Welcome to the Work-Life Flow podcast with a short and sweet special episode for International Women’s Day and their motto #BreakTheBias.Book a Strategy call **As you know, this podcast has morphed and I like to say that it is part of my journey of finding who I can best serve. At the onset of the pandemic, I felt the urge to help parents create a family team and look at education through the lens of life. While my desire to serve and help was strong, I think moms were struggling so much to just get through the day, that my program felt like “another” thing to do on top of it all.

Just last week I had a client tell me that she felt like failing in life. She should be able to work, care for a high needs child and run the household. She said in tears “I see other moms do it and it makes me feel like a failure. I used to be very driven, but my child needs me so much and I don’t have extended family to help. I am burnt out.”

Lots of bias around the roles at home to be unearthed and cleared out.

While I still love to talk about family culture and believe that it is important to work-life integration, I had to ask myself where can I make the biggest impact? Who would benefit most from my coaching?

Through the pandemic nearly 2 million women have left, or shall I say had to leave, the workforce. With all the support networks suddenly shutting down, many of us had to choose between a job or taking care of our children or elderly parents. This has set us women back decades of efforts in #Diversity and #Inclusion.

Research published DeloitteGlobal’s report, Women @ Work: A Global Outlook identifies a number of actions that employers can take to make meaningful progress when it comes to gender equality. These include embedding a truly inclusive culture, enabling a better work-life balance by going beyond policies, demonstrating a visible and measurable leadership commitment and providing meaningful development opportunities.**

**“Meaningful and sustained change will only come when women experience ‘everyday’ inclusive workplaces—whether virtual or in-person—where statements on the importance of gender equality are backed up by meaningful actions, and where goals are set and progress is measured,” Emma Codd, Deloitte Global Inclusion Leader says.

For me it’s all coming full-circle now with the partnerships with Leader’s Lounge and Villyge. I also earned an executive coach certificate through the Center of Executive Coaching and am now working with high-achieving Women in STEM careers to reach their leadership goals while balancing career & family, so that they can bring their best selves to all areas of life, guilt-free.**

**Together we can change the work culture one leader at a time!

Now that women are slowly joining the workforce again, they are asking for more support, more flexibility, more dialogue and are rejecting the daily bias they face. Let’s all pay attention to what they need and offer proper support.

With this, let’s raise awareness to #BreakTheBias on International Women’s day!**

And just like that we’re in 2022, wait we’re already halfway through the first month of the New Year! How did that happen?!?

…anyways, today I wanted to share a few updates about my work and the Work-Life flow podcast.

My hard work of showing up consistently and bringing real-life stories and experiences to you has gained me some incredible opportunities for collaborations. The first collaboration that I formed was with Kease International and I became a partner coach for their Leader’s Lounge membership. This means I have been preparing masterclasses for their members and offering coaching through their platform.

Then, towards the end of the year, I had been approached by Debi Yadegari (whom I had interviewed in WLF episode 14 about working parent’s diversity and inclusion needs) to become an Expert Coach for Villyge, an Employee Benefits Program.

I am really excited for both of these opportunities to make an impact on working parents’ lives. And if you think your company could benefit from either the Leader’s Lounge or Villyge’s program, please share about these women-led companies with your HR or DEI department. You can find links to them on my website.

I find this all very exciting and if you’ve been listening for a while, you know that one of my values is to be a lifelong learner, and as such, I decided to deepen my understanding of coaching and am currently enrolled to obtain my Executive Coach Certification. I’m in deep learning mode which may slow down my podcast output a little.

You might have heard or read about “the great resignation”. More employees are leaving companies than ever before in search of a better fit. Employees ask for more than just a good salary, they want to be part of something bigger, feel included, and do meaningful work. Right now companies are very eager to learn how to attract and keep top talent, they are open to negotiations never imagined possible before. For companies, it is high time to invest in more Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Training, but also to offer a wide range of support through employee benefit programs such as Villyge, or the Leader’s Lounge. I find this to be truly exciting and it is what I had been writing and talking about since the onset of the pandemic. This is good stuff! Positive change is happening. Now I am grateful to be able to shape a new corporate culture through my work and my collaborations.

