Some years people tell me they can’t find the Christmas spirit. Usually that's because of some pain or difficulty in their lives at the moment. The feeling of loss can be the same whether it's the heartbreak of divorce or actually losing a family member. And so I hope that today we can unpack this a little bit and talk about those feelings and how, as usual, we are encouraged to choose the joy of the holiday season. These are journeys filled with pain, helplessness, and, eventually, peace.

We're back with Amish-raised Sara Daigle in part two of her interview. This week, I want to unpack our stories about navigating relationships, faith, and the journey to rediscover joy. These are stories of resilience, heartbreak, and ultimately, transformation — not just for those who have faced trials in their relationships, but for anyone seeking hope and faith amid challenges.
When we talk about difficult relationships, it's tempting to stay silent, but sharing our stories has incredible power. As women, we often feel isolated, thinking, No one else could possibly understand. But the truth is, many women suffer silently, especially in relationships where love turns into control, and trust is replaced by betrayal.
Today, I want to explore why these conversations matter—why breaking silence is a step toward reclaiming our worth and faith. And I will take the first step: sharing my own story.
Women need to know they are not alone, and their struggles are seen by others and, more importantly, by God.

Sara Daigle is our guest in the first episode of a NEW focus on Christian women, marriage and divorce.
Sara was raised in an Amish community and when she married, her history of obedience caused her to put up with a marriage that tolerated pornography. Her husband asked her to consider engaging in an open marriage, and she said no. But these trials forced her to cling to the Lord, who delivered her from that relationship. She also began to teach her daughters how to have a blessed relationship. Part one of a multi-part episode. We will unpack a lot of Sara's wisdom next week. Come back!

The Altered Stories Podcast
We’re pivoting here at the Positively Joy podcast to a topic that many women will find incredibly relevant. Relationships. The Lord has put on my heart to talk about my own difficult divorce and journey back to joy, a journey where God was my everything. I remember how hard it was, and in these upcoming seasons we’ll get real and talk about the hurt, the pain, the loss and freedom in Jesus.
After 13 years of marriage to a man with bipolar depression, I found myself lost in the aftermath of our divorce. The emotional toll of navigating his illness left me drained and questioning my worth. In my search for joy, Psalm 91 became my refuge. The words, “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings, you will find refuge,” spoke deeply to my wounded heart. Through faith, self-reflection, and God’s protection, I discovered that joy isn’t dependent on circumstances. It’s a choice. By leaning on His promises, I found love for myself, peace in His presence, and joy in the small, everyday moments.
I hope you join us, and share this with those you think need to hear these conversations. It’s still Positively Joy, but more.

Going back into the archives, I promised to focus more on prayer in 2022 in this throwback episode. Did I do it? Well, I can say for sure I brought God into my daily life, but I still have some work to do on my prayer life. Talking to God is so important, and you - and I - should do it more often. This week, our conversation is about forgiveness, and it's a really unique episode. Could you forgive your grandmother's killer? Today's guest is Sarah Gregory, and her story is hard to fathom. She has forgiven the man who murdered her grandmother, but not only that, spent hours with him on death row the day he was executed. Her forgiveness wasn't automatic, though, and she had a long, hard road to get there. Bruce Springsteen's music plays a role, believe it or now.

The average American watches a screen 52.5 hours in a week and that includes children. Brent Dusing can't change that, but he wants to do something about it with his new Christian gaming platform called TruPlay. Says Brent, "The Bible says the eyes are the windows of the soul, so we know whatever content that we take in is going to change what we think, how we process emotions, what we believe to be true.

Ashley Ashcraft posted a heartfelt message on Facebook. She and her husband had just been told that the baby inside her most likely had Down syndrome. What struck me was the joy, trust and faith she presented, and the knowledge that her baby – no matter what happened – was a gift from God. Her baby was born early and is the intensive care unit, right where Ashley recorded this interview. Please pray for Ashley and her newborn, Finley.
Ashley is praying "The Magnificat," Mary's prayer to magnify God. She would like it if you would pray with her.
The Magnificat, or Mary's Song
And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
Luke 1:46-55

It's a replay on this Throwback Thursday! In one of our most listened-to episodes, Sara Daigle was raised in an Amish Community. When she married, her history of obedience caused her to put up with a marriage that tolerated pornography and even considerations of possibly having multiple partners in marriage. But these trials forced her to cling to the Lord, who delivered her from that relationship. She also began to teach her girls how to have a blessed relationship.

It's Mother’s Day on Sunday. My mother left this earth two decades ago and I think of her often. Today, I’ll tell you about my fondest and strongest memory of her, sharing faith and being in church together. Bonus: A new song release!
Song lyrics to "My Mother's Hands"
Beautiful lady, we bow before the altar
You’re my everything I’m your little daughter
Every Sunday, your hand in mine. I remember...
Chorus
My mother’s hands, so warm so soft
Not perfect, no, but strong enough
My mother’s hands, caring but worn
You carried me from the day I was born
Standing in this church, I see you as a saint
To others you’re a servant, helping everyone
You’re out the door, there’s so much to be done. But I remember…
My mother’s hands, so warm so soft
Not perfect, no, but strong enough
My mother’s hands, caring but worn
Those hands held me till I was grown
She never forgot me;
Here’s what she taught me
Love justice, mercy and walk ever so humbly
And now, I’m all that’s left of …
My mother’s hands, so warm so soft
Not perfect no but strong enough
My mother’s hands caring but worn
She carried me till I was grown.
I have accepted a new job and I recently had to get a drug screening. It made me think of Jesus. Listen to hear why. This is part of my month of stories about me. It's a little break from the regular interviews, but we’re gearing up for a new season, season 5, of the Positively Joy podcast, which launches in May. I’m so excited to share with you all the new guests, including faithful women and men who have learned to find the joy of God despite trauma and loss. Their stories are compelling and will bless you.
We’re spending some time in special solo episodes during the month of April. You know, I don’t do this very often. I’d rather share others’ stories and not my own. Today I reveal why I attend two churches. If you don't have a church home, please visit some in your area, and find one (or two!) that connects with you.

TODAY is a special episode of Positively Joy because I’m sharing the latest episode of the Journalists Advancing Ministry podcast. I started thejam.online because I’ve noticed more journalists turning to ministry and professing their faith. Today’s guest, John Lundy, went from a 40-year career of reporting the news to telling the good news of what God is doing in the world for TWR, a global digital company that spreads the gospel.
Jessica Snowden is an entrepreneur who found encouragement from God in the most random way: through an encounter with a total stranger. People started calling the worship meetings in Asbury University revival, but sadly the word took a nasty turn. What is revival? And I don’t have a guest today, it’s just me, but I want to share with you my thoughts on this and what revival meant to me as a teenager growing up and learning to love God.

TODAY’s special episode gives me joy. It’s a new episode of my other podcast, Journalists Advancing Ministry, featuring my good friend, author and podcaster Cindy LaFavre Yorks. I started this at thejam.online because as a former journalist, I know I wrestled with my faith and my job. But I’m seeing more journalists turn to ministry, and I think that is a good thing. I still believe in the importance of journalism, but I know God created communicators to give him glory, and former journalists like Cindy and me are doing this.

