Andrea and Duane
Andrea and Duane have been married going on 27 years and have 5 children that have, for the most part, safely made it to adulthood. Actually, one is a teenager but after the 4 made it, the 16 year old might as well be an adult. Andrea is a nurse and Duane is a marriage and family therapist. Join them as they share their journey of life that they refer to as the wilderness. They hope to make you laugh, cry, think, and escape with them as they share stories and memories of marriage, kids, family, in-laws, friends, and neighbors.
Some may be thinking that it would be natural for a nurse and a therapist, with 5 kids, to talk about the birds and the bees. This is not that talk and maybe that one will be on the horizon. Andrea and Duane dive into the other, often difficult, discussion about race. Andrea was raised in a predominantly black community as a child of mixed race. Duane often stood out in a predominantly white community. Both share how these experiences have shaped their world views and discuss why it's important to continue having these discussions.
Andrea and Duane are joined by their 5 children, daughter-in-law, and soon to be son-in-law for a discussion of parenting and what it was and is like to be raised by parents that followed in many of the traditions of their own parents. If you ever had parents use the phrase, "I ain't one of your little friends," this episode may bring a smile to your face. Andrea and Duane share their experiences of chasing a dream a failing miserably. They did learn a few lessons along the way and managed to stay married. The dark road can teach resiliency and clarify what's important in life which is what episode 2 is all about.
Every journey has a beginning and our story is not too unique. Of course, our story does include making a statement that you are going to marry a complete stranger before ever seeing their face and then later buying the engagement ring a proposing before the first date. This episode is a look back at how this all played out 27 years ago.