What does this mean for the Work-Life Flow Podcast?

With me partnering more in the corporate space, this podcast will likely move away from homeschooling (although it is a topic I love) and offer more interviews with corporate leaders, and working moms rather than business owners. The tricky part about that is that it is way easier to get a guest who runs a business than a person who does not really benefit from appearing on a podcast….so bare with me as I create a guest list.

This means that the work-life flow podcast might be a little more eclectic for a while, as I want to understand the driving forces for working parents’ success, pitfalls, and well-being in the workplace and at home.

The first few interviews that I have planned are with women and men who had a break in their career due to starting a family.

With all this being said, let me know who you would like me to interview and what topics you would like to hear about. You can do this by joining my Work-Life Flow FB group, sending me a message on LinkedIn or on Instagram. I am always looking for a great guest or topic suggestions.

In today's episode, I explore the topic of mental load in motherhood (also called motherload). I share my evolution on this topic and my thoughts about why we need to stop propagating the celebration of mental load in motherhood. I believe that we have it in us to change the dynamic and let go of being the"perfect mom" who does it all. If we can't do it for ourselves, let's at least do it for our children, so they can grow up in a more equitable society.

Main takeaways:

  • Why do we need to view mental load posts critically
  • That we have the power to change the dynamic
  • How to share the load
  • Why are we proud of having to bear an enormous mental load?
  • How to change the narrative on social media

You flipped your lid. Now what?

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt so triggered that you said (or yelled) something you truly wished you hadn’t said? Right. It happens. You flipped your lid. Now you fall into the negative spiral thinking you damaged your kids, or how you’re not cut out to be a mom, or how you should have been able to control yourself better,...Now you’re feeling shameful.

I want you to know that you are not a bad mom because you sometimes yell at your kids, so let’s get that off the table. We flip your lids. It happens at times. And it tends to happen more often when we are spread thin when we do not have time to decompress and rest as much as we need. See how we’re coming full circle here?

In this episode, I am exploring the connection between our emotions and our mental well-being. As I had been preparing a talk for an online summit about mental well-being I had to make my case for why I think Emotional Intelligence is the basis for mental well-being. The more aware we can become of our emotions in certain situations, the better we will learn to mitigate difficult situations and learn to respond rather than have a knee-jerk reaction. The better we know ourselves, the better we can find ways to increase our well-being.

In today's episode I share a story from our family life, where I could de-escalate a situation, that earlier on would have led me to become all "mother-bear", through tapping into empathy.

As a Life- and Leadership coach I focus on how emotional intelligence can help us change corporate culture to be more human, but also how to create family cultures where each individual can thrive. This story was a great lesson for myself about the power of empathy, self-awareness and awareness of others.

Have you encountered a situation you could "save" by tapping into your emotional intelligence? I'd love to hear about then over on Instagram @kerstin_kirchsteiger

In today’s episode in honor of International Women’s Day 2021, and my guest Dr. Christine Spadafor, take a look at what her Leadership journey has looked like. She has often been the only woman in the room and had to learn how to present herself so her ideas would be heard. As she shares, it took a conscious effort for her to work on her language, posture, and position in meetings over the years. Christine shares that she's torn about quota for board members who fill such a position might be regarded as a token and not a valued member of the board and what community expectations could do instead.

We had to address the horrible effect the pandemic has had on women's careers with more than 2 million women leaving the workforce due to the pandemic's impact on the child and elderly care systems.

Today I wanted to share part of my journey to becoming who I am today. Here, I want to focus on some key moments that helped me find my voice and I hope they’ll inspire you to embrace your transformation.

