5 Unspoken Rules for a deeper dive into this topic.

This week, I’m sharing about a painful rejection I experienced recently. This episode is raw.  There are a few tears along the way. (You’ve been warned!)

I wanted to share this openly because I’m betting you can relate. And I want you to see how it looks to coach yourself through it.

I know this is not the done thing. High achieving women - especially coaches - are supposed to have it all together. To be confident. We share our wins.

But the truth is, we also lose sometimes. We fail.  And if we don’t talk about it, we all just continue to feel more isolated.

So I’m putting it out here:
I “lost.” They didn’t pick me.
I’m not letting it stop me.
And neither should you. 💕

This week, we're picking up where we left off last time.

Your answer the question "why is this a problem for me?" will give you the root cause of the issue. This is the core thought or belief that is making it so difficult.
You can then use this insight as a guide to solve your problem & begin feeling better.

Because you always have options.Even if at first it seems hopeless.

And your options to feel better will always fall into one of these 3 categories:
👉🏻Change the situation
👉🏻Address your thought
👉🏻Allow your uncomfortable emotion

Take a listen to hear how this works in a real-life situation I had a few years ago.
And as you do, think of a situation in your own life where you feel stuck or frustrated or hopeless. Then make a list of all the options you have to feel better. You might be surprised to find that you have more power than you think!

Why is that a problem for me?

This is going to sound too simple, but I promise it works.
It doesn’t solve everything but it gets easier from there.
Usually my child begins visibly calming in under a minute.

It's not...
👉🏻Trying to solve their problem
👉🏻A pep talk
👉🏻Using logic to convince them their emotion doesn't make sense
👉🏻Explaining why their behavior is problematic
👉🏻Rewards or consequences

It's easier than all of that: Just validate their emotion!

It might sound like:
“You’re right. This sucks.”
“It makes sense you feel angry.”
“I hate it when my food isn’t the way I expected, too.”
etc.
(Add a hug if possible.)

And the best part? It helps with everyone, not just kids.
Because putting emotions first improves ALL relationships.

Try it and let me know how it works for you!

This week, we're wrapping up our conversation about gaslighting.

In Part 1 of Rethinking Gaslighting, we talked about where the term "gaslighting" originated, how it's defined, and how it is now used to describe many different types of behaviors...not all of which are the same!

In this episode, we're picking up where we left off last time. Learn how the gaslight effect is actually a dynamic between two people. The gaslighter and the gaslightee both have a a role in creating gaslight effect.
The Gaslighter: "I can only feel good if the gaslightee does what pleases me"
The Gaslightee: "I can only feel good if the gaslighter is pleased with me"

The gaslighter controls & manipulates.
The gaslightee accommodates and people-pleases.
But they share the same root belief:

I can only feel good if the other person responds in the way I want.

AKA emotional Immaturity.

That's why, when we feel we are being gaslighted, even though being a gaslightee is described as being a victim, we want to start by reflecting on our half of the interaction. We can learn to become more emotionally mature.

As we learn to manage our own emotions - instead of outsourcing them to the approval of the other person - that person begins to lose their power over us.

In this episode, I shared the most important questions to ask yourself as you go through this process. You'll see how this strategy is more effective than wasting energy on judging and shaming the other person. You'll have more energy and clarity to decide what you want to do about the gaslighting relationship. You'll stop feeling like a victim. Then, we'll walk through your options to respond to gaslighting.

And whatever you decide, you'll be doing it from a place of confidence and emotional maturity. You'll be ready to have your own back, no matter what.

Take a listen, and when you are ready to apply this work to your own relationships,I can help.

In honor of Mother's Day, I'm sharing this bonus episode about how becoming a mom made me a better doctor.

I share about an interaction with my son that helped me understand what it means to offer someone grace, empathy, and truly 100% unconditional love.

It soon occurred to me that I could choose to approach my patients in a similar way. I was able to show up as a more compassionate and connected doctor. Not only did this help my patients, but it also helped me. I began to feel less burned out and emotionally exhausted.

This lesson has been a true gift in my life. Perhaps it comes more easily to some than to others. But I can honestly say that if I hadn't become a mother, I doubt I would ever have learned it.

Fair warning: this one may be a bit controversial! And could even be triggering if you've been traumatized by gaslighting or emotional abuse.

Today we are rethinking Gaslighting.

This concept has spread like wildfire in the past few years, even being named the Word of the Year for 2022. You may have noticed it cropping up in conversations with friends and family, or in the media.