Merry Christmas! What's your favorite Christmas movie or show? There are many excellent Christmas shows and movies to see, but there’s one show that, for me and my sister, Karen, beats them all. It's the 1968 TV show “The Little Drummer Boy.” Not the animated cartoon, but the original stop-motion show by Rankin & Bass and narrated by the incredible Greer Garson.
Today on the podcast, let me share some of YOUR favorites, and then I’ll tell you why I love this vintage TV show so much. Hint. It's about Joy.
Here is part two of our Christmas special replays! Season 3, Ep. 37: On his bio page, Shea Watson says, “I’m just a man who loves Jesus.” True, and a lot more. That’s why he’s my go-to interview for this different kind of Christmas story: Joseph’s role in the telling of the Nativity. Joseph was a man of God who shouldered the task given to him with compassion, grace, and love. In today’s episode. Watson, a husband, and dad, drops some wisdom on Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ.

"The Chosen," Season 3, launched last week in theaters worldwide. Audiences are able to see the first two episodes on the big screen. This is a fulfillment of director Dallas Jenkins’ dream to bring the life of Jesus to TV and movie watchers everywhere. I spoke to Dallas at a convention in 2021 and his honesty gives insight into where we are now with the series. I hope you enjoy this special replay episode.
As season 3 begins, Jesus gives the famous Sermon on the Mount, revealing the Beatitudes and feeding thousands with just a basket of fish and loaves. We know the miraculous end of this story, and season three begins to move away from the happy, fun, and Inspirational Jesus to the struggles of what will end with his death and resurrection. On this Thanksgiving weekend, Positively Joy presents a replay with Dallas as he discusses his intent for this series.
Angel Studios features "The Chosen" and other Christian entertainment here.

Welcome to part 3, our final part in the series, "Finding your purpose in the workplace with faith." Today, we have a fitting end with Steven Mudd, a young man who trained in college to go into broadcast TV but found God guiding him to Ministry at Victory Family Church in Oklahoma, instead. Would he follow the way God was leading him? And how did he feel about his dreams of broadcast stardom slipping away?
Steven mentioned this prayer in the episode:
Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me and before me. Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in hearts of all who know me. Christ in mouth of friend and stranger, Christ in quiet and in roar.
Love, blessed Trinity of three, Bound in unity Who guides my journey. I will arise with strength of heaven Trusting in Your light To guide my journey Shine before me Lead me home.
Power to guide me, might to hold me, Wisdom teach me, watching o’er me. Ear to hear me, hand to guard me, Love to conquer every fear.
-- Attributed to St. Patrick

It's in our occasional series on pop culture and faith, and in this episode, the Rev. Dr. Leah Schade returns to explore the fictional theocratic society Gilead. Throwback Thursday: Classic Rock group Pink Floyd called the feeling “comfortably numb,” in their song that talked about being anesthetized to get through life.
The funny thing is, you don’t know when you are numb to God. You don’t realize how your feelings, once so sharp and bright, like a burning flame, become cooled and dulled to the senses. It’s so easy to slip out of the light into numbness as we stop listening to his still, small voice, and tuning out the world.

Other than our perennial favorite, the Financial Diva Victoria Woods, our top-ranked interview was with Melissa Moore of the Faith Hope and Love podcast and community. Moore discusses holding on to her faith despite crushing grief in her life from her Bipolar II disorder, miscarriage, and the suicide of her mother.
Welcome to 5-minute Mondays. Where I share some encouragement, motivation and honesty in just five minutes! Today I want to talk about self-improvement through reading.
As I listened to God in 2020 command me to begin this ministry, I didn’t know what it would look like or what I would do. I never doubted his command or his Word, but like Moses, I did worry that I would not have the words to do it. I am not a Bible scholar or a minister. I had no training in religion, divinity or theology.
But he said to do it, and I said, “Yes, Lord.” I’m a journalist and educator by profession, and what I do know how to do is research.
That’s right, I’m starting the Positively Joy Book Club! If you’d like to read along with me, I’ll list the books I choose in the show notes. We’ll start with one book a month.
My first entry in the log? it will be “Contact with God: The Amazing Power of Prayer” by Jeanne Wilkerson. Come along with me and start your own reading log. Let’s gain the wisdom we need this year to share God’s word!
Find the book link through positivelyjoy.com.
I'm pleased to present this special Christmas episode, a compilation of podcasters from the Spark Media Network -- including yours truly. Season 3, Ep. 37: On his bio page, Shea Watson says, “I’m just a man who loves Jesus.” True, and a lot more. That's why he's my go-to interview for this different kind of Christmas story: Joseph's role in the telling of the Nativity. Joseph was a man of God who shouldered the task given him with compassion, grace, and love. In today's episode. Watson, a husband and dad, drops some wisdom on Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ.
It's a Replay! In Season 3, Episode 13, Lori Morrison is a private investigator and a woman of faith. Her podcast, “The Unlovely Truth,” is the intersection of both of these passions. On her show, she reviews true crime books with guests who can discuss crime and faith.
Recently I was talking with a friend about the fear and doubt that many Christian women experience. The “I could never do” the thing God asked us to do. The “I’m not worthy” of His trust. The “I’m not good enough” to share His message. That’s fear. But then, you decide to take a step. You do the thing. You obey. But there is something that is holding you back from fulfilling your holy mission. That thing is doubt. Listen today to learn how to conquer your doubt!

Author and coach Peggy Green has overcome the odds, and shares her personal story of life after losing two of her four children, one to suicide. We talk about her philosophies for surviving suicide loss and leaning on God in the middle of the mess.
One from the vault: Pastor and former coach Tom Mullens has a message: Get on offense. What does that mean? Well, have you ever felt like you were on a moving sidewalk? Not walking under your own power, just moving forward. Just going, not even toward an object or destination. That’s what’s it like to live “on defense.” Today, I reflect on Mullens’ message. And be encouraged — there’s a way out. I'll be back with a new episode next week!
Season 3, Episode 27: Cassandra Hill is a Holistic Wellness & Life Coach. She’s also a Christian. Cassandra empowers women to renew their minds, body, and soul. Season 3, episode 26: It's a fact – everything (and everyone) is only around for a season. Some seasons are longer, some shorter. Sometimes we wonder why relationships end, people die and things break. But we must remember that the only relationship that never dies is the one with God. I’ve been reading Sarah Philpott’s new book, “A Growing Season.” It’s a year of down on the farm devotions, and it’s really got me thinking about seasons in life. It’s available now at her website, allamericanmom.net, and on Amazon.
Do you have difficulty staying in prayer for more than a minute or two? Do thoughts of shopping lists, work projects, or kids’ schedules start to pop in your mind? Author and speaker, Rich Lewis coaches on contemplative, or centering prayer. It’s a way to stay in connection with God, silently, waiting on His still small voice to come to us. Today we talk to Rich about this kind of prayer, and we even attempt some of this prayer later in the show, so stay tuned.

