Welcome to When It Goes Wrong, the podcast about disasters, accidents and when things fall apart. On this episode we will be heading back to Mount Everest and covering some of the first attempts at climbing it. We will cover Mallory's attempts in 1921, 1922 and the fateful trip in 1924 and then subsequent attempts before it was successfully climbed in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

On the 20th of April 2010, the offshore oil rig Deepwater Horizon hit a series of issues which resulted in the rig exploding, killing 11 on board. It also resulted in the largest oil leak and spill in history which would take almost 5 months to contain and resulted in huge numbers of wildlife dying.

On this episode I discuss The Donner Party - the group set off to hike the Oregon Trail in 1846 - this is always a hard journey, but in this case they were struck by bad luck, wrong directions, accidental deaths and eventually being stuck in the frozen mountains for 3 months awaiting rescue. This would result in the deaths of almost half the party and the choice of whether to eat the dead.