In today's episode, I'll start with the basics: what gaslighting is, where the term originated, and how it can be a hallmark of emotional abuse and narcissism.

Then we'll explore how the term also gets applied to many situations which are not so clearly abusive, and why that can lead to blame, shame, and relationship problems.

Finally, I'll discuss how taking a more thoughtful approach can help:

Step 1 - Get clear about what we really mean. When we think "You're gaslighting me," what we often really mean is: "I feel like I'm being gaslighted." (ie "I feel I'm being invalidated." or "I feel my reality is being questioned.").

Step 2 - Dig a little deeper. Get skeptical. Ask whether we are certain that:

  • The situation is objective & verifiable
  • The person is aware of what they are doing, and
  • The person has malicious intent to control, manipulate, take advantage

Next week, we'll explore more about how to put this into practice.

I’ve learned so many life lessons from parenting my two children. Sometimes, the same skills I use to help my children can be applied to managing myself, or in interactions with other adults. At other times, it’s more explicit: one of my kids says something that surprises me and gives me an entirely new perspective.

I’m going to be sharing some of these lessons from parenting here on the podcast. And I'm starting this week with a conversation I had with my 9 year old son about our dogs. You might not expect to find wisdom there. But his belief that being unique was more valuable than conforming to an “ideal’ standard was thought-provoking. It led me to reconsider why it is that I (and we as a society) tend to work so hard not to seem different.

What if we truly believed that being different and unique was more valuable than being "normal" and fitting in with the group?

If you're enjoying this podcast, please leave a quick 5 star rating & review. This will help us reach even more women like you!

Narcissism is a hot topic lately. It seems like every day I hear someone bringing it up: wondering if someone they know might be a narcissist, and if so, what to do: How should they interact, do they need to cut that person out completely, is there any hope for them to grow and change, how can they set boundaries with the narcissist. Some also wonder if perhaps THEY could be the narcissist=, because they do some narcissistic things at times. in this episode, I'll share my perspective on narcissism, which is a bit different than what you'll hear from most people. I'll talk about: - narcissistic personality disorder vs narcissistic traits- the link between emotional immaturity and narcissism- how all humans are emotionally immature at times, so we have to de-shame it- why focusing on whether THEY are a narcissist is not very useful (even if true)- What I recommend you focus on instead. Once you understand these concepts, it becomes so much easier and less dramatic to interact w the (potential) narcissists in your life. You'll waste less energy on being annoyed or trying to get them to change. This will free up more energy to understand YOURSELF better. To choose if you want to stay in a relationship wtih them or not. To set boundaries & stick to them calmly. From a place of love rather than shame & judgment.. "I have needs too!" my 5 year old daughter yelled one day. It stopped me in my tracks. She was right. I wanted her to push aside her needs in order to make my life easier. And that wasn't the mom I wanted to be.As I continued to reflect on that experience, I gained a new perspective on my daughter, myself, and about all women. How many of us are socialized from a very young age to ignore our own needs, whether physical or emotional? And what are the consequences of this? Ultimately, this journey has given me more compassion and deep, unconditional love for my daughter... and myself. It's hard enough to have your own back when you're proud of yourself and others don't get it. But what about when you're NOT proud of how you showed up? How can you love yourself when you get it wrong? When your inner critic just keeps finding more flaws to point out? It is not easy, especially for those of us who have perfectionist tendencies. We often struggle to believe "it's ok for me to get it wrong" or "it's ok for me to be human" unless we have a good justification as to why things didn't go well. But the fact is we can choose at anytime to believe these thoughts, even if there's no logical explanation and we just messed up. In making this mindset shift, we give ourselves an amazing gift: unconditional love. As we practice loving our own brand of humanity, with its unique flaws, we begin to truly know, like, and trust ourselves.Other highlights:- It's OK for me to get it wrong- How this shows up specifically for physicians- Physician suicide risks, National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, Sept 17- "I am human." - "I will never intentionally mistreat myself."In this episode: Heidari, Shireen. Criticism and negative feedback are unavoidable, especially for high achieving women. While we can’t stop others from offering us their opinions, we do always have a choice how we respond. By checking in and asking “Am I happy with how I showed up?” you’ll be able to have your own back and respond more effectively. Does it feel like you can never get everything done, no matter how much you do? Do you wake up thinking about all you need to do, and go to bed thinking about how you didn't get it all done? Brene Brown calls this "hustling for worthiness." This is one of the most common struggles for high achieving moms and we are getting to the root of it in today's episode!