Season 3, Episode 24: We see similarities in passages from James, the brother of Jesus, and from Peter, who Jesus named the head of the church. These two men both wrote on trials. Interestingly, the two books of Peter directly follow the book of James. Coincidence? I think not.
Season 3, Episode 23: The Ego. The id. Personality, Psychology. When I first talked to Christian de la Huerta, I wondered if his secular message of personal transformation would fit with the mission of this podcast. He told me, “our language might different,” but that he believed in the authentic message of Christ. After our interview, I realized that many of us can have a different way of talking about what gets in the way of our ability to get closer to God. I think you might find his ideas of the power of the soul stimulating and relevant, and I’d love to know your thoughts on this episode.
Season 3, Episode 22: Welcome to 5-minute Mondays, where I share some encouragement, motivation and honesty in just five minutes! In the book of James, Jesus' brother starts off writing about Joy. This drew my attention, of course, not because he writes about just any joy, but rather, this joy is found through troubles and tribulations.
This kind of joy is the hardest to grasp, and in many ways, is the whole reason for this podcast. How can we grasp and hold on to joy when we are at our lowest? James explains his reasoning in chapter 1, verse 2-5:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Let’s take this line by line and study how to find joy through trials.
Season 3, Episode 21: Hello, and thanks for stopping by! It’s a special day today. It’s Sept. 30, International Podcast Day. And as many of you know, it’s also the week after I published my 100th episode. I’ve been celebrating all last week and this week. And I wanted to make something special, and I wanted you to be a part of it. So I asked you to tell me what brings you Joy?
Today I want to feature 7 amazing people who answered that question. Before I do that, let me tell you what brings me joy. It’s the ability of doing this. Talking to you about the real, true joy of the Lord, every week on this podcast. I love doing this and I appreciate all of you who listen.
Our voices today will be, in order, the following media moguls, podcasters, and students of the Bible:
Thanks again for sharing what brings you joy.
Welcome to 5-minute Mondays. Where I share some encouragement, motivation, and honesty in just five minutes! Today, we’re coming down from last week, where I celebrated publishing 100 episodes. I packed so much into that week that you might have missed something. And I certainly don’t want you to miss a thing. Listen to find out the three things you might have missed!
Chelle Johnson had the kind of career that most people dream of. She worked for major corporations and had a loving husband and two kids. But she had some limiting beliefs and a childhood history that God wanted to heal her of: loss of a child, alcoholic husband, fear of leaving a big job. After going through recovery with her husband, God taught her what faith over fear really is. Now, Chelle helps other women through career resilience.
Season 3, Episode 18: Today marks our 100th episode of the podcast, and we are spending it with El Edwards of Youier! El lives in Wales, and is a "silver lining spotter," and her message is to stop worrying about being anyone's brand of normal and to be yourself. God loves you just the way you are. And the Holy Spirit will drive your life. Her story will resonate with all girls, women and mothers.
Season 3, Episode 17: She spells it Be[Loved], but Pamela Henkelman shares how we are all beloved in Christ. The author and speaker wrote a manifesto for women noting how God thinks about us.
Season 3, Episode 16: I went to the movies on Sunday, and as I walked in, a billboard the size of a Mack Truck greeted me. It was about the new upcoming movie "The Jesus Music." One phrase from the trailer really touched my heart: "Let’s not forget, music was God’s idea." Today I explore the first mentions of music in the Bible, and how Christian music is important to my faith walk. Watch the trailer for "The Jesus Music" here.
Season 3 Episode 15: Don't be scared, but we're talking about EVIL on the show today with the Rev. Dr. Leah Schade. It's part of our occasional series on how pop culture represents issues of faith and religion. We discuss "The Exorcist," "Evil" and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch." OK, it might be a little scary, but fun. Check it out!
Have you ever felt hopeless? I have many times, in the past and recently, too. In fact, just this past week. But this time, instead of succumbing to my hopelessness and allowing it to overtake me, I listened to the God of Hope.

Lori Morrison is a private investigator and a woman of faith. Her podcast, "The Unlovely Truth," is the intersection of both of these passions. On her show, she reviews true crime books with guests who can discuss crime and faith.
Season 3, Episode 11: Welcome to 5-minute Mondays, where I share some encouragement, motivation, and honesty in just five minutes! Today I want to talk about weakness. What does weakness have to do with finding God’s joy? Everything! Even though no one wants to be thought of as weak, and most of us would prefer to be strong, there is a relationship between the two.
Season 3, Episode 10: People come to Christianity in lots of different ways. And the place they come from can be just as varied. But finding Jesus is a blessing, no matter where you’ve come from. For Jenasa Staples, it was a New Age life of chakras and other practices that she believed was helping her. But one night, a video call to worship transformed her life.
Season 3, Episode 9: Michaela S. Cox is a 7-time published author who has traveled her journey of 38DDD to go from tribulation to thriving. What is 38DDD? It's not what you think! Michaela talks about her lifelong disability of legal blindness; divorce at 26; and the death of her beloved husband at 38.
Season 3, Episode 9: Welcome to the launch of a new segment: 5-minute Mondays. It's where I share some encouragement, motivation, and honesty in just five minutes! Today, I want to talk to you about being full and satisfied, from the book of Ephesians. Paul talks to the church about how to find true contentment and satisfaction through the Holy Spirit.
Season 3, Episode 8: Suzanne Eller is a best-selling author, the co-host of The More Than Small Talk podcast, and is a joyous woman. Her saying - "joy is more than a feeling, It's a knowing" - goes perfectly with the Positively Joy podcast. Her book, "JoyKeeper, six truths that change everything you thought you knew about joy," will help you understand the true nature of God's joy, even while you're walking through the valleys.
Season 3, Episode 7: This episode is completely unexpected! Creator and director of "The Chosen," Dallas Jenkins, dropped in The House of Joy, my Clubhouse room, last Friday. Dallas shared more wisdom and but also interacted with members in the room. The audio quality is, well, "special," but listenable. Be sure to listen to my previous podcast interview with Dallas at positivelyjoy.com.
Photo caption: Director Dallas Jenkins preps a scene for episode 3 of the first season.
Season 3, Episode 6: Classic Rock group Pink Floyd called the feeling “comfortably numb,” in their song that talked about being anesthetized to get through life.