I learned that through losing myself in motherhood, I created the space to truly find myself. And I wish the same for you: Embrace the change. Take time to truly heal. Approach the new YOU with curiosity. And when you BECOME YOUR true self, celebrate every minute of it.

I learned in prenatal yoga that every one of us has a story and we can learn from each other. So, please share your story, you never know who needed to hear it. If you feel like sharing your story, you can tag me on Instagram @kerstin_kirchsteiger or DM or email me. I am here to humbly listen.4 Must-Have Checklists for Your Kids so You Can Sit Back and Relax (While They get Ready on Their Own)

  • The power of reconnecting to our intuition.

Today’s episode is a call to all companies to create an inclusive work environment so working parents can be professionally accomplished rather than feel overlooked and undervalued. Debi shares her story about her return to work after her first child was born. The pushback and discrimination she faced made her become an active agent in working parents right through the creation of Villyge.

The biggest takeaway from this is that lifting up 50% of your workforce will have an incredibly positive effect on your company. It will create a company culture where everyone feels welcome to follow their dreams, may it be marathon running, fulfilling their dream, being a parent and happy employees will always be willing to go the extra mile. Debi shares that employers should approach working parent’s adjustments as an investment into the company rather than mere compliance in D&I.

What we’re talking about...

  • How to support working parents better, so they can bring their full potential to work.

  • The importance of setting up standards and objective criteria for evaluating the performance of working parents
  • Setting up a system creates a culture of support for all employees
  • In any company, we work in teams, and the teams are only as strong as the weakest link. By taking care of 50% of your workforce you’ll automatically create an environment of support for all your employees.
  • How to role model proper work-life boundaries to your kids
  • If you’re not client-facing, you may choose your work hours.
  • I set goals and make sure these goals are accomplished.

In this last episode before the new year, I wanted to share my view on Emotional Intelligence and Leadership training for individuals who are not necessarily considered leaders in their job. They may or may not yet have climbed the ranks.

Looking back at this year, a lot of us have had the opportunity to turn inside and redefine our values. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2021 and to crushing your personal and professional goal in the new year!Insta @kerstin_kirchsteiger4 Must-Have Checklists for Your Kids so You Can Sit Back and Relax (While They get Ready on Their Own)A few days back I did some research on whether it would be appealing to working moms to be considered the leader of their home.

And the backlash was unexpected and enormous. Comments were: “I am already the leader at work. I want my home to feel nurturing”, “I am done leading after a full day of work”, “My partner and I work together, no-one leads”.

This made me think. What does being a leader mean to them? Why do they have such a negative connotation with leadership? So I started to google the term “leader”
And then I turned inside. Why do we have such a negative connotation with leadership? Is it because most of us have grown up in a system where the teachers, the authorities, the parents held a power position over us most of our lives?

Is it because schools have taught us to obey and follow rules, rather than foster independent thinking and valuing collaboration, where knowledge was more important than curiosity or exploration, where taking risks was punished?

Do these experiences of powerlessness get triggered when I say “become the leader of your home”? Maybe that mom couldn’t fathom that they wish to be “nurturing in your home” is absolutely possible while being a leader. Maybe it is a lack of good leadership we experienced in our lives.

The question remains, how do we shift what leadership means to us?
A thought that crossed my mind was that we have to move from “power over” to “power with”.

One of my core beliefs in my business manifesto is: “Being a mom is the most difficult, yet rewarding leadership position you’ll ever have.”

What does leadership mean to me? This is the definition I came up with:

Leader: A person who recognizes the potential of others and inspires them to reach it by recognizing people’s strengths and helping them develop skills. Always looking to grow in their own development. Questioning the status quo, breaking out of the mold, creative thinker and self-directed learner. Making confident decisions and taking responsibility for all of the results they create in their life.

What if I told you that this is my definition of an emotionally intelligent leader? Does it make more sense now when I say we should be leaders in our own homes? Is the shift from “power over” to “power with” clear enough?

