It has been said, you never really know the true impact you have on others around you. While this is true for all of us, it was definitely the case for this week’s guest, Dana Miller. While the Music were recording their 2nd album, they were unaware there was an avid fan, complete with glitter and wings, searching the streets of Atlanta in hopes of a chance encounter. This week on the Music and More Podcast, Dana explains how her discovery of The Music as an unknown opening act was pure happenstance, but helped shape the person she would eventually become. Dana, now a freelance writer, is a wicked wordsmith, giggling provocateuse, and mega-melomaniac who still has her glitter, wings and appreciation for her boys from Leeds.
There’s an old cliche that you have a lifetime to make your first album and only a few months to make your second. This was certainly the case for The Music. After the success of the debut album, the lads found themselves on a 3 year world tour, shuttling from airport to hotel, recording radio-station idents across the American midwest and explaining to interviewers from Boston to Bangkok exactly how they came up with the band name. As exhausting as that sounds, imagine finally getting to take a break and then being told you have to leave home and go to America to record your second album. In this episode of Music and More, Adam shares his experiences recording the 2nd album Welcome to the North in the heart of the south, and the reality of Difficult Second Album Syndrome.

Richard McNamara is a musician, singer-songwriter, and producer, best known as the guitarist and co-lead vocalist for the band Embrace. Fans of The Music know the name Jim Abbiss very well. He is responsible for producing the epic debut album. Twenty years ago four young lads from Kippax released their debut album, The Music. Just going through the track list it’s difficult to label what exactly this band was about. They’ve been described as Indie Rock, infused with drum and bass, Led Zeppelin, Stone Roses, and touch of Rage Against the Machine for good measure. No matter who you think they sound like, the songs on this debut album are timeless and still played in heavy rotation 20 years later. In 2000, the band Insense took 1st place in a Leeds City Council competition called Bright Young Things. That night they not only won the competition, but they caught the eye of their soon to be manager, Tim Vigon. This week on the Music and More Podcast Adam and Pete welcome The Music’s manager and biggest fan to take us back to the early days of Bright Young Things, signing the band, touring, Temple Newsam and much more.
A B-side was originally known as the song on the flip side of a 12" or 7" vinyl single. Depending on who you ask, B-side can be additional songs that were determined not to fit with the overall sound of an album, or some might classify B-sides as second class citizens; subpar compared to the songs on the A-side. On this episode, Adam and Pete discuss B-sides and how they fit into a bands catalogue of work.