Season 3, episode 5: Amy Wicks of Simply Wholehearted is a certified Enneagrams coach and helps Christians learn more about themselves to become better-functioning people at home, at work and even at church! I'm a 3-wing-2. Don't know that that means? Listen!
Season 3, Episode 4: Lois Hollis battled physical and mental pain for years, but she learned that often the underlying condition is shame and guilt, which partner together to push us down. Hollis also says shame and guilt do not come from God, and that we don't have to own them. Her video and a free resource is available at loishollis.com
Takeaway quote:
"(Shame and guilt are) not of the human condition ... it's not of us, so we don't have to own it. It's a negative energy placed upon humanity. We do not need shame/guilt to live."
Dallas Jenkins has created a different kind of series about Jesus. And, Jenkins said, he’s “obsessed” with making the experience authentic and intimate for viewers. I spoke to Dallas at the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Texas. We had a great conversation but the audio was noisy, being on the conference floor. Still, his message is important and worth listening.
And, when he talked about JOY he was really speaking my language!
Key takeaways:
“I don’t want people to glorify the show to the point where they think this is a replacement for the Bible,” Jenkins said. “I’m saying from the beginning, that the show is not God’s word. Jonathan (Roumie), who plays Jesus is not Jesus. I’m not the creator of the universe. I’m a broken, flawed man … who’s trying to do my best to capture the character and intentions of Jesus in the Gospels."

This is a real throwback, an early one all the way from season one when I was still calling this podcast Finding Joy. It's the one where I tell a story of a surprise visit that returned a dose of kindness in a very unexpected way. Listen to hear how my name ends up in Scripture. I hope you have been enjoying these throwback episodes. Season 3 is coming soon, bigger and better!
Happy Memorial Day! Today's episode veers off our regular focus of finding Joy. Today, we remember Memorial Day and the men and women of the armed forces. But for those of us who had a father who didn't fight, our hearts hold different memories.

It's a weird one, but here goes: You know God is working when you can learn about the Fruits of the Spirit -- most notably Joy -- through a dog named Lemon and a Mr. Bill dog toy. But that's how God works sometimes, and I love Him for it. Listen for a lesson from Paul's letter to the Galatians, not just about the Fruits and walking in the Spirit, but to abstain from walking in the flesh. We're talking pride today, and a reminder to run away from envy, hate and selfish ambition.

Pastor and former coach Tom Mullins has a message: Get on offense. What does that mean? Well, have you ever felt like you were on a moving sidewalk? Not walking under your own power, just moving forward. Just going, not even toward an object or destination. That’s what’s it like to live “on defense.” Today, I reflect on Mullins' message. And be encouraged -- there's a way out.
Today's episode is a short one but is uppermost on my mind today. I've been thinking that there are some things that run in the background of our lives. We don’t think about what makes them run, we don’t even think about them running at all. Until they don’t. And then, we realize how much we have depended on them. God's love and faithfulness is like that. Much like a broken-down refrigerator!

It may not look like yours so be patient and REST in Him. He does amazing things!"
This is a pretty unusual episode. Don't look for perfection. It's just me driving from one Easter service to another. I'm on the highway listening to Christian music and feeling inspired to talk to you.
As I mention in the service, here is Keith Green's Easter song. His music deepened my relationship with God and saved me during a very difficult summer while alone and on an internship in New York in 1982. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG8Tko3BzHk

Here are the Bible verses read in the episode: Isaiah 52:13-53:12 and 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11 (I mispeak in the audio, It's not Isaiah 54)
It's fitting that for this Throwback Thursday I showcase the first show of Season 2: Mary Jo Pierce! Mary Jo Pierce calls her kitchen her second prayer room, because she observes the traditional Jewish Sabbath by baking Challah and worshipping on Friday nights. With others around her table, they eat and celebrate Jesus. The act is a form of worship and Biblical, she says, because the Lord is present in the form of the bread.
As Jews and Christians alike this week celebrate our God (through Passover and Easter) the act of Sabbath connects us. Let Mary Jo inspire you through her passion of prayer and bread.
Hip hop artist Lil Nas X this week released a new song and music video, “Montero,” in which the Grammy Award winner for “Old Town Road” appears in the Garden of Eden, falls from Heaven to Hell to give a lap dance to Satan, and then snaps the devil’s neck, puts on his horns and appears to assume the new title of the Evil One. Is this a slap in the face to the Body of Christ? Both the images and the lyrics are intense. The song paints a dark picture of drug use, fornication, and envy.
We love Jesus, and we love movies! The Rev. Dr. Leah Schade and Ph.D. student Ben Hollenbach join the show today to talk about how film depicts Jesus Christ and other Biblical figures ... sometimes right, sometimes wrong, but we three movie nerds have fun talking about it. Leah and Ben share a lot of knowledge and history on these films. Plus, a BIG announcement at the end of the show. So listen, and stick around till the end!

Author Josh Kelley penned his book "Radically Normal" after struggling with the question of how much he had to do to believe he was a real Christian. He learned that you can be a devoted follower of Christ by not comparing yourself with others. After writing "Normal" and another one on bartending, he now helps others write their own testimonies. Listen to this important message on following Jesus and not others.

Today, two Christian podcasters join me to talk about a TV ad that raised a lot of controversy: Jeep’s Super Bowl ad with musician Bruce Springsteen that talked about unity and featured a little church in the middle of the USA. What did you think about the ad? Was it Christian? Patriotic? Offensive? Or just right?
Tim Winders of Seek Go Create and David Weaver of Revitalize Kindness join the Positively Joy podcast to tackle an important issue. Is Unity the same for everyone?
If you haven’t already seen the ad, watch the ad here (which has been removed because of a past DUI by the singer).

Today, I stripped it all away. No music or production. Why? Well I’ve been getting messages about fear lately and about the fact that we need to have no fear because God is always in control. And one fear I have is going live. Well, I did it today! Sound quality is not that great, and what about that crazy time lag in the beginning? Oh well, now I know! LOL. It will be OK.