A shift from authoritarian parenting where obedience is key and punishment is a go-to to authoritative parenting, where relationships are valued and the rules are firm, kind, and clear.

It also doesn’t exclude co-parenting or co-leading with your partner. On the contrary, it would be a model where the parents and children work together as a team. Where the parents would lead the team in a way that everyone gets a voice at the table (in an age-appropriate way).

For the holiday season, I wanted to bring some calm and joy. This is why today’s episode is all about how to integrate small acts of self-care into your life.

We chat about how Bridget has navigated the challenges of the pandemic; the shift in work-life flow it brought for her family as well as the inception of her new program “Self-Care Small Bites”. We chat about our refusal to propagate martyrdom as a badge of honor for moms if we want our kids to grow up in a more equal society. Listen until the end and enjoy a guided “self-care small bite”.

We also discuss how we make it a point to show our kids that we moms have passions. That we are people who need to take care of ourselves before caring for others. Bridget shares about using yoga techniques in her classroom creating a much kinder atmosphere. She also shares about her supportive husband helping her navigate work-life balance while she is busy doing a range of projects.

4 Must-Have Checklists for Your Kids so You Can Sit Back and Relax (While They get Ready on Their Own)

What we’re talking about...

  • The immediate positive transformations she saw in her students when she introduced yoga in her classroom.
  • How her supportive partner helps her navigate work-life integration while doing different projects.
  • That homeschooling brings a lot of flexibility but certainly looked very different during the pandemic lockdown.
  • The challenges of homeschooling during this pandemic when kids are at home and both parents work from home.

Today’s episode is all about my approach to finding a work-life integration that’s right for you and your family. I think in terms of these 3 Pillars: the first pillar is YOU, the second YOUR FAMILY, and the third YOUR WORK. When trying to reach work-life integration these play into each other, as they are the biggest moving parts. Depending on the season one might have a higher priority than the other.

Most approaches to work-life balance talk about setting priorities and time management. And while these are definitely skills that help you become more efficient, I believe that the key to unlocking work-life integration is to leverage your leadership and communication skills. By showing up as a leader, with a clear vision and values you can inspire the people around you to achieve their highest potential. My preferred leadership style is using your emotional intelligence to create better relationships because empathy and compassion will create belonging and result in better communication.

10 Easy, Screen-Free Hacks To Keep Kids Entertained

(1) YOU - You create a Vision for yourself and your life. In this step, it’s important to turn inside and think about what is important to you, your values so to speak. What are your professional goals? What do you envision as family time? What qualities do you want your children to exhibit as adults? Where do you see your relationship with your partner in 3, 5,10 years? My approach is to look at your real-life circumstances (your work, be it part-time, full-time, or self-employed, your income, your expenses), then integrate your values and take your vision to start building out a process to get you moving towards your vision.
(2) Your family - I want you to think about them as your team and leverage their strengths. Chores can be seen as teamwork and free up some of your time to spend with your children. So they can see the direct effect their help has on my ability to be with them.

(3) Your Work - What is your professional goal? Income goal? Do you need to be working full-time? Would flexible hours be an option? Remote working?

What we’re talking about...

  • Why I believe that work-life balance is more about thriving relationships (yourself, your family, and work) and less about time-management.
  • What questions to ask yourself when defining your values and achieving work-life integration in the process.
  • That as a mom is the most difficult leadership position you'll ever have.
  • Why increasing your Emotional Intelligence will benefit you not only at work but also in life.
  • That once you get clear on your values there is generally enough money for the things that you need and value.
  • How Emotional Intelligence training is beneficial in finding the strength to ask for support.
  • The importance of investing in Emotional Intelligence training for companies that want to emerge strongly from this crisis.

No, the kids grow and change, our needs as adults change, and with it come new challenges. But I know, with the tools that I have learned we'll figure this out as a family. And I want the same for you. I want to take you on this journey to finding yourself and making your family's vision a reality.