Hustling for worthiness is tied to the rule we discussed last week: "I need to fix it." We tend to assume "fixing" means DOING something. We have a bias toward action. So when we don't feel like we are good enough, our instinct is to take more action. We think that doing more, crossing things off the list and being busy will make us feel good about ourselves.

But that's not how it works. Our ACTIONS don't determine whether we feel good or bad. Our THOUGHTS do that. We are working backwards. The result is an endless cycle where we set ourselves up to fail, no matter what we do.

How can we stop the cycle? We notice when we are trying to hustle in order to feel better. We practice interrupting that habit so we can focus on our thoughts instead. We cultivate a habit of resting, even if it's just for 2min a day. We practice believing we are always enough, and that it has nothing to do with our actions.

Other highlights: - How capitalism, patriarchy, and ADHD contribute to our action bias - Why we get addicted to action, and how rest can feel like being in "detox" - I am a human being, not a human doing - Don't just do something, stand there - I am 100% worthy & lovable, no matter what - I have time for what matters most to me - I can do anything but not everything

“I need to fix it” is one of the most common unwritten rules that adds stress to our lives.

When we or our loved ones are in a difficult situation, often the default response (particularly as high achieving, smart women) is to try to “fix” the situation. We think we need to solve it. And sometimes we ARE able to fix it. But other times we’re not. That’s when we find ourselves feeling stuck, stressed, overwhelmed. All because we are following this unwritten rule.

Here’s the great news: we don’t always have to fix the situation. We do have other options. We are not stuck.

Episode highlights: - Why the belief “I have to fix this” can be problematic - How the 3 D’s - Detect, Dig Deeper, Decide - can help you coach yourself - The 3 options that are always available in a difficult situation: fix circumstances, address thoughts, accept feelings. - Focus on power instead of control - How to be a skeptic with your own brain: “don’t believe everything you think” - You are a human being, not a human doing

And so much more!

Knowing what you want isn’t always as simple as it sounds, particularly for high achieving women! Many of us have spent our entire lives focusing on what other people want and what we think we “have to” do. In the midst of all that, often we lose the ability to recognize what WE truly want…not to mention actually choosing to DO it. This is one of the reasons we end up feeling burned out, overwhelmed, and unfulfilled.

This week on Rethink Your Rules, Jenny explores the different reasons we may think we “want” something, or think we should want something. And how to separate that from what YOU truly desire.

This week, learn why your negative feelings are like a smoke detector. And what you can do when that alarm goes off.

We've already explored the unwritten relationship rule “I am responsible for how they think and feel. But how can you tell when this thought is causing problems for you? And what can you do about it?

If you follow along and honestly answer these questions, it will help you in so many ways! You’ll have a better understanding of why you do what you do. You’ll be more intentional in your choices and take more ownership of your life. And even if you decide not to change a thing, being more truthful with yourself is always a good thing.

This week, we’re rethinking another unwritten relationship rule:

“I am responsible for how they think and feel about me.”

This is the underlying thought that leads to people-pleasing. But it also underlies many of our distinctly UNpleasant behaviors, including anger, defensiveness and resentment.

Jenny shares where this belief comes from, why it’s so common (especially among women!) and how it can be problematic. You’ll also come away with tips to notice where it may be showing up in your life.

“I need them to change so I can feel better” is one of the most prevalent beliefs we have about relationships. It’s a rule that has been deeply ingrained in most of us since childhood, where we are taught “you hurt their feelings; you need to apologize and not do it again.” It sounds nice on the surface, so most of us never question it. But it underlies many of our most frustrating relationship issues. This belief results in blaming our bad feelings on someone else. We give them the power to determine whether we feel good or bad. And that’s a shaky foundation!

In this week’s podcast, Jenny talks about how this unwritten rule shows up in relationships, and the power of taking responsibility for your own emotions.

School shootings, Supreme Court decisions, the war in Ukraine, the broken health care system, the economy…all of these are issues that tend to bring out big emotions in us. During the pandemic, Kelley was one of the only people I could truly relate to Between being a health care worker, parenting differently wired kids, having ADHD, and holding political/social views at odds with many friends and family... it was easy to feel isolated and misunderstood. But whenever Kelley and I talked (and we do LOVE to talk...as you'll notice!), we remembered that we were not alone. We came away with fresh insights that have made life so much better.

Lately, we've heard from other women like us who feel alone, just like we did. So we decided to start sharing our conversations here. We'll be discussing medicine, parenting, ADHD, life coaching, communication, and more. So please take a listen and get to know Kelley!