Welcome friends! I began a three-part lesson on Jesus as a leader, beginning with the idea that like all leaders, Jesus knew how to speak to his followers, especially his inner circle, his apostles. Call it a “pep talk” if you will.
In part one, we talked about the Sermon on the Mount, aka The Beatitudes. In part two, we looked at two of his parables, the Prodigal Son, which is really more about the Heart of the Father than the Son, and the Sower and the Seed, which dealt with spreading the message.
Today, I want to end this series with Jesus during Passion Week on the Mount of Olives, with the 12 apostles. This was the last “pep talk” Jesus would give to the apostles. You might not think of this as a pep talk, knowing what was about to happen to Jesus. But like a good leader, he needed to prepare his team for what was to come.
Robyn Graham is a brand marketing strategist, podcast host, and photographer, and she helps women entrepreneurs get to the next level. In a special episode of Positively Joy, host Yvette Walker and regular guest Angel McCoy have a stirring conversation about motherhood, women who are childless, and their connection to the Bible story of Mary, the Mother of God, and Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist. Two women, one younger, one older, both giving birth to purpose.
Next week, we finish our series of "Jesus gave pep talks": part 3, his revelations on the Mount of Olives.
We end October, which is Infant Loss Month, with Elizabeth Meyers, who is a Christian author, blogger, and speaker. She is passionate about sharing truths in a way that people can understand. Her story and testimony is moving. Her son died several years ago, and she suffered from depression and anxiety, but found God’s strength in the midst of life’s struggles. She is offering a free book to our listeners. It’s called UNDEFEATED: From Trial to Triumph.
Last week, we started a three-week journey on Jesus as a leader and speaker with the Beatitudes, also known as the Sermon on the Mount. This week in part two, I want to discuss with you Jesus’ leadership through his parables.
Jesus’ parables describe the kingdom of God. Sometimes the parables are fairly straightforward, and sometimes more complicated to understand. Jesus leads as he educates. I'll explore two parables, one about the message of God, and one about the love of God.
And, Angel McCoy follows the message with a beautiful reading from Psalms.
This week Positively Joy is doing a Mic Swap, where I turn over the microphone to Jenna Erlandson of the Bridge of the Faithful podcast. Jenna has a great show and I wanted to share it with you. She discussed "Facing the Red Sea," and I know you'll get a lot out of it. Take it away, Jenna!
Jesus spoke like a leader. His words carried power, they inspired and motivated people. For the next three Mondays on Positively Joy, we begin looking at the speeches Jesus gave. Today, we look at the Sermon on the Mount. Like all great leaders, Jesus gave great speeches. Not just flowery speeches, but speeches that left his people with the passion and desire to do something. Then, Angel McCoy, of Angel Reads the Bible, reads from Romans on righteousness.
Cori Asuncion is host of the podcast "That's Not Proper," and does not consider herself a Christian. Yet, she believes in a Divine Creator, she reads the Bible and she believes that the Creator has a plan for you and me. Listen as Cori tells why she left the church, and what Christians and other believers can learn from each other. And just what is the blue room?
Today's show is jam-packed, and the title says it all. Today, Angel reads from Hebrews, then, I'm giving away two books from Mary Jo Pierce, and "Literary Midwife" Sharon Jenkins will teach you how to write a book in 90 days! Sit back, and enjoy an amplified edition of Positively Joy!
Constance Lawson, host of the "Weeds, Seeds and Beautiful Things" podcast, speaks openly and honestly about God, Infertility and "radical faith." She speaks the plain truth. But Constance always is hopeful. Her smile is genuine, and she has a heart for God.
Welcome to another episode of Angel Reads the Bible, and a mini-rant from your host, Yvette Walker, about social media thieves on Instagram. But even though I am a bit annoyed, and yes, even angry, scripture calms me.
At the end of the episode, I share a recipe with you for my Positively Joyful Nine Layer Fruit Cake.
Mix equal parts of:
love,
joy,
peace,
longsuffering,
kindness,
goodness,
faithfulness,
gentleness
and self-control
Mix well and let the spirit take control.
Bake in the warmth of the Lord.
Take out and consume like a fiery flame.
Now, read that over yourself and know the Lord loves you and always will keep you.

Mary Jo Pierce is a powerful Christian prayer intercessor who is following the Jewish tradition of Sabbath. Pierce calls her kitchen her second prayer room, because she observes the traditional Jewish Sabbath by baking Challah and worshipping on Friday nights. With others around her table, they eat and celebrate Jesus. The act is a form of worship and Biblical, she says, because the Lord is present in the form of the bread.
Show Notes:
Mary Jo Pierce: “My journey into the kitchen began out of a place of burnout, fatigue, tiredness, realizing I was doing things for Lord, but I wasn't doing them well. And discovering he has a better way. And his better way, is sabbath.”
Host, Yvette Walker: Hi, Yvette here. Listen, I'm just gonna take a few seconds to ask you for a big favor. That's it. Let's get on with the show.
Yvette: Hello, and welcome to Positively Joy, the podcast on searching for the light in all seasons. I'm your host, Yvette Walker. And today we have Mary Jo Pierce, who is a well, first of all, she's an amazing lady and someone that I have come to know. She is an intercessor, who loves to pray. And in fact, we prayed just before this podcast, which is something I told her... Well, I thanked her for that, and I told her that that's going to be a good way to begin the podcast from now on. So thanks for joining us, Mary Jo.
Mary Jo: Thanks for the invitation, Yvette.
Yvette: I'd like the audience to get to know you. You have a very unique interest that I would love to share. And that is baking, but baking, in His honor and in His glory. But before we get there, let's get to know you a little bit. So tell me a little bit about yourself.
Mary Jo: Okay, well, personally, I am a wife of 41-plus years, we have two grown grown daughters, and five growing grandchildren. So the Lord's really blessed me. And then in my walk with the Lord, I was raised in a liturgical home of home of faith. And yet at 29, in the Jesus movement of the 70s, so it's 1976, not 29. I was 29. But people started talking about Jesus. But I've been saved for 44 years, March 16, 1976.
Yvette: What an anniversary.
Mary Jo: It was wonderful. It was wonderful. And I'm in a middle of a 40-day fast right now. Getting ready for in the Jewish world’s New Year. So I keep a spiritual calendar versus a Gregorian. I don't know if that makes sense. I don't want to get ahead of myself. But anyway, the point is, I'm in a 40-day fast right now. And part of the fast is revisiting 44 years of journals. So the Lord can reset and remind me and reset some things in my life for this new season ahead.
Yvette: So you have been a journaler all this time.
Mary Jo: I have. I love recording, it's so important for us … this (the Bible) was so important that they recorded it. And we have this. I'm not, I'm not adding to this (the Bible).
Yvette: And the this you are referring to is the Bible.
Mary Jo: Yes. Oh, yeah. My hugging Bible. (She hugs it.) And so since out of the Word of God, God speaks to me personally. I believe it merits writing down. To walk with the Lord for 44 years. Always been interested in prayer. In fact, I write about in my baby book by my recorded my first prayer. So she knew how she recognized even at that young age of two, how important it was for me to connect with God. I would walk around the house going “Buzza Buzza Buzza” you know, just mimicking family prayer, but you know, connecting. So, prayer’s always been a thread in my life. From the time I got saved. I've always lived outside my comfort zone, doing things God's required or asked of me that I don't feel equipped or qualified to do. And for the last 16 years, that meant being on staff at a church in the local area, Gateway Church, brought on in 2004 to establish a culture of prayer and intercession in the church.
So during that time I like what God asked me to do. Because, you know, Scripture says teachers are called to a greater account. And so I have been called to a greater account. And that's really required me to dig deep and press in and lean on. And so it's been a wonderful time.
Yvette: You invite people into your home, not just for hospitality’s sake. But for teaching. I probably first heard about you through a program called DIVE, which I've mentioned on this podcast before, where during the dive retreat, you open your home to the people who are on the retreat, and do a very special thing with them. But before we talk about that, I just want to talk a little bit about that, that Christian hospitality, the fact that you open your home, and we see that in the Jewish faith.
Mary Jo: So in the, in the 90s, when churches started revisiting how we did church, that's when groups were birthed. Mm hmm. At least were where I was. And it was exploding. They were called cell groups in groups. But I've always wanted to add people, I always loved having people over in my house, it's a little of the home lacking me. And it's a little nesting. But you know, what, I always like to create a safe place, and a comfortable place, whether it's in a prayer group, whether it's in a teaching equip, whether it's today, you and I talking, we want to create an atmosphere where people feel comfortable and can lean in.
The best part of it is the God in you, you give it away. So with cell groups, and leading cell groups and teaching cell groups, so I moved to Colorado Springs full time in 2002. And we were in a new neighborhood, new home in a growing neighborhood. And so I went to the doors of every house, and I invited them over for tea or coffee. And everybody wanted to get to know someone. So they came over and out of it I started a Bible study group. Everywhere I live, I believe God has a purpose for putting me there. So my home in Colorado Springs, I asked him what he wanted to name it. So I called our home fig tree from the Scripture, invite your neighbors to come sit under a fig tree. It was a place where the Jewish people would almost siesta and sit and talk about the coming Messiah. That's what God said, that's what I want this home to be a place where people can come in and rest and talk about Jesus.
So I started this group, and I call them my figs. And their husbands call themselves the fig newtons. And we had a great time, going through Bible studies and being there for one another and doing community. This house that we're in now, the Lord gave me Psalm 16, five and six, the Lord will hold and maintain our lot. It was one of the few lots left in this neighborhood. Hmm. The Lord will hold and maintain my lot. Surely the boundary lines have fallen in pleasant places. So then, the name the Lord's given us for this home is pleasant place. And that's what we want to do. invite people into our home, create a pleasant place for people to share about the Lord. enjoy each other, make bread, laugh, hang out in my prayer room. fall asleep in my listening chair. We have a lot of fun here.
Yvette: I was gonna say I think you can see so many places in the Bible, particularly Mary and Martha. I think that people come to that when they when they think about Jesus going into homes and having meals with people and doing his teaching from those homes.
Mary Jo: Yes, yeah. And in small groups, even you know, I just, I treasured that about him. And I want to replicated as much as I can.
Yvette: Now, there may be some bread bakers who are listening, but there probably are no bread bakers who do what you do. So tell us a little bit about, about your bread, and what you do and how that got started.
Mary Jo: So in my home, I'm fortunate enough. I have a designated prayer room. And I write about it in extensively in “Adventures in Prayer.”
Yvette: Yes, you do. And I let me jump in. Let me jump in. You encouraged me through “Adventures in Prayer.” I don't have a prayer room but I have a prayer corner. You started off with a prayer chair and then a prayer corner and then a prayer room. So I don't have a room yet but I do have a prayer corner.
Mary Jo: And so what does that mean to you?
Yvette: Well, it happens to be in the bedroom. And I know that's not the best place for it. But the first thing I see when I wake up is, is that prayer corner. I have two little wall hangings, one says Blessed. And then there's another one who says actually something else I forget. But the word Blessed in rather large letters are right there. I see that first thing.
Mary Jo: See, that's wonderful. I mean, it's a place set apart to meet with God. So I also want to PostScript what I say about bread and tell you what I believe about prayer. Prayer is living with God. Sometimes it's words and sometimes it's not. You know, worship is singing, which obviously you probably do. I'm an unofficial member of our choir. I only open my mouth. I don't use sound. You know, worship is not commonly but you think of guitars and pianos and people who lead us yes – those Levites – worship in my life is more of how I offer things to him. How I worship. So I have my prayer room. And my journey into the kitchen, began out of a place of burnout, fatigue, tiredness, realizing I was doing things for Lord, but I wasn't doing them well. And discovering, he has a better way. And his better way, is Sabbath. So when I say that I take prayer out of the box, I live prayer, you live worship, to sometimes you're singing, but even you doing this podcast, you're that this is worship to you. You're making an offering to the Lord.
So in that time of trying to figure out rest and health, in balance of serving the Lord. And I came across a quote from a book, Joe Lieberman, an Orthodox Jew. He was a congressman in in his book, “The gift of Rest,” he says, He quoted on the first page, the Talmud, the Holy One, blessed be He says to Moses, Moses, and my storehouse is a goodly gift. And Sabbath is its name, huh? And the Lord said to be married to a few learn to Sabbath, you'll go another lap. Instead of under the bus. I got to be in the bus, you know? Yeah. Oh, I set out to learn Sabbath. I'm not Jewish. In fact, I had my DNA done. I was zero Jewish. I'm the most grafted-in Gentile you're ever going to meet. I am grafted in.
But being raised in a liturgical home. I've always loved the Jewish people, they live their faith out loud. Their feasts mean something. They live according to a calendar that Lord Jesus lived. And they Sabbathed. In fact, I've been to Israel, they really Sabbath. They have a Shabbat elevator that you can't even push a button on because that's work. Wow, it just goes to every floor. So the Lord wanted me to learn rest. Okay, so that's kind of like a mini detour. Let me get back to the bread. So part of the Sabbath experience is communion, or the elements, the bread and the wine (in my house is pomegranate juice). And so I thought, Well, you know what, I've never made bread. But I had an desire to learn how to make bread. So I graduated from a bread school.
Yvette: Really?
Mary Jo: YouTube University. I went on, and I'm just watching those YouTubes and I'm getting my flour out. And I'm getting I've never worked with yeast before. It just touches me so much. All the things God taught me about a few simple ingredients and settling down with him to worship on a Friday afternoon for a gathering that evening. And if the gathering is two, my husband and I… or it's a group … if it's pizza on paper plates… or I bring out my good China, It's a gathering. So I started learning how to make bread. So let me say that I've taken a lot of people with me in learning what I call my act of worship. And my kitchen has become my second prayer room. And I get in there, and I get those ingredients out. And there's something about doing it that has elevated my walk with the Lord, in such an intentional way. You know, we have to be intentional about God. Then just happen. You set your alarm to get up at five, very few people wake up on their own. People say I need prayer people go, I pray for you. But how many call and say, let me pray for you now? So it needs to be activated, and I believe in activating my faith.
Yvette: I love that you say activating one of my guests talks about activating your joy. And I love that.
Mary Jo: Absolutely. I think I listened to her. Absolutely. So many things lay dormant. And God's just going “Wake up, wake up, wake up.” He's got so much more for us. And so there I was in my kitchen. And listen, if I do a little, and I think it's good, that means I need to do a lot. This is what I tell people, I may not know much, but what I know I'm going to give to you. And so people gather in my home. And I've had close to 500 people now or more men, women, young, old families, groups, departments, DIVES, friends, mother daughters, and they get around the kitchen. And I am I have that many aprons. She has how many? (laughter) So everybody puts an apron on and I've got the recipe out and I make everybody feel the flour. And listen, I'm going to go over here for a second. And I hope I can pull it up easily. But there's a scripture in Deuteronomy 28 five, and it says, God's blessing on your basket in your bread bowl.
Yvette: Nice. nice.
Mary Jo: In fact, in another translation, it says a blessing on your grain basket. In kneading bowl. Hmm. When I read that I just cried. I mean, Don't you love it when scripture just I mean, you talk about joy. Yvette, is one of your greatest joys, opening up a scripture and hearing God speak to exactly what's on your heart?
Yvette: Absolutely. Absolutely.
Mary Jo: I can't get beyond that. That's sometimes I have to close it and go, Oh, that's too much. I can't do this. How would you do that? And so we started learning how to make bread. And now I absolutely love it. So I do what I call porch drops. And I have some white bags. And I have a label printed up that says begin with bread acts 242. Because when I gather people in my house, acts 242 says, continually devoted to teaching, studying by minute teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer. So I bring people into my house for what we use for about six hours.
Yvette: And that's a commitment of time.
Mary Jo: Oh, it is. But you know what, bread cannot be hurried. That's one of the blessings. Bread is the boss when we get together. literally takes my metronome and slows it down. He slows down my heartbeat. He slows down my mind. He slows down and I'm in this place of worship. I teach about Exodus 33. Seven to 18. Some of my favorite scriptures, but it's the Tent of Meeting. It's where Moses leaves the busyness of life. It's crazy out here. And he pitched a tent outside the camp. And they met with God face to face and the Lord called him friend. And it was out of that place. Moses said If you're rest doesn't go with me. And that's how I feel. When I get in my kitchen, which I call my second prayer room. I feel as if I've left the busyness of life. And I've gotten into my Tent of Meeting. And I'm meeting with God, and I'm having fun and praying through it. But I'm meeting with God for His glory. And his rest goes with me. It's amazing. I highly recommend it. So now I'm learning three braid four braid, six braid, and I put like, fig in it. And I put I'm having a lot of fun.
Yvette: Now, now the bread. So first of all, you quoted that scripture that I think some people can't connect with. Because we don't make bread anymore. We go to the grocery store, and we buy bread, right? And so we don't really think about grain or flour, a blessing be on your grain or blessing be on your flour. We don't really think about that, because we don't really know how to do it. We haven't done it. I made bread before… I used a bread machine!
Mary Jo: I threw mine out. I mean, I gave mine away when I discovered how. And listen you guys, gals? It's easy! Bread is so forgiving, huh? It's so easy.
Yvette: Let's talk about the kind of bread so it's not just any bread. It's and I'm gonna, I may mispronounce it. But is it? Is that Challah bread? Or do you…
Mary Jo: It’s Ch-allelujah bread! (laughter)
Yvette: And it's the bread with the braids, you just talked about three braids four braids sixth braids. So not only are you and it’s interesting that you say that bread is forgiving, because yeast scares me.
Mary Jo: I can help you with that.
Yvette: I think I'm gonna do something wrong. But not only are you having to figure out making sure that you've got the right proportions and things, then you have to know how to braid and make it look good. But when you're doing that, though, you're not just –and you tell me if I'm wrong – but you're not just doing it just to make the bread or for you to get the glory. You're doing it for hHm. And I'd imagine if I were to do it, and I really want to try, and maybe we can get back on a zoom call and I could do it with you. Would that be fun?
Mary Jo: I think we can arrange that. You're so much fun to hang out with. Let's do it. Let me tell you, though, this bread is not my idea. This bread is a traditional Challah bread. That's traditional for the Jewish Shabbat on their table every Friday night, our two loaves of Challah. And this bread represents the double portion. God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness the night before Shabbat … Sabbath, so they wouldn't have to work on Sabbath. But these two loaves represent God's provision, God's promise, God's rest. Don't worry about tomorrow. I got tomorrow covered. Come to me all you are weary and heavy laden, I will give you rest. Are you tired? Are you burned out on religion? Let me give you the unforced rhythms of grace. And I found that in the kitchen.
Yvette: Wow.
Mary Jo: So I come up with these ingredients. And I'm thinking I am in my way, as a Gentile grafting in to Jewish women and men all over the world who are making bread, who are getting ready to present an offering. And listen, you want to get happy? You want some joy? You get a concordance or go to Bible gateway.com. And you put in the word bread. You put in the word presence, because bread is his presence. Exodus 25:30 p in the tabernacle, on the table, always presenting the show bread always a continual offering before the Lord.
So I told you I'm going to a 40-day fast right now. And so part of its to take communion every night. Hmm. And so or at some point during the day, so here's my Challah I made it yesterday. And I take communion from it. So this is the traditional three braid holla Isn't it pretty?
Yvette: So let me just describe it. So it's, it's beautifully proportioned. The braids are not all lopsided. It's lovely. It's got a beautiful Is that an egg wash sheen?
Mary Jo: It is.
Yvette: It's a beautiful sheen. I can't smell it, but I know it smells good. And I must tell you that you're going on a 40-day fast and you are holding a loaf of bread and smelling it. You've got some. Yeah, you've got some real power there, lady.
Mary Jo: I've got some real purpose. And if you've got purpose behind a fast, the willpower comes because the desire trumps the willpower. So when I made my yeast, just let my prayers rise like incense, you know, remember that song that your prayers like rise like incense before the throne? Yes, that's what I'm doing. And so yeast is special, and of course, the bread and the flour. And then I don't put sugar in my recipe. I substituted and I put honey in it. Because that's Biblical. And that's what makes it MY honey Challah. And then I go, I don't want sugar, I put in Honey, I don't want oil, I'll put in butter. So I actually made it my recipe. And you know, we create safe places just like you're doing on your podcast, you're creating a safe place for people.
So they come in, and I just watch God move. Everyone's different, because I'm watching what the Holy Spirit is saying and showing me. So I'll make some adjustments based on what I’m hearing and seeing. And they were very leaning in. And one man said pastor Mary Jo, where where do we where do I begin? Where do I begin? And I said, do this, on Friday morning, get up, go out, buy your wife, a pair of candlesticks. Buy your wife, a takeout meal and go buy some Challah and go home and say to her Honey, I don't know what it's gonna look like. But I know that God wants us to have his rhythm and rest in our home. And I want to come alongside you. Let's figure this out together. And that's just what I'm suggesting. There's, listen, we're very fortunate to be Gentiles grafted in. There's very… you know, there's not rules. But there's some absolutes. So here's my four absolutes for my Shabbat dinner. May I?
Yvette: Yes, please.
Mary Jo: So remember how I said I like to live prayer out loud. And I like to surround myself with what God's saying and doing? I decided I wanted a bigger table to fit comfortably. And I couldn't find what I wanted. I had a picture of what I wanted. So I went to Pinterest and I found this table. And when I saw it, I knew immediately. There was this huge chandelier sitting over a barn wood table.. And I knew I wanted the glory of God over a man-made simple gathering table. So a friend of mine who has never made a table yet, so or me until I asked. He made me what I call my Shabbat table. And it's oak, cedar and Sycamore three biblical woods. There's no nails in it. There's 24 dowels, 12 apostles 12 tribes.
Yvette: Wow.
Mary Jo: Everything in it is like amazing. The leg of the table is a sycamore trunk and it's quartered. And all he did was sand them. So it's very fluid. And on each leg, I have a Hebrew letter branded, that says Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh. So when we're seated together, we're in heavenly places. And then I have the largest gaudiest that I could afford, that my ceiling could handle, Glory chandelier above it. And then on the four corners of the table are the four components of what I believe can make any Sabbath meal, whether it's pancakes on a Saturday morning, whether it's Friday nights. On the one table in the corner, it says worship in Hebrew. Hmm. I put that music on and the presence of God. He's just, you know what? We're honoring him. And we're honoring the commandment. And we're honoring family, and we're obeying and what does he do when we do that? He shows up. Here I do my worship. And then over here I light my candles. And then I do the communion, the pomegranate in my house and the Challah, we take bread. And then the third component is bless.
So I have learned more from watching Jewish fathers and grandfathers and uncles bless their children and their children's children and their wife. So we were in Israel one time on one of my prayer tours, and we were sitting at our table on a Friday night behind us were this long family, there must have been 50 or 60 of them. And before the meal came, they just went around the grandmothers hugging the children's faces, the uncles hugging each other speaking blessings. Isn't that powerful?
Yvette: Yes.
Mary Jo: Think of the whole think of the atmosphere in homes and in marriages. At every Friday night. The husband publicly declares a blessing on his wife and his children.
Yvette: Wow. It has nothing to do with what we end up eating. So is that what you call it? Begin with bread?
Mary Jo: I did.
Yvette: Wow. Wow. Because it's not really the bread. I mean, it is the act of making the bread and worshiping but it's you begin with the bread.
Mary Jo: Nothing to do with this. Yeah. This is the joy part of it. In fact, the fourth component in Hebrew on the fourth corner, it's enjoy, because God really wants us to enjoy each other. So I asked the Lord one time, can I get to do what I do? I feel so honored. To teach people prayer to pray with people. Just Why? Any you know what he said? Because you get me. You know, you enjoy me. Yeah. And I want people to enjoy me. I don't take God lightly. Hmm. I do enjoy the wonder of being able to be this little speck on Earth. One of those pieces, one of those grains of sand. I'm called daughter.
Yvette: So what would you repeat your four? Yeah, four points.
Mary Jo: The first pillar worship, pray, bless, and enjoy.
Yvette: Yeah, yeah. I love that. I love that. I'm sure there are many times. But can you describe a time when you were overwhelmed by the love of God?
Mary Jo: So this is I have not even posted or blogged about this yet. But I will. During this 40-day fast, and fasting is always a time to look in and let God. So I was this was three days ago. And I said to the Lord, Lord, what about my sins? And he said what sins? I still can't think about it without crying. I told my husband last night for the first time and I was crying. So let me elaborate on that. I was so overwhelmed with the fact that he does not remember my failures. My, my sins, my disobedience, is my shrinking backs, by my sin. Isn't that beautiful?
Yvette: That's beautiful. You know that he's God. He could remember everything if he wanted to.
Mary Jo: He could. But you know, here I am. I'll be 74 next month. Having walked with the Lord 44 and a half years. And I understand as far as the east is from the west, he doesn't remember, you know, you forgive. I understand it. But that moment, it really drew a line in my heart. When I heard him say what sin. So that's the last time and that was a couple days ago.
Yvette: I hope that that would happen to everyone listening to this, that they would have a moment like that.
Mary Jo: In fact, can we do something? Lord, I just lift up every listener right now. Lord is they're seeking you with their heart, their soul, their mind. And the accuser who stands before the throne accusing day and night. We silence that accuser. Because the Word of God declares that he does not remember as far as the East is from the West. And when he sees us, he sees the righteousness. The robe of Christ. I pray the grace of God for every single listener, that they'll be able to apprehend, grab hold of what's sin and not judge themselves? Because the Lord is surely not sitting in judgment. Amen.
Yvette: Amen.
Mary Jo: Yvette, can I just say, that does not mean, the Lord's ignoring sin? That means that that there was a series of repentance and processing. And sometimes there's an aftermath to sin. There's, those are called consequences.
Yvette: That's right.
Mary Jo: And so you're walking that out, though. But you're walking it out with the grace of God and the love of God knowing, hey, come here, daughter, come here son. We're going to work this out together. So, amen.
Yvette: Oh, my goodness, I tell you what, there's nothing we can do. Now that's going to top that. So I'd almost say let's end on that. But I want people to know where they can find you.
Mary Jo: I'm asked more times than anything. Can I be mentored? That was a very frustrating thing for someone who likes to say yes, and give away what God's given. So I wrote a mentoring discipling prayer book, that whether you're new to prayer, or whether you walked with them for 44 years, this book is a great resource, a great measuring rod. And it's called “Adventures in Prayer.” Very simple, short, 40-day stories, and at the end of every story is my message to you where I exhort the reader, God's message to you scriptures, and then your message to God.
And then this one was fun. I thought this one was going to be first. But this one's called “Follow Me – An unending conversation with Jesus.” And I'm just going to show you real brief. It's written in color. This is my actual journal from 2012. Wow, where I said to Jesus, listen, it was November 30. I thought, I said, I don't have anything planned for December. Is there anything that you want to do? I was in my listening chair. It really wasn't the Jesus it was the Godfather, Son, and Holy Spirit. And I had this idea to walk through the gospel of john, having a conversation with Jesus using the relative words. So I have got some resources there. I've got a website, maryjopierce.com. And if you go to my YouTube, I think you can find it by “Begin with Bread” or Mary Jo Pierce. But I there's a full demonstration. It takes 50 minutes, but you can I've segmented it down. So if you just want to learn grading, you can look at the grading part.
So, thank you for coming and stopping by I had a ball!
Yvette: And we had a ball too. So now I guess it's time for me to dust off my apron, conquer my fear of yeast, and begin baking Challah bread just like Mary Jo does in God's honor and glory. Thanks so much. I hope you enjoyed this episode. Please go to positivelyjoy.com for a free teachable on five steps to choosing joy and to listen to previous episodes. As I got settled in my seat in church on Sunday, I looked around and more than 1/3 of people were not wearing masks. Now lest you think this is going to be a rant against people who don't wear masks it is not. In episode 31, I want to explore when a community that previously seemed pretty cohesive starts to seem separate.
The voice of God. Audibly hearing his voice. Isn’t that what we seek when we pray?
We ask for something and we think, “wouldn’t it be nice if God just said, ‘Sure, I can get that for you,’ or ‘I’m make it happen right away.”
But he doesn’t. That’s not how God works, and if I’m honest, sometimes that frustrates me. How about you?
But wait. I didn’t say God didn’t have a voice. He does. The Bible says he does, and people all over the earth have heard his calling. But it’s not the kind of voice we expect from the King of Glory.
It’s not a powerful voice or thunder. The Bible calls it a whisper, or a “still small voice.” Listen to episode 30 for more.

This is one of my favorite episodes of 2020. It didn't make the top 20 in downloads and I'd say it's underrated. I hope you enjoy listening to my conversation with Methodist Elder and historian Wendy Meyer unpacking Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical "Hamilton" and looking at the many references to God and the Bible. We look at four songs in particular: "Wait For It," "Say No to This," "One Last Time" and "Hurricane."
